I came to La Condesa for a Yelp Elite event and was totally blown away. All the nibbles we had were out of this world, the staff were so knowledgeable and pleasant and the ambiance is fabulous. As the event was winding down we ordered a round of the Prickly Pear Margaritas. AY CARAMBA! The salt on the rim was hot hot hot in all the right ways. Looking forward to coming back here again!

Don't eat here.  The food isn't flavorful.  It's not Mexican food (although I'm not sure it's trying to be Mexican food).  Overpriced salsa (yes, they charge for salsa).  I've tried the place three times now and never walk away happy - for various reasons.  Service stinks.  Food blah.  Ambience is OK.

There are way too many places to eat in St. Helena to settle for mediocre food.  Pass on La Condesa and head to Goose and Gander, Farmstead, Market, Cook, French Blue, Terra, Press...you get the picture.

Interesting that the Yelp Elite event resulted in great ratings.  Makes sense as they likely know this was a yelp elite event and were on their game.  Not sure that creates flavorful food, however.  Pass.

Really for the younger crowd. A bit too loud and trendy. Food is good. Salsa and guac are great. Gelato is superb. If you want good food in a place where you can't really talk to each other, this is your place.

I loved this place as soon as I walked in. Located on Main St. in St. Helena, the interior of this restaurant fits right in to the artistic community. The food here has a modern twist to a slightly Baja mexican food style. I had tacos on the taco night, they were both full of flavor and unique tasting. Also the chips they serve here are made in house along with the variety of fresh salsa. One awesome thing they have is samplers of their salsa and guacamole! The bar is also very impressive and there are fun mixed drinks. It says three dollar signs but for Napa Valley this place was very reasonable.

I enjoyed the food items i tried at La Condesa. Everything had a little spice in a good way, even the ice cream. Their appetizers were a tasty accompanyment to my favorite part of this restaurant, the drinks. I was most impressed with their selection of mostly original tequila based cocktails. There were some combinations I thought would not work, however they all tasted good in the end. They have a selection of homemade rim-salts that add spice and flavor to the drinks as well. I enjoyed this restaurant very much!

I came here with my husband for the first north bay elite yelpers event.  This place was so cool, we really enjoyed our time here.  We had the most amazing roasted corn with cheese and spices, margaritas, pork sandwiches, freshly made chips, and some really cool ice cream flavors like cream cheese and orange ginger.  There was even live music here!

Attended Yelp event on a Sunday afternoon.  Assortment of snacks were flavorful.  Adult beverages have real flavor, the prickly pear margarita was quite spicy.

Dining room is a mix of CA traditional with hipster accents.

Service people are friendly and accommodating.

try to do at least one good thing each day, and if my review can convince you not to give La Condesa your patronage, then I may have made the world a slightly better place. But I'll let you read about my experience and then decide for yourself.

I walk in around 5:20 pm. Maybe a little early, but I'm not often in that area anymore so I thought I'd grab dinner at a place I'd meant to try for a while. I was really excited about trying their 4 different types of guacamole advertised on the website.

I am greeted at the front by a younger woman dressed in red who looks like she had too much fun at a party the night before and didn't get enough sleep.

I am seated and a tall waitress with curly hair and no emotion on her face asks if I want anything other than water. Considering I've just been seating I tell her I'll take a look at the menu and decide when she comes back.
I'll hand it to them, the place looks nice. Good colors and comfortable chairs. The art on the walls is terrible, but it fits in with the theme of "let's pretend we're poor people in Mexico" vibe.

I am alone, so I look at the menu and quickly decide what I want. Then I wait ten minutes. I can't catch the attention of the waitstaff. After fifteen minutes I go up and ask the sleepy hostess at the front if I can get some service.

A shorter woman comes by, so I guess I've been assigned a different waitress. I order my meal -- no mention of specials or anything like that -- and I ask her a question about a beer on the beer list. She doesn't have an answer. Then I ask what her hoppiest beer is. She also doesn't know. So I ask her if she would find out. She agrees and then asks me if I want something other than water. I have to remind her that she JUST agreed to go and find out more about the beer list.

Again, I sit and wait. Ten minutes later the tall, curly haired waitress brings an open beer bottle to the table. It's a R**** *.
"Did I order that?" I ask.
"It says table 43" She responds.
"I'm sorry, I don't remember ordering anything." I say, apologetic. But I shouldn't be. It's a brand I hate. She takes it away seemingly angry, along with my menu strangely enough.

    The short waitress returns.

"Why did you return the beer?" She asks.
    "I didn't order it." I say.
"It's the hoppiest beer we have. You asked for the hoppiest beer we have." She says.
"I remind her how I was waiting on her info.I wonder why I have to defend myself here.
"Well, what do you want to drink?" She says.
She forgets I don't have a menu. I have to ask for one. The curly haired waitress appears with my food. The short one grabs me a menu.

I asked her more questions about beers on the list, and she couldn't answer any of them. Frustrated and thirsty, since all I want to do is enjoy a beer with my meal I order a common brand. Five minutes later she returns, and apologizes (a first!) saying they are out.

I ask MORE questions about beers on the menu. I am not surprised when I receive a promise to go get more information. She returns with her manager (I assume) yelling information to her across the room. I stand up from my table and just ask him to come over and explain it to me, which he did. I finally settle on a beer, now that I know what I'm ordering.

I get my drink half way into my meal. I'm not sure why it takes so long to cross a small room, but it does. It took me well over thirty minutes to get my drink from when I sat down.

The sleepy eyed hostess -- who I now decide is not sleepy, but is instead dead-eyed because anyone working at this place must have had their soul crushed long ago -- comes around to light the candles on the tables. When she gets to mine I try to make smalltalk and be friendly but she blatantly ignores me. Well, at least the waitstaff is consistent.

Now if the food was good, I could have overlooked some of the missteps of the night. Instead I was greeted with a fifteen dollar "Guacamole Sampler" dish which had four little dollops of grocery store grade guacamole -- three with different items sprinkled on top. THIS was was their famous "different flavors" of guacamole. Really it's all the same pre made stuff, but OH LOOK PINE NUTS ON TOP. LETS CHARGE FIVE BUCKS MORE FOR IT!

I also ordered the "Taco Flight," which smelled like excrement and I couldn't finish. The only edible taco of the three served (no identification of what was what -- I couldn't tell the difference between the tongue and the pork shoulder) was the first taco. Save yourself ten dollars and get it from one of the local taco trucks in the area. It is no different and it will taste better.

The only thing that comes quick is the bill. No "Thanks for dining with us," no "Have a good night." Just a "Go F#@* yourself" silence as I walk out the door.

So there it is. if you really desire overpriced, underwhelming food, and want to get ignored and have your time wasted, by all means frequent La Condesa. Otherwise there are plenty of other good restaurants in the area.

One star for the delicious (I mean really, really good) ice cream-even the weird sounding flavors will surprise you with their deliciousness-seriously...the tomato/chile combo was one of the best ice cream experiences I've ever had-and I'm usually a traditionalist when it comes to ice cream.

One star for the guacamole sampler-again-yummy as can be-and the weirder sounding options are actually the best-who ever thought I'd love *strawberries* for god's sake in guacamole?! But at La Condesa, I do..

and one final star because I like the way it looks inside and the service has been friendly both times I've gone, if a little spacy.

So why not five full stars?

Had to take two away because their entrees just don't meet the mark-if you're going to pay that much for Mexican comfort food like tacos and enchiladas then you have got to not only have excellent ingredients (I'm talking organic GMO free corn, pastured meats, etc etc)  but the food needs to taste like it's worth what you paid for it.

Unfortunately the entrees I've eaten here didn't earn the additional stars-both were on the bland, uninteresting side without the basic subtle layering of chiles and flavors and broths that good Mexican food depends on. Tortillas were whole made-a plus, but got to wonder how much GMO corn I'm ingesting in a basically so-so meal. If it had been truly excellent, I would've eaten my GMO corn without protest, but poisoning myself for no reason is just not my style.

So stick with the ice cream and guacamole for a good time at La Condesa....

Came here for Happy Hour and it was not that crowded. This is a family friendly place and the best part is, the Happy Hour is good throughout the whole restaurant, not just at the bar. There was live music going on when we were here. The chips they give you here are really thin and warm. We ordered all Happy Hour stuff and weren't really that impressed.

The guacamole sampler was the best thing. You can tell they use quality, fresh ingredients. I also had the chicken taco and tuna tostada, which was extremely small (like one bite literally, small). The service was average as she wasn't the most friendly person ever. Glad I came, but there are many other options in the area for next time.

TIP: There are a few parking spots designated for La Condesa in the back but they are few and far between.

I ordered the rabbit for lunch.  The two miniscule pieces of rabbit (both less than the size of a quarter) were delicious, but I was starving when I finished.  I'm sorry --  but I am simply not impressed by a restaurant that clearly cares more about its profit margin than its customer experience. What a rip off.

Had the brunch entree and drinks for two through Gilt. Ambiance was great! Chiliquiles and huevos rancheros with roasted chicken was excellent. If your expecting big bowl is salsa and chips-not for you..Guacamole and Bloody Mary was ok.  Wish the staff were friendlier..that's what was missing ! Would return to try other items

I was in Napa and after all the wine and cheese I needed some elotes and a margarita!!  As you all know I love La Condesa in Austin so imagine my surprise to find one in Napa??  I was over the moon, and the happy hour prices are great.  Not sure if anyone else in the area offers food at this price.  Very efficient service and very friendly too.  The guac rocks!

Great drinks, live music, delicious guac and salsa platters, and food is better than expected!

We can here Friday around happy hour time and stayed for about 3 hours. We ordered:
+ guac and salsa tasting (AMAZING must get. probably the only time you'll get to try strawberry guac)

+ Chips were fresh and warm and unlimited (this should be a standard for all mexican restaurants but i'm always appalled by the number of restaurants that have gross stale chips)

+ Mixta salad was decent - not the best salad I've had but we definitely finished it al

+Tostadita Atun (yellow fin tuna tartare) was delicious as well

+ I ended up getting 3 Pisco Frescas - a more refreshing variation of the Pisco sour.  Loved it!

We didn't stay for the live music but apparently they were going to have jazz-y salsa starting around 8pm that evening.

    - bathrooms are quite a walk. they're in the restaurant but the restaurant definitely goes all the way back

I don't know why people consider this place overpriced. 1) it's Napa and 2) anything lower than $11 for yellow fin tuna would be questionable.

If you're looking for standard tacos, burritos, nachos, ridiculous sombreros - then stop reading this review now and locate your nearest Chevy's.

La Condesa is a whole different kind of Mexican restaurant. They offer inventive, gourmet cuisine that really grabs hold of your taste buds and never lets go. Each dish comes out looking like a work of art. I ordered the Pork Belly Huarache as a starter. For all you culinary laymen (like me), a Huarache is a popular Mexican dish consisting of an oblong, fried masa base, with a variety of toppings including green or red salsa, onions, potato, cilantro and any manner of protein, and then finished with queso fresco cheese. The Huarache I ordered at La Condesa was made with pork belly, black pepper caramel, point reyes blue cheese, fig jam, arugula, tomatillo, apple. It was so beautiful to look at, and even better to eat. The blue cheese combined with the apple and caramel really put this dish over the top.
For my entree, I ordered the Chicken Rojo. Everyone from the waiter to the GM seemed excited about my selection and confided that it was one of their menu favorites. And when my meal arrived at the table, I could see why. This dish was a colorful medley of grilled chicken, pickled corn slaw, charros beans, and sauce. Every bite was a fiesta in my mouth. I can't rave enough about the Chicken Rojo!

The other dishes also looked enticing. My friend seemed more than content with her tortilla soup (spicy tomato broth, chicken, avocado, queso fresco, crispy tortilla, urfa chile) and the Mixta Salad (arugula, cabbage, green beans, jícama, radish, corn, tomato, avocado, cucumber, queso fresco, mustard vinaigrette, and roasted chicken). All the portions were very generous. In fact, I wound up only eating half of my Chicken Rojo and enjoying the rest of it for dinner that night.

Even though it was lunch time, I couldn't resist ordering one of their margaritas. After all, La Condesa offers one of the best tequila & mezcal selections around. I went ahead and ordered the Prickly Pear Margarita (made with tapatio blanco, cointreau, prickly pear purée, citrus, black-lime habanero salt rim). It was a spicy yet refreshing twist to the conventional margarita and perfect for a hot day.

All in all, this restaurant is a real find! If I lived in St. Helena, I could see myself becoming a regular. BTW, they have a stage for live music near the bar. And beginning in May, they will be hosting a weekly "Sunday Funday" where guests can enjoy live music and happy hour. I can't wait to grab a date and check it out.

Highly recommend the guacamole sampler and the delicious horchata. Living in Napa, La Condesa is often a place we take friends/family who visit from out of town because of the consistently awesome food and upbeat ambiance.

I am giving this one more star was the ambience. The guacamole starter was really good but the small plate entrees were terrible. I had the Chicken Enchilada verde which I would have preferred in the ranchero sauce more.

We had asked for Salsa on the side but it felt like ketchup with Chili sauce.

Fabulous margaritas, cozy and trendy setting, and great chips and guacamole. Our dinners, however were not very good. My fish tacos smelled very fishy and tasted that way too. I love fish tacos and was very disappointed with these. My husband had beef soft tacos and was equally disappointed.

Go here to try their wonderful selection of tequila and have a margarita or two. I think I'll skip the entree next time.

Had the steak tacos and salsa, which were pretty good, but the ceviche was the real stand-out.  It was super fresh and citrusy and the fish/shrimp were tender and sooooo good.

    If I ruled the world...

I would gather all my favorite restaurants from around the globe, and have them open up shop on my local main street. Sprinkle in some world peace, and I've found my Utopia.

La Condessa would definitely be summoned to join the ranks of my 'perfect world' faves. It hits on all my requirements for a loveable resto: bright, quirky & comfortable decor; creative comfort food (with a Latin bent), strong, irresistible cocktails that often incorporate Mezcal; and most importantly...a long list of homemade ice creams! Muy, muy bueno.

Condessa is a refreshing stop during a St Helena excursion. While the classy storefronts along Main Street can be intimating to the young, saucy, & budget-minded, La Condessa serves as a refuge for casual luxury seekers. The atmosphere is a blend of kitschy-cowboy-Latin, with bright turquoise walls, "Spanglish" graphic art, and comfortable nooks for couples and groups.

Thankfully, the food is just as alluring. You must get the guacamole sampler, with pomegranate, almond, and apple-enhanced versions. The crab huarache was another highlight: chunky local dungeness crab, corn sauce, queso fresco, salsa, crema & pickled red onion on a maize patty. Chase that with a Prickly Pear Margarita, a bright pink potion with a serious kick!

But don't you dare skip the housemade HELADO! I can proudly put my stamp of approval on most of these flavors: brown sugar banana, cream cheese, birthday, ancho chile, oatmeal raisin, tomatillo avocado, vaca negra, mango ginger sorbet, coconut sorbet...and more!

Prices are way reasonable for wine country, and they provide just the kind of chill-friendly vibe you need after a day of pinky-up wine tasting.

We dropped in for lunch and the place had cute decor and a decent looking menu. But if you step into a Mexican restaurant and all you see are white people, that's your first hint to leave.

The service: I don't think I saw a smile the whole time. He also misinformed me and told me all of the guacamole is pre-made - but the truth is most of it is pre-made, but they can make it fresh on request. Since I can't eat peppers, I thought I wasn't getting guac that meal. (In Napa Valley with that kind of competition, you bet I want my guac made to order.)

The food: Dry, bland chicken tacos. Even the tortillas, which I was told were house made, were over-cooked. I couldn't finish them. The avocado torta was inedible because the entire bun had disintegrated in the salad dressing from the side salad. The sauce that came with it left a bad taste in my mouth. The whole meal left me starving.

The solution: When I questioned the food, the manager (and possibly the owner?) was nice enough to comp the bill and remake the tacos and present me with jalapeño-free guacamole. The tacos were MUCH better on the second round and the fresh guacamole was excellent. I was grateful and happy the higher-up staff took responsibility for quality control and customer care, especially considering the area they're in.

The verdict: The guacamole is worth the cash, but make SURE you ASK that it is made to order. I would give it two stars if not for the stellar treatment by management in the end. Dine in for some tasty guacamole, but if you want a great taqueria for half the price, C Casa in downtown Napa is 10 times more inventive and 100 times the quality.

The food is absolutely delicious, the cocktails are strong and taste great.

Most recently I had chilaquiles to go (on the special menu) and they are absolutely the best chilaquiles I've ever had in my life. I think they made it with mole. Eggs cooked perfectly, chicken is moist. Absolutely perfect! Thanks for the divine experience!

My experience with Condesa is that the service is unbearably slow and the bar staff needs to learn how to smile. Hence the 4 stars. If those two issues were fixed I would give it 5 stars without hesitation.

Based on the taste of the food, I would give this place 5 stars. Based on the taste of the food and the service, I would give this place 4.5 stars. Based on the pricing of the food, I would give this place one star. And based on the portion size, I would also give it a one star. I actually LOVE going there but don't do it often. The food is great. Really, really awesome. But the portion are SO small for what you pay. If you go there knowing that... well, then you go there knowing that!

The chicken torta at lunch is awesome. The salsa sampler is totally worth it - the chips are soooo good! The tortilla soup was really good and really spicy. The hurachas (sp?) are good - they change seasonally I think, but I haven't had one I didn't like. I the worlds TINIEST crab tostadas last time we were there and they were delicious too.

Just what we need.  Yet another "upscale" Mexican restaurant that fails to deliver.  Meh.

4 Stars for the group of salsas and Guacamole.   The chips are great and the salsas are fresh and innovative.   1 Star for the lackadaisical, "I could care less whether you are here or not" service and 1 Star for the criminally under seasoned bland carnitas.  Now how can you screw up pork?  Trust me, these people have found a way.

Guys - The bar should be raised here, you are playing in the big leagues with some GREAT restaurants.  You have the human capital around, the area is crawling with it.  There is no reason that you shouldn't be hitting this out of the park.

I have eaten all over this valley and I can tell you that this place is a complete let down.  Michael Buaer only gave it 2 stars if that means anything to you.

The place was dead, and raunchy rock and roll bounces off the concrete floors like ping pong balls.  It's over priced and over hyped.

Obviously this place resonates with some people, but not me.  Never again.

Love this place. Best chips and guacamole, hands down, and priced great too. They also have a salsa and guacamole sampler with interesting twists, good if you're a creative eater.

Tacos and tortas are delish. The tortilla soup is yummy but pretty spicy so I think next time I'll ask for a more mild version.

Great drinks also. Nice place to go with colleagues or friends, festive but in an elegant way.

I can not tell you what this place means to me..

the first La Condesa is in Austin Texas, I was luckily enough to live on the 17th floor above them.. I visited La Condesa on a weekly basis, it became a second home to me.

I had many birthdays there, many Friday night dinners before heading out to 6th street or 4th street.  My last meal in Austin was here... they loved me so much that my entire meal got was comp'd

I recently found out they opened a second one in Saint Helena.. and I had the opportunity to go there..

    it was like being home

the El Cubico cocktail is out of this world.. tobacco infused tequilla with vanilla infused brandy, and saffrom smoked sea salt,... the guac with lumb crab meat and apples (in austin they did it watermelon).. the mixta salad,

    plus they had loneStar beer

    a Native Texas Beer

i love La Condesa.. it will forever be a part of my life

    You rock

Ambience was great - exciting, bright, huge bar front. Guac sampler was amazing. Best chips we've had since leaving Texas.

What went wrong was the over-inventive approach to basic fare. The tacos were basic and bland. The sides were lacking in flavor and imagination. Even the free desserts weren't enough to overcome. In fact,  they would have been better off without them. Micro cilantro? You mean finely chopped? Not a destination in the future.

Met on Sunday Afternon by Sam (manager) at the bar.
    Sincere and attentive service.
    Great wine pours.
    Average food for the price.
    Would return for Sam's service!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    Try the dipping salsas!!!!!!!!
Guacamole was ok - not special - but good to have for dipping.
    Cerviche was small and uneventful.
    Carnitas Torta was great.
    Mushroom flatbread super savory.
    Sit at the bar.
    Chill.
    Enjoy.

The food kept coming: tacos with warm corn tortillas green sauce, a garnish of cilantro and sprinkle of sea salt, grilled corn on the cob rolled in buttery herb seasoned dry cheese, giant grilled prawns with a julienned cabbage corn slaw, black beans, rice, and the best long fresh green beans that were I think, blanched then finished on the grill and seasoned with maybe, a bacon butter sauce. Platters of biscotti, cookies, flourless chocolate bars, and bowls of sweet caramel pop corn arrived for our dessert.

This feast was donated to the supporters of the Napa Valley Land Trust, the warm evening of Saturday June 16th. One hundred twenty people attended and  this was their first effort at catering an event. Most of the food was completely prepared or just finished on the grill set in a grove of trees in a make shift kitchen beside the Phillips vineyard. This was an outstanding first effort and a generous gesture in support of a local not for profit organization. Benefactors of the Napa Valley Land Trust went home feeling appreciated and satisfied.

Why 4 stars and not 5? I have eaten in the restaurant at least 3 times for both lunch and dinner. I always enjoy an ala carte taco,  guacamole, or tortilla soup and the gourmet mini tostada atun, which is yellow fin tuna sashimi. The margaritas are great. Like others have mentioned here in reviews, service can be on the slow side. If you are in a hurry and/or not in the mood for really good food, head on down the street.

Wow, has this place gone downhill fast!  We had friends in from London and wanted to take them out to another restaurant that didn't take resos and there was an hour wait.  We then walked by La Condesa and thought, "Hey, lets get drunk and eat really good Tex/Mex food."  Well, we got drunk, but the latter part of that statement was a real let down.

Firstly, the place was half full (less really).  Granted it was a Wednesday night, but nothing is empty in St. Helena during the week.  The service was awful...  The poor waitress had the entire front part of the restaurant and we barely ever saw her.  The manager was chatting up the bartender half the night and we had to get up to him and ask to receive the check at the end.

The food was just OK and all of us had uncooked rice - it was hard and crunchy.  In a dead restaurant you would have expected it to be over cooked and mushy, not under cooked.  The drinks were amazing.

Anyway, we won't be going back, unfortunately.  Too bad really.

I obviously have not since returned, but I've heard that that bartender was fired.

Which is a start, but my problem was that it was even allowed to progress to that point by the management anyway. When you kindly point out that you are a paying customer and that a good bartender knows to treat people with respect, you should not be confronted with a man who throws his arms wide and yells out "BUT I AM THE BEST BARTENDER IN THE WORLD!!! (I can't believe I forgot that part in my original review). He should have been removed from the floor immediately and the whole incident could have been avoided. I think the management team should fire themselves.

So we live in St Helena and have been to La Condessa 3 times.  The first two times were late at night...and we just enjoyed sampling several of the "2 Taco" small plates....which were great.
Last night we came for dinner.....and being hungry I decided to have one of the regular dinner plates. I ordered the Chile Relleno for $20.
What a disappointment to see one meager chile relleno.......and that was it....not even rice & beans....for $20!  Come on!  For $20 dollars there should be 2 Chile Rellenos & rice & beans.
I am pretty sure that we won't be back to try the other dinner plates.........La Condesa is a great place for an appetizer late at night....not a place for dinner.
Just wanted to let you know.

Lets get this straight this is not authentic taco truck old school mexican. If you want taco truck just ask local we're happy to help you find one.

This a is a delioucious step out of the same old mexican with great mondern twists. I'll start by saying I love the decor! Mondern, rustic and interesting.

We started with the Guac sampler - very cool take on typical starter. I moved on to the esalada conejo - smoked rabbit and egg topped this great salad. The lunch date had the ceviche aguachile made with hawaiian opa. Top lunch off with a pair of cervesas!

Great food, touch pricy and a bit loud but a wonderful quick lunch spot for us. Will definately be back!

(3.5) I've been told I'm a cheap date. Aside from the obvious meaning such a  colloquialism might suggest, this admittedly accurate assessment also indicates my promiscuity in the arms of easy, inexpensive eats - particularly when it comes to Mexican fare.

As a former Californian, my taste buds and billfold were seriously spoiled due to the easy accessibility of wallet-friendly, mouth-watering Mexican chow. Taco trucks line the streets. Family-run eateries abound. Margaritas flow like so much whitewater.

But despite my affinity for dime-store deliciousness, I can also appreciate a more refined dining experience (on occasion...). So, on a recent trip to Northern Cali, I put down the paper napkins and plastic silverware, and followed some dear friends into the trendy arms of La Condesa.

The atmosphere is bold, with high ceilings, warm colors and a stunning set of lofty bar shelves playing host to hundreds of tequilas. Service was polite and prompt.

The cocktail menu is highly creative; and I'm a sucker for master mixologists. I typically stick with the standard margarita (rocks, salt), but on this occasion I sampled the Alma Blanca, an adventurous concoction that included habanero-infused tequila, corn, pineapple juice and a hibiscus salt rim. It was creamy, heady and left a peppery punch on the tip of my tongue. My only complaint was that it should have been far, far colder.

The guacamole sampler we splurged for as an app was delightfully impressive in its breadth of adventurous flavors. My favorite by far was the pomegranate and queso fresco variety - though I have nothing but praise for all four options. The salsas too, were a sparkling assortment of unexpected twists and spicy turns.

Entree-wise, I went with the chile relleno, a dish I almost never order. I was generally pleased with my selection - though somehow, it left me craving the more substantial tortilla-infused fare I typically choose. The flavor was solid and the pepper appropriately charred.

Alas, the specifics of the dessert we shared escapes me, but it was a cheesecake of sorts infused with either banana or pineapple. I found the flavor somewhat overwhelming.

So, as I emerged from my cheap cocoon, La Condesa satisfied my occasional craving for an upscale, adventurous Mexican dining experience. Now, appetite satiated, I'll happily return to my $2 Tecates and bean burritos, thankyouverymuch.

I hate it when time runs low and there is only about 15 minutes for a drink.  Especially when it is in a cozy, slick-looking spot like this in the great little town of St. Helena.  So, four stars for the Martini that I (sort of) had to speed-sip and didn't even get to check out what looks like a place worthy of trying out a nice dinner.  The bar reminds me of a smaller version of the now shuttered Noonan's in Larkspur - lots of fancy tequilas stacked so high & across that a built-in ladder is in place to get to the top shelves.

People looking for something different that might want to try a place for a (smaller sized?) rehearsal dinner should check this place out.  It actually wasn't busy at all for 6pm on a weekend night - but then again it is "off season" for the area.  I really hope this place does well & want to try out the food in the future!
