Stopped in here for a late Saturday afternoon lunch. Â The bar/dining room area looks exactly as the name describes - Old Irish Alehouse!
The beer was cold, the food was your standard pub fare and the service from the bartender was good. Â There are plenty of TVs to catch whatever game you are looking for while enjoying your favorite beverage. Â These all add up to exactly what I am looking for when I go to an Irish pub.
I am always excited when I see an Irish themed restaurant. My friend and I had actually just pulled off the highway due to traffic when he spotted the Alehouse. It didn't look busy so we had to stop and sample some of their fare.
The menu had a lot of great items. The prices were also nice. We ended up getting the Irish stew and the boiled dinner. The barman was waiting the tables and took our orders. The food came with the most delicious Irish soda bread- warmed up and very fresh. We also got a bowl of soup; I tried the corn chowder and it was so good! Our meals were okay. My boiled dinner had no taste to it. You could tell it wasn't cooked all together like the usual boiled dinner. My friend's Irish stew was so good. We ended up switching!
A couple of bad points. The barman/waiter never returned to re-fill our waters or ask how we liked it. He dropped off the bill near the end and never returned so we had to flag down a waitress to finally get someone to take it. Â The bathrooms were gross. Grimy and just looked like they hadn't been cleaned in forever.
I'd stop by again, but I wouldn't go out of my way since I don't live particularly close. There were several other items that looked tempting on the menu.
Food is A-OK. Typical bar food with nothing too special. I ordered a reuben and it was very good. We got the nacho's for an appetizer and it was HUGEEEEEE, we had plenty to take home. Prices were reasonable and overall you got a lot for your money.
Decor needs some updating, tables are older/beat up. One downfall is that one of the areas where the tables are is an enclosed addition to the building and therefore is very cold in the winter time.
Made the trip with some fellas for Thursday night sports trivia.
This place seems way too big. Given the product they produce, I could never image this place ever reaching even 75% capacity. Anywho, the trivia was fun, the staff was friendly and the beer towers flowed throughout the night. However, I intended on watching the Bruins during trivia breaks, but the lone 12" fuzzy screen TV in my line of view kinda killed the desire.
I ordered the rachel sandwich with fries. The sadwich was good and the fries were your standard, dull fries. One person ordered the steak and cheese and liked it. Everyone else ordered the BBQ steak stips. Nobody finished them and nobody agreed with the spices they  used.
The trivia is worth the trip. Some beer and apps to fill the gaps makes for a decent night in Dedham.
We go here for Sports Trivia on Thursdays with the Sauce. Great local place where the bartenders will talk to you about all things bartenders will talk to you about: sports, books, the old country, etc. I also watched most of the Bruins playoff run here and there was an awesome atmosphere for a suburban bar.
You don't go here for the food. There are endless better choices within a 2 mile radius of this place. Though it's your own fault if you're trying to eat dinner at a dive bar in my estimation. Go here for cheap drinks, mellow atmosphere, and meeting of locals.
Grumpy owner, beat up bar area, slightly colder inside than out (35 F outside) with a very unhappy looking cast of characters hanging out drinking. Every see the movie the Friends of Eddie Coyle? The Old Irish Alehouse would have been perfect the bar part of the movie. Â The upside is that unlike many Irish bars they are not cheap with the whiskey, the bartenders are efficient and you can drink in peace. So if you are on the slightly antisocial side, want relatively cheap drinks in a no nonsense setting this is your place, otherwise steer clear.
Review Source:I went to this place on a Friday night. Â We sat at the bar and ordered some food and some beers and watched the bruin's game. Â
I got the fish and chips which I thought were pretty good. Â My friend got one of the pasta specials which had a very good melt in your mouth sausage. Â But the pasta was over cooked. Â
Overall I thought it was a good experience and I will be coming back. Â
I would like to add that I hate their parking lot. Â It is very hard to navigate in my opinion
This is a great pub, real Irish guy owns and runs it, the food is pretty good, sometimes it's great, I've never been there and had someone in my group say that they had bad food. the bar staff can pour a decent pint, the prices are fair. The place could use some updating. I like the authentic look, but there are some spots where you can plainly see small cracks in the plaster or the woodwork. They've been having more live music in the past year, and there's a rockabilly band that plays there once a month that really rocks the joint. They don't charge a cover and there's plenty of free parking so it's a great place to go and dance, but call first to make sure they're having live music. Ask if that awesome rockabilly band with the handsome lead singer is playing.
Review Source:I am very torn on this place. On one hand, it's an excellent location, and as an Irish guy, I have a sore spot for bangers and mash/corn beef and cabbage. Same is the case with typical pub food. I also enjoy the little view of that river you can get from some seats. But, the food is very average, and the inside isn't really anything to write home about. I also agree with others here, that the inside and regular crowd do fit the damp and dreary category. I'll say 4.5/10.
Review Source:Great place been there many times the owners a great guy ,food is standard pub food but great corned beef and cabbage on ST PATRICKS day . The burgers are really good. Good selection of beer and it has a great view of the Charles I go mostly to watch games and they have many flat screen tv's . Love this place truly a gem ,catch some of the bands really good Irish and Rocka billy .Plenty of parking Great bartenders and the wait staff are excellent .
Review Source:To those who would complain about the food of the Old Irish Ale House: what on earth did you expect, really? You didn't sit down in a dusty Irish pub and think you were at El Bulli, did you? I love the Ale House, but I'd never eat there without a 'script of penicillin and pedialyte on-hand for the repercussions.
My recommendation is that you experience karaoke night on Wednesday and live drunken Irish ballad sing-along night on Friday and/or Saturday (the schedule seems to change regularly, without notice). These nights are truly and sincerely the best fun to be had in Dedham in the evening.
The bartenders are responsive and courteous once they get to know you, or if you're a hot female -- which is rare in the Ale House, a minefield teeming with sad-looking suburban goblins and plumpers. My friends and I often refer to it as the "Whale House." That said, there is plunder to be had there for those who have patience.
With its cheap whiskey, surly bar staff, angry regulars, and foul-mouthed owner, this is hands-down the best bar in the Dedham/West Rox area.
This neighborhood swill house earns its two stars by having an ace bartender/owner, who refills your drinks quickly. Â And it's a nice building, inside and out, right on the Charles (though it's a pretty ugly part of the River to be honest). Â
The food is not very good, but if you stick to simple items, like burgers, nachos & buffalo fingers, it's acceptable. Â On most nights it's somewhat deserted, and those that frequent it are an older, world-weary bunch, though not unfriendly or mean. Â
I'm not sure that middling Irish Folk music and trivia night do much to increase the occupancy. Â Perhaps if they improved the food, and catered the entertainment towards a younger, more lively demographic, the place could be more compelling.
It has a nice setup and you can get a nice seat over the water, but the food was subpar pub grub executed better pretty much...everywhere else.
I had a fish sandwich which tasted frozen and just ugh. Â
I also got a distinct "regulars" vibe here, like we weren't welcomed even though the place was practically empty on an early Friday evening.
I have been here twice now. I can't recall what I got the first time but this time around I got the Blarney Burger which was yummy! Â We happened to be there on Saturday and St. Patty's day celebrations had begun. Â
There was a good band playing and we got some Irish soda bread before our order came out. Â Everyone was in the mood for celebration and dancing. Â There was also a private event going on in the upstairs room, which is something to keep in mind as far as venues go.
The one downfall is the parking situation. Â We figured out that if we go around to the right and around the gas station it was a lot easier to get out rather than backing up and going out the same way as we entered. Â The cars feel as though they are on top of each other and I really feel like the whole sidewalk in front of the parking lot should be slanted so you could exit.
But as I said, the food was good!
We were tired & hungry and in the mood for a nice Irish bar with good pub food. Â With a name like "The Old Irish Alehouse" - how could it miss?
Our first clue should have been the empty bar and dining room at 6:30 on a Monday night. We both ordered the Reuben sandwich, assuming that an Irish pub would have good corned beef. Â The sandwiches arrived warm, not hot, and within minutes they were cold, along with fries that tasted like they were fried in last week's grease. Â The corned beef was sliced about a quarter inch thick and was fatty & stringy. Â The waitress stopped by once, and not again until I was out of beer and thirsty from the dry sandwich. Â I could not figure out how service could be so bad on a slow night, until we were on our way out and saw the staff all sitting near the bar with their Blackberries out, texting their friends. Â I assume they were all looking to meet somewhere after work for a couple of beers and a good sandwich. Â Obviously, this is not that place.
So mediocre it hurts. The servers are nice and the bartenders are all angry. Typical Irish Pub. The food was....Meh....I don't remember it. The beer was cold. No reason to really go back except St. Patrick's day maybe? The place was dirty and you can tell has been there forever, but I am sure a staple in the area.
Review Source:Pub food is hard to screw up, right? Â Not at this place.
Truly truly awful fake Irish pub. Â Went for dinner on a Friday night, and should have been tipped off by the fact that besides one other table, we were the only diners in the restaurant. Â
We were seated next to the bathroom, and the wafting toilet aromas served as a precursor to the crap we were about to be served. Â
Started with buffalo wings, which clearly came right out of a Costco bag. Â They were not deep fried, but rather warmed in an oven, resulting in a chewy, disgusting mess. Â Shepherds Pie bore virtually no resemblance to the classic British dish; instead it looked like baby vomit atop a pile of instant potatoes. Â My dining companion only got about 3 bites down. Â Burger likewise came from a bag of frozen patties, and the only cheese option was American. Â
This whole ordeal cost about $50 for two. Â Stay away!
I went here with my dad on a Sunday night. He remembered going here after college and when there was a line out the door... Well, there was one other table and a half dozen regulars at the bar. Our waiter said it was slow because of the day and because it's summer. I saw him eating the food too so it made me feel better.
We got to sit right on the river which was pretty but there was a big spider web near my chair. Yuck... It was overall dark and clean except for the spider web, like most Irish pubs.
My dad got the steak tips and a Guiness and I had nachos. Nachos ($10) are my favorite thing to order in Irish-American places because they make them the best. They were covered with fresh tomatoes, onions, scallions, olives, jalapenos, real cheese, etc. Some places will tack on extra fees for anything above cheese but this place was good. The sour cream and salsa were on the side so they didn't make the whole thing goopey. Â My dad got the steak tips ($15) which looked decent. He ate all of them but the plate seemed small to me for the price. They did sprinkle it with parsley so it looked pretty classy.
Our waiter was really nice and actually Irish. He forgot to put my dad's drink on the bill which we noticed after he had swiped the card. I think the waiter was also the bartender so when we tried to tell him, he said it was fine. We just left a bigger tip to make it even.
I hope this place gets better business in the winter because it was pretty good.
Old Irish Alehouse located on the corner of 107 and Route 1 on the Dedham/West Roxbury town line is a great place to meet friends for a drink after work. Especially Sundays and Wednesdays where Dan Maloof runs karaoke. He runs arguably the best karaoke business around. The place gets packed.
Irish Alehouse is average priced for drinks and food. They have a traditional bar menu. The burgers are good, pretty much standard like a Ground Round burger. The chicken fingers and french fries are simple but my favorite.
It can be a bit of a rough crowd on karaoke and band nights but overall a good place to hang.
Long live the Irish Alehouse, which closed on 11/14/2008 for not instaling fire sprinklers in time for the law to take place. They had 4 years to get it done. Let's hope they can get them installed and get the liquor license back.
I went here for a simple dinner for burgers and a beer after helping my friend run some errands up in this fun area. Â That's what we got. Â After some ghetto kids were "rough-housing" around his classic Mercedes and the cops were called (not by us) - we decided we needed a pit stop before going home (not for the car)...
We ended up here - The Old Irish Alehouse. Â Meh.
In my best Larry David voice, "pretty, pretty, prettttttyyyyy good" but not really anything more. Â The burgers at least were cooked the way we like them, so I can't complain about that. Â Well, I shouldn't be looking for things to complain about, so, anyway... Â Trivia night with about 7 people there and a good selection of beers and drinks. Â I guess it's got that name for a reason. Â Don't go expecting a great dinner.
