I hesitate to write this because it's small and so perfect and I kind of don't want too many people to find out about it. Â But it deserves a great review so here goes. Â
It's easy to miss...in a very small house next to the inn. Â Only three small tables downstairs and a few upstairs and a few outside by the river. Â So quaint in a totally un-commercial kind of way.
The food was amazing!!! Â We spent well over twice as much at 1906 in Callicoon last night and this was ten times better. Â The dumplings were out of this world...we kept asking if there was some little Russian grandmother in the kitchen -- seriously it all tasted like the best home cooked dumplings you've ever had. Â We had potato dumplings and these other little ones (see photo) that had meat and chicken in them. Â Couldn't eat them fast enough. Â We ordered borscht and it was by far the BEST borscht I have ever eaten -- the service size was huge and the taste was lip smacking good. Â I never tasted it like this...I think there was clove in it. Â If it's on the menu I recommend it! Â Also worth noting was the "Rob's Puff" which was a caramel pair delicacy in pastry puff. Â Outstanding. Â So worth the calories. Â
The waitress we had was on the job only four days but I never would have known. Â She was great. Â The chef came out to explain some of the dishes to us. Â Great food, great experience. Â Great prices. Â Please don't go there...
The most authentic Eastern European food we've ever tasted outside of Eastern Europe (that we visited during our honey moon). Not the lightest food there is. But good, tasty and comforting. Fantastic for fall and winter weekends. The broths that serve as base for many of these dishes are simply out of tHe world. In other times the cook could have been suspected of witchcraft: how else can one prepare such tasteful liquids that look so simple? Everything else is coked nearly in front of you. Â The owners are a charming couple and the art on the walls is so interesting.
