Not bad and we got our sushi fix.
I've been going to Chibas Sushi in Mission Valley for over 10 years so I'm pretty biased with how I like my sushi but the fact that this place is about 2 miles away from us, I'm content!
We got
Monkey Ball (mushroom & spicy tuna tempura.) - it was actually pretty tasty! big mushrooms stuffed with spicy tuna and coated and deep fried in tempura. I was a little worried of the overwhelming fried oily taste but was impressed. Cruncy mushroomy goodness!
Monkey Roll (inside: tempura shrimp, cream cheese & avocado.) (outside: tempura banana & avocado.) - had a slight sweet flavor from the banana but the eel sauce sort of balanced it. I do like that it was also paired with avocado so you get this creamy sweetnes in your sushi roll. I put a lot of wasabi in my soy sauce so the spiciness neutralized what potentially could be overly sweet. We liked this one for a nice change of pace to what we normally get.
Scallop Roll - basic roll with scallops in it. Not bad. We were surprised how it tasted. Never had it before.
Two spicy tuna handrolls - would have finished it but we got full so we took these to go and will just eat tomorrow for a snacky snack.
And of course, got some hot green tea. It always hits the spot when we get sushi.
I do miss Chiba but for something convenient, this is a pretty cool place.
The staff were polite, especially with the fact that we were there 30 minutes before closing. We were greeted, we placed our order and they cooked everything pretty fast.
Will definitely return!
