Oh My Goodness!!! Horrible!!!  Yelpers have never steered me wrong until now!!! I miss taco mex and decided to try this spot.  I should have known better since they were empty and it was lunch time.  the tacos were ok but the meat was mushy.  I ordered guac and it had a very unusual distinct flavor?  (does guac spoil without turning color?) Oh well on to the next.

The absolute best soft cheese you will find anywhere!  Ambiance leaves a bit to be desired but who cares when the food is so good.  They have delicious tacos, enchiladas, tostadas and the chips and cheese dip are to die for!  Ladies who run the place are very nice and attentive.  An east side tradition for many years.

My Grandmother was born across the street (the short blue house), and I grew up less than a mile from the Mexican Inn.  Mom said she had her first taco here.  In 1962!
I was pleased to see it had reopened by my recent visit to Chicago and the fried tacos were just like my friend's Ma used to make back in the Seventies.  Fried in toto in the pan, meat included and garnished with tomatoes, lettuce, and queso fresco.  Fantastic.

Having heard about the "soft cheese" I tried some but was perplexed.  A bechamel with some velveeta?  Whatever. They have been serving these since before I was born so SOMEONE has to like them!

Strangely, the place is still doing alright despite the "real" (Veracruzeno?) Mexican community that has replaced the Slovenes, Poles, and Croatians I grew up around.

    Might be the crushed ice!

Been going here for over 40 years. Family has reopened the place. Everything is just as good as it has been since they opened, they must be doing something right. They have the best hard shell tacos, the hot sauce / salsa is unlike any other, and the soft cheese is unique to this place, and I highly recommend trying at least on on the side, get it with beef and cheese or just plain cheese. A lot of the customers grew up in this SE Chicago neighborhood years ago, and return to the neighborhood with family in tow for excellent food and service. They do good carry-out business too, so if you can't stick around, call ahead or order there and get it to go!

ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! I'm a northsider and any and every time we are down south, we get it. The beef tacos are to die for. Its unlike any other taco you've ever had and definitely worth trying. The rice and beans are also amazing. It's probably good that I don't have it often because I would be going there all the time if I lived closer.

Try it, you will not be disappointed!

AWESOME PLACE!! I've been going here with my family for as long as I can remember... and my Dad has been going since he was sitting in a high chair!  Anytime there is a craving for a taco... here's the place to go.  Best Tostada's and Soft Cheese taco's.  Awesome everything! Whenever the family gets together we always try to go here.  I've only see them change the decor once in my entire lifetime!! (although they do decorate somewhat for the holidays.) The only downside.... they are too far away, so when you get take out food, it's never as good as if you ate in the restaurant.  In the area at all... go now!!

This is still a great old school Mexican restaurant. The tacos are great. The enchilada was good too. The tamale was great. The "gravy" is just so-so. But this is STILL a great place for tacos. It also has an old-line glass candy counter, Which seems to have disappeared in many eateries. Even though it's nothing really special when there's just ordinary candy, But still a great staple of older eateries that seemed to have vanished at many of them.

    Hello, FOOD SNOB here.
Been going here since the 70s.  Had not been here in a while.  Is as good now as it was then.  The old Mexican lady cooking in the back is making some great Pork Tacos.  My all time favorite the Torta Milieneza is mighty fine.    Refried Beans and Rice all taste homemade.
I don't think the place has ever changed.  Looks like your normal East Side Joint.  What more can you say.    So if your ever in this old Chicago neighborhood check it out.

    Crunchy tacos!

I used to drive past this place on my way to work everyday and stopped in one day when I'd worked late.  The tacos are unique and delicious.  Next thing I knew I was dragging my husband down on the weekends for tacos, and now that we live nearby I eat them far too often.   What a lovely little hidden treasure.

This place has been in business since a time when Mexican restaurants were not on every corner and before most folks even would think of eating Mexican food regularly....if at all.

This is an old established classic that is still going strong!

    Enjoy!

I feel bad giving it two stars but, I did not think this was good food. We've always wanted to eat here, it's been recommended by many acquaintances, and we finally had a chance yesterday. The service was fine, no issues there, but I thought the food we ordered was just OK. The guac was borderline gross. It was like paste, no chunks of avocado, a hint of cilantro by taste but it was pureed so I'm not sure what was actually in there. The quesadillas were just ok, the cheese was not as creamy (maybe they mix chihuahua  cheese with another kind of white cheese?) as I'm used to and it was the only option for my vegetarian friend who came with us. My fiance did not like the marinade for the beef tacos and thought it made them taste "off". To top it off, no horchata.  The one positive I can say is that my fiance enjoyed the pork tamale.

I have been eating at Mexican Inn for 32 years. I have had Mexican food my entire life, and have never found a more tasty, authentic, restaurant than Mexican Inn. The tacos are phenomenal. Try a couple hard beef tacos and soft chicken tacos. The tamales are awesome. Make sure you get gravy on them. The chili is great. Make absolutely sure to try a chicken soft cheese and a beef soft cheese. Mexican Inn=AWESOME!!!!!

Usually when I want Mexican food I want to pick from a bounty of regional specialties: beautiful Oaxacan moles or Veracruz style seafood or fish tacos that remind me of summers on Baja beaches or the lovely and amazing picaditas Guerrerenses at Los Mangos, and a whole host of things I have yet to discover.

And sometimes I just really want some fried tacos. Filled with ground beef. Served in a colorful plastic basket. With the ketchupy taco sauce in the plastic squirty bottle. Hecky yes! Enter the Mexican Inn...

This tiny little corner restaurant channels so much of the Mexican food of my youth in Southern California that it brings me memories of lots of joy - when I ate at a lot of places with combination platters and tacos were always regular (fried corn shell) or soft (flour) - and the birthplace of a different kind of bounty - a bounty of fast food tacos - my beloved Naugles, Del Taco, Jack in the Box tacos and even Taco Bell. (Remember the Enchirito?)  Of course, there are negatives with the positives - I digress-

    Good times...Anyways...

Fried tacos are usually either whole fried and then sometimes finished off by baking (kind of like how the ones at JITB are), or, like the ones here, just the shells are fried and then filled up with stuff that will be a bit reminiscent of Taco Bellish ingredients - ground beef, cheese, lettuce, tomato, maybe a slather of refried beans. And, like here, if you get chicken it has a slightly sweet and juicy quality. My only qualm is that I wish the ones here had more grease - like where the plate under the tacos is all orange and wet afterwards. That is hot. The ones here don't really do that so much though. I, of course, am a glutton though, so you may see that as a positive.

There is a chili sauce that tastes way more like a chile sauce that is really bursting with spices and flavors - somewhat similar to a mole, but not at all a mole. It has me kind of stumped, but it is delicious. I think it would be great as a condiment for the perfectly crunchy fried tacos.

This might seam odd, but their Coke is also especially delicious here - And the fountain drinks here have CRUSHED ICE - score!!!

PS - I saw them cleaning and scrubbing the hell out of the kitchen when they weren't busy. It was sexy.

An East Side institution! If you're from Southeast Chicago, you know this place...If you don't know, best to get acquainted ASAP.

All I know is it's a family-owned Mexican food place. And the food is delicious. I have no idea how close it is to "authentic" Mexican (I'm am but a simple white girl who knows what she likes). It's good. Dig the chips and guac (both made fresh), tamales (oh, I am a sucker for tamales), spanish rice, chicken quesadillas, and tacos, tacos, tacos. Has some pretty comprehensive dinner platters too. All good stuff.

Everyone I know that has had food here loves it. We get it as takeout since the actual restaurant isn't all that special...But I know people travel from places unknown (suburbs and northside mostly) to get the food here. Don't miss out!

This is a staple of my childhood.  I will forever love this place and the dog house across the street.

FOOD:  Mexican Inn was probably the first Mexican food I was introduced to as a child.  My family being from Veteran's Park probably played a large roll in this.  I have never had or even seen an item similar or as delicious as the soft cheese.  I would drive great distances to eat here.  Soft cheese and Crispy beef tacos for life!

DRINK:  Pop is fountain style.  They put about 1 oz. of drink and 7 oz. crushed ice in an 8 oz. glass.  No free refills.

ATMOSPHERE:  This place is quaint and quiet.  The owner usually sits in there and hangs.  Big dude with sideburns tinted glasses and a Mexican Inn cap on.  They leave you alone and let you enjoy your food.  It seems the place is always dead, but people come in steady.  You can easily strike up a convo with the owner.

Great people, great place!  It sucks they are closed on Mondays.  They used to close during the Winter to go to Mexico, but I'm not sure if they do that anymore.  If you ever meet a person from the South Side, they will definitely know this place.

This is my favorite taco place ever. I know this is greedy but I will kill myself trying to eat like ten of them. They just have this homemade taste that you will not find anywhere. Its not the best looking place or in the best area but its worth the trip!!!! Did I mention they were very inexpensive!!!

This is my absolute favorite taco place.  I had Mexican food for the first time in my life here when I was in high school. I loved the food there then and I love it now.  The food is authentic, tasty, and all home made.  You can see the people sitting in the back of the restaurant making tortillas and these tortillas still are just as delicicious as they were when I first tasted them more years ago than I will admit to.

This little restaurant is far off the beaten path--near the northern entrance of Calumet Beach, near the bridge where some of the most famous Blue Brothers movie scences were filmed.  It's worth the drive if you're a taco fan.  I do want to emphasize "taco".  Their other food is good but the tacos make them special.

Yes, it's a little grimy. Yes, it's in a not-so-great-neighborhood. But if you're looking for the best, authentic, Mexican food and the world's greatest tacos. This is the place to go!

I live out in D.C. and every time I go to a "Mexican" restaurant out here I really miss home!
