Went with a buddy for some lunch. Â Never again. Â I usualy i am the D. driver. Â the soda was so bland with no taste i asked for 2 new ones same problem. Â then with maybe 10-15 in the entire place i had to wait better than 25-40 min for a burger. Â It was to have caramelize onion i got a lonely single onion ring that looked like it was on the grill for all of 10 sec. Â Â Cant really consider going back with 5+ other places right next door.
Review Source:This place is actually called the Riverside Lounge and is apparently under new management. Â I don't know if they changed owners or not, but I can tell you the manager I spoke with regarding a problem was rude and very unhelpful. Â I will never go back. Â I wish I could give them no stars at all. Â Very sad to have this business in our town. Â Lets hope they go out of business soon!
Review Source:This place is now called the riverside lounge, and is under new "management". The prices are higher, the menu is smaller, the food is worse, and the management staff is rude and uncaring. Trivia night is no longer half off appetizer night, and even the trivia staff has changed. Before there were generally 10-15 teams, this week the bar was desolate and there were five teams including us.
My friends and I used to go to trivia night every week until a few of us moved out of town in september. When we went again this week we were told that our 50 dollars in won gift certificates were now invalid. We had won trivia that night and were hoping to use our gift certificate we had just won in place of our now invalid murphys riverside ones. When we spoke to the manager he said we could not use the new certificate tonight, but had to come another night (it had no text or markings to suggest this). His reasoning behind this was "because I am telling you you can't". We ripped up the gift certificate and are never coming back.
Used to frequent this place when it was still Murphy's and not the "riverside lounge." Went last night for the first time since the change and will never go back. The clam chowder was fishy and seemed like it was straight out of a can. The fries were clearly frozen and so mushy. My buffalo chicken sandwich came out of the kitchen grilled with soggy bacon and a sprinkling of cheese then doused in buffalo sauce. First of all I never asked for my sandwich grilled, who gets a buffalo chicken sandwich grilled? Secondly it does not say that it is topped with bacon nor did I ask for it. I took one bite and couldn't even stomach it. The grilled chicken was also covered in Italian season which didn't go well with the buffalo sauce. They were also out of ranch dressing to go with it.
My salad was a head of lettuce barely chopped and dumped into a bowl and my friend's Caesar salad had no croutons and was covered in a creamy Italian dressing and not caesar. I went with three other people and not one of us could eat our meal. The steak tips were tough and over done and dry and the rice pilaf looked more like whipped white rice with some pepper served with one enormous stalk of inedible broccoli.
We should have known when we went in on a Saturday night at 8 and there were only 3 other parties there that we were in for some trouble. I would never go here again!
So SJ is the owner of the building or the business? Â He keeps changing over owners.....first him, then Sasha, then Glenda and Rich and now Louis. Â WTH? Â The food is always just on the edge of being great, the service wants to be good but because they aren't held accountable they seem aloof and uncaring. Â We were there for over an hour before the chaiis were taken down from the tables...purely because no one would be there to tell the staff that maybe that was wrong. Â We were told that our coupon couldn't be taken but the wonderful (we loved her!!) bartender finally took it after we told her it was our THIRD time trying to come but the other two times the place was locked up like they were out of business! Â
I don't know why I'm going to bother with the step by step of what we ate but I am guessing RJ will "fire" Louis and the next person will want to know these things.
First off.....I know the heat works, turn it on. Â I also know the A/C does not work well, so I'll be more forgiving in the summer.
Buffalo Rangoon...could be your signature item, but make it consistent and serve with a nice dip.
Clam Chowder...I can't remember now seeing it was two weeks ago, but I think you packed it with rosemary....whatever the herb was, it made no sense and ruined the wonderful chowder.
Onion Soup....yup, beef broth with sliced onions. Â NOT worth the 25 mnute wait.
Reuben....could have been good but it was killed with the moutain of mild cheddar. Â I would have been happy with less cheese in order to emphasize the swiss.
Fish and Chips....This is something craveable!!!! Â We would come back again and again for it! Â However, bottled tartar sauce ruined it. Â Pretty easy to make homemade tartar!
We'll be back to try the next owner. Â Louis seems like a really nice guy, but no one should ever be behind a bar when they "own" the place.
The atmosphere is quite comfortable and clean - old brick walls, tin ceilings, and large comfy booths in the bar area. We were greeted without delay by the bartender, and led to a table within 30 seconds. Service was first-rate! No waiting for anything, and the server was more than happy to patiently answer my questions. Buffalo Chicken Rangoon appetizer - spicey delicious; New England fish and chips was outstanding. Portions are HUGE, and the fish was delicately fried and puffy. One of the best fish fries I've had in a long time, served with cole slaw and fries (and malt vinegar, yay!). There are MANY big televisions at the bar - great if you're a sports fan. Next time I'll sit in the back near the fire; there's a couple of TVs in the back as well.. This is a new favorite place, and I'm glad it's in walking distance of my home. The back patio along the river will be great when the weather finally warms up. Don't be discouraged by other reviews - the prices and portions and service were excellent.
Review Source:I like this place, good food, not great, but the atomosphere and energy make up for that. good beer selection, about a dozen on tap. Apps are good, but not quite a rave. Always had a good meal, wife LOVES the pizza, it is very good. The dishes are primarly Irish Pub type food. Lots of TVS for any game you want to see, and a cool back room with leather furnature. Tuesday is Trivia, fun. All and All a great hang, bring a bunch of pals and hang out....
Gutes Essen YO!
This place was sort of empty while the bar next door was full. Â We were instructed to sit by the window and did and then were very much ignored for 15 minutes. Â We were prepared to pan the palce at best, walk out at worst.
That's when they realized where they went wrong. Â We were allowed to move to a newly empties booth, given a new server, comped some drinks and food, and service was, from that point on great.
It's bar food, but, for bar food it was pretty spectacular. Â I kind of wish I lived in Amesbury. Â What a great little town center with Murphy's, in my opinion, being one of the highlights.
Oh, and, want to watch the game? Â Any game. Â It's on at least one of the gazillion tvs.
15 TVs. 15!
I've been to bars with more televisions, but never with this density.
Anyway, we ended up here after the wait next door got unbearable.
It started out a solid 2 star, but the service worked to make us happy, and the food wasn't terrible. The beer was cold. I was surrounded by pretty girls. Life was grand.
I don't really think explaining what I, or my friends ate will matter. The food is passable, but this could be the new spectacular place to go watch a game.
From 50 yards.
13 TVs??? Holy smokes!! Good atmosphere. According to my friend (native Maine-ah) she said the prices were steep. I come from NYC and I thought the prices were good. So it's up to you to decide. Beer = $5.50, mixed drink in tall glass = $6.
No one was overly friendly, people were friendlier at the Carriage Wheel (which was full of Amesbury natives).
Definitely a solid 5/5 for the live band playing!!
Beers are expensive, pours are short, service is terrible if you're over 22 and not friends with the bar/waitstaff. Make sure you check your bill CAREFULLY! The bar staff here "accidentally" overcharges beers on a regular basis which is a tactic I thought was reserved for dive bars.
I haven't eaten here since just after the name change to murphy's, and now I'll no longer be drinking here either.
My family and I stopped here on a road trip to Maine based on the high rating it received on Yelp. Great atmosphere, friendly service, good lunch food (sandwiches and burgers were ordered), and cold beer. Should I ever find myself in the cute town of Amesbury, MA again I will come back!
Review Source:Excellent Bar for watching games and grabbing a few drinks. Â Most of the staff is very friendly and prompt. Â The food is very good as well and the menu has a large offering. Â Tall beers are served until 8pm. Â
Summertime offers outdoor seating overlooking the waterfall and there is a fireplace inside which is used in the winter.
I recomend the wings as an app and steak tips as an entre
Well my second time here was a significant improvement, I guess I shouldn't necessarily knock a place solely because the vast majority of its clientele where in diapers when I graduated from high school. However, you cannot hide the fact that if you are over 23 years old and come here past 10 pm on a Friday you are going to feel very, very old. Having said that, I came in for an early dinner, had a wrap and it was good. The drinks are still on the weak side, but I'm used to the Thirsty Whale type drinks so the comparison isn't fair. Over all, a pleasant 2nd experience so my apologies to the proprietor for my first review.
Review Source:My boyfriend and I randomly ran into this place to get a pint. Â It was early on a Friday evening so there wasn't a lot of people and immediately were sat and had our drink order taken (26 oz Guinness!!!). Â I liked the ambiance - it was exactly what I was looking for. Â Definite bar (tv's and all) with comfy seats that allowed for cozying up or distance.
We ordered boneless teryiaki chicken for an app. Â With the BF being a chef, he will always criticize the food. Â Not his favorite, but I really liked the flavor. Â Good presentation and helpful waitstaff.
For dinner, I got the veggie melt with a side salad and he order fish and chips. Â Food was fantastic! Â The fish was a big filet - I didn't even see any bread. Â Great portion! Â Mine was perfect - all the seasonal veggies I love melty with cheese! Â The chef did an excellent job and we kept praising him - so we got a free Tiramisu!
The waitstaff that we dealt with (don't remember her name) was really nice and stopped by the table often enough to clear empty plates and ask how the food was. Â She wasn't on top of us all of the time but there exactly when we needed her!
We will definitely be back! Â Looking forward to trying other dishes!
Murphy's, you have earned one more star from me!
I went back to check out the changes. Â The food has improved! Â Nachos were better. Â Salsa was good. Â The fries were fantastic. Â I could tell they were hand-cut. Â Crispy on the outside, fluffy on the insides, just the right amount of salt. Â Really delish.
Also, the boy LOVED his burger - said it was great. Â And he's a tough customer.
I didn't notice anything different in the décor, but that's okay because I like it very much already.  Even the neon lights illuminating the liquor bottles don't bother me as much as they used to.  Maybe you're wearing me down in the garish lighting department.  Oh, but I did just notice those large, exquisite pendants hanging down over the booths.  I don't think they are new, but they are lovely. Â
Detraction: Â It was Rock Band night. Â So between that and the music piped in, it got to be rather cacophonous. Â However at that point in the evening, there were more Rock Banders than diners. Â And I'm not sure if it's just when I'm going, but does this place draw a crowd older than 25 ever? Â I'd worry for the future of this restaurant if it is becomes just a place with youngins go to play video games and drink PBR (which they have on tap. Â I prefer mine in a can, but whatevs).
I actually really liked the atmosphere and they had some great beers on tap. Â I had a Magic Hat No. 9. Â I am giving this place only two stars because I was less than satisfied by the food. Â First we orderd the Spinach Dip for a starter, which was on special. Â The dip was kind of watery and they gave us extremely stale tortilla chips which really hurt the meal. Â For my entree I had a Bacon Cheeseburger with sauteed onions. Â The burger was great. Â It was juicy and big. Â Unfortunatley they only gave me like four french fries. Â All in all i thought it was a OK trip and i would go back for beers sometime but I can do without the food.
Review Source:The owner has contacted me and told me that the cleaned house and are making a lot of changes so I gotta give them credit for realizing what was going on and making positive changes to better the place..... Â The look of the place and the atmosphere are great it was just the employees that ruined it b4 so now that they are changing things around Im sure it will be a way better environment and now will have to check it out when I make it back to New England...
Review Source:Mad River Tavern surprised us the first time we went. Â The food is really good and the service is also (consistently) good. Â They have a nice patio out back and Trivia on Tuesday nights. We now try to go for the trivia when we can. Â The food ranges from sandwiches to pasta dishes. Â They have some good beers on tap as well. Â We have never been here on a weekend but have seen the pictures they flash across their many many flat screen TV's. Â I'd say folks appear to be having fun here on the weekends. Â Obviously this is a good place to catch the game with all of the flat screen televisions mounted from every vantage point. Â Well, unless you are seeking to catch English Premier League Soccer. Â Most places fall a little short when it comes to Premier League soccer. Â Alas...
I cannot give Mad River Tavern a fifth star because they really lack in the vegetarian selections. Â Otherwise, excellent choice. Â Come play trivia!!!
The website calls it a new type of restaurant on the North Shore. Â Yeah, I'd agree. Â We don't have a lot of scantily clad waitresses serving bad light beers in Amesbury. Â
Four stars for the tvs.
Three stars for the cool lights.
Two stars for only offering three light beers: Miller, Coors and Bud.
Four stars for the portions.
Four stars for the food.
Three stars for the service.
Four stars for offering weeknight trivia and wing specials.
Three stars for karaoke.
I netted at four stars, but nearly fell off my chair with the light beer selection. Â The food is good and the tvs will be very popular to catch multiple games at once. Â
Overall, go early to eat. Â The food and the tvs are worth a trip. Â Just don't stay too late. Â The crowd got younger and younger the later we stayed and if I wanted to have a beer next to a girl without a back on her shirt, I'd go to Boston.
