Welp. Â That was awesome.
We ordered out on a Saturday night. Â It's just far enough off the main drag on Devon that you can get in and out without getting stuck in the awful dinner rush traffic there. Â The place actually looks like an okay option to eat-in, too. Â
The food is just great.  It's high quality, as others note, and flavorful, well-prepared, satisfying.  We got the Kabuli special lamb, one of the dumpling dishes, some potato bread, and a lamb sandwich.  I really can't find a flaw in anything, especially  given that the price was barely $30 and we got three meals out of it between two of us.  I especially loved the braised lamb and also the dumplings, which were very rich (be warned!) but just outstanding when cut with some bread.
Genuinely happy to have found this place!
Found Kabul House Express through Grubhub and everytime we order, I am surprised at how great the quality of food is here! Everything is homemade with fresh ingredients, adding lots of flavor without feeling heavy or unhealthy. We always order one of the bolani breads (like naan stuffed with different ingredients) with a recent favorite being the baby pumpkin - though they all are very good! All the sandwiches are delicious, a great value and come with their delicious sauces - either yogurt, cilantro chutney or garlic chili. However, my absolute favorite dish there is the mantu - similar to pierogi but stuffed with ground beef and onions and topped with a tomato sauce and the yogurt sauce - a must try!!!!
Review Source:Technically, it isn't West Rogers Park, but whatever. Â Kabul Express is incredible. Â I had a chicken sandwich (wrap?). Â it was $5, and it taste delicious. Â The flatbread was homemade fresh, right there in front of me! Â The chicken was tender, moist and flavorful. Â I highly recommend this place.
Review Source:Wow! Amazing food!!! We started off with the Bulanee. It is equivalent to an aloo paratha. It was so fresh and tasty and the yogurt was an excellent compliment to the appetizer. We were so please with the Bulanee that we couldn't wait for our entrees. We order koubideh: chicken, beef and lamb which were seasoned to perfection and wonderful taste. My new favorite restaurant!
Review Source:Actually it was some pretty good food, but you got to watch this place.... had an Chicken Kabob Sandwich and half way through found that the chicken was not fully cooked; like raw on the inside. We had to take it out and microwave it. Maybe it was a one time thing, who knows.... but you just cant do that.
Review Source:I cannot speak to the authenticity of Afghan food. Â But I can say that this is perhaps the tastiest middle eastern style food that I've had in a very long time. Â Seriously delicious. Â I ordered the Bolani Gandana which is a lot like Naan only it is stuffed with ingrediants. Â In this case it was leeks and garlic. Â I also ordered the Mantoo which are these ground beef dumplings. Â I really enjoyed it. Â I ordered delivery and it showed up well before the estimated time. Â I will definitely be ordering from here again.
Review Source:Too bad we hadn't gotten here until 2-1/2 months after their opening. We've been to KH back when they were also making pizza back in Evanston. Went a few times in Skokie, but our visits dropped off after that. Shamefully, our last visit seems like 10 years ago.
Being closer to home and more casual are both pluses for us. We went with the lamb pulao, mantu, the aush-rishta soup, and the leek/scallion bolani. The lamb was tasty and tender, mostly shank, and without gristle. Was our first time having bolani, and we were surprised to find a long flatbread that evoked Chinese scallion pancakes. The soup was rich mix of greens (spinach?), different beans, chickpeas - cooked tender but not turned to mush. The mantu were great and ever as memorable from our previous KH visits.
The staff offered us hot tea gratis and we got a green and one black tea. The green tea was traditional but good, while the black was spiced a little, maybe with cardamom. Â Cups are large, enough to carry you through a meal.
Place is nice casual - no highchairs or boosters - so with toddlers, be prepared. Our daughter was transfixed by the food, so we got by ok!
It was my 1st time trying Afghan food and I have to say, I really enjoyed it. We tried the the Kabuli Pulau, Afghan Chicken Kabob with Afghan Rice, Tandoori bread, Â and the Bolani Kadu. They were all very yummy especially the Kabuli Pulau. The owners are very welcoming and helpful. It's great that they've opened up a location in the city because it's convenient and I definitely want to try their main restaurant in Skokie next time.
Review Source:Very delicious. I don't often go for Afghan food because I mostly consider it a bland version of Indian food. However, Kabul house does a great job of bringing out the flavors of Afghan food to bring it together in a very unique way.
They were very friendly and I am certainly coming back to try other items on the menu.
Prices were alright, but a little on the steep side for this type of fair, IMO. But well worth it.
the best Afghan food i've had in Chicago. the lamb in the kabuli pulao was extremely tender and flavorful, comparable to what i've had in Kabul. the bolanis were also excellent.
Kabul House Express (and the original Kabul House in Skokie) is family owned and they are extremely friendly. this is a must-go even if you know very little about Afghan cuisine.
