All ahead seating, decent prices, and my favorite steak tips around. Â I'm surprised I haven't reviewed this place before, I've eaten lunch and dinner here countless times. Â It used to be a Denny's back in the day and every once in awhile I get flashbacks of those days... stopping in for late nite food on my way home from nights out in Boston. Â But I digress!
For as much as I like to try new things and new food, I get the steaktips nearly every time I come here.... for 10+ years. Â They are reliable, and their servers are friendlier than most too. Â Rapsy, boston accented waitresses who laugh too loud: exactly the kind of waitress I would want to be! Â They'll make you genuinely want to smile.
If yu read my previous review from today you can guess this is where we went after leaving the previous place disgusted. Exact opposite experience. We settled into the Bar area in a booth and were quickly approached and placed our drink and appetizer order. After delivering our drinks (two Frosty cold Beers) we placed our food orders.
The appetizer was buffalo Chicken Flatbread served with lettuce crumbles of Blu Cheese and two sauces- delicious. Â Next came our main entrees, Sirloin Tips and Chicken Tenders. ( I substituted smashed potato's for fries) Â The tips were seasoned and cooked to perfection as were the tenders. Â Great food Friendly fast service. Great dining experience. Â Hard to beat that.
This review is more about our server, although the food was also very good. Her name was Chelsea, and she was very congenial and helpful, which is becoming rare these days.
My wife's grilled chicken was good.
I got the seafood chowder, which was great. Â Followed by the "Signature" Steak which was worth the $3.-upcharge over the regular sirloin. It was tender, flavorful and trimmed so well, not a morsel was left on the plate. I've paid more for a lesser steak, that's for sure.
I had taken a long break from the 99, but this visit today has won me back as a regular. Thanks Chelsea, for taking pride in your work!
P.S. The $5.- Hot Fudge Sundae we split was was a groove too.
This 99 is hit-or-miss. The meals tend to be quite tasty and the value is usually very good. Service varies widely from visit to visit and the quality control on takeout is moderately poor. I often find incorrect items in the order after arriving home (a cursory check before leaving doesn't always find every item). I still go here as they are very convenient and the value is there.
Review Source:Good food, decent prices and a very chipper waitress named Erin. Â The only downside of our lunch excursion was the french onion soup.
Really, it was more like a french onion STEW, hardly any broth, so I wanted to send it back but hubbie didn't want to stop eating so I just let him finish it off.
He had their meatloaf, which, unfortunately came with bbq sauce on it. Â Will try to remember to ask for NONE of that, thank you very much.
It was juicy but the bbq sauce overwhelmed it.
Lots of TVs around for any type of attention deficit disorder.
I really like the 9's...a lot. Â Nice place to take your mom to lunch. Decent portions, reasonable prices, and efficient service. Â Whenever I've been to the 9's, I've always left satisfied. Â The food isn't the ABSOLUTE best...a bit run-of-the-mill, but I've never had a bad experience dining here, and I've been a patron for over 25 years. Â (Referring to other locations, as well.) Â And you can't beat 'Kids Eat Free After a Sox Win' days.
Only reason I didn't give them more stars is because the 9's experience doesn't exactly blow me away...I just know I can expect a decent meal for a decent price and receive decent service here.
All in all...a decent place to dine.
This place always brings Bill Belichick to mind: It is what it is.
You can be sure there'll be decent food, reasonable prices, a longer wait than they promised, some dick talking loudly on a cell phone; some over indulged, Ritalin-stuffed kid kicking the back of his seat throughout the meal; delicious desserts; a table full of teenagers laughing inappropriately loudly at everything.
In general, an OK place for an OK meal. I thoroughly enjoyed my smothered steak tips on Wednesday night. They were cooked exactly to order and the marinade was, as they boast, so good I really did want to lick the plate. The French fries were hot, crispy and so nicely seasoned that I did not even reach for the ketchup (but did note it's a house brand. Feh! Imaginary points off for not using Heinz!) But really, that half thimble full of Cole slaw? That ain't a side dish, that's a garnish. Dish it up or cut it out!
Tatiana was our server last night- she was by far the most engaging and least annoying server I've ever experienced at a franchise like this. Hats off to you!
I think we ordered enough food that night to try almost the complete page of appetizers. All of them were good enough, which is pretty much where the 9's stays. Solid gastro, no better, yet I've found it worse at times.
I didn't feel rushed to get out of there either - it was almost the only place open at that time of night, in the area, and we were some of the last to leave. Usually I feel like we are getting bounced outta places such as this, but our waitress was really nice and didn't seem to be pushing the check on us. Niiiiice!
99 has great food and good prices. the atmosphere is so so, a little bright, and the decor is a smidge unthemed and lacking -- before renovations, a lot of these locations were better.
my only other complaint is that it isn't so great for drinking and doesn't have a lively or well placed bar. mostly older people, and not too many specials for alcohol. 2 dollar bud select draughts are nice, though.
I do not much care for the 99.
If anyone suggests we go there, I always try to convince them otherwise.
I had to meet some friends here recently for dinner & beers. Â It was fine. Â Actually, it's a nice looking place. Â The bar is cool - buncha HDTVs which is apparently the norm these days. Â But it was clean. Â The food and service are OK but I don't really care for it - it just seems like lazy-american food to me.
We ate at this Ninety Nine yesterday for lunch. Â The wait staff was really great. Â The food was just average, everything was fine, just nothing fancy. Â It was clean, and there were televisions visible from just about every seat in the place. Â Yesterday they had college football up. Â My own complaint was that it was very cold
Review Source:I'm not a big fan of "chain restaurants" but I had to write in about this particular 99. My husband and I randomly ended up in Stoneham a few weekends back and decided to stop in for a quick lunch. The host was friendly and funny. He made a comment "sorry about the long walk" when he seated us at the first/closest table. I like funny people and especially sarcastic so I was already in a good mood. Our waitress, I think her name was Brianne was GREAT. She was so genuine and professional. Our food was decent but overall the experience was surprisingly good.
Review Source:I'm going to use the same word that everyone else has: consistent. It's something that you can count on, no matter which 99 you visit.
Stopped in here on a Friday night, meeting up with some folks for dinner and drinks. I was quoted a 40-minute wait, put my name in and then bellied up to the bar. Once my whole party of 3 had arrived, and we were all seated at the bar, we decided just to eat there. Our bartender was great, keeping our drinks and our popcorn bowl filled, and taking care of our every whim.
Appetizers, entrees, salads, desserts, drinks, all good, all consistent. It's not gourmet, but it's certainly comfortable and homey, and I know exactly what to expect when I walk in the door.
God, the people of Massachusetts don't know how lucky they are. I moved to Southern California a year ago and there is nothing like the 99 here. I agree with everyone else here that the 99 is always consistent and extremely fair on the price side of things. They don't even have Steak tips in California. The 99 is great.
Review Source:The 99's continuously holds the title for consistency. I've never had a bad meal here. The prices are extremely fair and the service is top-notch. This place has become the hub for townies (Stoneham and elsewhere), so there are a lot of regulars. It's right off Rt. 95/128, and I'm sure this prime location has a lot to do with their success. It began the demise (and eventually closing) of the crappy Ground Round down the street. I guess they just did some new renovations which I haven't seen, but apparently they expanded the bar and whatnot. Which is good, because it was pretty small. The bartenders are funny and cool. Hmmm...what else. Service is great, the food is always well-prepared, with quite a bit of variety on the menu. The 99's has a pub-like feel with Americana on the walls, yet it's also very accommodating for children. It seats quite a few people, but unless you do the call-ahead seating, you're going to be waiting for a while during dinner hours. The only REAL reason I don't always like coming here is because I may not want to run into somebody I know!
