Best place in New Haven for fries aka frites. They offer a variety of dipping sauces such as maple sriracha, thai peanut, and horseradish. I have had the flatbread pizza, grilled cheese with chicken and bacon, chicken and waffles, and the voodoo burger. No complaints here, I love this place. The beer selection is always changing and if youre poor they have $3 dollar 20oz Narraganssetts after 8pm. Actually I do have one complaint. The are way too many trust fund, trendy hipsters here. You are not unique!!! You all look the same!! Learn how to tip and learn some table manners! Faackin Queaahs!!

Great fries, good burgers. If you are looking for a good burger and beer kinda place in New Haven, this is a good bet. Its a bit cheaper and easier to get into than Prime 16. The service is a bit hit or miss, but its never been horrible. I go to Rudy's all the time.

I came here because I referred by Yelper friends. This place had a small craft beer selection compared to other places in New Haven or even Hartford. The good thing was they had $2 off all draft beer from 2pm until 6:30pm.

I'll come back here because I know this.

I came here with a friend to get some dinner and drinks on a Saturday night. There was room at the bar for us to sit down for just a few minutes and order a couple of beers before our table was ready. They have 'gansett on tap, so that was nice.

My friend and I each ordered burgers. The waitress made a point of asking for a temperature, so I asked for mine medium. The toppings were good, but, unfortunately, the patty came out as vulcanized as the hockey puck in the Rangers game on the TV. ;(

The saving grace was the french fries. They were as great as promised, and the barbeque dipping sauce was really tasty.

All in all, II was disappointed with the burger being way overcooked (2/5 stars), but I would give this place another chance based on the rest of the experience (5/5 stars for the fries and 4/5 for the beer selection).

I'd heard good things about Rudy's brunch. I heard wrong. The service was slow, unpredictable (our waitress forgot half of our order, and I think we'd still be waiting for those cocktails if we hadn't pressed the busboy three times), and just plain sloppy. The food wasn't very good either - soggy taters, overcooked eggs (how do you mess up eggs???), and coffee that came without sugar (our waitress twice tried to pour regular into my wife's decaf mug) or heat. I still like Rudy's for drinks and burgers. But not a good spot for brunch, contrary to the rumors.

Rudy's is definitely a college town, late night eats place but go there anytime and you'll find something interesting on the menu.

But first, start with the Belgian frites.  That's the real reason you come here and they don't disappoint.

Now, are they as good as the famous Pommes Frites in NYC?  No, but that doesn't mean they aren't good.  I think Rudy's frites aren't as light inside as the other guys but they are still very good.  And I like the diverse selection of dipping sauces available.

You get one choice with your meal, if you get one of their sandwiches, and the others are 75 cents apiece.  I tried four different flavors:  maple Sriacha, samurai, maytag blue cheese and mango mania.  I liked all except for mango which was a bit too sweet.

Also beware that if you try multiple sauces you will fill up because most of the flavors are mixed with a Belgian mayo base.  It gets heavy quickly.

My dining partner had a basic burger that was very good and I will go back to try one of their burger variations of my own but on this visit I was intrigued by the Brisket Banh Mi.

If you like Banh Mi you'll probably like this sandwich.  It had tender cuts of brisket with just enough fat left on for good flavor along with pickled jalapeños, cucumber, carrot, sesame aioli spread and served on a soft baguette.  Outstanding and very tasty.

Rudy's is a big winner in a big college town with a well deserved reputation earned over many years in New Haven.

    Rudy's is pretty darn good.

While, for some reason, I never tried it when it was in it's original location, I come to the new location around once a week. It's great people watching....not to mention great frites! The beer selection is definitely impressive. Seating can be a little hard to find on a Friday or Saturday night...but hey, who cares? Good fries, good beers and good friends in a chill atmosphere...what else do you need?

How does a place manage to fail so hard on an order of fries to go?

I was showing a friend around New Haven and we passed Rudy's, noting that their fries are kind of a New Haven institution and are worth trying if you're itching for them.

It was around 4:30 on a Sunday, so the space was pretty empty with a couple folks at the bar, and one table occupied.

We placed our order (regular pomme frittes with a couple of sauces), and waited, and waited, and waited for about 15 minutes.  Our order comes out, we leave cash for the fries plus a tip and head out, taking the fries out of the bag a few feet from the entrance to eat and walk.

I grimaced when I saw the fries were in a box, and quickly went to open it so the steam escaping from the fresh fried food didn't quickly obliterate the crisp exterior.

However, my concerns of soggy fries were quickly thrown by the wayside when I found out the fries were not just soggy but cold.  I immediately turned around, went to the bar, waited to get the bartender's attention let them know I wanted a refund.  Done easily enough as the waitress still hadn't picked up the cash and tip on the table.

How you mess up an order of fries during a near-empty happy hour downtime, I do not know but it def't didn't sync up with the menu bragging about how their pomme frittes are fried fresh to order.

If you want a burger and a beer, and you're in New Haven, this is your place.

We rolled up to this place early on a Friday evening, and it was pretty packed, so we sat at the bar to wait for a table.  They have a good selection of draft beer.

We got a table within twenty minutes.  I ordered a New Haven burger (medium rare, of course), which comes with Swiss cheese, bacon, pickles, lettuce, grilled onion, and a house sauce.  It was everything and more than I hoped it would be--pretty close to perfect.

Practically everything on the menu is served with Belgian frites.  They alone are worth the trip.

Went on a Saturday night, the bartender was extremely rude! We ordered the fries, a good choice of sauces, however, the fries were so small, you were barely able to dunk them in the sauces.  I would not go back to Rudy's.

Went to Rudy's yesterday for lunch with some buddies, heard that they have one of the best burgers in the city so I decided to check it out. The place is very divey, old beer signs all over the bar, cool decor.

The waitress was not very inviting, she was very timid. The seating might have been the most uncomfortable I have ever been.

We found out that they were only serving brunch, which was a let down... we wanted burgers! They only had 2 burgers offered during brunch... yet it was 1pm in the afternoon.

The beer selection is pretty good. A lot of micro brews. I ordered a Rogue Dead Guy.

We split the grand fry for the table- it came with 3 sauces.... this was sufficient for the table- i'd recommend the Aioli sauce.

When the burgers came out they were cold and the swiss cheese on the burger was not even melted. I guess it was good, for a cold burger...

BEWARE IT IS EXPENSIVE! 5 of us, 5 burgers with only one beer (rest water) was 100$

With all things considered, I would not go back to Rudy's.

Forget Louis Lunch, or Prime 16, or Shake Shack or any other place you think you may have eaten a "good" burger.  This is the holy grail of burgers.

I was wandering a little more north of my normal lunchtime loop and walking down Howe St for a new place to try, I almost walked right past Rudy's.  There isn't much to draw you in from the outside.

I turned the corner and read the menu and decided to saddle up to the bar and try it out.  The bartender was friendly & inviting, and started telling the story about the food, and the old place, and when they moved..etc... I guess it's a good thing I'd never been to the old place.

I asked for recommendations since the 2lb Moules Frites probably isn't something you want to try and work after eating.  I asked about the Banh Mi, and he said he wasn't really a fan, but only because he's not a fan of brisket.  So i settled on the classic burger with swiss.  Banzai Sauce on the side (sriracha mayo).

The burger was presented as artfully as a burger can be.  The brioche bun was soft, yet sturdy and had a good toast on the inside so that the burger didnt get mushy.  The beef was cooked to a perfect medium rare and was still juicy throughout.  The swiss and aioli complemented the beef.

The bartender passed me a bottle of ketchup after refilling my water, I pushed it back telling him, "It would be sacrilege to put a bottle of ketchup anywhere near this plate."

The frites were delicious, although next to a burger of that level, they become almost an afterthought.  The banzai sauce had just the right amount of spice to complement the fries, and would have been damn tasty on the burger.

I don't understand the bad rap that this places gets in some of the prior reviews, the service is prompt and courteous, they have a slammin' beer selection (although i chose not to partake).  The food is downright godly.  The decor is modern and inviting.  What's not to like?

$11.75 w/ tax for my burger & fries is not a bad deal considering the prices of burgers in the city.  I just wish it was closer than a 9 block walk from my work.

This place has completely changed since it moved. The atmosphere is gone. There is nothing special about Rudy's anymore. So sad.

The frites are totally delicious and they have some solid beer specials at 8. This place is nice, but the normal beer list (belgian-heavy) tends not to appeal to me much. I'd go back with friends, but it's a bit out of my way, and I don't come here on my own.

Good food, cool/funky decor, open space, nice bar area... love that the walls in the bar open up to the sidewalk in the summer. Kinda wish this place was closer to the other downtown venues.

I've had a sandwich from here and also one of the personal pizzas and really enjoyed both. My fav was the frites with the curry dipping sauce. mmmmm. Wide variety of beer. Our waiter was really polite and friendly, can't remember his name.

Great beer selection, usually pretty good music. Depending on the night it can get REALLY busy... I much prefer Rudy's during the summer when they open the windows!

I've seen some decent shows there as well. Usually a safe bet for a week night.

I'm almost certain I came in on a bad night. It was a midweek evening, around say 9pm. I sat down to order dinner in at the bar, but the service took so long getting to me (not super busy, either) that I wound up deciding on a burger and fries for takeout.

Long story short, I got my order around another 30 minutes later. It was hot, no complaints there, but the medium burger was just past well done, so maybe it had been reheated? Anyway, I didn't realize any of this until I got home, which is the main issue. If I had stayed, I probably could've had the burger swapped out - who knows how long that would've taken, but...

Fries were and always are pretty great, for that style. If you like beers, they have a good selection and sometimes some good deals.  I've tried their BLT a few times, and it's always been perfect... But the mediocre reviews I've heard about the burger and grilled cheese ring a lot truer to me now.

If you want a real juicy perfect burger in that area, try O'Sullivans one block back up Chapel towards campus across from the Study Hotel.

If you want better service... Well, there are a LOT of options. Chapel and Howe seems to attract just really slow and/or apathetic crews for some odd reason (see my Miya's review for more on that).

If this place wasn't constantly full of grad students and professors from the Art School and other surrounding halls who loathe to interact with the general student populace, I'm not sure how long it could survive.

Rudy's fries and sauces remind me of Wurstküche in Downtown L.A. and I've been coming here with my friends probably once every few weeks when school's in session. It's a relatively accessible place in terms of price and seating. It does tend to get crowded during high-traffic times such as dinner and the weekends.

Some people have said that Prime 16 has better burgers, but I've only been there once and have not been able to get in since due to their long wait times, so I'd much rather go to Rudy's and just wait 10-15 minutes for a seat and similarly fantastic burger at slightly less-expensive prices. My advice, splurge a little and get the fried egg for $1.50 extra like I do with the Classic Burger. I've had their moules frites and while they were good, they weren't very filling or memorable. For that, I'd still recommend getting one of their burgers. Another item I'd really recommend is the beer-battered cod, which was really delicious and fresh when I ordered it.

That said, I celebrated my birthday here on a Friday night a couple months ago and when I called a week in advance, the restaurant said they didn't do reservations for large groups, unless I wanted to rent the back room for $350, which was a bit ridiculous. Anyway, they suggested that I just come the night of and commandeer whatever open tables were available in the back room, which has no waitstaff filling orders. I planned on having 15-20 folks join, but it turned out over 30 people came. It took a while, but we managed to absorb as many tables and chairs to accommodate our group as possible, splitting us into two parties. I had their take on the Vietnamese banh mi that night and it was pretty decent (the roast beef kimchi sandwich at Atticus is good too). Ordering at the bar and having the food bused out wasn't too much trouble other than folks getting food at various times, often not in the order they were placed. Still, everyone eventually got their food and best of all, since we ordered at the bar and each person paid their own tab, there was no large bill to worry about dividing and there was no possibility for someone to leave us short, which happens frequently with large group meals.

I forget to mention, but I'm allergic to alcohol so while I have no opinion to their beer selection, my friends seem to think it's good, albeit somewhat pricier than other establishments nearby.

Okay, so two hours after I wrote the above review I went to Rudy's for a burger, below is my latest experience:
    1) Walk in the door and was immediately seated (party of two at 6p on a Sat. when the Packers haven't yet started playing the 49'ers).
    2) Get our glasses of water and menus. We already know what we want and order. We receive our napkins and silverware.
    3) My Classic Burger with fried egg (+ Belgian frites with pesto mayo sauce) arrive along with my friend's New Haven Burger.
    4) Here's the good part: I grab it with both my hands and try to put it in my mouth, but even as I unhinge my jaw it doesn't fit! Then it starts dripping all over my mouth and hands and when I finally wrap my mouth around it, I feel like I'm going to gag... Seriously, I've had plenty before and this is the first time this has happened. Perhaps those I've had in the past were smaller?
    5) I lick my fingers with a smile. The napkin on my lap is a mess and I think my leg has fallen asleep. We get the bill (20% tip!) and I go wash up in the restroom.
    6) Now I'm going to nap.

this a legit bar its even my favorite rilly doe

JUST ONE THING DOE - wtf rudy's increase your BRUNCH game. gimme like all u can drink mimosas or bloody maries for like 8 ducats please U need to concoct a signature bloody mary. Put some bacon or something in there. Get it all spicy and shnit. I'd drink it. We'd all drink it. If u liking these ideas already, I might suggest something even more real: Do a bottomless mimosa deal. Talking flat-fee all you can drink. Make it like part of the menu. Oh you want a burger for 12 bucks? Make it 20 and you get mad dranks.

OK so y is this the most rare of moves? Because no one in new haven does it. There is a dichotomy between lunch and breffast.we all no "brunch" really means is a heuvos rancheros added to a normal lunch meal, but you put some unlimited mimosa up on that menu? Bingo bango, brunch. Oh, a burger doesn't seem breffassy enough to you? Have a bloody mary, boom, brunch.

Box 63 has no idea what they doing. I think they used to have an all you can drink special but frankly it was practical because you have to be drunk to enjoy their food. People are always like "go to the Pantry" and I'm like "no b  thats too far away and plus I told you I aint into the diner-style breffas scene." Someone telling me to go to east haven an i don't even know what that is. Just do brunch better rudy's pls.

I've only been to the new Rudy's a few times, usually soley on the suggestions of others. I'm a purist: I preferred the dive bar ambiance that is now a thing of the past at the new location. Maybe that's what I find confusing: the new place doesn't seem to have that much substance or soul to me. I find the seating areas awkward and the decor to be haphazard.
I haven't tried the food. I had some shots of vodka here once that were horrible in comparison to the vodka I had just consumed at Elm Bar. I went to trivia night once also and that was fun, though I think my team managed to come in dead last, though that's not Rudy's fault, rather the stupidity and/or drunkeness of myself and my teammates.
The beer selection is the main standout, and in my opinion, the only reason to come to Rudy's. I have had a few good porters and stouts on tap, and those are my thing when it comes to beer. Recently I had a winter ale, Six Point I believe, that was on special for $4 a pint, and it was really great. I had two actually.
It's not a bad place to meet friends. It's middle of the road between classy and trashy, though I think it is still confused in it's identity which makes me not really love the place. I'd rather have a more extreme reaction to it. Will I be back? Yes, but only for an occasional beer or two. I don't prefer it enough to consider becoming a regular there.

How much slack do you cut one of the few restaurants in town open during a hurricane?  Quite a bit, but still....  I've been to the "new" Rudy's several times.  I like the food, the atmosphere, and usually, the servers.  This time not so much.

Burgers and frites are always good, but this time I ordered bánh mì, something I have never seen on any menu in Connecticut.  It  was unlike any I've ever had anywhere else, essentially a massive slab of brisket on a baguette, topped with some sliced cucumbers and shredded carrots.  The only discernible flavor was that of the meat, everything else was merely decoration.

Earlier Irene F wrote that "the staff has become douchier" since the move to the new location.  I had not experienced that in previous visits, but this time, we certainly did. Our original bartenter-server was great, efficiently moving between the bar and the tables.  Unfortunately, we were there during a shift change and she left shortly after delivering our drinks and putting in our order.  From that point on were were completely on our own.  By this point there were no more than six people in the place.  Nevertheless, the bartender, apparently a back-up named Paul, spent all his time horsing around with a couple of his friends at the end of the bar.  Since it was clear he wasn't coming  to us, we went up to the bar for another round of drinks, and then to get the check.  The check folder, by the way, was thrown at me without a word, picked up without a word, and the receipt thrown back without a word.

I left a $6 on a $65.00 check and spoke to the owner on the way out.  I hope that sent a message to Paul.   In case it didn't, this review should.

Reviewing Rudy's solely on its own merits, I might give this place 4 stars. The food is decent (if a bit pricey), the fries are great, and they have a strong beer selection that's matched only by Cask Republic in the New Haven area.

But the unfortunate thing is that Rudy's was a dive bar before it moved to the new location, and now it's basically like any other place on Crown Street that caters to a relatively upscale crowd (Yale vs. town, to put it another way). It was nice having a true dive bar in town, and without Rudy's, the options are slim. If anything, the bar that took over its old location (Elm City) has more fidelity to the old concept. The new Rudy's is basically Cask Republic II.

I would come back here to drink but I was not impressed by the food.

+ 1 star automatically for having Hitachino for $8, my fav beer ever that is super hard to find and is $11 at Cask Republic. The selection for beers on tap was pretty good as well.

We ordered the hummus plate, the frites with the chipotle sauce, and the cubano sliders. The best app was the hummus plate, but they give you WAY more than you want to eat and way more than can fit on the 8 slices of pita, how about you guys do not overfill the plate and charge less instead of making a big waste as that stuff has to all be eaten fresh! The roasted eggplant and cucumber/tomato mixture on there to add to the pita bread wasn't bad either.

The cubano sliders which I was really excited for were a major disappointment. My first bite was actually magical because I got just the right amount of everything but after that it was disappointing. Too much bun, and then when I would get a whole piece of pork it was so spicy I couldn't taste anything else. Plus they give you 3 sliders for 10 bucks, It should be 4 at least at that price.

The frites which they are known for didn't really excite me either, and I love anything made with potatoes. It just tasted like the homefries my grandmother would make for breakfast with leftover restaurant french fries from the day before. Super crispy, and the chipotle sauce was nothing special as well.

They saved themselves from a 2 star review by having hitachino but I don't think I will be eating here again.

Since the move, the drinks have gotten pricer, the staff has become douchier, and the food is REALLY, really salty (in a bad way, not in the way where it's supposed to be salty enough so you drink more). The food really sucks here but the frites are still the same so at least they still have that.

Rudy's used to cater to gutter punks and poor townies. It used to be THE dive to see and be seen. The atmosphere was just so alive.

Before the move it was all "Fuck Yale!" and after the move it's like "Here, Yale, have a seat! We love you now!"

If you need me, I'll be at Elm Bar with all the other derelicts.

**Edit: Someone totally shat on Rudy's dance floor. Ew!!

It's true that the new Rudy's is missing the atmosphere the old joint created throughout the years (and that it's colorful matinee crowd), but the new Rudy's is excellent. It's slowly building up its new cred.

Beer selection is very good and the waiters really know their stuff, so they can help you decide or simply get acquainted with it. Food menu is far better than it was at the old place. Fries are still there (although they charge now for their sauces -I don't remember it being that way before-). Bucket of mussels is huge and delicious. Wings, burgers and the roasted beet salad are always my top choices.

    I don't know...I had a "fine" experience here.

My husband had some pretty decent pancakes...

I had a fried egg sandwich (hard to mess up)....

I came for the frites! And they were pretty good...they didn't blow me away or anything, though. We ordered a large (we were HUNGRY!!), and it came with a choice of three dipping sauces, which were good, but the sauce quantity was a bit stingy, as in, it covered about three large fries before it was gone.

AND....our server seemed a little cranky. And honestly, it smelled a little funky in the place. Can't really identify the sour-ish smell/

For the most part, I'm not a super-picky person, but I just didn't have a great experience here.

Dudes...cool your jets. They're just fries.

The new location is a lot better than the old one. It's a little bigger, and it's not right across from Alpha Delta, so it's much easier to resist your inevitable Wenzel temptation. Other than that, not much is different. The bartenders are still pretty cool, and the craft beers aren't bad. A good horse to have in the stable.

I was not a Elm City Native at the time of the original Rudy's, so I can't speak to its dive-y charm.

However, I have been to the New Rudy's (as people seem to refer to it) several times and I have generally had a good time.

They have a pretty varied list of beers on tap, including a fair number of Belgians, which I admit I am partial to.  Furthermore, they have a generous happy hour and at least one beer on special each night after 8 pm.

The crowd there is a good mix of Yale grad students, hipsters, and neighborhood-types out having a good time.  All of the staff are really friendly.

The food is good, but not great.  Somebody recommended the burger, and I enjoyed it, but it's no Prime 16 burger.  The Belgian frites with Samurai sauce, on the other hand, are pretty great.  I highly recommend getting a larger sampler of the frites with a few different sauces.

Overall I'd say I gave it a few extra points for having drink specials, good beer selection, and an overall friendly vibe, despite getting away from its roots as a dive bar.

I moved to Howe St this year (sorry to leave you, East Rock). Rudy's is on the corner, which is fine.

There's no point talking about the old Rudy's because this is not that in the least.

Brunch is very good here. Maybe too big, but very good.

The beer selection is good and the staff can surprise one by being competent quite often. The bar tenders, however, are socially inept, truly useless staff members. I even called once, just to find out when trivia started, and the bartender said "check the facebook page, I just pour the drinks." and hung up. Thanks for asking someone for me, jackass. It was 3pm, he wasn't exactly swamped.

The good thing is, it's a relief from Sullivan's without being as expensive as the Study, which are the other two options within two blocks. The food is pretty good, but I don't know if it's my bad luck or what, but they're always out of the best-sounding dipping sauces.

Go for brunch, go for late night drinks. But don't go for atmosphere, Rudy's left it all on Elm St during the move ... whoops!

I was not a fan of the fried chicken entree or the chili. The fried chicken came out black and burnt. I'm not sure why they even served it. I don't even think they apologized, but I did get a new order. It was pretty awful. The chili wasn't any better. It was super spicy which I don't mind, I did mind the strong smokey burnt flavor.
The service was just okay, it wasn't the wait staff's fault that they were understaffed and extremely slow to getting around to all of their tables. It was a busy night.

I was not a fan of the old Rudy's.  Everyone was always like, "I love Rudy's- it's such a shithole!"  I, however, am not a fan of shitholes and don't really understand the appeal of a bar that's known for being a shithole.  Luckily, the new Rudy's is very different!  It's cleaner, has a bigger menu and a better beer selection (yay Kwak!)  Frites are still just as tasty and everything I've had there has been delicious.

I'm not sure if they'll be able to keep the old Rudy's crowd, or if they even want to.  The back area where bands play is small and disastrously laid out, so it will be interesting to see what happens.  Hopefully I won't have a beer land and explode on my table because some drunkard chucked it randomly into the air.  When that happened at the old Rudy's people were like, "Haha- what an awesome crazy shithole this is!"  I have a feeling that wouldn't be tolerated at the new Rudy's (in the dining room anyway), and I appreciate that.

If I still lived in Connecticut, I would keep coming back to Rudy's until all of the glorious dipping sauces had graced my tongue.

Good: The fries were wonderful, yes, but fries are really just a vehicle for the dips. The burger was surprisingly good. The bacon on my cheeseburger was great-- most places skimp on the bacon, relying on its' flavor and ignoring the texture. If you're putting bacon on a burger, it should be edible on its' own. Bacon. Bacon. Meat. The beer selection was better than most bars. It was empty at 5:00 pm, which is when I eat because I am like your grandma.

Bad: I guess the table by the window was a little drafty. If this place were crowded, I could see it being scene central. Can't say that from experience, though.

Look, we've all had burgers at a bar.  They are usually greasy and hit the spot just right when paired with a beer.

But Rudy's burgers are something different.  Their beef is seasoned perfectly, and juicy all the way through.  Throw in some fries or frites or whatever the hell they care to call them, with one of their awesome dipping sauces (am personally a fan of the Samurai) and you've got some of the best burgers around.

Plus, look for their deals on certain drafts, and you've got yourself a great night.

Rudy's is the quintessential bar. I'm not a bar drinker. Hell, I can't even drink more than a sip of beer before I'm stone drunk (something about not having the gene to process alcohol; damn asian genes).  But when a friend has had a bad day at work and needs a drink, that's where I take him.

Fantastic frites. Ohmigosh, great great frites. And more sauces than you could imagine. Wonderful, wonderful sauces.

So I sit in the nice dark, cool seats,  nurse my diet coke, eat way too many frites and listen to my pal spill his heart out.  What could be better?

This is the bar of bars.

p.s. They don't take credit cards, but there are plenty of ATMs in the neighborhood.

The frites here are great, the beer selection is varied but the best part- the entertainment. And no I am not talking about the bands, I am talking good old fashioned people watching.

I was here one night with a group of friends when we were glued to two girls dancing on the "stage". They grabbed pictures off of the wall and began stomping on them with their bare feet. Then one started bleeding. Yeah- so that's the type of entertainment I am talking about. You can't find that at Barcelona!

    Wait. I'm confused.

These frites are nothing like other double-fried Belgian-style frites I've had (in the US - I've never been to Belgium). Usually they are cut like string fries? And soft? And dark?

These are quite stiff and crisp and they taste a lot like McDonald's fries from, oh, twenty years ago when they still fried them in clothing starch (or whatever, if you're old enough you remember this rumor) and beef fat. They are thicker cut than McDonald's and  I don't think Rudy's uses either beef fat or clothing starch, but you can ask. So they are delicious but (a) not what I expected and (b) I don't actually enjoy fries that much. And I wasn't wild about the simple aioli I got with them; maybe they do the more elaborate sauces better?

Now *you're* confused - why the 3 stars?

The beer was a great deal and the atmosphere was perfect. Not too loud, not too empty, not too local, not too Yale, not too indoors, not too outdoors, older folks, young people. We were there in early evening and watched a band arrive. There was a dog outside. We watched baseball and the Tour de France. The staff is friendly and low-key and I'm sure they would talk to you about the fries (which, for all I know, are more authentically Belgian than what I had in mind) if you did ask.

Also, this place is near my house (and in a good central location, generally) and I feel strongly about not drinking and driving. But the burgers are definitely not to my taste.

    Very cool place.
Crowd's neat, with lots of different types of people hanging out.
Bartender is friendly but not over friendly.
As everybody else already mentioned, fries are good, but their dipping sauces are truly impressive. I've never seen so many different kinds of sauces offered for fries. I liked their Samurai sauce, which was full of spice and  kick! My husband liked the Curry sauce. I guess all that fat is good for soaking up beer to make a great combo.

Rudy's is your typical punk rock attitude dive bar.

They have pitchers of Schaefer for $6, the best frites you will find anywhere in CT, dare I say New England, and without question the awesomest (that's right, awesomest) juke box in New Haven.

Needless to say, I love it there.

First of all, the frites. Indisputably the best fries in the area. They make them just like real Belgians do, and offer a ton of dipping sauces to choose from. My personal favorite is double dipping each frite in Belgian mayo and curry ketchup. If you want more than that (and i'm not sure why you would) their other food is simple, reasonably priced, and satisfying.

They also have a selection of good bottled beers to choose from in addition to the aforementioned $6 pitchers of Schaefer, such as Leffe and Anchor Steam.

Plus, they have seating outside, if you happen to be lucky enough to snag it before everyone else does.

    **UPDATE**

They no longer have Schaefer on draft. Sadly. Their frites are still great, but Caseus' may be better (but they don't have all the sauces). They also have a digital jukebox now, but it still rocks. The crowd is now decidedly hipster.
