Came in on Saturday night. The parking lot did not have many cars in it at 6:30pm, which made me kind of nervous. We walked in to an unattended hostess station and looked around, not sure whether to go up or down. The not-so-friendly hostess eventually came over and told us about our options for where to sit.
Our waiter was very friendly and knew the menu really well. My sandwich was great and was served on fresh bread. It was very filling. My wife had the turkey entree and enjoyed it. The bill was reasonable.
Overall, a good experience. If the hostess wasn't sitting a few tables away from us with a sour puss on her face sipping her water, it may have been a better experience. She should really have been sitting near the door so that first timers don't feel like they're walking in to a haunted house. Or, she could have stayed home and sipped her water on her own time...
Good thing this wasn't my first visit here or it may have been the one and only time.
Tonight's experience ranks up there with the absolute worst experiences I've had when eating out somewhere. Â When your visit to the establishment starts with being tailgated by an employee on part of the drive there, you have to wonder how the experience will be. Â Even more so when said employee is the server you get stuck with.
The place is usually pretty bad about having someone ready to seat people. Â That was nothing new and didn't surprise me when we walked in and saw nobody at the host area like always. Â When he finally found out we were there he had to rush and clean a table before seating us and promising to bring us back menus.
A good ten minutes later our server wanders over to our table and asks what we would like for drinks. Â We ordered and also ordered some menus to which he seemed embarrassed that we did not have any. Â It was just the start of him being embarrassed towards us the entire time we were there.
The nacho appetizer we ordered was lackluster. Â The burger my fiancee had was also lackluster. Â My white pizza was as good as always, one of the consistently good things about Owen O'leary's. Â The server forgot to bring over an ordered drink a few times. Â Was never really checked up on to see if we needed anything, etc, and the one time he did and my fiancee ordered an additional drink, it took a long time for it to arrive to which he said was 'technical difficulties'.
We were able to witness the walking technical difficulty known as the bartender later on after we ordered desert beverages.  It took a  good 20+ minutes for her to even finish making them.  She seemed to do everything humanly possible besides finish making our drinks.  Our drinks sat on the bar partly made for almost the whole 20+ minutes and our server had to actually complete making one of them for her!  Being able to watch her not make our drinks just heightened our frustration at the whole experience.  Then to top it off, the actual real desert we wanted they were out of ingredients to make it!  He didn't tell us until after the desert drinks were ready and by that point we didn't want to wait another 20-30 minutes for something else so we had the drinks and left.
I might want to go there again for the white pizza. Â For everything else? Â I think my days of wanting to go to Owen O'leary's for anything else are over.
I stumbled in here one day for some late night eats (around 9 pm). Not many places are open this late and I get the occasional itch for some true Irish pub fare.
The first time I came here I got the Irish Banger Sandwich, which is the Irish rendition of sausage and peppers in a bulkie roll. A little greasy, but delicious and I definitely recommend. It came with Colcannon mashed potatoes (topped with cabbage and onions), which was a hit with me.
I came here again late last Friday because the boy and I were in the area. I got the Irish Mixed Grill (2 bangers, 4 steak tips, 2 Irish bacon, with Colcannon mash) for $15. The place was HUGE. I would definitely get this dish again - the steak tips were delicious and cooked perfectly to my order (rare)!
The furnishings are a little bit worn, but it's an Irish pub. I've had great service and experiences here, and would definitely come here again.
A small plus: they participate in the Rewards Network, so if you like dining for airline miles, here's a great place to do it!
I've been here a number of times and likely to go back many more. The building is oddly set up so I can see where some people are put off and make comments such as "Am I supposed to seat myself?" Answer: No, you just have to find a member of the wait staff. The food is great for bar food and still good by any other standard you choose, but the service is very hit-or-miss. Sometimes its great other times... not so much.
Review Source:We went here tonight for the trivia night that they advertise. We were told  on the phone that it started at 7:30..... When we arrived a posted flyer said 8:30..... The guy who greeted us at the door said it started at 8....we went in and asked our waiter and he said 8:30.... So we ordered and had a very nice meal. No complaints there.....try the buffalo Mac n cheese.
By 8:45 when we saw no sign of anyone setting up for a trivia game , we bounced....kind of disappointing. Why advertise the thing and then blow it off ? Also you couldn't hear yourself think in there , the music was so loud. A minor quibble , but somewhat annoying.
I just moved to Framingham (about 200 yards from Ashland), and needed to find a place that meets my simple requirements:
1. They must have Bud Light on draft.
2. They must have Keno and other assorted games of chance.
3. They must have decent pub food to go.
A few quick searches led me to Owen O'Leary's, and I'm glad I found it. It's a comfortable, friendly spot with shockingly good pub food and is incredibly cheap. And when I say "shockingly", I mean it.
Generally you expect something greasy and bland at a place like this (think the 99), but you'd be wrong. Their chicken parm is excellent and their steak tips are among the best I have had when it comes to pub food (admittedly I don't eat steak tips often).
If you expect a fine dining experience, this isn't that. I feel like I have to stress that here, as people expect 4 stars to mean "this is the best meal I've ever eaten". Within the context of pub food, this is 4/5.
For St. Patrick's Day you would think that they would be prepared for the crowds, but they were not.  No host at the at the door.  People started milling around not knowing if we were to seat ourselves.  The bartender mentioned that someone would be with us shortly but that never happened. So several groups stared to seat themselves, informing the  wait staff were each was sitting.  You would wonder why a 4 star-rating after all this.  Well the food is good. The irish specialties were delicious and the house brews were to my liking.  In previous visits the problem with seating has never occurred even with a packed house.
Review Source:We went to Owen O'Leary's last night for a friend's birthday party. Â For what it is: a local Irish pub/restaurant, it's pretty good. Â In comparison to other similar places, I think it's a great place. Â The food is your basic bar food, but it did not seem as greasy as other silimarl foods that I've had at other pubs. Â My wife and I had the chicken tenders and homemade onion rings. Â The chicken fingers were greasier than the onion rings, but still not too bad. Â Surprisingly, my stomach is not a mess today, which is usually the case when I eat this kind of food! Â We were with a big group of people, and while I did not taster their food, it all looked really good. Â
The staff here is friendly and attentive. Â I noticed an older gentleman (possibly one of the owners) walking around and keeping the place the clean. Â The highlight of the night was the Owen O'Leary's STOUT draught beer (they brew their own beers). Â The stout was delicious, creamy, smooth, and not too heavy. Â Excellent!
It's not fancy but Owen O'Leary's is a good place to go for a beer and hang out with friends. I visit occasionally after work to have a drink and play some pool. The food is okay but nothing special to write home about. The waitstaff and bartenders I've encountered have always friendly and overall the place has a nice atmosphere.
Review Source:Came here for the first time, and it was a pleasant dining experience. I ordered something that had bangers and mash, steak tips and Irish bacon. Everything was good and cooked well to my liking. The atmosphere was comfortable, and the waitstaff was acceptional. I'd definetaly come back.
Review Source:If you read a lot of my reviews, you'll notice a trend... we'll try anywhere that offers a good deal. We've eaten here a bunch of times, but have been twice lately because we got a "discount card" promo thingie from a fundraiser and have had two meals half off... not too bad!
It's pretty annoying that there's never anyone at the host stand when you come in, which leads to an awkward period of standing there, then walking down to stare at somene at the bar until they notice you standing there and then seat you. It's really the only bad thing about the place, but it's kind of obnoxious that it happens every time.
Once you're actually at a table, the service is friendly and attentive. Prices are generally good, and AMAZING on the specials. The $9.99 roast special on weeknights is an amazing deal. I had the roast turkey with stuffing and mashed potatoes, plus drink and dessert. It was really good. On our last trip, I had the steak tips and they were delish.
Overall, a good meal at a good price with friendly atmosphere (though it is a bit dark). And when it's half off, even better!
Just like others say, if you live/work in the area you just end up at Owen's. I usually come here for work events. Whether it's a Team lunch, dinner or just a gathering for happy our Owen's is always consistent with what they provide.
The food is standard pub fare and is pretty good, although a bit pricey at times. The drink selection is also pretty good.
Every time I have been here I always go upstairs because we are usually larger groups. If you can an hour or so in advance they can reserve a large table or a big portion of the bar for your group; very accommodating.
I wouldn't really go out of my way to go to Owen's but I never turn it down when there is a gathering there. Try it ot for yourself if you're nearby!
If you ask me whether i frequent Owen O'leary's, i would respond with an emphatic 'of course not' - but upon further reflection, i have been there an awful lot over the past several years - between work events, meetups with friends in the area, and of course, that bar staple - fantasy football drafts. (I'll go ahead and give Owen's partial credit for my repeat 2nd place finishes the past two years)
In that time, i've probably sampled most of the appetizer menu, very little of the entree menu, and a good 50% of the beers on tap. Â I've really enjoyed their appetizers, their entrees have been solid, and i find their beers hit or miss. Â When i've found something i liked, i tend to really enjoy it, but there's also a few that didn't even taste beer-like. Â More of the former than the latter.
Karaoke here is fun, if you've got a good crowd (tends to be dead some weeks), and sitting out on the deck in the summer is nice - it's tucked away from Route 9 enough that you're not constantly subjected to traffic noises.
-Convenient location
-Ambient interior.
-Friendly staff
-Their OWN beers
Also, got the "pupu platter." Â The mozzarella stick was perfect. Â Who would have thought one mozz stick could be so much more superior than another? Â Yet... there you have it. Â Perfection. Â The buffalo chicken was also very good and the blue cheese dressing has exactly the right balance of cheese. Â The spinach dip, however, was bland. Â It really wanted garlic and maybe some onions. Â
Anyway, overall, quality joint!
It's Monday night after 10pm and I got turned away from Outback which had just closed their doors. As I head back on Rte. 9 east to Framingham I've given up finding a decent meal--perhaps any meal--when I see a structure glowing on the side of road, the parking lot full of cars... Owen O'leary's. Entering the restaurant there was a buzz of activity, upstairs there are a bunch of younger people playing pool, downstairs the bar was busy with an older crowd. With no hostess in site I was about to leave, but curiosity got the better of me. So I headed further inside. I finally spotted a waitress and asked if the kitchen was still open. Affirmative, I was seated at a table and within minutes I had a complete meal of French onion soup, prime rib with garlic mashed potatoes and steamed broccoli. Everything was freshly made and absolutely delicious. And for dessert the apple crisp topped with homemade whipped cream and caramel sauce hit the spot. I left stuffed and a bit dazzled. This wasn't just late night food (and Monday night no less). This was one of the best meals I've had in weeks. And dinner is served until 12:30am. No more late night starvation for me!
Review Source:I've been here a few times in the past, but never during the fabulous "happy hour" where they have 25 cent wings and 99 cent pizza (cheese only). Â The wings were pretty good and well, who can screw up pizza? Â Also, the drink prices are very reasonable. Â
In warmer weather, there is an outdoor porch, which is a great combo with a glass of house wine or Sam Summer Ale.
Owen O'Leary's is one of my favorite local restaurants. Â As other reviewers have mentioned - it takes a little while for someone to notice you waiting to be seated at the Host stand, but they eventually show up. Â I asked once if we were just supposed to seat ourselves (for future reference), and they told me, "No, there is usually someone at the stand." Well, I've been here at least six times, and there has NEVER been anyone at the Host Stand.
The wait to be seated is where the trouble stops though. Â
The staff is friendly, the menu is expansive, and the prices are not bad at all. Â They frequently run specials, such as "Two Entree Combos" on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Â They serve traditional Irish Fare (try their Bangers and Mash), as well as other American cuisine options (try their Sausage Bake). Â I've also been pleasantly surprised with their Stuffed Mushrooms, French Onion Soup, and delicious dessert options. Â I've never had anything there that I didn't like!
During a recent stay in Framingham I was looking for a place to eat. My girlfriend and I just hopped in the car and drove up and down the street. Own O'Leary's caught both of our eyes so we decided to check it out.
We walked in and waited up at the host stand for a little, while waiting for someone to come help us. Eventually they did, they brought us through the bar and down a few more stairs to a dining area. It had a great feel and you could tell the waiter knew a few of the regulars around.
Haddock seemed to their fish of choice since there were tons of fish options on the menu, all prepared with haddock. Â I ordered the fish and chips, and was EXTREMELY happy with it. There really wasn't anything about it I was disappointed in. To drink I got their micro-brew which was called Golden (much like a Stella). I cannot remember what dessert we got, but it was delicious!
Another awesome thing about the place to me was the minor details they focus on. The placement of the bathroom was in the corner of the dining area. Since this was off to the side they were able to do a separate side stair case from the bar to the bathroom. This meant that the patrons drinking at the bar could go to the bathroom without disrupting the people there interested in just some simple dining.
Overall a great dining experience and a great meal.
On a whim, needing a bite to eat, my boyfriend and I were driving through the area and at the last minute decided to swing into the Owen O'Leary's parking lot. What luck!
I was a little dismayed initially as when we walked into the restaurant no one came up to seat us. We stood there for a while until someone came up and finally asked us if we wanted to sit at the bar or in the restaurant, and not wanting to dangle over a bar stool, we opted for the restaurant.
Planted in a booth, an incredibly friendly waiter came over and took our drink orders, followed by our food orders. I opted for the Greek fish selection, which was a white fish (I forget what kind) with Spinach, Tomatoes and Feta. I got one of the house brews, and for dessert we got a decadent concoction with Cheesecake, Bananas, Syrup and more.
Overall, the food was delicious. I'm not a big spinach eater, but the way the meal was prepared made it bearable and even delicious! The house brew was good, and the dessert was unnecessarily delicious. Our waiter was extremely friendly and had a table full of older women laughing and hooting and hollering!
The atmosphere was kitschy and amusing with boats and cabin-esque materials posted to the walls, the crowd was cozy and the food was warm and delicious. I'd definitely recommend this to anyone passing through!
