This is a place I wanted to love. But despite the very true claim, as I see it, that Old Town has the best pizza in town, the service and general disorganization of their operation makes Old Town Pizzeria a difficult place to like.
I called on a weekday at lunchtime, about 30 minutes before noon. The fact that I got an answering machine at what should be the busiest time of day didn't bode well for my order. If you're a pizza place in a college town during lunch time and you don't have call waiting, well, you're not even really trying to stay in business.
There's also no website -- or, worse, the website listed comes up as unauthorized.
But the fun really began when I called again, and finally got 'help' from a man who must have been either stoned or stupid or both.
He couldn't tell me what they had, not the sizes of the pizzas or the prices or the toppings. When I told him that I'd once had a (quite good, actually) "Mexican pizza" from Old Town, he seemed confused (at first) and then said that he "didn't have that because the girl who makes it isn't in today."
"Not in? You mean, you don't have a recipe?!" I would have pushed it, but I knew I was dealing with someone who had the mental capacity of a calzone.
The final topping came when, seemingly confused by the whole order process and not really knowing where Wabash was -- seriously, how does a pizza place three blocks from an all-male college not have knowledge of the campus, a campus map, or even a student in their employ?!?! -- I asked the guy if he wanted my phone number, just in case he got lost.
"I guess," he said, seemingly as indifferent to my not-too-creative idea as he is to sobriety.
Anyway, it sucks that this place sucks. But in the end, the pizza is (somehow) pretty good.
Ordered a carryout pizza and hot ham and cheese sandwich the other day. Â All extremely tasty and well-prepared. Â When we got there, the owner informed us that their credit card machine wasn't working. Â We didn't have cash or checks on us, so he suggested we take it home and enjoy it and come back in the next couple days to pay for it. Â We did. Â Very friendly guy, quick service overall. Â Nice to have another independent pizza shop in the old ville.
A couple of cons: Their menu doesn't match the one listed on the website, and their hours are somewhat of a mystery to me.
