Nothin Fancy Cafe & Market

What fun this place was! In a three day stay in Edenton, my wife went three times and I went twice. The "decor" is completely funky. Only part of the room is a restaurant. The rest are various booths with all manner of stuff for sale.

The staff and management are first rate and warmly, genuinely friendly. And then at the heart of it all is the food. My wife had the pimento cheese grilled sandwich - twice. I usually don't like pimento cheese but this one was beyond any I had ever tasted. I had Italian sausage and clam soup. Fabulous! For the second meal, I had fried catfish (which I'm partial to being from Louisiana originally). It was excellent. The sweet potato casserole was outstanding.

All in all, a wonderful place to eat for a good price. Lots of patrons sharing the experience.

Stopped in for dinner for first time tonight.  What treat!  Excellent bar-b-que.  The corn pudding is amazing.  My first experience of tomato pudding - my taste buds were dancing, and the owner gave me her handwritten recipe!  Can't recall a more delightful restaurant experience! Oh yes, the corn bread is in a class by itself!

You don't come to Nothin Fancy for the decor.  True to its word, there is nothing fancy about it.  You come for the food and the friendly service.  The food is prepared in a super-clean kitchen by very capable ladies who apparently have grown up on the dishes they prepare in the back.  I'm a sucker for any dish or dessert that has someone's name attached to.  Let's face it--if you're going to put your name on a dish, it had better be good.  Everyday has a special, and there is that regular menu to look over as well.  You'd be hard pressed to find anything that you wouldn't like.  It's pretty simple stuff, well prepared, and very easy on your pocketbook.

As for the service, you'll have smiles everywhere, but check to see if the owner, Gail, is around.  Gail knows about everything and everyone in this town and she'll be happy to answer any of your questions.  Ask her about her time in India--fascinating stuff--but Gail herself is a local treasure.  You won't find anyone more engaging, more helpful and more good natured in town.
