I must admit, this restaurant has one of the coziest atmospheres. Not the mention, their food is delicious. Especially their fries.

Came here for guys' breakfast one Saturday morning. Food scored a par. I posted a pic of the breakfast I ordered. There's only a few choices for breakfast. I got the one with eggs, bacon, homefries (they usually have hash browns, homefries were a special that day), and english muffin (you have the option for toast). The eggs were overdone and dry, the bacon was great salty and savory as it should be, the homefries were great too. The english muffin came with a mini jar of jelly. The dish was very small. Even though it was priced low I think I still got gipped. I also had a bloody mary which might as well have been virgin.
Our waitress made awkward comments to us. When my friend asked for flavored coffee she winced and made a disgusted face. My friend asked "whats wrong" to which she replied "I dont like the way it smells". Not knowing what to say my friend politely asked if she could get it for him anyway. When my other friend ordered the fruit breakfast she said "really?". At that point he said "what?? what did i do wrong" and she said "guys dont normally order that one." Which was kinda funny but still didn't need to be said. I think she was just so friendly and comfortable making the guys feel good here but we didn't take well to her comments. I am glad for the story. It's a good one.
As I mentioned prices were good for what we got. I think I paid $16 for the breakfast + bloddy mary + tip. Its a cozy feeling restaurant and by that I mean small and quaint.
There was a group of Antique cars gentlemen that seem like they regular the place on Saturday mornings. Fiats, MG's, Austin Healeys, old European cars. I didn't see any American classics parked around.

Good food, good drink, great atmosphere. Certainly worth a visit if you are in the area. Nothing like sitting outside with a drink and a burger on a spring afternoon.

I couldn't help but respond to a review by another poster. The Main Street Pub is always packed with kids and babies and the hosts are nothing but friendly and gracious. Just because a high chair not available? Glad the restaurant is normally filled with happy, cheerful guests and staff and not the glass is half empty types. It's a great place for people of all ages!

My husband and I stopped in for lunch yesterday with our 15 month old son. We were greeted by a rather rude male hostess who asked "what can we do for you today" as if it wasn't obvious. We asked for a table outside only to be told one wasn't available and were then told that they didn't have highchairs because they are a "pub". We left and won't be going back. I traveled Ireland for 9 days with a 9 month old so I know what a pub is, and each had a highchair and was not only accommodating but wonderful to the baby. As an older new mom I am very sensitive about where we take our son and how he behaves, but I will not stand for such rude, obnoxious behavior. Mind your manners Mr Hostess man and don't be so presumptive about your customers - including the wee ones. Good sandwiches and decent beers served in the back of a tiny (albeit cute) general store doesnt make it exclusive by any means.

Oh and one last thing - just to make sure, I checked the patio when we left and there was a table available. We've eaten out there before with the baby, so not sure why the lies this go around. Rest assured, there won't be another.

Posting to FB too!

Good fish and chip sandwich or platter options. The turkey wrap with sweet potato fries are a nice lunch combination. You may end up smelling a little like the fryer when you leave, but toss down a beer (like a Hoegaarden) and you'll forget about all that. Just don't be upset that the beer doesn't come in the beer's official glass; yes, we know this isn't Belgium! But solid pub fare with friendly service and small town charm.

After visiting a local winery, we wanted a taste of local food for lunch, so we decided to try out the Main Street Pub. Its located in the same building as the general store and next to the florist, so we almost didn't find it. But I'm glad we did! Its a small space tucked behind the general store itself, but nicely decorated. It feels very much like a small town burger joint. The servers were very friendly, and the food was pretty quick. I opted for the rodeo burger, and it was absolutely delicious. You can't go wrong with a burger topped with bacon, cheddar and onion rings. Overall I really enjoyed it!

The BF and I went out for a drive recently to enjoy the beautiful weather and ended up in Clifton. Stopped at The Main Street Pub for apps and drinks. What a cute place! Although it was a little chilly, we opted to sit outside. The had clean, fluffy blankets draped over every chair which I, of course, loved! The server, Joe, was very quick and polite and the food was delish! We ordered the pretzels and poblano poppers. Recommend both menu items as well as the restaurant/pub. A fun little place to visit on some Saturday afternoon

Went there tonight and although the food was still at its 5-star rating was a little concerned about two things. They might not be that big to some but it's the little things that sometimes make the difference. It has been a few months since we have been here and my husband suggested going there tonight.

As soon as we were seated we found out there were no fries in the house - regular OR Sweet Potato. When the waitress took our order I asked what other sides were being offered. (I probably could have read them but I was more focused on my entree selection.) She mentioned most people were getting the onion rings. Ok - we'll take those. Afterwards we realized the menu said it is $1.00 extra for onion rings but to be honest I would have thought there would not be an up charge for the rings. It's not the customers fault that the fries weren't there.

The waitress was very nice but not worth over a 20% tip. Our bill was $45.10 and she ended up with a $10 tip because we gave her $60 in cash and our change was given back as a $10 and $5 bill. Instead of $14.90 which she still would have been getting $9 - smart move not charging us 10 cents. It earned her another 90 cents.

Like I said - little things that might mean nothing to some but it's the little things that mean the most to me. Just did not feel as "warm" as our other visits.

Good place to go in the quaint town of Clifton. Outside seating has a great view of the train going through when it does. Great french onion soup and good beer on tap! Most of the time we get good service. My family was happy with the food and our service.......except for this one staff member who gave a bit of attitude when we had been waiting for 20 minutes to sit outside(it was a nice late summer afternoon) They kept telling us it would only be a few more minutes until our table was ready(like 4 different times), the last person to tell us said that that the table needed to be cleaned, my father asked politely if we could go and sit and she snapped and repeated herself with annoyance! I didn't really appreciate the way she spoke to us, but our sweet male waiter made up for her attitude after we were seated!:) I will still go back! I love this place!

I was surprised when I heard that a pub opened up inside of the Clifton Store. The placed I used to go as a kid was so tiny, how in the world would they put a restaurant in there? I swung by after work one night and was surprised to find a fantastic new place.

The staff is exceedingly friendly; I had a nice conversation in passing with the bartender, who was doubling as a server that night, and recommended a great craft brew on tap. The burger I ordered was cooked perfectly, and was absolutely delicious.

Not a big place to bring ten of your friends, but a great spot if you happen to be in the Clifton are and don't want to shell out an arm and a leg. Bravo guys.

As others have noted the food is fantastic and the wait staff is very friendly. Some of the clientele belong on the set of the 'Real Housewives' but it's what I would expect after driving past their insanely large and beautiful homes. Great place, definitely a must-try.

Like many, I sometimes cut through Clifton as a "back way" home to Manassas from my office in Reston, to avoid the traffic hot spots. I had always seen this quaint little local store and pub and was curious to come back and give it a try. Recently, my wife and I took a short ride over to Clifton to try it out. Overall, the experience was good, and it's a neat out-of-the-way place to go if you are looking for something different.

The site is half local market and half casual pub. You enter through the store in the front and proceed to the back, which is a clean and well-decorated traditional pub (with the traditional pub-green paint). There's a few tables and a small bar area - it's not huge, but doesn't feel cramped either.

Their beer selection is mostly your typical pub fare - Guinness, Harp, Smithwick's - and Starr Hill Amber, a nice option. Their bottled beer selection was mostly standard fare, although the selection to purchase in the market was a bit more diverse. Understanding that I couldn't buy and pop one of those, I went for the Starr Hill Amber.

The menu has a strong selection casual market/pub fare. There is a nice selections of salads, sandwiches and wraps, a create your own burger option with a vast amount of toppings, appetizers, and limited full entree selections. The wife opted for the chicken caesar wrap, while I went for one of the specials - a tomato, fresh mozzerella, and basil sandwich. My sandwich was great - basil and tomato were fresh, with a nice portion fresh mozz. I've had better fresh mozzerella in Italian markets, but this was pretty good. The wife thoroughly enjoyed her chicken caesar wrap.

The service was nice here, and the place had a very warm, local feel to it, even though I suspect they get a lot of passers-through as well as Clifton locals. If you're looking for something different and are in a nearby area, or passing through Clifton and want an affordable bite to eat, check this place out.

Yesterday I had a relaxing spa day in Clifton, VA. Imagine my surprise when the owner of VA Spa & Salon - see review - asked if I was hungry. Normally I'm used to fasting on spa days and while I always leave feeling rejuvenated, on this particular spa day I was hungry. Virginia asked her receptionist to show me some local menus and I ordered from The Main Street Pub.

This quaint restaurant has quite a few 4 & 5 star reviews and rightly so. It's a little shop located in the heart of Old Town Clifton and although my husband raves over their French onion soup I'd never had the pleasure of dining here. Still haven't dined inside but enjoyed their takeout salad immensely. Nice sized with fresh lettuce, cheese, chopped tomatoes, peppers & onions this salad arrived quickly and was served with a great honey mustard dressing for $8.

The pictures on Yelp show a clean, quaint little restaurant that also offers outdoor seating. Virgina asked the owner if they still had their fresh soup of the day but sadly they did not. She had raved over their cool, summer cucumber soup and it's definitely something I'd like to go back and try. Yesterday's offering was another vegan summer soup known as gazpacho and I was excited to try it as mine never comes out quite right. Next time!

Menu is extensive for the size of this place and they seem to have quite the following.

This is a hard one to review. The food there is pretty good and so is the dessert *when it's actually fresh*, BUT, we had the same bad experience happen to us three times!

See, the thing is they have this absolutely delicious coconut cream pie. The first time I had it, it was a little sour. My first thought was that it had a little lemon juice as an ingredient. So I called the waitress over and asked her if a little tartness is normal. She said she wasn't sure - probably not - but could cut me a slice from a fresh pie from their storage cold room in the back. That slice was completely different - no tartness at all! So what they first served me was SPOILED dairy!? The manager/owner came over and told me they'd been having issues with the cold case (and storing dairy pies in there???) but they also said that they don't really taste the tartness. Telling the customer he's imagining things?

A few weeks passed and we went there again for brunch. I ordered the coconut cream pie again since it's so incredible when fresh. This time I alerted the waitress to the problem before and she assured me a fresh pie will be sliced. Low and behold, this slice was literally SOUR. I complained again and she said she agrees - it is a "touch" sour. So they sliced a pie "from the back" again and again it was delicious and fresh. Why can't they fix that cold case??

Another few months passed and we took my in-laws for lunch and we all felt like trying it one more time - just because my father-in-law is crazy about coconut cream pie. We ordered four slices and again mentioned the issues with freshness. Guess what? We got four SOUR slices!! We called over the owner again and he apologized saying "they'd been having issues with the fridge". Seriously? You can't have it fixed after several months of "having issues"?? And you store dairy products and who knows what else in there to serve to paying customers? Please - this is ridiculous and we will never be back. We also tell everyone who plans on going to Clifton about this because it's so crazy. We got four fresh slices - again "from the back". Wow

What could be a bland hole-in-the-wall watering hole with unappealing bar food is instead a true gastropub. The food is fresh, the atmosphere cozy inside and relaxing outside, the prices reasonable, and the staff work hard to make you happy.

I have eaten just about everything on the menu and have yet to be even slightly disappointed. For example, the Bavarian pretzels are absolutely amazing -- fresh soft dough that melts in your mouth and two dipping sauces (cheese and spicy mustard). The crabcake sandwich is fantastic. The cooked-to-order burgers taste great (if yours is dry you probably ordered it well-done instead of medium). The turkey melt leaves you salivating for more. The wraps are flavorful and original. The sides include freshly made potato salad, sweet potato fries, and crisp veggies. There are several decent beers on tap including Starr Hill Amber Ale.

Overall, this is not a pub in the sense that beer is the main attraction and food is an afterthought. Rather, the food is the star of the show and you might as well have a beer to wash it down.

Update (11/27/12): I have been to this place a dozen times over the past year and have recently noticed an overall decline in food portions and quality. I had the beer-battered cod sandwich last week and the fish was so thin I could barely taste it. I left still hungry. Still a nice atmosphere and better than average food for a pub, but I am talking it down a star.

Other than an upscale restaurant in town, this appears to be the only place to eat. The pub is the back section of an old general store with an exposed kitchen. It has an outdoor patio, but you walk through the kitchen and attached flower shop to get to the patio. The flies on the patio were bothersome. We couldn't find the restrooms, we think they are reach by going outside. Food was ok, average, nothing to rave about, mostly sandwiches. Servers were friendly.

I work nearby and my coworkers and I head to the pub sometimes after work on Saturday nights. The pub is such an awesome small town place! In the back of the old general store, it almost has a secret feeling to it. They have great outdoor seating, the food is good to have with a beer and the owners/employees are all great and welcoming. Definitely a great place to go with friends, relax and enjoy music and some beers. GET THE FRIED PICKLES, THEY'RE AMAZING!!

I'm really not sure why this place has such a high rating. It's definitely a true local place. But my friends and I were just all underwhelmed by the food. The burgers are a bit dry.

It's a bit confusing to find, especially after dark. Just look for the old "Texaco" sign on top of the store. And signs that say General Store out front. The pub is in the back section of the general store, and as such has pretty limited seating. But the outdoor seating is pretty nice.

It's a very slow and relaxing place. No unnerving chaos of city dive bars. A nice place to unwind if you live in the neighborhood.

We love this place. The burgers are delicious and the sweet potato fries are the best I have ever had. I have never had a bad meal. The staff is so friendly and always make sure your "cup runeth over"! It is also family friendly. My daughter can't wait for the meal to end so she can pick out a piece of candy in the general store. We love the outside dining area and if it gets too cold they will turn on the propane heaters! The Main Street Pub is one of Clifton's best kept secrets!

What a great place! This is truly a local place, with a great atmosphere. We took advantage of the Monday and Tuesday burger special, and enjoyed great draft beer to go with our meal. The locals obviously enjoy the place as much as we did.

We're definitely coming back when the weather is warmer so we can sit outside on the patio.

Doesn't honor yelp special. Says it was only for June. Crap.

Review Source:

I went here hoping to take advantage of the supposed special that is listed with Yelp. The home page on Yelp currently states that one can get half off of appetizers. The owner basically says that this special is two months old and is not valid anymore. "Yelp should have taken it down." No intent to honor this offer at all. I never saw the owner. This is just what the server relayed from the owner. Ummm, kinda a bad way to do business in an empty pub. If a promo ends one should make sure that you honor it until it is removed. What has a customer got to do with a goof based on business dealings? This is not like one of those goofs where a reasonable person should know better. It is basically the same happy hour special that damn near everyone in town runs.

As I was there with friends and was hungry, I ate there anyway. The food was mediocre to average. I ordered a rueben sandwich that was entirely too soggy. The sandwich needed to be made on harder bread. The onion rings were okay. But onion rings at Burger King are ok as well.

I will say that the servers and staff are friendly. It has a small town feel. But definitely turned off by their too bad so sad attitude.

If I could give it more stars I could.

This is my kinda place...slow pace...genuine nice people, great good, service and prices.

I found a place that serves a country breakfast and I don't have to drive too far.

Inside the Clifton General Store, in the back, near the florist, past the beer cooler...it's breakfast nirvana.

Eggs to order, choice of toast, make mine whole wheat please, bacon, breakfast sausage, hash browns and coffee. They are working on the grits and liver mush...you can't rush perfection.

If you go early on a Sat or Sun morning, Kelly will greet you with a nice smile and a hearty hello!

Does it get any better than this?

Being a native to northern Virginia, it's been sad to see the Fairfax area become so densely populated over the past 35 years and filled with chain restaurants. But the Main Street Pub provides that small town feel and a comfortable place to gather with friends. It's like the "Cheers" of Clifton.

Onto the food -- we usually order the burgers and sweet potato fries. The burgers are always cooked perfectly with a great choice of toppings. Beers on tap are great. Perfect place to unwind for an evening or sit at the bar for lunch. During the spring and summer months, the patio area is a great spot to spend the evening.

Also, excellent service and good people.

4.5 Stars

The Main Street Pub is the reason that I love Yelp.

My husband and I were visiting his parents, and decided to meet a friend for dinner. We searched the entire region and weren't coming up with much outside the major chains (ick). Somehow, Mike came across this place and we decided to go for it.

When we arrived, I was kind of confused to pull up to a country store/gas station, but it looked like a cute country store so I had no problem going in to check it out.

We walked to the back and realized there was a whole little pub and it was beyond adorable. Cracker Barrel wishes it could be so quaint. Very small, though-- no more than 7 or 8 small tables. We ordered drinks (good beer selection on tap, mediocre wines by the glass but that's to be expected) and the waiter/bartender was super nice. When our friend came, we ordered the beer battered cod sandwich with fries and a vegetarian quesadilla. He ordered some open-faced turkey sandwich special with gravy and mash and pretty much licked the plate.

As far as our meal, the cod was surprisingly light and fresh tasting and the fries were great. The only downside was the quesadilla. In NY, when you order a veggie dish, you can expect to get some bell pepper, tomato chunks, zucchini, onion, etc. But as we are learning, in VA, vegetarian just means "leave off meat". It consisted of cheese, cheese, and more cheese. And some jalapenos, and a little bit of tomato, and some more cheese. Sour cream on the side, of course. However, I can't tell if this is a fault of the restaurant or the region. As far as grilled cheese sandwiches on tortillas go, it wasn't bad and we finished everything.

Throughout the whole meal, the waiter kept coming over to check on us and make conversation. Really chill, friendly vibe. I definitely wouldn't have to think twice about coming back to this hidden gem. Maybe I'd stay away from the quesadilla, though.

4.5. I had a craving for a good burger in the area and found this little place. I pass by it on the VRE all the time, but with the Texaco sign I thought it was a gas station. Anyways, I am glad yelp directed me here.

We parked across the street and walked through the front and into a general store. It was kind of odd to have the small pub/restaurant in the back of this general store, but it gave it a very unique feel. We were greeted nicely, seated immediately and provided menus along with the daily specials.

I ordered a burger with American cheese, Jalapenos and sauteed onions. While my fiance got fish and chips. We both got our meals with french fries.

My burger - It hit the spot. I have been craving a good burger for a while and no five guys was gonna do it. In fact, I five guys does absolutely nothing for me. Anyways, the topping were well made and the burger in it's entirety was delicious, from the bun to the meat. My meat was perfectly cooked to a medium rare and was very flavorful.

Fish and Chips - My fiance never had fish and chips, but she loves seafood, mainly crabs and mussels. She loved the fish and chips here, they may have turned her into a fish and chips lover. Anyway, the fish was fresh, tender and crispy. With some malt vinegar it was perfect for her. She didn't mind the tartar sauce either and she typically hates it.

The fries/chips - Wow, nicely battered and extremely crisp. Some of the fries were actually sweet potato, which was a great surprise.

We also got 2 beers on tap with the total coming out to $28. Not bad at all for a delicious meal with friendly service and great atmosphere. This may be my new go to 'pub', just wish it was a bit closer to me ;)

This pleasant little spot makes a mean fish and chips, has good service, and puts nice little touches on everything, like a brown sugar/butter dipping sauce for the sweet potato fries. The fish and chips was a great deal, too, at 10 bucks.

One of the best burgers I have had and the fries are delicious. Perfect! Lots of beers to choose from and great service. Attached to a country market, restaurant is in the back, small, but there is an outdoor patio with additional seating. Been many times, and haven't had a bad experience yet.

The Main Street Pub is literally right in the center of Clifton, VA, where the rail road tracks and the main road meet. It really doesn't look like much on the outside. Just an old time general store look with white trim and benches out front for smokers.

You don't come to the Pub to have a smoke, you come to eat and the best things are offered with slices of bread. The sandwiches are mouth watering, in fact I'm watering as I write this review. The tuna melt is amazing, the BLT is very filling with a thick slice of tomato, but their best sandwich hands down is the Reuben. The corned beef is always hot, the Swiss cheese is also running down your arms, the Russian dressing is dripping onto your plate, and the Sauerkraut has the perfect blend of bite and sour. But the thing that wraps up everything is the buttered rye bread that's grilled on a flattop that the owner says it was built in the 30's. I would put this Reuben against any in the country it's that good and I've had Reubens around the country and this one is excellent.

They also have some decent appatizers but it's all the deep fried stuff that you see everywhere else. They do have something that not everyone offers around here and that's the crab pearls. Something that is wonderful but again deep fried and breaded.

They have a decent selection of beer and wine but they don't have a full bar at the moment. They have Starr Hill on tap which is always a good pairing with the Reuben.

It's an old fashion pub with a convenience store on the front. It's homey, friendly, and serves up some great sandwiches. Excuse me now I'm off to get a Reuben.

Oh, My. God.

Best burger ever.

Seriously. for $7.99 you get a beautifuly crafter piece of meat with your choice of two great toppers no extra charge. I decided to splurg and get 3--chedder, bacon, fried egg. Oh god, heaven heaven heaven. The side of veggies were your typical steam assortment but I got the bright idea to put the spinach and artichoke dip we had as a starter on the burger itself.
Seriously worth the trip out there, its in a really charming area with woods and trains and antiques. All around good experiance, can't wait to come back.

Like any good Australian, I love to eat Fish and Chips. Main Street Pub aims to please in this category :). Best Fish and Chips I've had in the US. They're not greasy, the batter is fresh, and the chips (fries) are unhealthily delicious (i think they're coated with some kind of batter).

My husband ordered a sub of of some description and said it was really good. It took a while to get our food, but the wait was well worth it (and heck, at least we *got* served! http://www.yelp.com/biz/…).

The restaurant is small, but it was packed. We ate outside in their courtyard. It was a little awkward getting there - you have to walk behind the counter where they're cooking everything. It would be good if they could come up with a better solution for getting to their outdoor eating area, but I guess it adds to the charm of the place.

It's a good place to take kids - the table next to us sent their kids over to the nearby train (old caboose that kids can play on) while they waited for their food. We visited the caboose on our way back to our car, and got to wave at people on the VRE as it went past. I laughed as I thought about how you totally don't wave to people on the metro. Haha!
