I had driven past this place many times and wondered what it was like inside. Â It caught my eye with its line of Greco-Roman statues down the sidewalk, colorful flowers, and a large mural on the side of the building. Â At long last, I made the trip to Union Bridge for no particular reason (it's not really that far from Frederick), and went inside. Â Parking is across the street in a large, metered lot.
The interior is very casual, filled with bright orange booths. Â You order at the counter, and the waiter brings the food to your table. Â You pay at the counter when you leave. Â Please note--they do NOT ACCEPT CREDIT/DEBIT CARDS. Â Fortunately we had cash...
Menu is fairly large and includes pizza, sandwiches, appetizers, and many other items. Â A sign on the counter advertised homemade rice pudding. Â We tried a large veggie pizza, which came out rather quickly and was delicious and high quality. Â I would like to try the white pizza when I go back. Â
Service is efficient and no fuss.
My favorite aspect of Original Pizza is that it is in effect a museum of local history. Â It has the largest collection of old photos of the surrounding area that I have seen in one place. Â The walls are covered with historical photos, letters, and newspaper clippings, and several display cases of historical items line the walls. Â A rather unorthodox piece of wall art in the rear of the restaurant shows what appears to be, er, Christoper Columbus bringing pizza to the new land. Â Egads! Â Photo attached.
So if you are a local history buff, or if you merely enjoy a good pizza and find yourself near Union Bridge, check it out. Â And then head down to the Union Bridge General Store (see my review of that for more info) for all your diverse shopping needs. Â Or Esquire Liquors, if you have other plans (ok, really the name Esquire Liquors just amuses me!). Â If you are feeling truly, truly bold, swing by for a hair cut at the cleverly-named Hair and Now salon (but maybe swing by Esquire first to steel your nerves)...
