Went there on St. Pattys day for a drink and won't go back. The waitresses were rude the bar tendered pretended they didn't see quite a few people at the bar so they could keep serving the regulars behind us. Left after 30mins waiting at the bar to never get served. The regulars behind us were served 3 times. I know that because we had to move out of the way when the bartender would yell out their names to come get their drinks.
I understand it was kind of busy, but the worst service I've ever gotten on St Pattys day.
Go down some wobbly steps on the side of an unassuming brick building and enter a large heavy black door, which is a secret portal that transports you from Haverhill into Ireland. It will take a minute to adjust to the dark and small space, but the sounds of bagpipe music playing will nudge you forward.
Inside is energetic, cozy, and dim. The Celtic music is noticeable and adds to the vibe, but I wish it could be a little quieter. There is a big wraparound bar with lots of beers on tap perfect for watching sports or to just hang out. Surrounding are small rustic wooden tables and booths scattered about in little nooks and crannies. Lots of knickknacks on the walls to look at. The decor is rustic and old, but everything is very clean. This is definitely a cool place for an intimate but not cheesy date.
Menu is not large but contains all of the pub food that you would expect. And the food is good. Not overly greasy and large portions. When you are seated, they place two big jars of tartar sauce and their homemade chunky ketchup in front of you. The complementary bread is hot, thin slices of grainy soda bread, which I loved.
Bowl of clam chowder had lots of clams, not too many potatoes, was creamy, but not thick. Handcut fries were great. Boyfriend ordered the salmon special, which had a large piece of tender and fresh wild salmon atop flavorful mashed potatoes and some other veggies. They are very proud of their fish and chips, as they should be. Three very large pieces of battered white flaky fish on top of fries (I substituted for sweet potato fries), all wrapped inside newspaper! This is how fish and chips should be served! Delicious.
Service was good, but nothing special. Used a Groupon deal, so I got about $16 off of a meal of 2 appetizers and 2 entrees that was supposed to be $46. Not too bad. I would definitely come back and try everything else on their menu, because this is just the kind of place where you know that anything you order will be good. Great atmosphere to chill, relax, and forget the world outside.
A little pub restaurant with an Irish theme. The food is usually pretty good, but the service leaves something to be desired at times. When it's not busy, you can seat yourself (which is expected for a pub) but we often wait a while for someone to wait on us. There's definitely more emphasis on the bar aspect than the food. We went for dinner one Friday, not intending on drinking, and when the waitress realized this her attitude changed and she barely checked in on us for the rest of our meal, as if we were wasting her time.
If you're not part of the bar crowd, I would suggest going here during the day.
This is the type of place you have to take it for what it is- an Irish Pub. You are not going to get a gourmet dinner here but for some good comfort food with a few unique twists. It is also a great place to just grab a pint. I've been here a few times and never had issues with service (like some of the other reviews state).
As stated in other reviews the ketchup is different and very tasty. Â The nachos are also not what you'd expect. Â The base is potato chips instead of tortilla chips- with cheese, tomatoes and onions. YUM! Â I crave these nachos. Â Overall this place is very tasty (3.5 stars)
They have decent beers on tap. Â I suggest the one in Nashua though.
I have been there a few times. Â The waitresses are rude is the main problem. Â Specifically Lindsay. Â
The food is just okay....My girlfriend really hated hers and it was Irish food that she ordered...so not good.
It's pub fare though. I mean it's a loud pub with some good beers on tap and a full bar...in a basement in Haverhill. Â It's just mediocre.
That waitress is a serious jerk though. Â For literally no reason, we didn't complain, we ordered fast and the tab was pretty big because we were with 5 people...
She got no tip, and I wrote that it was because she was a doucher. Â
I met her at a party later. Â Turns out she is just a mean person...to everyone.
This joint is super cute lil old school historical hideout at the corner of the street. ( it doesn't even look like there is a bar there since you have to step down a little and it's a bit hidden) Â BUT I went here for the first time yesterday with a couple of friends and was pleasantly surprised at how cool and cozy it was inside....I could honestly spend hours looking at all the collectibles spread across the bar...it's also got a cool old Irish bar feel without being shady or gross!
The menu looked delicious and there were some out of ordinary food items like beef stew which sounded cool, but we only ordered from the special football special menu since we were all not really hungry...for $5 Â each you had a couple of interesting choices- fried chicken, a buffalo platter, tater tots and GUINESS soaked pulled pork quesadillas.,....YES you heard me....and there were some other choices that I can't remember....but they all sounded equally enticing.
We decided on the pulled pork and tater tots and the orders were HUGE. I was expecting like little mini appetizer sizes and legit we got like a basketful of tots...( we couldn't even finish all of them and I was tempted to put them in my side pant pocket a la Napolean Dynamite) and they came with an interesting curry sauce....
The pulled pork beer  yummy-ness was humongous and there were 4 gigantic pieces packed with so much pork and salsa that again we didn't even finish it!
OH and their homemade ketchup was pretty interesting...almost tasted like relish!
So so soooo good.
The service was okay...while I was outside waiting for a friend we sat in the outdoor seating area and no one was out there since it was freezing so I had a cigarette. A few minutes later a waitress came out to sit 2 customers and she politely told me I couldn't smoke there even though there was an ashtray thing literally behind me. Then the couple that was there  started smoking in the same area so that was weird but not a big deal...I understand since it's the eating area it's prob disgusting, but it was sunday on a late afternoon and the entire town was dead and football was on!
Also, when we went inside the  waitress we had was nice but seemed impatient at times and forgot my drink- but she was quick and friendly and came back to check on us several times so no biggie.
WIll def come back the next time I'm in the area!
Last week was my second time at the Peddler's Daughter. I have been impressed both times by the food.
What I was not impressed with was the service. Last week, we got to the bar around 8pm, and there was very few people there for a Thursday night. We were told to sit anywhere, and when we did, we waited over 10 minutes for someone to come over and bring us menus. Finally, someone sitting at the bar turned and asked us, "Has anyone come over to see you yet?" and when we said no, it was only then that someone came by to bring menus and ask for drink orders.
It just seemed to me that the waitresses there were a bit lazy. They weren't very attentive, and even though our food came out promptly, it just felt like we were an afterthought. They took our appetizer away before we were completely finished with it...which was odd.
I really like the food there, and I will definitely go back for their burgers and home made ketchup, but something has to be fixed with the ladies who work there....
Great fried fish, lightly battered. My husband loved his sandwich (Cuban, I think). I like that the fries are homemade but they are not cooked enough for me. I like them crispier. But I love the homemade ketchup and tartar sauce! I think it's always going to be fish and chips for me so I can enjoy them both!
Review Source:Stopped in Friday for a drink and possibly grub. I was greeted cheerily from a brunette bartender who pulled a wonderful pint. As I reviewed the menu, a blond bartender made some suggestions for my meal and both ladies were great with a bit of banter with myself and a group who I assume were locals or regulars. I had the pulled pork sliders and when my buddy arrived he had the fish and chips which he loved in the newspaper with the ketchup made on site! There was a great crowd in there and girls were most accommodating and surprisingly attentive with everyone including those seated outside the general bar area. I definitely recommend sitting near the tap area as you can see all the drinks and action going on between everyone. Definitely a great people watching spot!
Later (Chelsea/Jennifer and Jamie) introduced us to some locals and we stayed after dinner for some tunes. Great to have properly poured Guinness, great service, conversation and food to make a great night out. The Peddlers Daughter will a be regular stop for us after a long work week. Slainte!!
I'm with Julie H. on this one.
Not a great place, if it wasn't for the beer selection and the food I would NEVER come back.
Every single time I go here I get a slow, miserable, rude waitress or bartender without fail. They ignore you, walk past you, etc. Customer service is NOT important at the peddlers daughter. You will wait 20 minutes for ketchup for your burger and STILL not get it.
The other night when I came here for dinner I finally got fed-up enough to write this.
Their website says they stop serving food until 9. From going here for drinks I know that the bar stays open until 1. So when we showed up at 8:30pm and wanted some food, we expected to be served. Its not a major inconvenience for any cook to cook a basic chicken sandwich. We could tell it was more about the waitress not wanting to stay.
She came up to us asked if we wanted drinks or food or both we said both. She gave us menus and took our drink orders, came back to the table with our beers and told us that she was sorry but the chef just informed her the kitchen was closed.
Now, excuse me but why would I want to drink a beer at a place where I was planning on having dinner? Don't you think she should've mentioned that before hand? Â Now we have to chug these beers and try to get to a place that is open (mind you its about 8:30 and most places close at 9. Then, 5 minutes later while we're trying to get our beers down the waitress comes over gives us our bill and tries to get us to pay it immediately since she is getting 'sent home'.
Give me a break. I've worked in food service too.
I once brought a friend here who was visiting from NY and wanted to see the Haverhill bar scene. I chose places that I liked and this place was totally embarrassing. The bar tender was completely rude, and almost wouldn't serve us until we begged her to...a full 10 minutes prior to last call. Yet she was serving other customers! The whole rest of the time we were there, they kept harassing US to finish up and we only had this long and then we needed to be out. Yet they don't close by 1 and we had  to be out by 12:40? They weren't rushing the regulars and even served them another round!
Most of the women that work here have this 'haverhill tough-girl' attitude that I'm not particularly fond of.
Anyway, its the same thing different day every single time I come here. Frustrating to get a beer as it seems they only know the meaning of the word service to those with Irish accents.
The more I go here, the more I dislike it. There is one really good bartender in particular, but some of them are just plain rude. Please don't be rude with your customers, It makes me not have an enjoyable experience. I get a really jerky bartender or waitress 80% of the time here. All the men that work here are decent.
The beers are a bit on the expensive end and I got a flat Guiness more than once
The food is mostly fried. The tater tots are deep fried and totally from a bag- like I could make comparably at home. Everything else is expensive and just "meh" as well.
The homemade ketchup is yucky and is served in a mason jar thingys, which weird me out for some reason.
Parking is not easy.
This review is in response to my experiance at the PD yesterday (10/30) afternoon. I have lowered my rating to 1 star because this place really is horrible.
Since most of our area was without power most of the weekend, we decided we would go out for the Pats game and have some dinner and drinks. After trying a few other places before the PD which were shoulder to shoulder, we thought about PD. We were very pleased to find a parking space right out front, but that is when the pleasure ended.
We walked in, and it was crickets. Literally you could hear the dishwasher in the kitchen running. They had the Pats game on, but no sound, or music for that matter. Nothing. Just silence. We figured it was managable because there was cold beer and food, so we stuck it out.
We line up to the bar to grab a few drinks, and wait. And wait. And wait...We are not waiting due to the amount of people in the bar, but solely because of the short blond miserable bartender who looked at us 4 times and walked away. She literally looked right at us standing there at the bar, and walked away. One time she grabbed a sip of coffee...another time she looked at us, and then poured a drink for a "regular" who just walked in. No lie. She looked at us, and instead of asking if we wanted something, she turned around and went to the regular. Nice, huh? She was the most miserable looking woman I have ever seen in my life. God bless her mate...he/she deserves a medal.
Needless to say, we left after that. No beer, no food, nothing. Just a slammed door on my way out. Never again will we give this place our business. Thank you miserable blond bartender (who was working at 4pm) for helping us realize that your place stinks. Smile from time to time. It might help your business.
If I could give it no stars, I would. Â My friend and I went here on Sept 24, 2011. Â We arrived at 4:25pm and ordered 2 Magner's Irish Ciders, 2 waters, nachos and 2 soups. After 15 minutes, our drinks finally made it to the table. Â By 5:35pm, our food was nowhere to be seen and we had to leave to go to an event that had started at 5:30pm. Â We had to go to the event hungry. Â
The place was not busy at the time and other diners who arrived after us were finished eating their meals by the time we got up and left. Â Our waitress had the time to clean the table next to us while we were waiting for our food but when I tried to get her attention to ask if our food was coming out after waiting for 30 minutes, she turned around and walked away. Â There was another table of 2 women who were complaining about the same waitress because they were waiting for an eternity to get their check. Â
I am always polite when I go out to eat because I have waited tables in the past. Â I know it is a difficult job. Â But never in my life has a server just completely forgotten to bring out my order. Â A main part of your job is to bring out the food people order. Â If you can't even manage to do that, you are in the wrong job. Â
On the plus side, I like the decor and the vibe in there. Â If we would have ACTUALLY been able to eat, I bet we would have enjoyed ourselves.
I've been a regular here for years and I find this place very comfortable and welcoming.
They pour a proper Guinness and have a decent whisky selection.
However, the food is serviceable but used to be a lot better. I never understood them serving their fish and chips wrapped in newspaper which steams everything making to breading on the fish soft and the fries limp. Also, they used to put lamb (correctly) in the Shepherd's Pie but now its beef and they changed the name to Country Pie or something like that. Their burger is pretty much the way to go.
The staff is great and will keep you in Guinness and whisky for as long as you want.
Such an awesome place to eat, super cozy atmosphere with classic Irish pub food.
The menu has something for everybody but isn't over complicated. The prices are fair and the food is delicious. Everyone in my group got something different and all were very happy with what they chose. The house made ketchup was amazing.
Our waitress, Lindsey was running the entire bar and tending to all the tables by herself when we arrived but was still very attentive and never came across as flustered or stressed.
My family and I will definitely be back often.
Classic Irish bar with a classic Irish feel. The damn bartender we had was actually from Ireland. I had the corned beef sandwich that was incredible. I was always under the impression that corned beef was always going to be dry, but this was the juciest corned beef I have ever eaten. They have homemade ketchup they serve in a Mason jar with a spoon.
The biggest plus? They actually know how to PROPERLY pour a draught Guinness. Â I love this place and will assuredly be returning as often as possible.
Alright I'd like to preface this by saying: This is not the place to go if you're looking to find a girl/guy to buy a drink and bring home. Most of the patrons here have some measure of class. If you're going to order fish, realize that fish isn't always perfect unless you're ordering it at a fish restaurant and even then who knows and beef stew is bland, it's like saying "Oh, that wonder bread was too bland".
I've been here several times and had great fun. I've only had the food once of the five or so times I've been, but the corned beef sandwich was really simple and really good and the fries were fresh and hot. I also like that their Guinness doesn't taste stale. As far as the price goes, it's not that bad. It seems a lot of people on here are saying it's expensive, but a friend and I had a total of 2 sandwiches and 6 beers and it was under 50 bucks. Perhaps I've spent a little too much time in Boston, but that's not bad given the quality of the food.
The service has been great every time I've been and I haven't had to wait for anything except the Guinness to settle. Friendly bartenders and waitresses here.
Why four stars and not five? Well, there is the issue of the bathroom, I've only been on a super busy night once and I'm not sure I even used it but I know it only fits one person and I can see how that would be frustrating after a few pints. I also hoped they had Sam Adams Octoberfest (even though it's a bit early) but some other bars do, so instead I ordered a Pumpkinhead to start the night and they decided to put cinnamon/sugar on the rim of the glass without asking whether I wanted it. It honestly tasted alright, but it's beer sacrilege to do that, especially without permission. Might seem like a minor thing, but given the fact that there are self proclaimed beer poobahs around every corner (like Mr. Pipes-taint), they should ask before they ruin a repeat customer.
I'm prefacing this by saying I've only been to the downstairs bar. I can't speak for the restaurant portion upstairs.
The bar's overpriced. I don't mind dank, dingy, underground pubs. I like them. But not when I need to pay 5$ for something they call "Bar Vodka".
Seriously. This stuff was horrible. Smelled like rubbing alcohol. It was supposed to be a joke shot for all of us, until I found out it costs as much as a good shot in Boston. Seriously. It's Haverhill and it's "Bar Vodka". Charge appropriately.
That's just an example. The beer's pricy too. Every drink is.
The bathroom? A literal bathroom with one toilet. The GUY'S bathroom had a line.
Now, in terms of popularity, well... they have live bands and a good amount of cougars show up. Not too many single girls from what I saw, the girls all had dates here. But if you want a 40 year old divorcee to take home, hit this place up.
One thing, the Guinness Martini is tasty. Not much Guinness in it, but it's good for a novelty. +1 star for that.
Crap place. Not going unless forced to.
Unfortunately, Peddler's Daughter has reworked their menu removing a couple of good items (the onion rings and the scotch eggs I mentioned in the previous review) and added a variety of crap you'd never find in a pub in Ireland and can find in any chain restaurant in the States.
For the first time in a visit there, we were seated on the side opposite the bar where its so dimly lit, even in the middle of the day, we were using the light of our cellphones to see the menu. The table of our booth was so small we could barely fit our four entrees on it. Condensation from the air ducting dripped alongside our table. Maybe we should have thought of it as a water feature or something?
Two people ordered the fish and chips which is served with their home made ketchup and the third person ordered the meatloaf which had a really nice presentation. It looked good enough to where I'd consider ordering it if I were to go back again. I ordered the cheeseburger which was cooked medium rare as requested but fell completely apart after one bite. The sweet potato french fries were decent but flimsy.
The excitement of Peddler's for me came with the authenticity and now that it's gone, I don't know that I have a need to go back. Looks like I'm driving to Salem, MA for scotch eggs at The Old Spot.
Well, let me tell ya lads and ladies, this pub has the goods!
I have been there many a night listening to "EJ Ouellette & Crazy Maggy" Rockin the Bow (<a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.myspace.com%2Fejocm&s=b81aa2ea53f53e38ed3c8802ee9602e190e83bb41f29baf644514fca8ea89515" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://www.myspace.com/e…</a>) and enjoying the fine beers and food. You will get quick service and the food is awesome!
There is something special about their fish and chips, they come in newspaper and the catsup is truly unique and tasty! (I have often thought that it would be good just eating it straight, but since french fries are the chosen catsup delivery system, who am I to buck the system?)
Besides, they make fries that perfect crispy way that makes them irresistible! And if they have Rosemary Chicken on special, give it a try, it won't disappoint.
Definitely make it there on a Friday night for a fun evening with friends. Bring some but, the place is friendly and you can get to know folks if you are new in town.
Great food, nice ambiance and a place where even the Mayor of the city can be caught once in a while grabbing lunch!
If you're looking for a mean corned beef sandwich, the Peddler's Daughter is your place! Â Located in Haverhill's old mill district, it's a breath of fresh Irish air in a cramped basement atmosphere. Â The small tables are close and cozily lit with candles. Live (often) Irish entertainment is served up on Saturday evenings.
Known as a watering hole for college kids and locals alike, the Ped offers much more than booze and average pub food. Â The menu is varied and offers traditional Irish fare that is far better than food from the Emerald Isle.
The corned beef sandwich is served on fresh, soft bread with stone-ground mustard. Â It is OUT OF THIS WORLD! Â Get the sweet potato fries and homemade ketchup for a side and you'll be happy you did. Â The bangers and mashed are great, too.
Avoid the Ped on Thursday - Saturday nights after 10pm (the kitchen is closed by then, anyway) when the place fills up with the drinking crowd.
My sister & I were here for a late lunch, around 2 on a Friday afternoon, and except for a few people at the bar, it was empty. Â We sat in a booth at the bar (there is an area with all tables), and the friendly bartender doubled as our server. Â We both enjoyed our food, but thought the fries got have been crisper. Â I had the chicken sandwich, which was tasty, with sweet potato fries. Â The fries were flavorful, but needed to be crispier. Â My sister had the fish & chips, which comes wrapped in newspaper. Â The fried fish was good, but neither one of us loved the regular fries. Â I thought they did not have much flavor and could have been crispier as well. Â There was Irish music playing, sports on the flatscreen TV, and we liked all the exposed wood & wooden tables & booths. Â The bathrooms were warm & clean. Â It looks like it would be fun at night.
Review Source:Standard Irish bar.
Tons of beers on tap. Â The fish and chips and the beef stew are both known to be excellent and consistent. Â Packed and loud at night. Â
Been here a few times and even yesterday when we went in for some apps there was still the loud woman in the bar. Â Guess it's loud during the day too...
I rate The Peds four stars on the basis of the fact that it's a straight bar in Haverhill that I find tolerable. If we were talking about a gay joint or somewhere in Boston, the rating would be completely different. If you aren't familiar with Haverhill nightlife and what I mean by the above explanation, then you're lucky.
This basement bar is usually very busy and quite crowded. But not crowded in the typical sense of other Haverhill bars (oh, is that a switchblade in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?).
The staff is friendly enough, although busy trying to master the drunk clientele foaming at the mouth for more booze. There is ZERO standing room in some areas but if you maneuver by the drunk sluts and Gypsy Bar dropout yah-doodz, you'll find places to sit or stand comfortably.
Bring friends. You'll want to take turns venturing over to the bar for drink orders...because it's a long, painful trek that rivals the Oregon Trail.
This is another one of those lunch places where some of us from the office go. Â It's far enough away that we can talk without running into anyone, but not so far that we have to rush through lunch to get back on time. Â The food has always been good. Â Some people love the homemade ketchup or the sweet potato fries, I usually go for a burger or fish & chips. Â The place does look like an Irish pub inside and many of the people seem to know each other, but I don't know them so it doesn't matter to me. Â Bottom line: Â Decent food and cool atmosphere.
Review Source:Locals call it "Peds". And they frequent it so much so that every time I bring friends from out of town, I can tell that they feel completely annoyed by the "everyone knows everyone" vibe. Who likes being an outsider?
That being said, the crowd is not very diverse at all. Mostly Haverhill people, though all ages are represented depending on the time of day or night that you go. Lunch -- local workers and an occasional weirdo or bum. Dinner -- parents, reputable older folks. Evening -- older and middle aged folks having fun and younger crowd trickling in. Night -- all  young kids, some underage, all taking way too long in the bathroom.
The beers, my boyfriend say, taste dirty in that the lines they are poured through are probably not often cleaned. My palate is not that advanced when it comes to beer, but I take his word for it. They have Widmer, my favorite beer on tap most of the time, but other than that the selections aren't special. Guiness, Magners, Stella, and a 'Peddler's brew" that is rumored to be PBR.
The food isn't great. I used to love the corned beef sandwich. I have friends that love the potato leek soup. I've heard that the fries are good if you like fries. The last time  I ate there I just wasn't overwhelmed, and I also wasn't bombed so it probably wasn't tasting as good as it did in times past.
Bottom line, this is THE small town bar you hear about and keep out of. When I first came of age, I went here a lot. It was fun seeing everyone from the city in one place... for about a week. The same people, the same dramas, the same sour bartenders night after night or weekend after weekend really gets old.
My advice: save your money, time, and reputation-- go to the Tap.
Oh yes, and a few weeks ago an acquaintence of mine (female) was attacked while leaving here with two girlfriends. The attacker was homeless and apparently looking for money, but did not hesitate punching a young girl in the face.
I have been to Ireland twice and this looks just like one of the pubs there. Â The atmosphere brought back memories of Ireland. Â We went the early in the after and for a while we were the only patron. Â It was easy to see the food was all home made and was delicious. Â This is a definite return to eat place
Review Source:From the kitsch on the walls to the food on the menu, this place is 100% Irish. Didn't  have the greatest time there, as they don't take reservations and happened to have a party of 30 that was there (and took up probably 3/4 of the restaurant) so we ended up waiting for an hour or so, but the food itself was great.
You can tell the fries are homemade, and the pub food is exactly that--good pub food. When we got there around 7:15pm, it was mostly older couples, a few families; by nine, it had transformed into an almost completely 20-something crowd. The band was from Ireland and played all the traditional Irish songs, with some  twists (Pink Floyd!) and by the time we left it was a packed place with barely room to move around the bar.
My review would have been higher, but though we liked our (Irish) waitress a lot, we were misheard on probably no less than three requests, had a problem with the bill (quickly and cheerfully resolved) and sometimes had to wait forever for service, especially as the night wore on. If you're looking for a great night out with friends, I'd totally recommend the Peddlers Daughter on a Friday night for great atmosphere & cheap fare (about 7-8$ for pub food, 13-15$ for a full meal) and a good variety of on-tap beer. However, if you're looking to have a quieter dinner in an authentic Irish restaurant, I would recommend it any other time than Friday night...and get there early!!
