I've always been a fan of Pizza Man...however...tonight the experience negated the good food. Â My main issue this evening was the fact that it took them 45 minutes to bring out a 14" thin crust pepperoni pizza. They were not very busy, but were obviously understaffed and overwhelmed.
The pizza was as good as ever, but they need to remember that they are not the only privately owned pizza joint in the area anymore -- their service needs to be excellent if they want to keep their customers from going to the competitors.
Pulled buffet put out new
Great salad bar
7 different pizzas out at one time. Â Most were thin crust and relish. Â I believe a cheese mix with little or no provel. Â I like provel and this pizza was still good.
For a pizza place it has a nice decor. Â There is a video game room with a door for kids to play. Â
Pricing is different now. Â 5.99 for buffet and drink is separate. Â The pie prices are in line with other pizza places.
They could use beer. Â Not to be a alcoholic but beer and pizza go together. Â If they had beer this place is 5 stars.
Pizza Man has great pizza! The thin-crust pizza is wonderful, with a crispy delicious crust and good sauce and toppings. My favorite part is the cheese; it seems like a really good, quality 100% mozzarella. I don't know what brand it is or where they get it, but it's fabulous. (I'm not originally from St. Louis, so while I enjoy St. Louis-style thin crust, I've never really enjoyed provel from That Other Place...gimme mozzarella!) The pizza always tastes fresh and never greasy. Of course, they also have thick-crust and Chicago-style, but the real standout is the thin-crust. (I've actually not had the Chicago-style, but the thick-crust is very good.)
The dinner buffet is a good deal -- it's about $8.50 or so -- and you can find salad, many kinds of pizza, pasta, sandwiches, and dessert. The staff is friendly, the atmosphere is cozy and clean, and the Chandler family is well-known for supporting the community, so I'm happy to spend my money locally to support them.
The only complaint I have is that their iced tea is terrible and weak. Oh well, I don't really go there for the tea anyway! The pizza is also a bit on the pricey side, but it's so well-made with good quality ingredients that I feel it's worth it. They often have $20 Groupons for $10, too, so that's a great deal. If you ever see that Groupon and you've never been to Pizza Man, you really should give it a try.
Pizza Man is a pretty tasty local pizza place. Since it's Friday and the only smart idea on a Friday night is to order pizza and play video games, my friend and I decided to order Pizza Man. What's great about Pizza Man is that if you're not a huge fan of pizza, there are lots of different options to try. There are pastas, sandwiches, and even gyros! Also, pricing at Pizza Man is mostly reasonable for pizza.
My friend and I ordered the Chicago Stuffed pizza and were not floored with the pizza, but it was still pretty delicious. One reason it didn't really blow our socks off was because we ordered a Chicago style pizza, assuming we were going to get a real Chicago style pizza. When the pizza came it was comparable to just a run-of-the-mill thick crust pizza (not even deep dish status!). Nevertheless, the pizza was still pretty yummy and I'd probably order Pizza Man again.

manager was a jerk, he seemed to only care about these older people that were there. Had a few question about their pizza because I had never been there before and he just stared me in the face and told me hiss pizza was the best... I responded with ok that's not what I asked. Anyway the pizza was gross. Cheese and crust were dried out. How can someone mess up a pepperoni pizza? next time I will stick with what I know ....Imo's
Review Source:The service and quality have been going down hill here for awhile. I've been holding out on updating this review hoping it gets better. Tonight, though, was the final straw. We used the on-line ordering system to order two sandwiches and bread sticks. The on-line system allows you to customize your order by adding or deleting ingredients. When we received our order it was completely wrong. Even if it were right, I still would not have eaten it as it was burnt. Both sandwiches looked as though they had been left in the oven. The salami was black! The bread sticks we received were cold, hard, and really had no flavor.
My second complaint is the delivery service. The on-line system says the average delivery time is 20 minutes. Then you get an email that states the delivery time is 30 minutes. They actually average around an hour. I've even tried calling in an order and then going in to pick it up. It is never ready on time and I usually spend another 20 minutes waiting. I called tonight to complain about the order and the person who answered the phone only said they would have the owner call me tomorrow. He didn't offer to fix the sandwiches. We'll see what happens when/if the owner calls.
I've eaten at this restaurant many times, coming mostly on Friday afternoon for their famous lunch buffet. Â Actually, I've never been there and not ordered the buffet, so this will review will be focused on the buffet.
I'm a pizza lover and I've worked at two pizza joints in the past, so I can spot a good pizza place when one comes around. Â Their pizza buffet is top-notch, complete with a full salad bar, dessert pizza, and even portions of sub sandwiches. Â For those of you from the northern portion of this great state, be warned: they serve St.Louis-style thin crust pizza here. Â Unlike you Chicagoans, we do not enjoy pizza topped with multiple layers of artery-clogging meat and cheese on a crust that's as thick as a laptop.
One aspect of Pizza Man is Troy that makes it stand out is its atmosphere. Â It has a living room feel to it, they often play Sinatra music, and unlike every other dine-in pizza place I've been to in the area, I wouldn't be ashamed to bring a date here. Â Also, they serve you your drink. Â How cool it that? Â You ask for the buffet up front, get your food, and voila, your drink is waiting for you when you get to your seat. Â They also refill your drink for you! Â I've never been to a pizza buffet that offers any level of service, so this impresses me.
A review would not be complete without mentioning some negative things, minor though they may be. Â The buffet is a bit more expensive than you might expect, but you do have to pay for quality. Â To my recollection, it's around $8.00 a plate for the buffet, not cheap, but not prohibitively expensive. Â A soda comes with the buffet, which is a little strange. Â You cannot make your total cheaper by ordering water; you will be charged the same flat price. Â Another annoyance is that the pizza buffet is simply not big enough when they are busy. Â They end up placing the pizzas on top of the warmers (I guess that's better than just leaving them out), but they get cold quickly. Â I'm also guessing that this violates the health code is some way - there's a reason that restaurant buffets have a sneeze guard.
Four stars for Pizza Man! Â If they increased the size of their buffet to allow more pizzas and charged separately for a soda, I would give them five.
I like The Pizza Man a lot, and I'm going to give it 5 stars because it's a great little family restaurant in Troy, IL that is a big part of the community there. But, be warned -- The Pizza Man offers a thin crust pizza with a cornmeal crust that is very popular in central Illinois, but which is not for everyone. (If you have ever had Monical's Pizza in Illinois, it's EXACTLY the same thing, down to the French Dressing -- Both chains originated from the same group of people.)
For my wife, The Pizza Man is a taste of home. She grew up on Pizza Man and Monical's pizza, and she was the one who taught me to dip the pizza in their excellent French dressing (which you can buy on its own at the front.) The best value is the Tuesday Night family buffet, which is both inexpensive and awesome since you get a chance to eat all sorts of hot foods (including pizza, breadsticks, salad and dessert) along with a few other options. It gets a little crowded, but it's worth the hassle.
This Pizza Man is the largest I've seen, and it's a big part of the Troy community. If you want pizza that's a little different from any other pizza in St. Louis, I suggest giving it a try!
