A Westerner's view on 99:
I expected this place to be like your run of the mill Applebee's, or TGIFriday's or some such. I was pleasantly surprised at my first visit and thought it was actually a good bit better.
Something delightfully different is that you get a bowl of popcorn at the beginning of your meal. You New England folk probably don't find this as fascinating as I do, but I have never seen popcorn given pre meal. Chips and salsa? Sure. Bread/rolls? A boring staple. Whole peanuts where you can throw the shells on the floor? Absolutely. But popcorn? A nice, simple, and different treat. I liked it!
My wife and I both had salads. I had the tropical chicken and the wife had the fiesta. Both were great, with a good amount of chicken, and around $11 a plate. Very affordable, with some good flavors throughout. I was tempted to go with the lobster roll, but teetering over 1k calories and dozens of grams of fat (the hot buttered roll is just under 100grams... NO JOKE) I decided I had better not. I think I will try the plain cold lobster salad which has much less fat and is a bit healthier next time.
Overall please. We had been putting off coming here since we really don't fancy chains such as Applebee's, but I am sure we will come again. Service was friendly and food was fast to boot!
I have been here many times. Never really had a bad meal but nothing too spectacular. Lobster roll seemed like it was just pulled out of the microwave. Apps are mediocre at best. Staff was personable in dining room  but at bar non attentive. Would go back due to prices and a filling meal.
Review Source:I opted for the new menu item, Brushetta Chicken. Â OMG. Â It was excellent. Â Tender chicken topped with mozzarella, tomatoes, grilled asparagus, and balsamic glaze. Â Perfect. Â I usually stay away from prime rib because I'm so often disappointed, but hubby gave it a try. Â Naturally, I wanted a taste. Â I have to say that I have never had such a tender and flavorful piece of prime rib. Â It was cooked to perfection and hubby could cut it with a fork. Our server, Erika was top notch. Â Hats off to The 99 Restaurant for friendly service, delicious food and great prices.
Review Source:The 99 has something for most everyone and prices are affordable, but they are suffering from a lack of truly healthy and creative food choices. I mean, a salad at the 9s is iceberg lettuce, shredded orange cheesefood, croutons, and not much else. Service and atmosphere are respectable, prices are decent, and if you're in the mood for a burger or a mild-mannered chicken dish, this is a good place - though not the best. Their strong suit is that they have a little bit of everything...
Review Source:Being from the New England area, the 99 is one of my favorite restaurants back home. Â My favorite entrees: cheese and crackers (they are that good), the broiled sirloin tips, and the potato skins (has always been my favorite appetizer). Â Any time I'm back in MA for a visit, I definitely go to the 99 at least once. Â Love it.
Review Source:YUMMY!!! Â
Food was great, generously portioned, and well priced. Â Lunch for 3 with an appetizer and sodas was less than $40 and we had a little box to take home. Â
The waitress was attentive, the manager a little loopy when I asked a question about a soup. Â I don't think they deal with such questions regularly. Â
Overall, a better option than Chili's, TGI Friday's, Uno's, or Friendly's.
Out of all the chain restaurants such as applebee's and chili's; ninety-nine beats them all! The food is  good and delicious! They always have great deals, so you leave satisfied without feeling you spent an arm and a leg. The customer service is really good at this Salem location. Everything is great, from the salads, to the soups, to the main entree; everything! If I'm in the mood for a quick lunch date, you know which chain restaurant I'll be at!
Review Source:Typical 99 Pub Food...its ok but I would rather go to one of the million middle eastern restaurants around here. Due to its proximity to the malls, its usually pretty packed and you will usually have to wait.
The food is average as you know, so obvi if you are in the area just drive up and down 28 til you find something better.
Went here lat night as I had a $5.00 coupon. They just completed a major renovation and sent every house a coupon to come check it out. It was a Thursday evening and after the dinner rush. Our waitress Nancy was spot on with her service. They took down all the nicknack's and crap on the walls and replaced with 99 restaurant advertising. "99 reasons to come to the 99 restaurant." I got bored quick after #3. I had the turkey tips which most of them were not cooked completely, still pink inside.
Dennis got a burger, and the bottom half of the bun was hard like cardboard, all dried out as it must have been laying out. He only got  a handful of fries, and they were preseasoned, and then salted again after they came out of the fryer.
I am not sure the renovation and changes are all good. This place used to be at least consistent.
