My favorite pizza in the world is Turoni's pizza in my hometown of Evansville, Indiana (<a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.turonis.com&s=cbf2fe195ae0a4cddab2a59c2acad7b2f5d67c014de8a77f938eb053c519f7a8" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://www.turonis.com</a>). Â It comes on a thin, crisp, cracker-like crust. Â And the toppings are always delicious. Â I have found it a little hard to find a similarly delicious pizza since moving to Cincinnati three years ago.
So it was while I was monkeying around on Google Maps looking for a pub/bar/burger joint somewhere near my house that I discovered the Newtown Village Tavern. Â Quickly referencing Yelp to see if this was a location I should visit, I was surprised to see the rare overall 5 star rating, as well as raves about their pizza. Â Better check it out.
This is a tavern. Â There is no other way to explain it. Â It's small, but cozy. Â In the main area there were only 3-4 tables (besides the bar) but there was another seating area in the back with a handful of tables. Â My wife and I sat at the end of the bar and were waited on quickly and efficiently and the staff was extremely friendly and helpful.
They had a pretty fair beer selection. Â I had Moerlein IPA and my wife had the special which was $1 Miller Lite, served in a small plastic cup (not the IPA, just the Miller Lite). Â They also had some Mt Carmel Brews, a couple seasonals, a couple imports, and the usual domestics. Â This was just the draft selection. Â
We ordered fried zucchini, which was pretty much just as you would expect. Â Fried zucchini, although the batter tasted like maybe it had some parmesan cheese mixed in to it. Â Enjoyable.
But really, the payoff was in the pizza.
I can't put my finger on exactly what made this pizza so good. Â They only offer thin crust, but it wasn't the crispy-thin of my favorite pizza joint. Â We ordered a medium with ham, sausage, banana peppers and black olives. Â The toppings were toppings, not the best I've ever had, but above average. Â The sauce used was tasty, but I really feel like it was the cheese, which seemed richer than most cheeses. Â Also it didn't seem inundated with the usual amount of grease.
Whatever it may have been, it was absolutely delicious. Â I would heartily recommend checking out this place if you live even vaguely nearby. Â I guess some people might be put off by its size, as it is definitely a "neighborhood" joint, but it was very clean and family friendly. Â I absolutely love the feel of places like this, where conversations can be held at a comfortable volume and both the food and drink are delicious and reasonably priced.
Wow I completely agree with Jennifer G. Â For the standard pizza category: Â Newtown Village Tavern is the best pizza in Cincinnati. Â They don't do crazy gormet style pizzas... but if you want just a regular supreme pizza or pepperoni or whatever you like, this is the place to go. Â I also really like that they have a few local beers on tap, always good to see local supporting local.
The staff was super friendly and open to new people even for being a local spot and they were quick with the pour and happy to assist with whatever we needed.
We will totally be back: to sit on the patio, enjoy a nice cold Mt. Carmel brew on tap and split a pizza.
Village Tavern (and Village Pizza, connected to the bar) has the best pizza in Cincinnati. Â No joke. Â Pizza is my favorite food (I'm quite the gourmet), and I've never had a bad pizza there. Â This is not one of those fancy pizza parlors with crazy toppings (although they do have plenty of "specialty" pizzas, I just don't think they are too "out there"), but their pizza is just consistently great. Â The crust is similar to LaRosa's traditional crust, and they cut it into squares. Â Why are pizza squares so much better than triangles? Â The sauce has great flavor and they are not shy about the cheese. Â My husband and I usually order a large mushroom and pepperoni, and take the uneaten half home to eat cold for breakfast. Â I swear it might be even better cold.
The fried pickles are also great, served with homemade, delicious, incredibly fattening ranch dressing. Â During any televised Reds' game, you can get dollar domestic drafts. Â It is a small bar with four tables in the bar area and several more in the back room. Â The ambiance isn't great, but I'm just there for their delicious food, friendly service, and affordable prices.
