I've been here late-night for drinks but went for the first time for dinner last weekend when the family was in town. Now my family complains about EVERY meal we eat out. Cheap or fancy, doesn't matter they complain. But they didn't complain about this one! Not one complaint! We had the chicken marsala special. Which I never order out! Last time I did was at Rosie's (RIP) and it was AWFUL. Like inedible. Anyway this one was great with lots of mushrooms! Â I had the bayou burger w/onion rings, also a special. It was awesome. I asked for half packed up when we left and she even packed up the 2 onion rings left. Love it! Also had the crispy chicken sandwich w/bacon. That was great too. The drinks: mudslide, strawberry & mango margarita & plain old beer were also good, large & reasonably priced ($8 for the fancy ones). I will return.
Review Source:I'd totally go back here some day, if my friends made me.
I mean, I had fun because I was with my friends. Bar service was terrible, and the only reason I know this is because our waitress never came back to our table after she dropped off our first round of drinks. The bathroom was pretty gross. The karaoke was weird. The people were weirder.
Some of you seem to be really into it. It's all yours. Fer realz.
Fun fun fun !!
They have it all pool tables ,, were so fun that we may come on regular basis we had play against other guest that made the night fly by we do need some practice for we only won once ! ;(
Have I'd ready they ask everyone !!
Basket ball throw --- awesome !!
Dj -- great tunes !! Their dance for filled up pretty quick so it makes you want to get up again and again !
Drinks -- amazing !!!
Parking wasn't bad either and very friendly place !!
This is a weird place. I mean, on my one visit here, I had a good time, but I think that was because I had enough cheap beer that by midnight, I didn't care.
The strangest thing I noticed when walking in here was that it was very bright for a bar. It was Last Call bright in there at like 10:30 in the evening. I feel like at 2 they just blast a spotlight in everyone's eyes to force them, staggering out the door.
Simply put, this is a townie bar. Based on the location, that shouldn't be too surprising, but I feel like you're only really supposed to come here if you were born within stumbling distance of the door. Everyone I talked to was nice, and reminded me a lot of the people I grew up with in Maine, but then, drowning my social anxieties in cheap beer is the only way I fit in with people in my hometown, too.
I walked in with 3 female friends, and some of the people in On the Hill Tavern assumed that I was a swinger, and I would be going home with all 3 of them at the end of the night. I think says a lot about the crowd at this place.
...like maybe it's a crowd I need to hang out with a little more, just to see how strange it gets.
We came here specifically because On The Hill is one of the few remaining places in Somerville with a Golden Tee video game, as well as to have a few drinks. We had a good time. Â On The Hill is like 4 places spliced together: dining, bar, bistro, and pool hall - something for everybody. Good beer list. It was lively without being loud, even on a busy night.
Best place for parking is the metered area next to CVS across the street.
Mike is no longer the trivia guy. Â We had some new guy last night who had very little personality, talked WAY too loud and even said that even though the trivia night is sports and entertainment, 90% of it would be sports questions. Â Did not bode with with the trivia regulars and I am really disappointed.
I don't think I want to go back for trivia because 90% sports is not cool. Â We need more entertainment! Â
Also, the menu has changed and I'm not sure if it's for the better. Â They kept the steak tips but added some different stuff and I just don't know if it's going to last. Â I have to take a star away from that. Â
Still have great service though but they are losing a star for trivia guy from last night (7.11.12).
On the Hill Tavern is no more than your typical area dive bar, although it's a lot bigger than you would expect from the outside. Â Giant TVs line the walls, making it a great place to grab a bite and a beer during a game. Â There's also pool and darts in the back room for those of us that like the bar games.
Typical cheap (CHEAP) pub grub and drinks. Â Awesome beer specials (which would be great if only I could drink beer), and a giant mixed drink will only run you $5. Â They're pretty strong, too!
The servers and bartenders are attentive, personable, and funny. Â Our bartender even came up with our trivia team name last night! Â I would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for a typical divey sports bar in the area.
Started the night in Somerville, headed in town only to end up back in the Ville. Tavern is big with pool tables, dart boards and a basketball game at one end. Middle is tables and wrap around bar. Back is dance floor. Not a bad set up. Bathrooms are HORRENDOUSLY SMALL! Food is solid pub grub. Trivia night on Tuesdays has a good guy running it. I used to play in a dart league there so we became regulars and the waitresses Colleen, Michelle and Linda always took care of us. I do like knowing some of the bartenders like Jimmy, Stacy and of course TOMMY!!! Definitely helps knowing the guys working the door too. Just in case some nonsense happens with some of these 20 something year olds then It's nice being a townie.

Probably the bar I frequent most so I can't believe I haven't reviewed it yet. Â
We go pretty much for two reasons: sports or trivia. Â
During football games wings are half-off and they're pretty tasty but have never once (in the 20+ times we've asked) actually cooked them extra crispy. Â I don't know why...someday we might ask if we should stop asking, but, it's just habit...
Most of the basic American beer pitchers are $7 - this includes the Shock Top Pumpkin in the fall. Â
While not all the servers are the most smiley people on the planet, we've actually never had bad service - everyone is super attentive and on the ball. Â
We've had another bar staples - fries, mozz sticks, burgers, etc. and they're all totally decent too. Â
We're seriously always shocked by how cheap are bill is...and it doesn't hurt that it's a 10 minute walk max - even in a blizzard.
I frequent the Tavern on the Hill for several reasons. They have $7 pitchers of Budlight, $9 pitchers of Shocktop, and the most delicious burgers you could ever want.
When I stop by at lunch its quiet, and friendly. When I stop by at night its packed, but I can usually get a seat. They have pool tables and dart boards in the back, although you might want to get there early if you want to play.
I have always met good people there, and haven't ever had any problems.
A big plus is BIG BUCK HUNTER, who doesn't want to get drunk and shoot animals!
The only reason I'm giving a 4 star and not a 5 is that once a waitress completely forgot my order, and it never came and once I put an order in for food close to when the kitchen was closing and they canceled it but didn't tell me, so I waited an hour for my food to be told that it wasn't coming when i finally asked.
All in all a fun place.
Trivia night (Tuesday: general knowledge, Wednesday: Sports/Entertainment) is my isssh.
Trivia starts at 8:30, but if you don't get there EARLY you can't sit up near the kitchen where it happens. Case an point: this week we got there at 7, it was packed!
Mike, who runs Stump! Trivia night is really nice. Has a fantastic sense of humor when we bring up REALLY incorrect answers, and when he comes around to start it, he explains the nights game, and encourages us at the end noting how well we did up until 3rd quarter, or whatever. It's fun!
Steak tips: good, "medium" is just right!
Side salad: good
Fries: used to be good, now, not so much anymore
Onion rings: decent
Tavern burger: a huge undertaking, but pretty good
Nachos w/ chicken: good and large enough to share with at least 3 people
Pu-pu platter: says it's for two, feel free to order it for 3, it's big.
Since I've been going regularly, the bartenders and waitresses have seemed nicer.
There is always fantastic people watching to be had here. It may or may not be part of the draw for me...
Went back. Played a $1.50 game of pool on a level table, killed cold germs with a strong vodka soda and nodded my head to the sweet and sour sounds cranking from the juke.
It's still seedier than a rooftop garden, and unlike older townies, the mid-20's crowd seem to get a wee bit aggressive by the night's end.
Gram swears by their steak tips and I hear Tuesday night trivia is a decent midweek sumpin sumpin. You're climbing the ladder, OTHT, but the rungs are still greasy.
This is a great dive bar.
Every Dive bar should have the following:
1. Entertainment in the form of games. They have pool tables and an awesome hoops fever game that I'm addicted to (See pictures for the record score).
2. Lot's of TV's to watch sports. They have this covered as well. I didn't have any problem watching the game.
3. Decent food. The food doesn't have to be great but there should be one dish that you can go to that you really like. The marinated steak tips are awesome. I highly recommend them.
I had high hopes for this place - I really did!
We dang near were the only customers when we walked in. Â She even told us we were her favorite customers! Â We ordered drinks, shots and food every time she came to our table...seriously! Â Why you ask...because she only came to our table every 45 minutes! Â Sometimes we had to go get her just to get so she would come to the table. Â I understand at one point she did get busy, but still - we were giving them a lot of business and there were a lot of times the server was not busy, we could flat out see her socializing.
We were trying our hardest to have a Medford bar crawl and tie one on and On the Hill Tavern was not letting it happen - FAIL!
I will be back here because the food was awesomely greasy  pub food, the guys played pool forever, the drinks were strong, the people watching is second to none and it is way too close to my house not too.  So here it to hoping my update is 5 stars!!
This is a great townie bar that provides everything I'm looking for in a townie bar. Pool tables, darts, BUCK HUNT, trivia and pretty good bar food. Plus it's walking distance.
Mainly I come here for pitchers and really reasonably priced steak tips or, my fave, chicken tips. We're talking like 8 bucks for a good-sized portion that comes with your choice of a side. You can't go wrong.
Service is usually pretty friendly and, in my opinion, better than many other area bars.
I'm giving this place a 4 specifically because it's one of the only place in the area where you can play pool. Â Plus the tables and cues are in pretty good shape for a typical bar. Â If you really enjoy good competition I would probably venture some where else.
The service is rarely lack-luster, and they have enough draughts to get through. Â They usually have a pretty good deal on pitchers. Â I personally have never eaten here, but I have never heard any complaints.
This place has a nice mix of locals and students that will make almost any night interesting.
This is by all means a townie dive bar.
I'd like to make it clear that I mean that not as an insult, just a label.
The $6 pitchers of Bud are great. I hate Bud but i can't pass up that deal. The locals are certainly entertaining.
I cannot walk in there without running into 5-10 people i graduated high school with.
Then theres Mo. He adds a lot to the place, just being there, opposing every Boston team possible!
The bouncers are entertaining, they're funny and they'll let you know when it's time to "get the fuck out!"
Tuesday and Wednesday nights are trivia and the weekends have a DJ. Food is pretty good, too.
All in all this place is a good time, but I won't be a regular.
anon, fat townie! anon!
spew thee thine noble expletives, chugeth thine 6 dollar pitcher! taketh thine hand to yonder plastic riffle and shooteth thou endangered species! hey nani nani! a safari slut!
look on, brave townie, look on! Â mine eyes do seeith a fake blonde hussy, her tits doth jiggle whilst she cusseth the holes to which her balls to enter will not... it must pain thy little heart, that thou be such a lousy pool player, and so slutty too...
i've been spending too much time with geoffrey chaucer. little perve.
all this for 13 dollars.
Wednesday night trivia at On the Hill Tavern was awesome! Â Our team arrived at this lovely little dive an hour prior to stake out a spot - though we now know that we didn't need to. Â (Even a half hour prior to trivia, the only folks in the establishment were chilling at the bar).
By the time the Stump guy arrived, the place was decently full and our table was well on our way through some pretty standard bar food. Â (Oh buffalo chicken sandwich, I love you). Â Though I have to say: the crinkle cut french fries? Â Crispy heaven. Â Yum.
The trivia was some of the best we've played! Â We were pleased to find that on Wednesdays the trivia is solely Entertainment/Sports while Tuesday at the Tavern is more general knowledge.
Super fun for an impromptu evening out!
on several trips to Olde Magoun's, I passed this place and thought what a complete dive it must be inside. Â Thanks to a line around the corner this past weekend at Olde Magoun's, we opted for this place instead and I was surprised by what I encountered.
OK, it's not THAT much different than I expected, and I definitely do not turn my nose up to places that are veritable dives. Â But this one definitely is a notch higher than a dive bar, and seems somewhat out of place in the Boston area. Â It feels a lot more like college bars I have encountered elsewhere. Â and that's an OK thing. Â I definitely want to come try it again when it isn't packed to the rafters with post-race drinkers.
One star for $5 pitchers of Bud Light +
One star for Tuesday Night Trivia +
One star for the group of old townie hens who bring their own condiments and wear glittery cat sweaters (no lie) +
One star for delicious buffalo sandwich and mozerella sticks +
One star for weird mini-jumbotron screens that display freaky messages from crazy patrons +
One star for being my favorite local dive =
SIX STARS! Oh well, five stars it is...
I think the diveness and townieness of this bar has been well covered. The bar is big and clean, but the bar has KEENO...enough said.
Having said that..its a great place to play trivia (Tuesday nights at 8). It was not too hard to win here...in fact, we beat people who were blatantly cheating and calling people on cell phones (stupid calling stupid). First place is $50 bucks - which at $5 bud pitchers and cheap ass but decent bar food, more than covered our bill for 4 people. Â They have decent wings and fries, and its fun. At the pace trivia goes, can always play some pool in between.
Yes its a townie bar..but the townies do their own thing and don't bother you. Food is cheap, beer cheaper.
Have only been here on Tuesdays for the trivia. Other than going to Razzy's once, this is the only other venue I've experienced trivia. It's not bad... the host guy is fair... he allows answers so long as he knows what you're trying to convey.
I saw that on some night they have guitar hero... I have only played that game twice and love it... hrm, wonder how embarrassing it would be to go play beginner guitar hero at a bar... i think VERY so I'll pass... but if you're good at it, thought you might like the FYI.
You cannot argue with a townie bar that has FREE POOL on Monday nights ands $5 pitcher specials. I can't say I would come here for any other reason then what lead me here on Sunday...the playoffs, Pats vs. the Chargers, and Olde Magoun's had not a seat left in the house at 2:15. (we checked!)
The BF suggested this joint as the back up plan and phoned all necessary parties to make sure they knew to meet us there. Whoever runs this place is smart - to prepare for the expected huge crowd for the game, they turned the pool tables into extra seating. We scored one of these for our group and proceeded to eat, drink and be merry.
The wings were good, the beers were relatively cheap and the crowd was great - everyone was drunk and cheering for the Pats. I don't even want to know what it looks like in here on a Tuesday night at 5:00pm.
Not that this place is somewhere I will travel to on a regular basis, but it was the best possible spot for the soccer team to hang out after a game at "Tufts Field." Â The field that we played on was absolute dirt compared to the bar. Â
There were $6.75 pitchers (always love that. The only other spot I could find cheap pitchers is at Conor Larkins) and $1.75 16 oz Bud Lights. Â We bought a bunch of these. Â And a bunch of hungry guys and gals feasted on all sorts of good food:
Greek Salad: Â Okay, so they use iceberg lettuce, but what do people really want the greek salad for? feta. Â And there's plenty of that! Â And for those olive-lovers, they also serve a hefty amount of pit-in (= flavorful) kalamata olives. Â I'd ask for more dressing though.
Hot Pastrami: Â Served on a grilled hamburger bun. Â The yummy pastrami fat soaks up that bottom bun. Â Just the right amount of cheese and you get to choose between swiss and american. Â Yum-mo!
Steak Tips: Â I think they're from Bob's on Medford Street. Â They were grilled to perfection and tasted sweet and tangy and melted in your mouth. Â
French Fries: Â Nothing to drool over. Â I think they were purchased from the freezer section of Market Basket. Â
And finally, atmosphere. Â There were some interesting locals yelling at each other and the televisions which were showing all sorts of games. Â Plenty of big tvs and space and billiards! Â
It ended up being a pretty sweet place. Â So, if you're in the area and need a spot for a cheap beer and decent bar food for a steal and you don't mind the occassional looks from the locals, this is the place to go.
This is the type of place where a guy will receive a compliment from every woman in the bar simply by wearing a Big Dog t-shirt that says "Can your boobs stop staring at me? Please!"
It also happens to be the type of place that serves five dollar pitchers of Bud. Translation: go on a Sunday afternoon and get drunk cheap, but NEVER step foot in this place on a Friday night.
Ah, my favorite little townie bar. Â
This is the place that made it hard to find a reason to spend money anywhere else. Â Dollar drafts! Â $5 pitchers! You can have a drunk night out for $10. That's my kind of bar.
The food is pretty good. Â I haven't tried much of the menu, but I've always been satisfied with what I have had...salads, burgers, chicken, fries. I wouldn't necessarily purposely go out to eat there, but its a good place to stop in when you're hungry and want something easy. Though more than once the waitress has completely forgotten to put our order in until we've reminded her once or twice.
The crowd is townie. I mean, what do you expect? Â There's the token old dudes playing Keno, the chatty old ladies that may or may have not been there since 10am, the yah dude college types, the hootchie girls, and then various townies from Medford and Somerville who are always up for good conversation. Â
I've always felt comfortable there whether I'm there to watch a game, participate in Trivia night, or go watch their karaoke night titled Tavern Idol. It's one of the few bars I wouldn't mind going to by myself because I know there's always someone to chat up, and no pretentiousness.
Downfall is that the lights are ALWAYS up high. Like middle school dance brightness. Â Even on the weekends. I've always assumed this is the reason why, even though on a few nights a week and the weekend nights there is a DJ, no one dances. But hey, at least they make your beer goggles a little clearer!
Parking is easy - either street parking or you can park across the street at CVS which is a public lot.
A DELIGHTFUL ARMPIT OF A BAR
I actually enjoy On the Hill for what it is, a dive bar with lots of local flavor (although I don't recommend tasting anything in this place). Â The drinks are cheap, the girls are friendly, and the accents are thick. Â The bartender also makes a mean jager-bomb. Â Tell him to class it up for you and give you the shot in a glass not a plastic dixie cup. Â I know...I'm so demanding.
the tavern on the hill (i dunno thats what i call it) is a totally creepy disaster of a bar, that, on occasion can be a pretty damn good time. it all comes down to what kinda crowd is there. Â
for example, on random tavern adventures i have: Â seen girls making out on a table; had my life threatened by a giant muscle bound man whos medication was clearly having adverse effects on his socializing skills; won $20 in a pool game; and gotten a 50 year old man kicked out for grabbing my sister.
in other words, the place is a complete clusterf*ck.
on the upside, cheapest drinks anywhere around, nicest bartenders and bouncers i love em and they really look out for the ladies, and occasionally some good sox/pats/celts/bruins convo with the locals. Â like i said, its a good time....occasionally.
this is definitely a townie bar. Â it's also the best townie bar around. Â where else can you get 5$ pitchers? Â that alone garners 1star by itself. Â they always have something going on at this bar. Â trivia night, some sort of american idol, poker nights and they're all free. Â plus they give out prizes for those thing too. Â
never had any food here, but i've seen some people eat stuff and it looked descent. Â don't worry, i'm a good judge on looks.
place is clean and well lit for a bar. Â ample flat screen tvs, pool tables, and the all important scratch ticket machines. Â i won a 2$ on a dollar scratch once at this place. Â *warning* you may not be able to duplicate that type of success. Â gambling should be left to the professionals.
if one of the guys looks familiar behind the bar, he could be. Â that could be your ups guy. Â
the ladies that hang out here are generally better looking than at other townie bars so that's another plus. Â they're still townie girls, so you might still get your ass kicked.
this place almost makes me aspire to be a townie some day.
I've only been here for trivia nights on Tuesday. Â You couldn't catch me here any other time. The place has no character, is too bright, filled with townies, and their food is BAD. Â Somehow a chicken tender was RAW in the middle and the steak tips are chewy and bland.
However, I absolutely cannot bring myself to give this place a bad review because of the genuinely friendly and accomodating staff. I can't say enough about them. Â I feel like I read reviews and someone could love everything top to bottom, but a waiter looked at them the wrong way and they'll give the place one star and go on a rant. By that rationale, this place should have five stars. Â (I don't follow that credence.)
So stop in for $5 pitchers and good service. Stay away from the food. Play some trivs. Play some pool (lots of pool tables). Good times.
In an effort to review every seedy location in my hood, I'll add another to the group for On The Hill Tavern. In one word? Amusing. I always get a kick out of the clientele at this bar. Stereotypical New England sports bar, full of townies drinking their faces off every night from 5-10pm. To some it might seem sad and pathetic. To me, funny!
The food is passable. Â I get the steak tips or the turkey club. The club is fresh from a real turkey, not nasty slimy deli slice turkey. Bonus! I usually get a side salad to balance out the grease of the french fries. Be warned, their idea of a side salad is a small bowl of iceberg lettuce with two tomato slices and two cucumber slices. Most dinners hover around the $6-10 range. So cheap!!
The real reason to hit up The Tavern? $5 pitcher specials. The selection varies between Coors and Bud but what do you expect for $5? Drafts of specials are $2 and other drafts are just barely more expensive. The bar offers a poker night, trivia night, amazing karaoke competition (in an 'I'm so embarrassed for you' kind of way), scratch ticket machine, Keno TVs, tons of flat screen TVs for watching the game of your choice, a dart board (bring your own darts) and two pool tables. The bartenders are relatively attentive but it's clear they favor regulars (as would I).
It really is a great place to take in a game and mock the townies if that's your thing. However, I don't recommend coming here on a Saturday night. It gets a little bit out of control and the skanks take over en masse. Watch out for the hordes of smokers hovering by the door.
Simply put, this is a divey sports bar. It's trashy, in a good way. Super white trash, the kind of folks you wanna hang out with on a Thursday night. I want to give this place two stars, but there was an awful man in a sweater vest singing Jimmy Buffet songs WAY TOO LOUD all night and that just makes me ill.
Drinks were served in plastic cups. The table and floor are littered with scratch tickets and empty beer cups. Wall decorations are an overwhelming frenzy of cheap beer promotional posters and inflatables. Everyone in this bar was wearing either a sports jersey or sweatpants or both. The ladies were chewing tobacco and playing Keno.
There was a great sign in the bar, printed off a computer, that read "No shots after 1 AM on Friday and Saturday." Makes ya really look forward to Sunday nights, the true sports fan's drinking night.
