I love doing a local search on Yelp and coming up with a good local place. Â It's no five star, but it's better than winding up at a McDonald's or Panera. Â Not sure why the previous reviewers are bent out of shape about the omelet pan...I'm from Jersey, we don't use pans at our diners. Â Also, it's called the Knotty Pine, why would you expect modern shiny decor? Â Silly. Â It looks like what it sounds like. Â Food was good, portions were large, we left food on our plates and we were full.
Review Source:Meh...it was okay. People get weirdly sentimental about particular neighborhood diners and overpraise them. This place isn't bad, but it's definitely overrated. It takes "greasy spoon" a little too literally, the utensils are clean of course but all the other surfaces (tables, benches, counter, stools) seem kinda greasy. The omelets are cooked right on the griddle instead of in - y'know - an OMELET pan, which makes it easier for the kitchen staff to crank them out quickly but the finished product isn't as tasty and your eggs don't get fluffy like they should be. Some people have commented on the home fries being really good, but I wouldn't know because omelets don't come with home fries (seriously!).
Service is very friendly, but a little unreliable.
It's wicked cheap, so I guess you get what you pay for. I'd rather pay a couple bucks extra and get better food.
Cash only.
What's the big deal, the omelets are cooked on a grill not in an omelette pan. The omelets are flat and not fluffy at all. The home fries are mushy, the blueberry muffins are dry dry dry and limited flavor. I will say service is good and friendly. Prices are good decor is old and dated. Bench seats are not comfortable at all. Will not return.
Review Source:I worked for Star Market in Auburndale several times in the 16 years I was with Star Market. Â Many of the employees went here for breakfast. Â The food was aways great and the price was right. Â Auburndale was one of those communities that time seemed to stand still. Â This was a great place to stop on your way through life. Â I live in Vegas now but I remember the way to the Knotty Pine. Â Hope to see you in the future !
Review Source:Love this little hole in the wall diner!
The booths are a little rough and uncomfortable (there's only about 6 of them), you can also sit at the counter. They only serve breakfast/lunch too and they close pretty early.
The potato's have a little spice in them and are always nice and crunchy on the outside. Their flat top omelette's are pretty good and have the right amount of stuff inside. I'm a fan of their western with cheese!
Awesome breakfast joint!! Â Nothing fancy...simple counter and some booths. Â But, the food was super and the service by the incredibly nice owner and her son made it all so enjoyable. Â Thank you for your kindess, and my son thanks you for the overloaded-on-chocolate-chips pancackes!
Review Source:Hearty Breakfasts At Great Prices!
The Knotty Pine is one of those local neighborhood gems that becomes a regular spot you can go to over and over.
They're open for breakfast/brunch, and have an excellent selection of omelettes, breakfast sandwiches, and lunch items.
It's a small place, with maybe about 25 seats at most. Â There will generally be a little bit of a wait, so plan for this. Â There's not much room inside, so you may end up standing outside while a space opens up.
The service is friendly and quick, and the food is hot off the griddle!
CASH ONLY!
For what it is its 5 star.  I stumbled on this place on a business trip to Newton, when I was looking for  quick breakfast before a morning meeting.  It is kind of an old beat up place, but that is part of its charm.  The family runs the place were very friendly.  There is nothing i love more than a good cup of coffee or hate more than a bad one.  I was not expecting much, but the coffee was as good as any i have ever had at any fancy coffee place.  I'm  on a diet, so they made me egg beaters with a little cheese, that was delicious.  All of it for 7 bucks.  They have a big menu of choices for breakfast.  I was in a hurry so I wasn't there very long, but it was a very pleasant 25 or so minutes.  It is now my official breakfast place on trips to Newton.
Review Source:Good, cheap food.....and Tula, the Greek mom, is a sweetheart.
A real old-fashioned local diner type place, family run
Sadly, not really welcoming to "alternative lifestyles" i.e. gay
Went in with more "flamboyant" friends and haven't been treated nicely since
The younger generation need to return to good customer relations and less attitude.....at this point they're coasting on their mom's strong customer base
Mom and Pop? Yes. Neighborhood joint? Yes. Knotty Pine decor like my Nana and Baba's house and like Don and Betty Draper's house? Yes. Corned beef hash that stops your heart but soothes your soul? Yes. Cute as hell? Yes.
Do I need to go on?
How I love Knotty Pine. Like any good diner, salt of the Earth, and I would eat my last meal here.
I love it. I miss it. I will hit you up next time I'm in the Bean. XO
Tiny Greek Greasy Spoon that serves fast and basic egg breakfasts. Â
Recently, we had short time to grab a bit and ran into a waitress that must have believed we kicked her dog. Â Barely acknowledged for ten minutes, which is an eternity on a Wednesday morning at 8:30, took three trips to bus the table from the previous guests, leave. Â Wipe down the table, leave; set fork and napkin, leave; finally bring the coffee. Â We were ready to leave and skip breakfast all together. Â
Once the order hit the kitchen, the Knotty Pine went back to what we've always experienced: quick good breakfast. Â
The owner even came over to say hello and tell us how she's going back to Greece to visit.
Get rid of that waitress please.
This place has everything you could want from a diner: Great atmosphere, friendly service, friendly customers, good food, fast service, inexpensive price.
Some of the other reviewers completely mislabed this as an expensive restaurant - it is COMPLETELY INEXPENSIVE. There are no items above $6 on the breakfast menu and many items are only around $4.
The Knotty Pine is a breakfast place in my mind, since that's what they do well. Â I grew up here and used to come here with my family when I was a kid. Â The food was always solid, service quick, and the lady usually had some free doughnuts for my brother and me.
It's been a while since I ate here, since I no longer live in the neighborhood, but I remember feeling like I was in one of those diners reminiscent of 1950s Americana. Â Maybe it was the Norman Rockwell prints lining the walls.
Knotty Pine is the stuff of my childhood and I really treasure the memories.
One of the better breakfast diners in the area. Â It's small, has booths, it's simple, service is good, Quote of the day on the wall.
The eggs correctly cooked, bacon crisp (unless you want other-wise). Â
coffee is hot (and real diner coffee, smooth, not bitter, and the right amount of caffeen to drink five gallons). Â
Also, it is run by a Mom and her boys
I've eaten here for many years. It's nice, food is good. Used to want to eat here all the time, but got over it many years ago. Started to feel like I didn't belong. It has the potential to be 4-stars, at least, situated on a venerable street in a venerable town -- Auburndale is the capital of Newton! -- right next to the Commuter Rail Stop along the Mass Pike.
Review Source:What a weird place! It seems like the decor is the bastard child of a skanky motel and a run down sports bar. My dad and I stopped here for lunch one day at work, sat at the bar. I got a tuna melt, he got a grilled cheese and chili.
We had apparently walked in just about seven minutes before closing time, I didn't see the hours posted anywhere obvious, but saw them cleaning and wrapping cutlery for the next day, writing up new signs. My dad however was looking for the sports page and wanted to chat up the guy behind the counter about last nights game.
We accidently stayed past close without upsetting anybody, my sandwich was good, the fries were not. It was filling, and my dad said his food was good too.
Small place on a street corner in Auburndale; six or seven small tables and a dozen or so places at a counter. It seems like the place to go to get a cup of coffee and an omelet, or maybe a pie. I had the blueberry pancakes, which were fine. I read about the Knotty Pine in the Globe Region section, and I was hoping for a bit more; it's on a par with the Weston Road Cafe in Wellesley or Ed's Diner in Natick, and about as cheap. Not that there's anything wrong with that, of course.
