One the fence here; quaint place, but it is kind of outdated; it could use some updating. We came to see the Bridge and attractions, but at night there were 0 channels appropriate for my children. I understand you don't go there to watch tv, but at night or early morning it would be nice.
The first night of our stay, there was a wedding. No problem, except out room was right over the reception/ banquet room so we couldn't sleep for a while. I called to switch rooms, but they were booked solid. Also, the bathtub was clogged, and toilet paper not replaced when the room was cleaned, so I had to get it myself.
The big deal breaker though was the coffee...no free coffee in the lobby, and the resturaunt as well as gift shop across the street sold $2 cup that were only about 8 ounces, and were plain horrible. I am pretty sure it was either hazelnut flavored, or the creamer was (but neither was labeled) and that is not good for people with tree nut allergies. When we asked the lady working the counter she said "I don't know, I don't drink coffee".
We tried several pizza places for delivery, no luck so we had to drive to Lexington for dinner...I couldn't justify a $20 per person buffet.
If you do go, go just past the hotel to the gas station for coffee.
Very Disappointed!!
Unfriendly staff. The woman did not know how to do a AAA discount on the computer; Â claimed what I got was the discount which isn't. Â Good thing that I check their website for the price.
I stayed only 1 night and couldn't get out of there fast enough the next day!
The room is old. Old shower.
The Wing chair have a huge NASTY black stain on it.
There were cookie crumbs on the floor and old tootsie rolls stuck on the carpet.
On check out I told the women in charge about the issues;
No apologies from her.
Not the way to do business lady.
Would not recommend this place.
This place cost me more than the Nice Red Roof Inn I stayed at the
night before this place.
Romantic Accommodations!
If you are looking for a place to stay with an active nightlife then don't stop here. Â If you are looking for a romantic place to stay surrounded by nature then this is the perfect place. Â We were traveling down the Blue Ridge Parkway and needed to stop for the night. Â My husband found this place. Â We purchased the package with an all attraction ticket and free breakfast. Â We stayed longer the second day than we originally planned so we could enjoy all of the attractions.
The room was very nice and clean. Â We had a king sized bed with a balcony with a great view overlooking the mountains. Â They provide a hair dryer, shampoo, conditioner, soap, and lotion. Â The TV didn't have as many channels available as other hotels but who has time to watch TV in these surroundings.
The dining room opened at 5:30pm with the most amazing buffet. Â The food was fantastic. Â The soup was tomato bisque and it was the best I've ever had. Â The meat selections were pineapple chicken, roast beef, and beef. Â I tried a little of all three and they were all so tender they just melted in your mouth. Â The carrots, green beans, and scalloped potatoes were great also. Â The finishing touch was chocolate cake. Â The breakfast buffet the next morning was just as fantastic as the dinner buffet. Â Breakfast items included scrambled eggs with or without cheese, potatoes, sausage links, bacon, gravy, biscuits, pancakes, cereal, and fruit.
We stopped in the tavern for a drink after the light show at the Natural Bridge and before we turned in for the evening. Â They have a very nice selection of their own wine. Â I had a very good glass of their Cabernet.
Everyone from the front desk clerk who checked us in to the waiters and waitresses in the dining room to the bartender at the tavern were very friendly. Â We had the most relaxing and enjoyable stay.
stayed at this hotel for 4 nights, and ate breakfast and dinner here.
my wife and i enjoyed our stay here. everyone was very nice and helpful the food was delicious not at all what we were expecting. the hotel puts on a wine tasting every saturday i highly recommend it. Â its extremely informal but highly entertaining. the women that does it adds lots of humor. our room was nice, it ran HOT we had our window open on a 34f' night and it was still warm! tv options for foul weather are horrible i think it was about 12 channels. Â the beds were extremely comfortable. i would stay again!
We stayed at both the hotel and ate in the restaurant. Let me begin my saying if I had not gotten a few bed bug bites I might have considered another half star. The hotel is old, the staff is very nice. Â
Our room was fine, had a small fridge and a nice balcony, Â but little things were missing - no extra toilet paper - had to call front desk to get some.Towels were frayed and in short supply.
For dinner we thought we would try the bar area as the dining room is old school formal. Â The bar keeper was very friendly and attentive. We ordered a small
Pizza for an appetizer - it came out with dinner - so we were not charged for that - the salmon dish was very good - the pork chops were very tough and the veggies they were served with we're not edible.
We tried room service for breakfast - the hash browns were yummy! My eggs were good and I got what I ordered although very salty. The other omelet was good but not what was ordered and we had to call to get out food as they were about a half an hour late.
Nice staff - avoid the restaurant check for bedbugs and if you find none you will be fine.
We stayed in both the hotel, and ate in the restaurant. I will write reviews for both.
First the hotel- We arrived earlier than expected and asked if we could check in early. They told us that we couldn't (which I expected to be the case) but gave us our tickets to nearby attractions that came with our hotel stay. The lobby was nice and clean. The staff were always very friendly. The hotel room was merely okay. It *is* outdated, and the bathtub is a very odd shape.
The actual Natural Bridge is beautiful and a wonderful sight to see. I loved being able to walk down the trail. The Drama of Creation was seriously a joke to see. I do not believe in the story of creation, so maybe I am just a bit biased, but the story and the music and the lights and the actual naturally created bridge just DID NOT connect in my mind.
Oh, the Wax Museum... oh.... I think I will write an entire review of that on it's own. It was... terrible.
Okay, so the restaurant-
The food was okay. We had the BBQ buffet in the evening. All the food was decent, nothing really stood out from the rest. (It is buffet food, after all) And, then in the morning we had the breakfast buffet. Again, nothing spectacular, but overall decent. The wait staff, however, was AWESOME!
We attended the wine tasting that was held in the bar on a Saturday night. There was a super friendly bar tender/waitress there (I believe her name was Michelle) that really made the wine tasting worth the money. We saw here later in the restaurant and requested she be our waitress and she did a fantastic job.
Anyway, all in all, we enjoyed our little mini trip to Natural Bridge. It was just what we needed to relax a bit.
First let me say that I upped my review to 2 stars after experiencing some of the stores and attractions in nearby Lexington. Based on what is acceptable in that area this hotel fits in.
First, we stayed in one of the economy rooms. The decor hadn't been touched since the 80's in the bedroom and the bathroom looked and felt like Washington had stayed there, or at least Roosevelt in the '40s. The toilet is the worst part - think either prison or rest area for the look and the flush is as loud as thunder. That means that you and every room near you can make you jump out of bed with a flush.
The entrance way is nice however it felt like cold death when we walked in; this hotel is VERY feeling. The front desk lady is nice however I felt it creepy that she was the only person who we saw staff it over the weekend and we walked in during different shifts.
Not to judge the hotel or patrons - but I would NOT encourage anyone shy of 60 to stay here. During the day I didn't see anyone near our age or younger (I'm in my mid 30's). It's clearly something best fit for the older crowd.
If you're at this inn you're likely not going anywhere for the evening since there's nothing around the hotel that we found - so you may settle in at the tavern on the property. Don't. We ordered a chicken finger platter which was almost identical to chicken selects at McDonalds except more expensive and less tasty. Even though we were one of 3 customers in the tavern, it took over 20 minutes to get our drinks.
This brings me back to my intro paragraph - and that is there's no need for competition since it seems that the accommodations and service here meet what is needed for the area. There isn't a roaring nightlife in Natural Bridge so the meager tavern is fine. The hotel seemed to be on par with what we saw nearby on route 11. If you have to stay overnight, you could probably do better/cheaper elsewhere (even by driving 15 miles or so) but it's your dime and you've been warned.
This review is just for the Colonial Dining Room at the Natural Bridge Hotel and their much hyped Friday Night Seafood and Prime Rib Buffet. In a nutshell, it's ok I guess.
If you value a lot of variety over great quality, then this Friday surf n turf buffet is for you. There's truly nothing wrong with that. It's a great spread of food here from soups and salads to to fried seafood to other southern faves, you'll find something here. I just thought many dishes missed the mark.
The Louisiana Seafood Broil lacked flavor and many of the fried seafood dishes lacked salt. Didn't like how the breading was getting mushy especially for the scallops. The grilled Tuna lacked finesse and was way overcooked and dry. Prime rib was alright but very gristly.
On that note I did like the fried chicken, frog legs, and grilled swordfish. The peel and eat shrimp was fresh too but then again you could get the same at a supermarket.
Service is decent and cordial but nothing stellar. It takes them a while to clear your plates. All in all, it was an ok meal but considering how few dishes truly excelled, I think you can get less, but better dishes elsewhere for the $28.99 + tax per head we paid.
The price is right for this hotel, and though it is old (built in the 60's) it was very clean and solid. Â We stayed in the middle of a heat wave - actually across the street from the main hotel in a "cabin" room. Â The rooms are private and the AC works well. Â The staff in the main hotel is friendly. Â My only complaint about the room is that the sheets were low thread count and a little scratchy.
There is no real town surrounding the area, just the attractions associated with the Natural Bridge. Â We did have trouble finding a place that was open for breakfast on a Sunday morning, and on Saturday night, we weren't able to get a meal at the hotel restaurant (only thing around) after 9pm. Â Sun sets late and they have a show at the bridge, so we figured they would still be open. Â So we went to Applebees in Lexington, VA which is 13 miles away, for dinner, and we had ice cream at the tourist shop for breakfast.
It's a very charming building with a lot of great features: cute lobby, beautiful gardens, and very convenient to the Natural Bridge and all the attractions surrounding the area. The rooms were nice, the sheets were new in the rooms we stayed in - mountain view, two sinks. They accommodated us to give us rooms close together with the other family we visited with.
The Colonial Room, the Inns dining room, however was not the greatest. The food was mediocre and the staff were nice but we felt like we asked for favors for what was basic service that should be provided. For example, refills on water, tables close together, a high chair, or even our check. It was a buffet which was nice for traveling with kids, but the food, especially, the vegetables were not cooked and the taste was just ok. Unfortunately, the choices for dining are limited in the area.
My boyfriend and I traveled from NY to NC and wanted to stay somewhere in between to break up the trip. We went before Christmas, so we were unable to do any outdoor activities. We decided to stay in Natural Bridge, VA. This hotel was such a great experience. From the second we pulled up, the hotel was beautifully lit with christmas lights, and looked like a giant mansion. The website does it no justice. In fact I think the website is old and outdated looking.
When we arrived and went inside to check in the lobby was amazing. Beautifully decorated, and everyone was all dressed up eating at the 5 star restaurant in the dining area. We chose to eat at a local place called the pink cadiallac diner (great food). Our stay was about $70 a night, which was a steal (although we stayed at the drive up hotel area- not in the main part)! The room was nice and clean, no complaints.
In the morning we ate at the restaurant inside the hotel. It was beautifully decorated for the holidays with a southern touch. The waiter was awesome and friendly, and we could not believe that we had a HUGE breakfast that was about $6.00 each. It was amazing. Friendly people, easy access to all of the sights in the area, a definitely great place to stay overnight or for the weekend.
On the down side, the only issues i had was, when i originally tried to call the hotel to confirm my online reservations I think i was on hold for about 10 minutes because there are a bunch of attractions in the area all affiliated with one another I had to go through a whole process just to get the conseriege in the hotel.
Another issue i had was I am not too fond of places that allows pets. Although this place seemed upscale to me, I just always question when a hotel allows pets.. but my room was very clean.
The waiter also told me some people complain of the heat in the main rooms, because they are automatically set, you can not control the temperature. I did not have this problem.
I was pleased with our stay and would highly recommend this place if anyone is doing a road trip or a weekend get away!
