so, I came here on a Sunday night.  ALL by myself.  I wanted to see what was going in Lowell. What I learned was. . .NOTHING! place is pretty much dead. . .on a Sunday.  I was the out of Towner, looking for something to do! As I walked in there was the awesome bartender and 3 other guys.  I walk to the bar and order my usual, crown and coke.  I had a small conversation with the bartender.  He was very informative.  As, the night grew on, others came in for a drink or two.  The place had abt 15 ppl.
I felt out of place, due to how I was dressed.  I've learned MA ppl don't dress up @ all when they go out.  So my dressing down was a sundress and flats.
Choppin' it up with the locals, the night began to happen.  Everyone was really friendly.
Lowell, MA downtown is very quaint and small. . .ohhh and the cobblestone roads, blahhh.
Other than that, I actually had a blast!

oh yahhh very cheap drinks! my crown and coke was $7! :)

Reasonable prices and not a bad hangout.  You could definitely do worse.

One of my favorite places to frequent when I choose to go out in downtown Lowell.

Very friendly staff and efficient, quick service.  Typical mixed drinks are $5, which is a good deal when you compare to Boston pricing; the drinks are deceptive as the glass appears small, but there is still a very satisfactory amount of alcohol.  I'm never disappointed!

On weekend nights it can pack a full crowd, but this is one place where I absolutely never feel unsafe; the patrons vary from college kids to mid-30s and middle class, which contrasts from many of the other local bars who attract a seedier crowd.  Bouncers and staff are friendly, but firm and so the atmosphere is also one that is pleasant, positive, and safe!

I've eaten here many times and their pub food is above average; tasty sandwiches, yummy fish specials, and some of the best chili around!  They have some Irish fare as well, and I used to obsess over their shepherd's pie, however, they must have changed cooks, because now it's prepared differently and I prefer the older version.  Older version had lots a caramelized onion gravy that was out of this world scrumptious, but the new version is blander and the onions seem to be entirely gone from the recipe.  The brown bread that accompanies the pie is fresh and delicious, though!  Crispy onion rings are also a great nibble.

Trivia on Tuesdays packs a crowd and is a fun night out with a group of friends or family!

    Nightlife Review.

The Old Court is a very casual bar located in the heart of Downtown Lowell. It's within walking distance of other bars if you're ever feeling like a pub crawl.

They have a good selection of craft beers and legacy beers, and have a surprising array of liquors as well (you know it's fancy when they carry Hendrick's craft gin). The portions for mixed drinks are a little small compared to what I'm used to though. It's served in a wine glass or snifter instead of the traditional highball or hurricane. Or maybe it's just me.

I do have a slight problem with the size of the bar (lengthwise) though. It's really hard to squeeze in an order if you came at a busy time. During peak hours, it's pretty much standing room only. Best buy your drinks in rounds or two at a time.

I would dare say this is a Lowell resident's bar of choice for casual drinking since you're very likely to bump into a familiar face or two. I think it's only true up to a certain age, let's say 35. Everyone here seems like they grew up in Lowell, went to Lowell High, and then moved on to UML. Not that it's a bad thing, of course.

A great bar to start off your evening downtown. My friends and I like to pop in here for a few inexpensive drinks, some light banter, and enjoying eachother's company without having to worry about shooing away unwanted dance partners. The bartenders are friendly, and it definitely has a nice low-key pub feel to it. It's really fun during Folk Festival time too, so make sure you pop in next year!  My friends and I enjoyed an awesome live band, and TOC even set up a tent so people could enjoy the music while it was raining. All and all, ya done good Old Court.

Magners, Crabby's, Irish Bartenders and owners, best trivia guy in town on Tuesdays, and seriously I'll take that Reuben to the face with a punch if I had to and say Thank You Sir May I Have Another.

Oh, and there's a Monty Python style photograph on the wall that I took. That makes me super chuffed!

Kinda psyched to be Duchess now that I think on that fact. Woot!

This is my go-to place whenever I'm stuck in Lowell and need a solid lunch.  It's a pretty standard Irish pub in downtown Lowell,  although the big windows make the place nice and bright during the day.  The menu is also standard pub food, but the ingredients are fresh and the portions very good sized for the price.  On my last trip, I had the corned beef Reuben, meat was very well cooked (not dried out) and the sandwich itself was delicious.  The fries were very good too, I'm guessing they make them on site.
I ate at the bar and got excellent service, which isn't too much of a surprise given that there were only three people in the place.  Such as it is when you eat lunch at three o'clock in the afternoon.

It's a good solid lunch at a decent price in a more-pleasant-than-you'd-expect setting.  A good choice in DTL.

If you're hungry and looking for a challenge I recommend the Rebel burger, 1/2 lb burger with corned beef, cheddar cheese and an egg

Whenever I'm back home, I usually like to suggest the Old Court as a meeting place for several reasons: during the week, it's an excellent happy hour spot, reasonably priced drinks, and centrally located.  The bar definitely has some charm to it, and I generally enjoy it.  During the weekends, it can be a different story -- it's a pretty popular bar and can get pretty crowded -- they usually have a band playing upstairs.

I try to stay out of Lowell, but when I have to go, this is the place. Food is great, service is friendly, and by far the best pint in town.

The Old Court is an expert Fish and Chippery complemented by a nice lovely pint of well poured Guinness. That's all I need to give a place five stars. I've been a few times now just for the FnC but I've also dabbled in the bangers and mash, shepherds pie, and cheeseburger. I have to say for local pub grub you can't do better. It's got the just greasy enough, but not too heavy feel in all the foods that they make. The beer selection is good enough and the daytime atmosphere is actually pretty nice. I've said it before and I swear it will be on my tombstone; if you can do simple food in a great way it's way better than complicated food in a bad way. The Old Court delivers delicious simplicity.

P.S. I can't really speak to the nightlife at this place any more as I am over 30 and not to be trusted, or so the young 'uns tell me.

With a Rebel Burger they top it with more, more, more...  Wow.  It's been mentioned by others, below, but a burger stacked with bacon *and* corned beef *and* an egg...  is delicious!  The bacon was cooked perfectly, too, which is rare.  Nice and crispy.  The burger was a little overdone for the medium I asked for, but it was still juicy.  The rest of the plate was covered with a massive helping of fries, which were pretty good.  $8.99 for that?  You can't beat it.  I'll be substituting for onion rings, next time, though.  Obviously fresh and homemade, the onion rings were crunchy and juicy and piping hot.  The haddock was also fresh and perfectly fried.

The atmosphere was great for around 7 on a weeknight.  I can see how it would get packed fast on Fridays and Saturdays, but if you're doing dinner during the week it should be no problem.  Lots of wood on the walls give it a real cozy feel, and the Irish memorabilia isn't too overdone.  (I'm rarely a big fan of walls with a million pieces of bric a brac on them.)

I could see myself going in for a Guinness or a blacksmith, if I was in the mood, too.

So yeah.  Inexpensive, tasty, easy to get to...  I'll be back!

I have never been a huge fan of their mixed drinks, they are always watered down, but I have heard good things about their food. The food was excellent, however Bria was the most god awful server I have ever had at any establishment. We came in and sat down, ordered drinks, and we then had to flag her down after 15 minutes to order new drinks and food. Our food came out, not served by her, and I had to again have her flagged down because I did not get my tartar sauce for my haddock. We continued eating where she never came back to the table to ask how anything was, and after a half hour AFTER we finished eating she came to ask if we wanted more drinks. The food I have to say was excellent, but I absolutely after tonight will never spend another dime at this place unless they actually hire servers who can do their job. I am pretty sure I saw Bria in the 3 hours I was there smoke more cigarettes than she had customers. Do your job thanks.

I also would like to add that MONTHS after I left this review the waitress email to ask me to change it. Unfortuntely the point of Yelp is to review the service that a particular person had, and my was awful. I have since gone back a couple times and she was more responsive, however I admit I didn't even want to give her a chance after the awful experience I had previously

Are you from a town around Lowell?  Want to see a bunch of people you graduated HS with that you aren't and were never friends with?  Take a trip to the Old Court!

On the bright side, it is your average run of the mill bar with a decent atmosphere, good prices, and the occasional rock show upstairs.  Their pub food is just like pub food everywhere else... very pub-foody (ie. good when you are drinking, less good when you only had a few, and just regular when you haven't had any drinks).  In all fairness, they do have a couple burgers that are pretty damn good and original.

I want to love this place...so I am biased - in a good way. I wish the staff were friendlier and I wish the crowd was as well, but every single time I am there, it's got a kind of stand-offishness to it that I can't quite place. This place could be a lot more fun, just needs personality tweak...not much mind you and it could be easily a 4 in my book

    Love this place...

They have a pretty good beer selection, and the service was good. On Fridays there is usually a live singer/band which is a good time. I also love that there a mixed crowd all the time...obviously you have your college kids, but everyone from 21-75 hangs out at the Old Court.

Food was alright, nothing I am dying to have again, as it's just standard pub fare, but it filled the void.

Most people don't realize they serve food there during the day and it is awesome pub food! The serve up the best fish and chips around and their burgers (though not thick) have this amazing smokey flavor that keeps me going back there.

I suppose my one experience in here makes me a bit biased, but that's too damn bad.

I went here during Lowell's winterfest hoping to grab a drink with a few UML friends.
When we got in, it was so crowded I could barely move.
Just trying to get a drink took over half an hour, and it only took that short amount of time because I gave up and told my friends I was leaving. We quickly found somewhere else to go.

The band playing was not very good and too loud for me to make the least bit of conversation.

The bar was small, thats all i have to go by, and cannot comment on the drinks.

Maybe I'll try this spot again some day but not without being dragged in by a lady friend.

When I'm home in Chelmsford and want to see people from high school, Lowell it is. Seems as though the bars downtown are CHS alum's old stomping grounds.
Came in on Saturday night to catch up with a friend. We were greeted by a friendly waitress asking if we were in for dinner or drinks.
We headed to the bar where we were waited on right away. When my friend was told they don't have Stella we asked what else was light and on draft. The response was "Miller Light" with a scoff. Guess that's what you get for asking an Irishman for a light beer.
We sat at a high top in the bar where we had to flag down a waitress. Once she knew we wanted to order from her the rest of the night she was good about keeping the drinks coming.
This part of Lowell is almost like a mini-Allston, a bar on every corner, and IMO Old Court is one of the better choices.
    Cheers!

Cozy Irish bar. They pour an excellent Guinness, and have a resident fish named Seamus.

Surprisingly good food for a bar. The food is traditional Irish comfort food (as far as I know) and their sweet potato fries are excellent. The fries are the "skinny" type, and have been perfectly cooked every time I've ordered them.

I spent a lot of time in this area, and this was one of the only bars that I never had to deal with any trouble-drunken harassment, fights outside, etc. They usually have a band playing on weekend evenings, and it definitely gets a bit loud then. Otherwise, it's nice for a quiet evening out with friends.

Most definitely an authentic Irish pub atmosphere and decorations. Having been to the real thing I know.

I was there with friends for a pre-Memorial Aud. food & drinks. Very good Irish, etc. draft beer selection. Decent pub fare apps & entrees.

Best place for a Guinness in town. Supposedly high turnover makes it the freshest. Plus it's served really cold, the way I like it. Other's dont', so let it sit for awhile. Food is so-so, but the Trivia Night on tuesday is a rockin party! It fills up early, so get ther at around 7:45 to secure a table. It's tiny, so it usually feels packed even when there's only a few people in there. Huge bay windows open up to let in the summer breeze.

This time when I went to the old court I got in! Since it was 9.30 and not the end of the night, the doormen were not yet 100% ass-hats.

I went upstairs for an event, and made good use of the cash bar.  The drinks, pretty much being 5 bucks were ok.  The one bartender for the whole upstairs was a bit annoying.  He was fast, but I still border-lined ordering my drinks in 2 just so i wouldn't have to wait again.

I'd go back, but I wouldn't be wicked excited about it.  Kind of want to go here when it's warm out and they have all the windows open... could make the place pretty cool.

This bar is a big hangout for UMass Lowell kids.  In terms of decor and atmosphere, the Old Court is a very nice and cozy Irish bar.  I have enjoyed their food the several times I have eaten there, but I am always disappointed when I go there for drinks.  For what they are, their drinks are very overpriced.  The mixed drinks are tiny and very weak.  I would suggest ordering beer if you go here.  The Old Court would get much higher marks from me if it weren't for the overpriced drinks.

I first went here to see a show upstairs.  The music and atmosphere rocked.  Ever since Evos closed they have really taken up the helm as far as good music in Lowell is concerned.  I had a proper Guinness and some improper conversation :)

I returned for dinner some weeks later before seeing a play upstairs by a local theatre company.  Our server was nice.  My date got the fish and chips, which from the looks of it, we could have lived off  for two days.  It was either ridiculously delicious or he hadn't eaten for weeks prior.  I had steak tips which were juicy and succulent.  I tried sweet potato fries instead of mashed and was pleasantly suprised.

My only qualm was with the tea.  For an Irish place you would think they would do better than stale yuckies drawn from a wicker basket.  Perhaps it's a scheme to get unassuming customers to order more beer, because it works.  We saw this great show where local writers read their short stories upstairs.

The service is great, they have yummy comfort food, and they have stuff to do here!  I heard they did Trivia night on Tuesday, so look for me there!

Was back to the Old Court for lunch. Food was decent and straight forward (had a BLT) with a decent clam chowder. Didn't go for the pub grub on this visit....food was on par with the typical lunch counters/delis in the 'hood. Their down fall was the gross concoction they called iced tea. the same old bug a boo since my arrival in New England. As with the search for a decent taqueria, I continue the search for the elusive glass of decent ice tea!

My husband and I have been big fans of this place ever since we moved to Lowell 3 years ago. I always order the same thing - buffalo tenders on the Old Court salad. I NEVER order salad anywhere but I am obsessed with the sauce they use on the buffalo tenders. Also, their sweet potato fries are our favorite appetizer! Within the past year or so they've added to their tap selection which makes it that much more appealing to me because I'm pretty picky about my beer - of course I enjoy a delicious Guiness but they now have UFO  Hefeweizen and Magic Hat #9. The waitstaff has pretty much remained the same and they are AWESOME! I love that it's a small Irish pub but they have TVs, a dartboard and a jukebox with tons of good tunes!

I'm a fan of this bar because whenever I have gone I meet boys who buy me drinks :)...hey, I'm just being honest here people. I knew this place was special from the first time I went wearing crappy jeans and snow boots, my friend was in sneakers and a fleece and we still had the hottest guys at the bar talking to us. I've met some interesting charaters here....most are very nice. The service is great, the bartenders are so nice. The bouncers are pretty cool too, they don't hastle you at all. There is nothing pretentious about this bar. Plus...everything is waaaay cheaper than Boston which is always nice.

Great little Irish pub.  Some of the staff and customers are authentic Irish, pours a great pint, etc.  Food is excellent, from the Rubens to the Stew to the Steak Tips.

Would be five stars but the kitchen closes early (8 o'clock I believe) and the atmosphere is unpredicatable.  It ranges from old people to a frat croud seemingly at random.

a fun little irish pub in downtown lowell. The place is small, with all the irish gear on the walls, good drinks, very friendly staff, nice crowd. It's a great place to relax over a beer, with friends or just to hang out with the regulars.
