I really want to like this place, especially since im a local... But the few times I have gone it felt like spring break and immature. not only that but i had drinks spilled on me and once had a random guy puke on my car right outside at the front door. Id be mean.. But like i said, i keep wanting to like this place. Just a warning for a special event on a bust sat night if your a short female lol

Exactly what I want in a local bar... decently priced drinks with a strong selection and poured well!  Friendly staff, great location, and I always enjoy catching a game here, particularly during football season.

It does not hurt to have Silver Star directly next door so that I can grab food while having a drink as well. Definitely a plus!

One of my favorite bars ever!  I never come to HMB without popping in here for at least one drink.  Great crowd and the bartenders are always so friendly.

What a great hang out place, reasonable drinks and friendly folks.  Not to mention - they have great TVs and pool tables.  Live music most nights.  If you are looking for something low key, enjoyable and wont break your bank account here on the coast.  This is it.

This is my favorite place in the area. The prices aren't too bad, I LOVE the patio - it's big enough so that non-smokers can enjoy fresh air too without smokers blowing nastiness in your face. There's a sand pit where they have a fire pit at night with lots of picnic tables and it's right in the harbor area. Good for anytime, especially sports games.

When I want to reliably find decent live music on weekends I go next door to the Half Moon Bay Brewing Company; when I want to relax and chill, with the occasional gift of good live music as a bonus I choose this place. Comfortable, local kind of place with a great selection of reasonably priced beer, and a mixed group of  people drinking, watching a game on one of several large screen TVs, listening to music, playing pool, or just enjoying the company. On weekends it isn't plagued with periodic bouts of overdressed, wine swilling "slumming" visitors from the Oceano or the Ritz Carlton a bit further down the road, the way their next door neighbor the Half Moon Bay Brewing Company is. Hit or miss music bookings on Fridays and/or Saturdays -- gotta keep an eye on their calendar as they're all the heck over the place - coastal rock or blues, metal (much less than before thank you lord jesus -- I think they changed ownership again), DJ's. Silver Star Cafe next door (in the space that used to be occupied by Cafe Capistrano, now relocated to "downtown" Half Moon Bay) has a limited menu of tasty, reasonably priced bar grub.

    Recommended.

Any spacious bar that has friendly service and holds live all day Metal and Rap shows gets a perfect rating in my book. They also have 1 of my favorite beers on tap, Mirror Pond Ale, baby!!

I look forward to my every visit to the "OPL," and there's a good reason why: It always gets weird. First and foremost, this is a classic roadhouse, where you wouldn't be surprised to walk in and see the re-animated corpse of Zombie Swayze sliding some tweaker head-first down the bar, then shambling out to the large open-air patio with a bottle of Jack in hand. (We're talking a true-blue bar here.)

It isn't a fancy place, but don't get me wrong, it isn't a dive either. They've got great beers on tap, ranging recently from a nice double IPA to a rich nut brown ale and they're known to pour a mean drink. The clientele often extend the range from young coastside hipsters to grizzled old bikers, the aforementioned tweaker to surfers looking to come down from their most recent wave. It's really quite diverse, but then again, I find that to be a very good thing.

Brian, the new owner, strives to keep his ship at an even keel as it sails the never-ending sea of booze, escorting out miscreants and ensuring that his clientele are all well tended. (It's entertainment, to say the least.) Frequently you'll find a great local band or two on stage, and some national touring acts as well. Neil Young has graced the OPL stage, and I caught last year's Caustic Velocity show, which absolutely rocked. (Come on' back, guys!)

It's great to know that this classic coastside bar is in good hands. Thanks to Brian for keeping it going and in the right direction. I look forward to many more evenings - and Sunday morning Niner games on their three TVS - in my near future.

Inexpensive drinks, good beer on tap, friendly local crowd, places to sit, sweet bartenders, live band, easy parking...  Cheers!!!

    This place was funny.
My friends and I were looking for a new bar to try and as we pulled up to this area, the music sort of drew us in; today's hits, basically.
Due to our peripherals, once we walked in we all turned to our right. While doing this, we noticed some chick dancing drunkenly on the stage.
What I mean by drunkenly is: flipping her hair wildly while dancing on an invisible pole, while having sexual with the wall, while playing hide and seek with the window curtains. I lol'd.
So despite the horrible entertainment, the bartender was cool, there was a good amount of seating considering the amount of people in the bar, and the prices were great.
    LOVED THE BEER.

The look of this place reminds me of a roadside biker bar, with no bikers. PRO:
Was there when "Billy Bates" DJ was on stage and stayed there for the music and the Newcastle.  Drinks are strong.
Bartenders don't look happy with a busy bar, wish they had at least one pro-bartender to keep the social part in full swing.  Bartenders were still good and wouldn't complain except many people became sober waiting for their next drink.
The reunion class of "91" was in the house and honestly they were a big part of the draw for sticking around.

    CON:
    Too much "jail bate"

Scenario: Empty bar, mid-afternoon on a rainy weekday, group of 6 taking over the pool tables, jukebox blaring.

The place itself is 3 stars, because there's nothing much to it beyond your typical pub features: couple of pool tables, a mini-stage for live bands, a long bar and a few high tables scattered in the middle, a few television screens set to various sports channels, and a jukebox (pretty cool one at that, though). The bartender, however, upped the game: he was very nice and down to earth, not pushy but inviting, and just overall had really good vibes. After $10 spent on the jukebox, he actually put in $10 of his own to keep the music going, so that was a great perk. The beers were good and prices reasonable... definitely not happy hour steals, but decent $5-a-pop-ish. As the afternoon passed, the regulars started rolling in... one such man came in with his friendly dog, with whom we ended up playing ball, which was strangely entertaining until the beer daze wore off and I noticed the canine saliva all over my hand. Good times.

Overall, great pool bar to pass the time and have a few cold ones on a foggy day. I'd definitely come back often... if I didn't live 30 miles away.

    Good stuff, OPL.

What a difference new ownership can make.  When I first moved to El Granada and discovered the Old Princeton Landing (OPL) it was a mess.  A lot of shady stuff going on that unfortunately has stuck with the place's reputation even though it is such a different story now.  I encourage all of you to give the OPL a new chance.  I think you'll find the staff is about as cool as it gets.  The atmosphere is friendly, wild and fun but still classy, and it truly is the coastside's "Biggest Little Music House".  They feature locals to signed touring artists and host all kinds of quality events including community related fundraisers.  Next time your down at the HMB harbor stop on by and check it out.  The OPL is an awesome bar!

I'm laughing because I just read the first review I did of the "New PL"  (New Old Princeton Landing ) ;)  I would like to change it.

So since my previous review, I have been many many more times..... and I'm happy to say that my one and only complaint isn't an issue anymore.   And actually if I think back on it, it seemed to be only be the blasting music at a specific times with a specific bartender-  so maybe the couples times I experienced that-  it was because that was what they did at that time  :)

Anyway, I LOVE this place!  I am sooo happy about the new owner and what he is doing to the place.   Bryan is great, his staff is great.  The music has been great-  and hasn't been the bizarre overblasting that I experienced.  It's perfect.  I love loud music-  couple times it was just, hmm  :)

I love that there is live music & dancing here sometimes.....   I've been a couple times & it's been really fun.   I also go quite often with my family.  We play pool, have some yummy food from next door, and watch games.   It's fun night out-  great to have a late night fun place on the coast.

They have an awesome selection of beer.   Bryan is also bringing other fun events here.  And he's just a great guy.  Yay OPL!  :)   And, still liking the grill -  that was an awesome addition to team up with Pete & Paul to have food.

Look forward to playing more there.

Solid place on the coast to have a beer and watch the game. Hopefully they have drink specials going on for the Giants season. Clean and have a good selection of booze.  All the workers are nice and a couple of good looking girl bartenders that I tip a little more keep it up.

Good place to bring the kids if you don't like to wear shoes, Ma! Also, its dog friendly. Good place to go if you have trouble hearing, the music is plenty loud. Its the only place I know that has rich homeless bums... The drinks are expensive yet some pretty rough looking people are still hanging around drinking. Strange. Oie, to the cover charge collector, lose the haughty attitude, your gonna bitch slapped one of these days.

Old Princeton Landing is a solid four!
So I must admit I thought about this review long and hard (not a gay reference). I am a regular at The Half Moon Bay Brewery next door so I thought I'd try to put it into context.... The OPL has about a dozen beers on tap with a small selection of wine and a full bar. The HMB brewery has about the same number of taps, perhaps a bit better selection of vino and a full bar. I'm a beer guy so I love the micro beer thing offered by the HMB brewery but sometimes I like to also partake in the more mainstream beer options. Herein lies the OPL bar. They have Deschutes, Racer 5 IPA, Chimay red and Guinness on tap as well as some other solid brews by the bottle. If you desire some crap ass American lager like Coors, Miller or Bud read no further. You won't find that shit at HMB but you have options at OPL. As far as price is concerned, OPL wins over HMB. OPL offers $4 pints during happy hour while deals like this only happen at HMB two times a week.  OPL offers a small variety of "bar food" options from the place next door at reasonable prices but HMB definitely has far more in the way of selection. As far as ambience is concerned, HMB wins. The OPL is sort of like a big barn but they have the advantage of being more open in feel. Both places offer live music on the weekends. When I was there, OPL was charging a $12 cover for their next band while all bands at HMB brewery are free. HMB takes part of their bar area to make room for the band with a very small dance area while OPL has a stage and has more area to get your groove on. HMB is principally a restaurant while OPL is a bar (sort of a dive bar). That being said, the latter has billiards, pinball and a juke box while the former has none of those things. HMB has a bonus outside seating area with fire pits. The outdoor area of HMB is dog friendly.  OPL seems to have a resident dog named Maggie and while I was there others felt free to bring their dogs inside. Although OPL is much smaller than HMB, they have the same number of screens for your sports viewing. I haven't been to OPL on a weekend yet but I'm willing to bet this place would be a great flex option on such occasion if you're trying to avoid the beach crowd. In short, I'm likely to be splitting my future costal bar time between OPL and HMB.....
