Recently saw Pretty Lights here and theres some things that need to be pointed out. The venue itself is really nice. Its open, theres lots of space so you dont feel too cramped, and the ambiance is similar to something you'd find out in California with palm trees and sand around the place. Â The organization getting into the door was a little confusing with two lines, neither of which were marked so you didn't really know where will call was or where people had to go if they already had tickets. Security was REALLY light getting in, which was surprising. Only after getting through the door did we realize that none of us were patted down- which is a plus if you want to bring a flask inside, but a negative if someone brings a gun inside...
The cost of the drinks were unbelievably high, with shots being $10 each (to their credit, they were strong) a vodka red bull was $14 and bud-light bottles were $6 (the most economic choice). By the end of the night we had spent about $90 on drinks alone, which is ridiculous considering it was $50 a ticket to get into the show. Â
The sound system is alright if you are right in the middle of the pit. Once you back out of the mass crowds of people (like we did later in the night) it gets a little muddled and hard to hear. I think this has something to do with the massive open space, but its unfortunate. Maybe putting speakers all around the venue, instead of just by the main stage would help this problem.
To quickly comment on the people that go to this place, I would second most of what everyone on here has said. Although, there were LESS jersey shore wanna-bes than I was expecting. Because the venue is so spacious, you can walk away from people if you wanted to. One thing that I did find was the crowd got very rude by the middle of the show. People were throwing elbows and walking through the crowd like there was no one there. I actually think I was holding 2 people up at one point, as if I doubled as a wall for them to lean against. So that was annoying (especially being 5'3....) Eventually we had to leave the large crowd to save from getting any more bruises, and decided to leave the show early.
All in all, the night was fun, Im glad I went, but would I do it again? Only if an incredible act back on tour for one time only was coming through....other than that, I think I've gotten my fill of the Ocean Club.
If we're comparing this place to clubs in other cities, then it's mediocre at best. Â However it is one of the best clubs in Boston and it has greatly improved the electronic music scene up here. Â Obviously the drinks are expensive so it doesn't factor in to this review.
The Good: Â
Outside and on the ocean
Has been getting some well known DJs to come through
21+ events
Decent light set up
Miami/Vegas feel to it
The Bad:
The sound system is NEED A LOT OF WORK. Â Yes, if you're upfront the music is good but it gets exponentially worse the further you move back. Â It needs more powerful speakers in the back to make up for lack of acoustics since it is outside.
Location. Â There is no easy public transit route without taking a taxi
1PM closing. Â This is probably more of a Quincy thing than OC.
For this type of venue, the show prices are ridiculous ($70 for Armin? laughable). But it is the second best option behind Royale
BEWARE: I've heard of stories where the headlining DJs play less than an hour and then leave.
Conclusion:
I would say Royale has a better club/rave feel as well as a better sound system than OC. Â OC definitely is unique and changes it up a bit and may be the only venue some of these DJs will play in the Boston area this year. Â If management could put a little more money into upgrades then this place could be excellent.
Also get rid of the fucking palm trees...we're in new england. Â You're not fooling anyone
Good:
-They seem to land some great DJs.
-Security folks were very courteous, which is a nice change from most places.
Neutral:
-It's an outside venue, which I like, but I can see that not being everyone's cup o' tea.
-The soundsystem isn't bad, no complaints there.
Bad:
-This place is SUCH a dudebro fest. To be fair, I probably brought it upon myself for going to see a DJ that falls under the realm of dubstep. I didn't know that such stereotypical bros existed in real life, complete with fake tanner, gel, and lots of bro hugs. Hilarious, but not really my type of scene.
-These damn kids and their iPhones at concerts. Why are you texting at a concert? Lame. Put your phone away and dance.
-The sand all over the place. Maybe this isn't so bad when the weather is good, but I went on a rainy night and by the end of things, my shoes and pants were covered in mud. Forget going anywhere post club, I looked ridiculous.
Despite hearing mixed things, I went to see two shows here over the summer - Avicii & Benny Benassi. I actually had a great time. Yes, going to this venue is like stepping into bizarro world (because we're not in Miami. So the palm trees and fake sand throw you off) but who cares? It's different, and being outside in the summer is pretty cool. They also have some pretty good DJ's come through.
Just be prepared to leave completely covered in whatever the sand is made out of. Like, filthy. I have to go stand in the shower for 20 minutes just to wash my legs and feet off.
We. Love. This. Club!
Huge venue, amazing sound system, and some of the best DJs in the world come here, and there's a reason why.
When you come here, get ready for an amazing night. Â Sexy dance girls and great beats will get you going all night long! Â Bartenders are extremely nice and know how to mix your drinks! Â I've been to some other clubs in the Boston area and this one is my favorite!
I highly recommend you check this place out!!!
I like this place for what it is. Its an outdoor club that attracts all walks of like aka my entertainment. The drinks (Belve/Ciroc) are $11-$12 a pop so I encourage you to pregame. Im not sure what their pour is but its definitely not 1 1/4oz (which is what I am used to). For those of you saying huh? Im saying the drinks are weak.
I encourage you to (only) buy shots when your there. Just keep drinking and keep dancing.
The median age of the crowd (at night) appeared to be 22 and there is nothing wacker than seeing everyone drinking beer out of a bottle. I get it, they dont serve in glass, but 4 the record its crazy to charge $20+ to get in and then once youre in its a trailer park. Seriously, ppl were still wearing Ed Hardy and wearing sunglasses at night. Who does that? Losers do.
Also in the event that managment reads this review, please hire someone to go through the dancefloor and pick up empty cups and bottles thrown on ground throught out the night.
Haha. Â This was definitely an experience. Â The premise sounds promising enough -- multiple dance floors; large, open spaces; nice view of the marina. Â The venue is great. Â But the crowd.... people from all walks of life were there. Â I'm all for diversity, but it felt like a human zoo with all the interesting-looking people... and I don't mean interesting in a good way. Â =
Review Source:This place is trash. Â They try to hide it by decorating it with fancy things, but don't let it fool you. Â By the end of the night, my white shirt was orange from all of the fake tans rubbing up against me. Â I honestly thought 'The Situation' was gonna pop up at some point. Â This place is polluted with so much Guido trash - its disgusting...
Not to mention the commute, the RIDICULOUS cover charge, and the grimy looking female prospects lurking around don't make me want to go back anytime soon either.
Honestly, don't waist your time or money on this place. BUT if you do decide to go AGAINST your better judgement, don't wear your favorite white shirt.... I'm not kidding.
This place reeks of spray tans, fist pumps and sadness. If jersey shore is your scene, you will love the collection of dumb, drunk (orange) white women for everyone.
Also, if you feel that overpaying for crappy beer makes you classy, this place will make you the most interesting man in the world (sadly, i would have killed for a XX)
Unfortunately, when I went to see Skrillex, they had awful house dj's open. "Dubstep"and top 40 don't belong on the same bill(arguable, i know).
All of this could have been ignored.
But then the sound system was just tragic.
I was easily able to hold a conversation at a normal volume during the headliner...
Less than 50 feet from the main stacks.
The breaks should take my breath away during this show; The soundsystem appeared to have no sub woofer, no punch in the chest.
Tell you what, don't book real headliners at this venue. Stick to booking shitty house. Your average customer will pump fist, get drunk, and spend their money regardless.
And then normal people can catch good shows at venues that don't suck.
4.5 stars now and could be five with a few changes.
This place is the best thing to happen to Boston clublife since I have entered the city. Finally an outdoor club which is only really useful for about 5-6 months during the year. Â Drinks are good and strong. Â The views of the marina add a great touch to the club scene. The place and secured some great names to play on Sunday's (Calvin Harris, Avicii, Dirty South, and more). And the servers are incredibly hott and also friendly. Â
The layout and design of the place deserve praise in and of itself. Â Huge tent bar. Â A second bar next to stage. Â A ton of cabanas surrounding the perimeter and tables at the stage. Â Reflecting pools, volleyball and basketball court. Â And the place is big enough where you can get away from the speakers if you want some quiet. Finally, a giant stage with a towering DJ booth and great sound system.
The few downsides I noticed are the lighting on stage could be a little better and I wish there were more bouncers by the stage during shows. Â It really sucks when little shitheads are crawling up on your couches and table to try to get on stage. Lastly, does this place need to be all the way out in Quincy? Â
I know I just wrote a review about a tribute to Rumor on my tombstone but now I am deciding that when my partying habits ultimately result in my demise, I would like a vodka redbull mixed into my urn and then have my ashes (plus the vodka redbull) scattered into the ocean next to Ocean Club.
Marina Bay bars have some interesteing crowds. Have only been here once or twice, but seems it's a meathead spot with fights every night. THe drinks are pricey adn not great, location is the only thing it has going for it. Tries to be a techno club/not sure..... But still, if you're looking for a few oceanside drinks - it's a decent spot.
Review Source:It's as Jersey Shore as Boston can get. My friends and I spent thousands (yes thousands) for VIP service. You pay for the cabana, the bottle service, tips for the waitress, etc. We parked at the complete back of the parking lot as it was pretty crowded. The one thing the cabana gets you is not having to pay a cover, so we got in the VIP line and inside. Once inside, no one had any idea what was going on, where we were supposed to go, which list we were on, etc. Finally after 20 minutes, they led us to the cabana. The cabana was away from everything. You had to travel across volleyball courts to get to any dance floor. I didn't feel comfortable leaving the cabana with all the booze and food if the waitress wasn't there and she was often away. Good thing I didn't leave because up walk a group of guys who claimed this was their cabana. The waitress then said that they double booked the cabana and that there weren't any others available. Let me repeat we spent thousands of dollars for the cabana. Luckily we were understanding since we were a group of girls and they were a group of guys, and said it would be ok to share. The more the merrier right?! Â Still we had to go back and forth with the waitress and the manager for an hour or so, which wasted part of our night. I felt I couldn't leave the cabana at all, at the risk of coming back and finding even more people in it. Â When I suggested that we split the cost of the cabana, we were informed that would not be possible!!!!! Â we were doing them a favor. the guys also never ordered the mandatory bottle service required of the cabana and disappeared before the bill came. There are nicer, closer places for me to spend my money. I won't be going back. Word to the wise, if you do go, against better advice, leave before the club closes because we waited in a 45 min traffic jam to leave.
Review Source:i'm not going to lie and say i didn't have fun here. Â i was here for a friend's birthday, so of course i had a good time. Â this place was unlike anything i've ever seen. Â cabanas, beach volleyball court, large bar, etc etc. Â dance floor was bumpin.... techno (i actually witnessed a girl sliding up and down a random pole near the dance floor to a techno remix of smells like teen spirit, pretty sure kurt cobain rolled in his grave haha)
THAT SAID, i'm also not going to pretend to ever understand being so close to the city (i actually had to LEAVE cambridge) to go to a club you have to DRIVE to, with a $20-40 cover on top of that. Â i'm never going to understand that ever.
you will probably like this place if you are from jersey, european (you can smoke anywhere inside) or like things like "vip tables" and other things i also don't understand.
If you are into big clubs with a lot of people, then this might be the place for your. Â My russian friend, Jelly, and I frequented this establishment every other weekend of the summer. Â The DJs usually did a great job, playing mostly mashups and top 40, but sometimes some older stuff. Â There were always tons of beautiful girls here too and they generally were not smug to a clown like me. Â Great place to go with a group or even just a few friends.
There were 5 different bars, so you never really had to wait THAT long for a drink. Â Also they were always staffed with many girls working as waitresses, so if you were smart you might get a drink that way. Â There was also an indoor danceclub with its own bar and own dj, but really the outside dance area was where it was at. Â Girls were allowed to go on the stage and dance all they wanted, and generally everyone just had a great time. Around 9 or 10 at night, Professional dancers were always on the top level of the stage performing, and they were always impressive, and it added a nice element to the atmosphere.
During the day, the dance area was a half basketball court. Â This was cool. Â There were also ping pong tables, and a full beach volleyball court, where a tournament was held this summer. Â Also they had various things throughout the summer such as bikini contests etc. Â those were fun and people had a great time.
I never really got their food much, but when I did I got the pizza. Â it was huge. Â $5 for one "slice" was actually more the size of 2 slices. Â Good deal and it tasted good. Â The standard price for a beer was $5 if I recall correctly, maybe $6 for some other beers. Â A mixed drink was around $12, and anything with redbull added was an extra 2. Â This is a little pricey from the local places I frequent, but I do not think it was too out of line. Â The bartenders were always good, and I do not have any complaints about them.
Now onto the issue of the cover charge- which deters a lot of people. Â The cover started at $20, and it started around 8pm, but I do not think always at the same time, sometimes perhaps at 9pm. Â It then went up to $30 and I think 40. Â This might have been a demand kind of thing, if more people were coming they figured they could charge more, I honetly dont know, I usually got there early to beat a cover and the most I ever had to pay was $30. Â They need to have a standard cover, or follow some sort of procedure based on the time of night I think.
I cannot comment on VIP services as I only made my way into the cabanas twice briefly , and it was just people I met/ or Jelly knew. Â (Umass Amherst legend @jelly1986 look him up)
Pros-
-big club like atmosphere
-DJs put on a good show
-tons of girls
Cons-
-Cover charge is pricey
-Drinks were a little pricey
-not many tvs so this wasnt the place to watch a game or anything
-if the weather was bad, then this WASNT the place to go
In conclusion if you are into the big club scene, this was a fun place.  (at the time of this writing it is closed until next season) I am not big into the club scene, so  icannot compare it to others (yet), but this was a good establishment. Â
The cover charge was pricey, the drinks were pricey, but you go here knowing you are going to spend money. Â Be it the day, or night I almost always had a good time here, and I cant wait to go back next season.
Having never been to Waterworks or the Marina Beach Club, I may have been slightly disillusioned somewhere between perusing the Ocean Club's website and reminiscing about Eric Nies at  MTV's Beach House.
SInce I live a stone's throw away, in the Ashmont area- I was really hoping that this was going to be the type of place I'd want to frequent every weekend that I was stuck in the area.
The Friday after the Ocean Club's grand opening I dragged my beau there along with another couple that were visiting the city for weekend. Initially, the $20 cover was not a shocker, but once inside I began to wonder exactly what I had paid a cover charge for. We arrived hungry and the light seaside fare that I had been expecting equated to a concession stand staffed w/ a barely attentive waitstaff. With the $20 cover charge I was less than thrilled when my glass of wine arrived in a disposable plastic cup and the mojitos my friends ordered barely resembled the tall icy glasses depicted in the huge banners overhead. Our food ended up arriving before my man even got his drink. So at that point I was forced to interrupt the group of white terry clad PYT's for the omitted beverage.
I do think the Ocean Club is a great concept; its just poorly executed. If the website is going to promote a luxe resort-like atmosphere then the OC needs to step it up and provide a higher quality experience.
I actually had a really good time here, but it could be the company.
We went early...even though it may sound loser-ish...I'm really glad we did. I really do not like to pay a cover anywhere, so I did not mind going early. Plus, it was a really pretty view as the sun was going down (yes, I was there THAT early) and enjoyed it without lots of people around. My friends actually got there after the cut off..but they still didn't have to pay..which was awesome.
The bartenders and waitresses were really nice...more friendly than I am used to. My friend said they're trying to improve their image. Either way, nice change.
I like the variety of things to do there...In one night we covered every corner of the place, so for the hours we were there, I was never bored, and time went by quick. One section is more casual, another more loungey with a pool table, then there are the sand volleyball court, cabanas, bar, and dance floor.
Great place for some dancing, especially during the summer nights. Â It's always nice to be able to dance in open air so your not dripping with sweat. Â Thank goodness we got there before 9:00 so we didn't have to pay the insane cover charge. Â I'm from CA where you always have to pay to get in to places like this, especially in Hollywood, but never more than $20. Â As far as the crowd...let's just say it got the stars for the venue and not for the people.
Review Source:One of my girls said we had to go and so we did. Â I had been to Waterworks and it was never my scene so I was hesitant. Â Drive to Quincy? Â Well, drive we did and it seemed like an eternity after having dinner in the South End. Â How can 10 miles take so long?
It was busy when we got there and there was a line so we waited with a very sketchy crowd. Â Lots of Affliction and muscles. Â Maybe that's just Boston and I need to get use to it. Â (But honestly there were a lot of shady looking people here.)
One of my girlfriends is a little overweight but still attractive and I could see the doorman giving her the once over as if she shouldn't be allowed in. Â I almost lost it - did he even notice the cheesy girls inside. Â It cost us $30 each to get in! Â 5 girls - $150 . Â Crazy. Â
Once inside it looked pretty much the way I remembered the old place but that was a while ago. Â The water fountains inside did remind me of my italian grandfathers yard though - that was nice. Â
The weather was perfect and we danced a little until we couldn't take the crowd any longer. Â Back to Boston and what I will call a safer crowd.
Overall, it just wasn't for me. Â Sorry, it's still Quincy meets Revere Beach - big hair, muscles and bad clothes.
Welcome to the Ocean Club at Marina Bay... Aka Waterworks... Aka Marina Beach Club...
Ok so here it is, if you have been to Waterworks don't expect anything different but a fresh coat of paint and some new cabanas. Beware, I called before we left and they said the cover was $30, by the time we got to the front of the line the cover was $40. It was worth it but I don't appreciate the dishonesty and greed. What was not worth it was the VIP passes (gets you no line, no cover for the Summer with a guest) which used to cost $150 when it was Waterworks but now costs $500 and doesn't get you anything extra!
As long as the weather is nice this spot still brings a great crowd. The drinks were strong and expensive. This place has great music and if you are looking for a great place to go on a Sunday night in the Summer this place can't be beat. I would compare this place to going to Vegas in the sense that you definitely have to pay to play. Don't come here if you are expecting a cheap night out. Be ready to bring your wallet. But hey if you want to have some fun on a random Sunday night this is the place.
