A nice token after work bar located in Needham/Newton line. Â My favorite thing about the place is the setup and layout. Â The restaurants offers more group booths and 4 top highboys that I have not seen in many restaurants in the area. Â The bar hits you right when you walk in.
Service is on par as well as the food. Â Friendly staff and looks like re-occurring companies come here a lot :)
This place is great!
I went in on a trivia night. It starts at 7:00, wish it was 7:30 or 8:00, it would make it much easier for me, but if they did that the place would probably be jam packed. Right on walking in, me and my date were treated like a king and a queen. It was like I had walked in and slipped the manager $100 and said "take care of me", except I didn't slip the manager $100. They genuinely care about their customers, and it shows.
As far as the food, we got french onion soup that was french onion soup, curry fries; which were delicious, and I got a chicken quesadilla that was just how I had expected it. We got some fun drinks and they were delicious. A Pink Lemonade for adults and some other girly drink I'm embarrassed to say that I thoroughly enjoyed. It was a little pricey, but you get what you pay for.
We left happy, full, smarter, and excited to come back. It's a huge inconvenience; it's out of the way, the traffic is a pain to get there at that hour, but we'll be back for sure. Good food. Good service. Good trivia. Good time.
I have passed this place a hundred times and have never wandered in until this past weekend, how bad could it be right? We walked in with a group of 5 on a Saturday night and only had to wait around 5 minutes. The service was great, our waitress was very friendly and helpful. I ordered the Shepards pie and it was OK. The sauce was too light and didnt taste like a true shephards pie sauce. The mashed potatoes on top were tasty and the meat and potatoes were average. The meat tasted like it was minced and came from a can. The garlic bread was fine, toasted white bread with butter and garlic. Friends ordered nachos which they said were fine (lots of cheese!) and the spicy wings were good but very spicy.
The atmosphere was great and inviting. Chachkis on the wall and sports on the TV. Again, the service was great. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive. Overall it was just OK and I am not sure if it worth coming back to.
Visited a few weeks ago on a Friday night. Hadn't been in since the bar was renovated and was pleasantly surprised by the number of tvs and new look. Food is OK - take it or leave it, it won't knock your socks off.
Avoid this place at all costs on Friday nights. It's karaoke night - when we were there it was awful (more so than typical karaoke) and very hip-hop-ish. Â Loud and uninviting. Maybe appealing for the 24 and under crowd?
I stopped by Mick Morgan's for the first time the afternoon of St. Patrick's Day. Â I've been meaning to check this place out and what better time that St. Paddy's Day? Â Overall, the ambiance is pleasant and they had live entertainment, which is somewhat rare for the suburbs, even on a holiday. Â I didn't eat there, so I can't comment on the food. Â The one thing that really threw me is that you'd think that a place that puts itself out there as an Irish pub with at least a dozen Guinness signs hanging up on the walls would know how to pour a pint of Guinness! Â I was very disappointed and surprised when my bartender, who was otherwise nice enough, broke at least 2 rules when pouring my pint (didn't pour it initially at a 45 degree angle and didn't give the first pour nearly enough time to settle, etc.). Â From the other reviews, I don't think I'd ever come here to eat, and based on my experience, I don't think I'll ever stop by again for a pint, so I guess I'll never be back.
Review Source:Awful. Â Went in for a burger and a beer, it was completely unappetizing. Â
Cold refrigerated bun, dry cold small beef (I hope) patty, pale orange tomatoes, and a sad lettuce leaf on top. Â I think I took two bites of the burger, it was just not worth it. Â The waitress was lovely, I didn't even complain, just pointed to the burger and she only charged me for the beer. Â I don't plan on going back. Â Just sad. Â
I didn't chew her out, it wasn't her fault. Â And I tipped her well.
Pretty standard Irish place, good shepherd's pie and beer! Onion rings and calamari were not great but not terrible. The waitress was super friendly and had a very cute irish accent, which I can't help but think added to the atmosphere. I'll most likely be back, but it's not quite close/good enough for me to make the trek often.
Review Source:Just had lunch here. I had the Shepherd's pie it was OK not stellar. The mashed potatoes on top were put on as two scoops looking like an ice cram scooper was used. I find most Irish pubs put on a layer of mashed potatoes and then put it under a broiler for a nice crust on top. The garlic bread served with it had only a hint of garlic and enough wasn't used to really soak into the bread.
One of my companions had the Irish stew and found the meat too hard. Â the other one had clam chowder and grilled shrimp Caesar salad and found both to be OK.
Portion size was good but food was moderately pricey for average food. Went on Saturday afternoon for lunch (12:30 pm). The restaurant in a busy retail area wasn't close to half full ... That should tell you something. At around $60, with tip, for three people for lunch ... There are better choices. We won't be back.
It was cool out and really felt like fall yesterday so when my friend and I spotted Mick Morgan's the thought of a nice Irish stew filled our minds and we just had to stop. The place is nice. Big with raised seats and tables which I'm not a fan of. Tons of televisions showing all sorts of sporting events. My guess is that it's a hot spot for people before and after Patriot games to hang out. They had a great assortment of beers on tap. The prices on their mixed drinks were pretty high; I mean eight dollars for a hot toddy? Really? I got the Irish Stew and my friend got curried chicken (not quite an Irish dish). He loved his but I was a bit disappointed with mine as it tasted just like a simple beef stew that I could make in the crock pot at home and I actually thought Irish Stew would have lamb. The place was not busy but our server came over twice to take away plates that clearly were not empty and we had to tell her no. I found that somewhat rude. It was an average meal and I left full but I'm not sure I'd go out of my way to return.
Review Source:Visited with a few friends tonight. I had a couple of darks n stormy and they tasted great. My friends ordered Guinness off the tap. The nacho appetizers were average as were the accompanying sauces.
I ordered a veggie burger which was strictly ok. I've had much better. The service was attentive, but could have been much better.
All in all, definitely a good place for a hearty conversation over beers and appetizers. I'm taking away stars for the quality of the entrees.
Located just off of Needham Street, the main drag connecting Newton and Needham, Mick Morgan's is an unassuming, unexpected pub located in a spot formally occupied by an Acapulco's Mexican restaurant (which allows for a more spacious dining area than a typical Irish bar). The bar is a new addition to the area, and one of the only sit-down, pub-style restaurants on the busy street. They feature an extensive menu of both Irish and American pub grub options, and have half Price appetizers on Sundays. In addition to a fairly standard 12 drafts (good Guinness) they offer a fairly extensive wine list. The walls are completely covered in Irish-themed memorabilia, but the design, combined with the amount of natural light (again untypical of traditional pubs) felt like an Irish Applebee's, though the bartender's accent and the fact that the owners also manage Tommy Doyle's across town, rescued some of its authenticity.
Review Source:Why does this restaurant advertise themselves as a Irish Pub? The food that was supposedly irish, tasted horrible. The prices were way to high, and the bread that we asked for was stale. The restaurant looked more like an old run down mexican restaurant, with cluttered walls littered with pictures, and cheap memorabilia.
I would not advise people to eat at this establishment. We only ate here because it was close to our house. take the extra five or ten minutes to find better food, better services, and better atmosphere.
Found this place while in the neighborhood and not wanting to stop by the generic chain. Â Service and food were very good. Â Place has a cool environment and feel to it. Â Had an outdoor area where they have live entertainment, but we were there midweek and early so nothing was going on. Â Would definitely go back if we were in the area.
Review Source:havent had a bad meal yet! I havent been to many authentic pub feeling places, but this pub is welcoming and the wall are covered in pictures. Saturday nights they have live music! they also have karaoke nights and trivia nights :D
the first time I went, I ordered the special fish entree, it was really good! my sisters got the steak sandwhich, yep a whole piece of steak between two pieces of bread. it was very tasty.
the second time, my sisters were hoping to get the steak sandwhich again, but it was no longer ont he menu. so we all tried something new. one sister got the meatloaf, nothing to write home about, but it wasnt horrible. other sister got the chicken curry, you can get it over rice or fries. she asked for half fries half rice. the curry was really good!! mom ordered a beef stew of sorts, it was amazing. generous amounts of steak tips in the stew and it was super flavorful. I ordered the special that night which was tbone steak. was a bit over cooked and I forgot to ask for the blue cheese on the side, but that was my fault, so I ended up just picking it off.
the prices are good and the service is good. I will definately be coming back :D
My husband and I are at Mick Morgan's a few times a year and always leave happy. Â The menu has TONS of options and we never have an issue landing on something that suits our mood, whatever it may be.
Despite some of the negative reviews, we've always had a great experience. Â We sit in the bar area, for weekend lunch it is not crowded at all and for Saturday nights, a bit tougher to get a seat at a bar table, but usually doable.
In addition to our lunch/dinner meals, my husband also threw my surprise birthday party here. Â It was GREAT and the owner and staff were extremely helpful and accomodating. Â We had one entire section to ourselves, which included a bar tender/waitress to help with service. Â We had such a great time, we talk about just throwing parties there in the future for the fun of it.
Overall, we'll definitly be going back. Â If you make it, try the chicken nachos, one of our favorites!
Enjoy!!
My wife and I have been to this establishment numerous times since its opening and it has yet to disappoint us in any way. Â The servers are very cordial and attentive. Â The cuisine is varied and delicious, always fresh and well prepared. Â The ambience of the restaurant seems as if we were in a pub in Ireland. Â Usually Needham Street is a road to be avoided, however Mick Morgans makes it well worth the ride.
Review Source:I feel like Irish Pubs are either really good for food or really bad.
This food is really, really bad. Â
Plus, who goes to Needham street to hang out? Â I'm very confused.
Overall, I'd recommend hitting up an Irish Pub that has some better food. Â Although, this place does have a fun atmosphere. Â It definitely feels very Irish-ey. Â So I guess if you're in the mood for some trivia and a beer, and you happen to be stuck out on Needham St. for some unknown reason, this place would be ok.
But do NOT come here for dinner. Just don't.
AWFUL!!!!!!!
Beer was warm and food was cold!! We ordered some appetizers..they tasted like they came out of the frozen food section in the grocery store. Â Onion strings are actually fried wedges of onions. Place was not very crowded and service was still slow. Â First and last visit there.
It's your standard Irish pub grub, but unfortunately, the place was swarming with small children running around screaming, which kind of ruined the whole "let's sit back and unwind with a beer after a long week" atmosphere for us.
All-in-all, the food was good. If you like curry fries, I recommend getting those for an app. The waitress was very nice. We'd likely go back since this place isn't far from us, but we'd make sure to go later in the night when the average crowd age is higher than 10!
Quite frankly, a good pub. I did not go for "traditional" Irish food, so I can't judge that, but I did have a DeLICIOUS Rebel Burger and a couple Harpoons. Just busy enough, not fighting for seats or anything. My friend had the Burger Club and said that was stellar too.
I recommend it. I'll try the Guinness next time.
Despite the negative reviews, I've been to this pub twice with my fiancé, and we've both enjoyed the food, atmosphere and service we've received. The waitstaff check on all the tables in turns from what I can tell, which makes the service more efficient (but not overdone and annoying), and the food has been delicious both times. The burger club I had recently was as delicious as the regular burgers - perfectly cooked at my specifications, and the french onion soup and caesar salad were really tasty. The decor is somewhat chaotic, but friendly and kinda fun. I plan on making more trips back, but as of yet, I have no complaints about the place.
Review Source:I went here with my kids. Â We ordered simple stuff. Â Chix and fries, grilled cheese and a buffalo chix sandwich. Â The chicken tasted like it was cooked in old fryolator oil and had a bad taste. Â
The buffalo chix sandwich was a piece of tasteless grilled chicken with a little Franks hot sauce squirted on top.
The waitress seemed like an Irish truck driver with an icy demeanor.
The environment is pretty comfortable. Â They have TV's showing sports all over the place. Â I might return for a Guinness sometime but the food seemed questionable enough that we wouldn't return to eat.
Pros:
1. The atmosphere is great. When I was there it was busy but spacious and open so you didnt feel crammed at ALL. Its also decorated reallllyy well.
2. Nachos are slammin (salsa not so much tho)
3. The waitstaff were really good especially this guy who may have been the manager? He had an irish accent and he was super nice and friendly
4. The veggie fajitas. sounds weird, but im a vegetarian, and these were AWESOME
Cons:
1. The shepherds pie. I can't attest to this personally, but my boyfriend said it was so blah he had to force it down.
2. This is my main reason for writing the review. My boyfriend and I came here for my birthday because we saw they had a brownie sundae on the menu. We were of course anticipating how good it was going to be, how warm the brownies were going to be.. you get the picture. When we got it, the ice cream was really yummy, but instead of brownies, there was this brown spungie cake. It was gross. It was tasteless, lame and NOT a brownie. Not even close. This was a HUGE disappointment for us.
HOWEVER, overall its a great place and we will be back. We'll just skip the shepherds pie and "brownie" sundae.
Wow...who knew the Irish could make one hell of a burger? Â
Here's what you should do:
1) Go to Mick Morgan's Irish Pub & Restaurant
2) Sit in the bar area - have the short haired woman wait on you (she's awesome - forgot her name!)
3) Turn the menu a few pages to "Footballer's Angus Beef Burgers"
4) Order the Lillywhite Burger (Kildare)
5) Start feasting on this giant burger with cheddar cheese and a fried egg on top.
6) Fall in love.
Favorite lunch spot in Newton!
Great little place!
I went here with a few guys from work, and we ordered drinks, appetizers and (eventually) meals.
From the get-go, I was impressed with this restaurant. While you can somewhat tell the place's origins as a mexican restaurant (Acupulcos) from the wall design, the interior is very nice and inviting.
The beer selection was fine, and pretty much what you'd expect in a place like this. The wine list was also adequate - wine by the glass and bottle was available. They had a few Cabernet's, a Shiraz, etc: certainly acceptable for this type of business.
The food was great! Everyone who had a plate was very impressed with it. I had the scallops and they were excellent - 5 stars! The fisherman's platter was overflowing, and tasted really good too. The buffalo wings were nice and spicy, and cooked perfectly.
The wait staff was attentive, and came around often to make sure we were all set. After having my plate of scallops for five minutes or so, I asked the waiter if I could send my (untouched) mashed potatoes back for some fries, and he had a big plate of fries in front of me in about 30 seconds.
My (minor) complaints:
1. The wings appetizer could have been a bit bigger.
2. No darts or anything. It is a small little place, but a corner to play darts would really be good.
3. Captioning wasn't turned on for the TV's in the bar.
4. The men's bathroom layout is kinda bizarre - the sink is in the back corner where a stall might go.
I'd give it 4.5 stars if I could. Great place - not perfect, but we're going back!
The walls are completely covered/adorned with neat signs and photos that were like candy for the eyes.
As for the stomach, we ordered the curry fries $5.95 for our appetizer which came with a serving of steak fries besides a nice bowlful of a thin tasty curry sauce for dipping. Â An enjoyable treat, but it would be much improved if they'd thicken the curry so that it would cling to the fries better.
For dinner, I got the shepherd's pie for about $10.95 which arrived a big bowlful of ground beef mixed with carrots and peas hiding under two ice cream scoops of a tasty mashed potato. Â I enjoyed scooping the mixture to my mouth on the planks of garlic bread provided.
I sampled the steak tips and found them quite tasty, but the curry chicken looked a little on the dry side - they should be a little more generous with the curry sauce there. Â The chicken chunks however were nice and tender.
*** 9/2012 visit ***
You need to be strong to waitress here - the plates are large and heavy and they are loaded with vittles!
We started off with two appetizers to share -
.Curry Fries - McDonnells Irish Curry sauce served thick and hot with fries on the side. Â $5.95
.Chili Cheese Fries - Fries topped with chili, cheese and sour cream on the side. Â $7.95
The curry was tasty, but would have been better thicker. Â The Chili Cheese Fries were generously covered, but that unfortunately nullified the crispness of the fries.
The Steak Wrap - Steak tips wrapped with tomatoes, lettuce, cheese, onions and ranch dressing $10.95 comes with fries, but since we already had fries in our first course, I traded them in for the garlic mashed potatoes. Â Good choice! Â But oddly enough, of all their food which hit our table, the side of mashed was the only normal sized portion, which made them seem rather skimpy in comparison. Â I ate half of everything on my plate and left with a belly about to bust.
Note - the parking lot for this place is nearly directly across from the McDonald's on Needham Street.
Solid three stars but some room for improvement. I've been meaning to try this place since it opened but had procrastinated since I couldn't find a menu online -- I like knowing what I'm getting myself into -- but ended up there last night (Wednesday) none the less.
Decor was nice. Lots of things to look at on the walls. We were seated at a high top in the bar area which is usually great but the table backed up to the bench on the wall but was way too far from the table which was attached to the floor. I spent the entire meal on the edge of the seat. The bar area was very full and service was very very slow. I think the bartender was also responsible for all the tables in the area which was weird since the rest of the place was pretty empty and had other waitstaff.
Anyway, the food was ok. My friend's burger was good as were the fries. I had ordered a buffalo chicken sandwich, ended up with a buffalo chicken wrap. Not the biggest deal but they put shredded cheddar cheese in the wrap which I don't like and couldn't pick out. While our server offered to have the correct sandwich made, it had taken forever to get the first version to the table so I declined. Big plus is that they let you sub in a salad for the fries without an extra charge!
Wait for the check was very very long -- again a staffing issue I think.
Overall not great, not bad... I'll try again.
Near the boyfriend's house so I wanted to try it. Nice atmosphere, good beer selection, good food and interesting entertainment (Hairy guy on a guitar when I went). Â The portions are decently sized and the waitress was attentive without being annoying. Â Definitely worth going back to again.
Review Source:Ok, so I popped into Mick Morgan's tonight for some dinner and drinks. The menu had a good variety, but I wasn't really feelin' anything in particular. After a little while, I decided to go with the lobster ravioli. It was advertised "in a cream sauce, with penne pasta surrounding the ravioli." So I ordered it, already sketched about the cream sauce. When it comes, I smell the oder of Mac 'N Cheese. I'm thinking "No way is that odor coming from my plate." Sure enough, it is. I essentially get penne pasta in a cheese sauce with lobster raviolis on top, which were subpar to say the least. Needless to say, I couldn't even finish the meal because it was so salty and cheesy. If I wanted mac 'n cheese, I would have ordered that. I wanted lobster ravioli, so I could taste the lobster, but because of the thick, salty cheese sauce, that wasn't possible. Point of story, DO NOT GET THE LOBSTER RAVIOLI!
Drinks were fairly priced and the service was good tho. Don't know about the other food, but the fact that I couldn't even finish the meal brings this review to 3 stars. If the food was better, it would have been 4.
Make that 2 Stars. I'm editing this the day after. I had a horrible night sleeping, kept waking up with a stomach ache. In case if you were curious if this was because I possibly had something else earlier in the day, the person I went with had a greek salad, and they too were up in the middle of the night. What do they put in their food?
Never will eat here again.
I've been here several times, all for lunch as I work down the street. Â I've had the burgers, tuna wrap, & tuna melt. Â Others I've dined with have had the fish burger and the fish and chips and said they were excellent. The service has been good...nothing great, but not horrible. I will definitely go back there again. Â It's busy at times, but we haven't had to wait more than 10 minutes during the busy lunchtime.
Review Source:Newly opened up on Needham St is yet another pub in Upper Falls. Â The menu may look familiar because it is the same as Tommy Doyle's on the other side of town. Â Parking was tight, on a Friday night at prime dining hours. The atmosphere is good, and the place is large, bar on one side and casual dining on the other. Â There was a message stating that karaoke was coming soon, which made me uneasy. Â I don't sing, but I love to watch the horrific American Idol auditions. Â So it could be entertaining or a train wreck.
The menu is nothing special, nothing unusual, but the fish and chips I had was very good, hot and not over battered. Â Nice sized portions too. Â The waitor was attentive while my friend and I chatted and didn't kick us out of the booth either, never hovered.
I may even go back for karaoke.
Anytime a new pub opens near my house I'm thrilled :) Seriously, life in the 'burbs is not always as convenient as living in town. Thank-YOU Mick Morgan for coming to town. I love the Irish flair all over the place and the super friendly and consistent staff. Yep, I've been there like 5 times and its been open a month, that's how I roll. I also love the cool candelabra in the main dining room. A really fun nice touch in the center of the main dining room on a large long table. Different! Also really really love that there are coat hooks everywhere!! Including the bar. Yay! I have a place to hang my coat and my bag. "What is that cow doing out there in the field? Out-Freaking-Standing!"
Seriously, its just a great little extra that that I totally appreciate.
The food is good and completely on par with Tommy Doyle's. I also noticed a sign for Karaoke coming soon. Now that's just fantastic. You can find me here :)
Recently opened in the space formerly occupied by Acapulcos (which moved down the street into the former Ground Round), Mick Morgan's is owned by the same group which operates Farragut House in South Boston and Tommy Doyle's in Newton.
The internal renovations from the old space were very well done; the main bar area was increased in size, it appears additional seating was added in the main dining areas, and a secondary bar was added at the far end of the restaurant. Â There are multiple TVs, but they're not overwhelming - good to keep an eye on a game, but not sports-bar level.
The menu is very similar - perhaps the same - as Tommy Doyle's; not a bad thing since I liked the food there and the same chef, José Amilcar, is involved here.  Portions were good-sized and flavorful.
Service was very good; I would not have been surprised if there were the teething problems typical for a new restaurant, but there were no problems. Â The waitstaff was very friendly and knowledgeable, and Mick Morgan came around to chat and ensure all was well.
Good beer selection and a full liquor license.
Recommended; we'll be back.
