I didn't expect overcooked burgers and poor service from a restaurant that claimed to have been voted "Mississippi's Best Burger", but that's what I got.
After an exhausting day at the beach and Beauvoir, I decided to seek out a good burger joint. Mugshots seemed to fit the bill so off I went. It was an odd time of day when I arrived (2:30 p.m.) so the restaurant was only 1/4 full. I started getting excited when I read all of the signs exclaiming the best burger award, but that excitement quickly turned to frustration.
It took a little while for our server to arrive, but once she did she was friendly. She took our drink order then vanished. It took upwards of 10-15 minutes for her to return with our drinks. Since we had so much time to review the menu, we ordered an appetizer of pow-pow shrimp and our main course. Our server once again disappeared, and didn't return until our food was delivered.
The appetizer and entrees were delivered simultaneously. I will never understand why restaurants do this, and it is quite frustrating. How is the table supposed to decide which item gets cold first? Servers should know how to time the ordering so this does not happen. Considering her disappearing act, it should have come as no surprise that her server skills were equally lacking across the board.
The pow-pow shrimp were billed as a spicy, Thai style shrimp. They were not spicy, and were overcooked. The sauce did very little to improve the taste or texture of this dish. I hoped my "award winning" burger would save the day, but I was wrong.
I should have realized that our experience would be less than stellar when I asked if I could have my burger cooked to a medium temperature. The server informed me that the patties come pre-made and frozen, so all burgers are cooked to medium-well. It is my own fault for not bailing at that point, but surely the "best burger in Mississippi" would deliver. Not surprisingly, the burger was overcooked, and very ordinary. The fries were equally bad.
I found very little to like about Mugshots. Their only saving grace was their beer selection which included all of the Lazy Magnolia brews.
Maybe I came on an off day, or maybe this is their standard. Either way I left feeling very disappointed at the entire experience.
It's ok. I don't know how it's the "Best Burger in Mississippi". We ordered some cheese wedges which seemed wayyyy over over cooked. Burgers are huge but seem too charred at times. The onion rings were meh. I'd stick with the fries, they are pretty awesome. I think the buns could be a tad thinner. Like someone else said, "upgrading" to bacon is a bad idea. Not worth it. The pizza burger is surprisingly awesome. Service is decent as long as they are not terribly busy. Try to get a table close to the front windows, if not, you'll get hints of cig smoke from the smoking section.
