was here a few nights ago because i had tickets to see MORTIFIED. nice venu, good sized bathrooms, decent (though small) draft offering and decent cocktail offering.

the staff at the front were extremely friendly and quirky.

not sure what else they offer here, but would consider going back to check out other events.

I love Oberon. I mean seriously, where else in Boston can you see a serious theatrical production one week, a glitter gender bending disco extravaganza (the donkey show) later that week, followed by a spoken word throwdown another week, capped off with a circus show at the end? Also, the weirdest, funniest, most gonzo burlesque and drag shows in Boston seem to happen here. There's JUNK, TraniWreck, and so many others. I kind of love it. The staff have always been awesome to me too. I get it, some of the drinks seem pricey, but the bartenders are awesome. Especially Katie - order your drinks from her.

PS - I am really confused by the recent 1 star reviewer who talked about all of the show's she's LIKED at Oberon but thinks weren't "good enough..."

Oberon never ceases to disappoint me. I am shocked to see such glowing reviews. I have seen three different shows at this theatre. I love the concept of the space and I set my expectations too high. I think that ART could put on some amazing shows in this space...I have just yet to see one.

The first show I saw at Oberon was "Prometheus Bound" starring Gavin Creel. Well, enough said...he was awesome enough to make it worth my time. Next up, was the Rocky Horror Picture show...this was fun because I was with a large group of people, but it could have been better. They literally just sang the soundtrack.

Most recently I saw "The Donkey Show." Now I believe this show has been running in Boston for three years every Saturday night. Why??? Now I will admit that I am a bit of theatre snob, but I thought this was really poor quality theatre all around. At times the story was cute and you could follow what was going on and then other times...not so much...and I am a Shakespeare aficionado. So I know the basic storyline they were trying to portray. The male dancers were very good, but even their choreography could have been better. Although I loved their body glitter and they certainly had the bodies to be so scantily clad.

Bottom line: I'm glad I saw "The Donkey Show" because I thought I was missing out on this fabulous theater experience, but I think I will pass on any other shows at Oberon. However, if you are dying to go see a show there...definitely look for ticket discounts because there are many.

Got half price tix through http://Goldstar.com for the Donkey Show. We went to a 7:30pm showing on a Saturday. Took the T to Harvard Square and walked maybe 5 minutes to Oberon. Picked up our tix at the box office and waited a few minutes in line. Once we got in, we got a drink and marveled at the scantily-clad men covered in glitter dancing to disco on platforms. They were great dancers and very entertaining to watch, they must get tired though! The dancing went on for 30-45 minutes and some of the people on the floor were dancing too, but not everybody. The mood was upbeat, but not wild. Once the show started, it was all over the place. Some parts were confusing. The acting is not the best I've ever seen, but I don't think it's meant to be. It's just a fun, song-and-dance performance with lots of cross-dressing and fun costumes. There are a couple of surprises, but I won't give them away.

Overall, a fun night out, but I don't know if I would go back to The Donkey Show. I'd be interested to see what other shows Oberon offers though, and maybe check those out.

I went to the Donkey Show with a group of maybe 12 people, guys and women ages 35-60. We had an absolute blast. Thank God the men danced, because there were a ton of women and everyone was dancing like crazy. The music is all classic 70's disco, it's a riot.

The performance is campy and fun, and silly and wonderful. Lots of gay boys in glitter. They did a great job, and interacted with the crowd, pulling people in to dance and engage. So just a fun, fun night. Even standing in line waiting to get in is fun, the performers come out and joke around.

The venue is big, and black - a typical basic nightclub. There is a decent bar, and they keep up well with the crowd. Coatcheck is a plus. One downside is there is absolutely nowhere to sit, not even for a moment. So if you are in heels, be warned, my feet were killing me afterwards. And don't bring a huge purse, there is nowhere to put it unless you want to check it. So bring some friends, dress to dance, and boogie the night away!

One word: TraniWreck!!! It is incredibly important that you attend TraniWreck. You as in everyone ever born, ever. Some of my best memories in the state have been made at TraniWreck. The Oberon space is well-suited to this quasi-monthly performance event, and it has a lot of smoothness that I appreciate. Smoothness: never have I heard of any drama between Oberon theater staff and performer/organizers; staff seems receptive to accessibility concerns from event organizers and attendees; wide variety of performance possibilities as a result of Oberon being well-equipped (silk aerials! trapeze artists! shibari displays! all of these are possible - and many MANY more - in this space).

And yes, I've seen OTHER events besides TraniWreck in this space, and they have all felt welcoming and pleasant. Music is especially nice here, live music, and anything related to the circus or dancing or stage theater is fun, as well.

I've sat down next to the stage. I've stood near the (full) bar at the back. I've sat up in the mezzanine. I've hung out in the "box" covered area to the right. I've never had a crappy time at Oberon, is my point. The ceiling is very high and contributes to my feelings of non-claustrophobia, and I like the people who come to Oberon events. The crowd is not (to my experience) annoying, and is supportive of performers and other attendees. Only once have I ever experienced someone smoking in the venue! I've never seen a drunk asshole here! Go to Berkelee School of Music, for example, and see what the difference is in your air quality.

I like to make a night of it: start with sushi at Cafe Sushi, go to a show at Oberon, and then go to Zoe's afterward. Parking: meters end at 8PM, but you better be a god of the road, because otherwise you will circle that block for an hour. Better to park craftily on a side street or nearby public garage if it's past 5PM. Until 8PM it's only 2-hour meters, and the fine metermavens of Cambridge WILL ticket your car if you overpark past your two hours!

Basically, go to Oberon. Just pick something that looks cool, and go. It is a nice place! People will work their asses off to put on an awesome show that will leave you feeling good inside. If you're part of the LGBTQQIAA community, you will find a ton of things to partake of, and will smile a lot. Oh, and for accessibility - Oberon is not up ANY stairs: walk/roll/perambulate right in through the front door, down a ~30-foot hallway, and right into the bathrooms and/or main performance space and/or coat check. Love this place!

Went to the sat night 1030 showing of Donkey Show, and it was so much fun. I had no idea what to expect but there were dancers on platforms and disco blasting when we arrived. Fun enough, on it's own merits, and we were enjoying the vibe, drinks and dancing, then the show started! The performers are so talented, I can't really say much without ruining it, but they truly are so engaging and so much fun, it's amazing they can do it 2x in one night. My only regret is that there's no where to sit, even for a moment. You can spend 2x as much to get a table, but it's not worth it, floor is where it's at. Coat check is an absolute must, I should have checked my purse though, really was enjoying the dancing all night!!

Went to Oberon for Rocky Horror Picture show Friday night and it was great. Performers were talented and fun and I love the fact that the action is going on all around you.
Two complaints: 1) The audience is dull and too few people dance. I mean, why bother coming to a music show in a dance floor venue if you're not going to dance? Perhaps there could be dumpy looking people planted as if they are regular attendees to get the action started.
2) You stand in a line at will-call, and then in a line to get in and then in a line for the coat check and then in a line to give someone your ticket and then in another (very, very long) line to get your coat back.

I have still yet to see a production of this type done so well. I've been to several show and the satisfaction is the same as the first time. As a Straight man-I couldn't be more comfortable in my own skin.. Kudos to Staff and performers!

I've only been here twice, once for Traniwreck and the other for Rocky Horror...and loved it both times. The center floor is huge, the sound is fantastic, and the bartenders are friendly AND make a good drink. I'm so glad they were able to host RH instead of a *cough* gay bar in *cough* Fenway..

The donkey show is fabulous.
There was excessive dancing (in a good way), gay guys in glitter, hula hooping, roller skating, and fantastic acting.

The Oberon as a whole is a nice, big venue.

The drinks are strong... ( so strong evidently I cannot recollect the cost at all, so I cannot comment on that aspect.)

Overall - fun times!

This show was amazing and I am sooo excited that I got the cheap tickets on goldstar and was on the dance floor. The dreams were a bit expensive but yummy and strong! I went with a friend and although the crowed was between 40-50 and we were the youngest we had a blast dancing, look at people do the mom dance and dancing with the glittery men!! LOVE them! They were definitely talented dancers.

How they put on the play with music and actors was great! If you are looking for a fun Saturday night and something different than the norm definitely check it out. You will be happy.

Went there for a 10:30 showing of "The Donkey show" with a date. Got a table up near the stage. The place was cool and it was packed - but it was the gayest thing I have ever been to in my life. I don't mean it as a negative term - it was just all gay dudes dancing with glitter. If thought it was gonna be a little wacky and out there but this was basically a gay naked disco.

The tables were to pushed together and I kept turning my head in all directions to try to see what was going on, but the play aspect was weak and a dude in short shorts jumped on our table, did a handstand then a split. WAAAAYYYY to personal for me.

The ratio was about 5 to 1 girl guy - and of the guys there 90 of them were fighting over who got to dance with glittered male performers. I knew it was gonna be wacky but I didn't think it would just be like this. I was disappointed in what it was and thought it had the potential to be a lot of fun.

If you're looking for a place to rub on naked male dancers in short shorts then give it a shot male or female. But if you're looking for anything else you'll be scared out of your mind.

Went here on Friday night to see Prometheus Bound. I won't bother with a review of the show [seriously, Prometheus, stop being a whiner] but just on my experience at the venue.

It was .. okay. In every aspect, just okay. Drinks are about the price you'd expect in this area and were pretty well made. The space is kind of tight, so for interactive shows like the ones put on by A.R.T. there's a lot of shuffling the crowd around during the performance. Getting drinks at the bar pre-show was a bit of an ordeal since so many people were mobbing the bar and there were only two people working it. During the show it was much easier.

There's a coat check, which is nice, and those folks behind the counter work really fast to get everyone their stuff post-show. I really appreciated that since I was a little concerned about the long line when we were ready to leave.

All I can say is WHAT?!?!??!
From the web site we got tickets for the Entomo show, having no idea what we were getting in to, except that it was a play incorporating Beatles music. What we actually ended up in was a piece of performing art.
We got there JUST at 8, the guy at the door took one look at us and got us seats at the table on the stage (we're a middle aged couple and EVERYONE seemed to be college age. I mean I got a drinking band at the door which I've only heard about before but I digress). The stage jutted out into the room, the music was LOUD LOUD and the dancers were dancing dancing all around the stage. Finally the play started, and the crowd of dancers, which attendees to the play were actually part of the play so I was watching people watching and interacting with the actors on stage.
This was an experience.

I'm writing to review the VENUE, not the show we saw (which, by the way, was not the Donkey Show). Hopefully our experience will save you some angst.

Online purchases yield a receipt, clearly labeled as an "e-ticket" with instructions to exchange this for the ticket at the box office. DO NOT simply join the long line of people waiting to get in. DO ask "Where is the box office?" We arrived well before door time, waited in a long line, and then were told that to actually get our tickets we needed to join a different line that had formed in another place (the box office? Hard to tell without signage or help from employees or word-of-mouth) while we waited. We did that, and then were told to go stand in the first line again to get admitted. After you get in, DO NOT simply toss your ticket into the depths of your purse while you wait in line (*sigh*) to check your coat (or leave it in your coat pocket). DO keep it readily available. Despite all the ticket-related hassle you may have experienced, no one has actually checked your ticket yet, and you will need to find it and show it to another door person to actually get into the show.

Once you get in, DO be prepared to jockey for standing room near the stage if you want to see everything. The stage is very low, and a person of average height will not be able to see anything happening close to the floor of the stage unless he or she is standing in the first 2 rows.

These are the things that made me cranky on my only visit to the Oberon. and this review contains the information that I wish I had known before I went. Aside from these issues, I think the Oberon is ok. I sincerely hope this helps someone.

Summary: Dilettante production. Flawed venue (sound&service). Well sub-par for the ART. Just okay for a fun night out.

Of course the first review of the Oberon is for an evening at the Donkey Show:
Pros - It was an entertaining show without the real night club characters and a nice place to dance for an hour or so.
Cons -
1. Sound is terrible. Even 30 years ago no club could survive on "eight track" sound quality. The few attempts of the cast to sing or talk were just indiscernible. I think the singing was bad, but I cannot be sure.
2. DJ ... no concept of transitioning between songs. Please Replace!
3. Price & service ... We had table seats and they were not cheap. We wouldn't mind if we actually had decent service. It took an hour (and a tap on the shoulder) before the waitress showed up at our table.

I went with a few girlfriends to the Donkey Show last night and it was fantastic!!! We went more for the music than the theatrics so we were not all to disappointed in the lack of being able to understand what many of the actors were saying...but the music was fantastic!

Be prepared for glitter, nudity and lots and lots of dancing--all in all the perfect girls night. Drinks were on the expensive side--$9 a pop but strong enough not to complain. We danced our faces off and a few of us even got to be part of the show! Must see for any group of girlfriends looking for a night to let loose and break out that vintage pucci, polyester, and boa thats been in your closet for years!

The Donkey Show? Get ready for more glitter than you ever knew could be contained in one room, sparkly pasties, golden booty shorts, afros, a throwback to a decade when you hadn't been born yet, and a whole lot of campy-ness and A Midsummer Night's Dream told through a musical orgy.

I arrived a little late and missed a portion of the show, so I was utterly confused once I arrived, but it was such a load of fun. It was as if ABBA, those drag queens from Priscilla Queen of the Desert, and the cast of Grease mated and had a baby. I still had no idea what was really going on for most of it, but you're in the center of the show, with half naked actors running all over the place and portions of the stage rolling right past you, so it's exciting and fun all at once.

It's difficult to fully describe The Donkey Show--you really had to be there--but it's a must-see. It may not be for everyone--you really have to have an open mind and love musicals and theatre--but I absolutely loved it. So much energy, glitter, and hilarious sexual innuendo.

Wow, just... wow. A friend and I came here last night for the donkey show and it was quite the experience. We once went to a drag show in Key West where a big drag queen shoved a giant inflatable penis in my face. YET, I can say confidently that this is the gayest show I have ever been to. Think men covered in far more glitter than clothing, women in drag, and incessant over-the-top sexual innuendo.

This show is just so much fun, and I was a huge fan of the glittered-up, scantily clad fairies. The fact that it was dance-y and interactive was really cool.

I was a little disappointed that the show was barely shakespeare at all. Other than the names of the cast, very little else resembled a midsummer night's dream. 70s disco music does not a plot make. But whatever, we still got to groove to funkytown.

I found it interesting that apart from the fairies, the entire cast was played by women. Ironic considering that in shakespearian times, only men could be actors. That was kind of a cool spin.

I had the time of my life, I just wish it had a little more plot and didn't just rattle off 70s songs as an attempt to tell the story.

Also, they do actually simulate a Tijuana Donkey Show. Gross.

I can't believe it has taken me so long to review this- but it truly is as fascinating as everyone says it is! A Midsummer Night's Dream, as told by a sparkly, half naked, disco-dancing cast-- what more could you ask for?! My friend and I felt like VIPs there. Although we were at the end of an enormous line at the door, a few members of the Oberon crew grabbed us and let us in first. It did not take long for us to get pulled into the action, up on stage and grooving with mostly nude men covered in body glitter and tanning oil. I had a great time at The Donkey Show, and I highly recommend it as a way to entertain out-of-town visitors (my friend LOVED it!).

Some useful information: They charge 2 or 3 bucks for coat check (per item), martinis are 11, and it is much more fun to buy the cheaper tickets and be apart of the action than to pay more for a table and be looking down at everyone else having a good time. The only downside to not having a table- no place to put your bag or drinks. I recommend only taking a wristlet, and drinking your cocktails while dancing!

I dragged my mom cross country to see Cabaret and had the most fun EVER!
The theater has a great set up (easy to find the merch, bathrooms and bars) and there is no such thing as a bad seat in the house!
Next time I'm in Boston, I'm making a point to catch a play at Oberon!

I also just saw Abbey Road: An Erotic, Thrilling Interpretation on Friday night. Cool stuff. Lots of glitter, tons of dancers of every shape and size, and a damn good time. The dancers are literally everywhere -- on the stage, on the floor, running up the stairs, or up on the rafters, even dangling from some sheets and doing aerial stunts. Pretty fun night for $25! My favorite costume was Devilicia's silver octopus with lots of tentacles!

Dancing Queen and Shakespeare?? Sign me up!!

It isn't every day that you can go to a club that is completely taken over by disco music, let alone disco music cued up to Shakespeare's Midsummer Night's Dream!

As long as you like disco, sparkly hot pants on men, butterflies on some boobs, and LOTS AND LOTS of body glitter, this place is definitely for you. They reenact the entire play using disco songs, and granted it is pretty hard to follow the actual Shakespeare story line because it is pretty abstract, but if you go with an open mind and an open wallet for those pricey drinks, this place I promise you will be one of the best nights of your life. We were a little shocked to look at our drink bill after so we will drink elsewhere before next time we go, but it is clear why this play has been renewed so many times! You just can't get enough! You basically leave addicted to The Donkey Show! Which sounds very very wrong, but trust me, this place is awesome.

Just watch out for the bathroom though--my boyfriend Matt J. had a guy working for the place in a gold glitter pant suit on roller skates roll right into the men's bathroom and turn off the light while Matt was in there! Pretty random, but then again so is having a show called The Donkey Show being put on in a club in the middle of Harvard Square. Be prepared to dance all night and even be pulled up on stage to dance with some of the stars or hit someone on the butt with a tambourine!! Yup, that happened to our group! So come ready!

And p.s. they have a discounted student ticket at the door only and not advertised online!!

I saw Abbey Road: An Erotic, Thrilling Interpretation and what a way to spend a night! If you are even remotely the type of person that would enjoy a burlesque cabaret, you will love this show. I will admit, this was my first time so I was pretty nervous. I had no idea what to expect but Abbey Road combined all of my favorite things: mermaids, acrobatics, classic rock, and glitter, glitter, glitter.

There wasn't a bad seat in the house, as the show happens all around you. In fact, at one point a giant roll of fabric came down from the ceiling into the middle of the audience and one talented performer did some Cirque du Soleil-style tricks wrapped in the fabric. Really impressive. The music was great and you get to dance along. Can't wait for the next show!

I was in Boston for the weekend and on my first night there my boyfriend decided to take me to a burlesque show at Oberon.

I had never been to one before so I wasn't sure what to expect. I assumed it would be a 20s themed party or something along those lines with men hooting and hollering from their tables.

I was terribly mistaken. The crowd was a mixture of Wills, Graces, and straight couples. It was awesome. When people tried to walk past us they actually said, "Excuse me," and gave polite taps on the shoulder. Who does that? Nobody does that in NYC. It was niiiiice. I liiiike.

We had so much fun...The crowd meshed well together. Drinks were moderately priced (i'm not sure what's normal for Boston but we had $9.00 Vodka Sodas and $7.00 beers (Stellas) don't quote me on those prices).

Overall the scene was very different to say the least. There were men in metallic gold leggings, women in g strings and pasties, and people just dancing to the beat of their own drums.

In between burlesque performances, party-goers were invited to get involved in a friendly dance off. By the third round one man got down to his thong-tha-thong-thong-thongggg. (Pictures speak for themselves)

I'm not sure what Oberon is usually like, but it was a genuine good time. I would go back regardless of the theme of the night.

If your in Boston, hit it upppp for an interesting time.

See ya next time Oberon.

xoxo

I'm actually going to review the space. Because, evidently, lots happens here besides the Donkey Show.

Spacious, high ceilings, theatre black, with all the light and sound one needs to create a sparkling performance - spare but with all the amenities: like a big dance floor, balcony seating around it, large bathrooms, clean, and also with plenty of seating, and a nice VIP area for club sittin' and watchin' and being served drinks. Drinks. . in real fucking glasses, OH YEAH. Sorry, hey. . .I'm sick of going to clubs and getting served sub par rot gut in a fuckin' plastic bleedin' cup for 13 Mother Pheasant Plucking Dollars.. Wow, I didn't know I had so much pent up gall. Primal scream therapy later.

Anyhoo - good drinks with nice juicy lemons in real glasses, great sound system, awesome dancing, great venue. I would not hesitate to see another show or attend an event here.

About Oberon and about The Donkey Show, this dancing queen had her doubts. I mean, disco and Shakespeare? Not exactly the peas-and-carrots, match-made-in-heaven pair you'd typically imagine mingling together in the theater. Even with a drink in hand and the tunes in full swing, I was marginally more confused by the minute as to what exactly what happening...people were dancing, characters from the show were swirling and weaving around the audience and the lights were really bright.

Suddenly, the 'show' began. All around us, a storyline started coming together, A Midsummer Night's Dream taking shape in a psychedelic, drug-infused, 70s sex show. There were certainly moments where my jaw was dangling open at the controlled chaos happening on the floor just inches in front of me, above my head hanging off the balcony and up and down the stairs, stage and in the DJ booth. Without giving too much more away about the experience, suffice it to say that it's called The Donkey Show for a reason.

The set up of the club is reminiscent of the more NYC style super clubs, a la Sound Factory, Exit or Crobar, with a huge dance space, centrally located stage for exhibitions of all kinds, a long, accessible bar, a "VIP area" with seated tables (where they'd normally have bottle service), balconies overlooking the dance floor and a DJ booth that oversees all of the activity below.

If you have the chance before they close, go see The Donkey Show. A witty, hilarious experience covered in glitter, infused with plenty of inappropriate images, all washed down with as many cocktails as you can handle.

This is the show that puts the bad in badonka-donk.

It's sort of like Shakespeare directing a music video in the 70s. If that doesn't sound awesome, then you have bad taste.

I went to the Bent Wit Cabaret last night. Their show on Identity rocked. There was a great mix of entertainment: burlesque, spoken word, comedy, video. The video about the man married to the puppet made me laugh so hard.

I liked the intimate atmosphere. There are tables around a small stage and an ensemble plays music before the show. People were showing a lot of love to each other. Lucky me for it also being pride weekend!

My only complain is that if you're going to charge $8.50 for a glass of wine it should be of better quality that what I drank.

The Donkey Show-- don't get squeamish, it's not what you think! This isn't about some girl with daddy issues in Tijuana, it's a dazzling technicolor disco adaptation of a Mid Summer Night's Dream! If you don't know the story, brush up before you go, or you'll be totally lost.

Beautiful people everywhere, covered in glitter, sporting six pack abs or pasties, or afro wigs. The first hour is just a free-for-all wild disco dance party, so if you're not into that, just come 45-55 minutes late. I highly recommend you catch at least some of the dance party though. Dress as crazy and colorful as you want, I guarantee that someone else will one-up you.

The actors make great use of the space they have, and the show plays out all over the theater, including the dance floor. There's even a bar in the theater to keep that vibe alive. A word to the wise: don't bring any garments you don't want covered in glitter-- even the coat check isn't completely safe from the glitter mania. Dance floor tickets are a must. This is not a show to be enjoyed from the sidelines. A disco-tastic adventure for any glitterati, full of twists, surprises, and lots and lots of shiny things.

The show is OK at best, the $60 price tag for the ticket is definitely too expensive. For this kind of entertainment I would not pay more than $15. This show is suited for bachelorette parties where shrieking women who want to rub up against half naked dudes covered glitter with six packs.

I could have spent my Friday evening doing something better. BTW the drinks were too expensive.

Good stuff! If you love Disco music and dancing around with half naked people in a fun, 70s club atmosphere, than Oberon and the Donkey Show are for you. If you have any averion to 70s music, dancing and/or half-naked people, you might want to stay away. Also, if you are going to get tickets on the dancefloor, I recommend that you wear comfortable shoes as you will be on your feet and shaking your booty for almost two hours. There is no place to sit down unless you have purchased tickets for a table in advance. Also, make sure you're alert to the constant set changes and performers moving around you. They have little whistles to encourage you to get out of the way, but be aware that you might have to move out of whatever area you're dancing in to accomodate a scene change. There is a bar here and the set up is very much like a club. I've been to the Donkey Show now twice. If you love being in a 70s club atmosphere you will love it here.

Fine, maybe I've seen The Donkey Show twice. Who can resist a little theatre in the round with disco and dancing? No really, you're IN the show. YOU are one of the dancers. See, you buy a ticket for either a table or the dance section; I highly recommend the latter for some booty shaking fun. You walk in and music is playing and the little fairy, glitterfied boys are already dancing, getting the crowd hyped. There's a bar, too. Everyone is dancing and having a great time and even the people in the table section sometimes stand up. And when the show starts, it happens all around you, all over the theatre. So smart, SO FUN. If you want to see a great show where you'll laugh and dance and never want to leave, head on down to the Oberon for a good time. I'm just hoping the next show that comes here makes me want to come again and again.

Oh, I'm definitely at least going one more time before it closes in August. Take me to Funky Town!

I went here last Friday for - THE DONKEY SHOW.

I don't think I have ever seen, heard, experienced anything so incredible in my entire life. If I could pick Heaven - THIS IS IT!

It was a visual cluster fuck of color & glitter set to 70s Disco.

BEST NIGHT OF MY LIFE.

The performance was phenomenal - super interactive; the dancers are whizzing by you, all around you, dancing next to you, above you, around you. It's all happening so fast you only know it's real because you somehow end up COVERED in glitter.

After the performance, its a full-out danceathon and confetti falls from the heavens.

I wish this was my life.

I went last week with a friend to see The Donkey Show, somewhat doubtful after the other ART participatory drama, "Sleep No More," but having heard great things from friends who like to dance.

And I looooove to dance.

Where Sleep No More (with admittedly stunning sets) is an intellectually lazy pastiche of "Macbeth" and Hitchcock's "Rebecca" thrown together by someone who seems to have only read the cliff notes of the two sources, The Donkey Show is a clever, very engaging mash-up of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" and "Saturday Night Fever." The beefy bouncers at the door were straight outta Queens, "How ya doin' ladies?" The well-selected dance songs were accessible 70's classics (mercifully Abba-free) that invited everyone to get down with the dishy go-go boy sprites. The action in Oberon's club centers on the preening antics of his strip-tease queen, Tytania. Transferring this Elizabethan story from the forest to a disco club works -- the same spirit of mad, lecherous, gender-bending revelry prevails.

If you want to watch the action from the sidelines, you can buy tickets that come with seats ... but why would you do that?

I'm not sure how to keep a review of OBERON separate from a review of The Donkey Show. The club is just a shell that holds one of the most unique and fantastic theatrical experiences Ive had.
It's a really nice shell, mind you. With a gorgeous light and sound system, but what really brings it to life is the dancers, and the glitter, the sites and sounds of Midsummer Night's Dream happening while you shake your booty to super-70's-soundz
I can't wait to see what happens there next....

Just took in the Donkey Show at the Oberon. Great fun. Short walk from Harvard Square. We spent the night dancing and partying. Waitress was great. Kept up with our orders even though we were a large group of 15.
