We have been to the Sal's in Ipswich and love their pizza - what the hell happened - did you lose the recipe in the 4 mile trip to Georgetown? Â Horrible first (and possibly last) experience at the new Sal's in Georgetown. Â The buffalo chicken pizza had neither buffalo sauce or chicken in any amount and was overcooked such that it was all dried out - inedible. Â The green pepper pizza was better but had hardly any peppers and was overcooked to a lesser degree than the buffalo. Â I understand that there might be growing pains, but not putting toppings on and/or burning pizza sounds like common sense to me. Â Borrow some people from the Ipswich location before you ruin your reputation.
Review Source:Sal's is our first choice for pizza even though we are in Boxford and there are many options that are more convenient. Â We love the oversized pizza - the crust and sauce is delicious and it is not greasy like many other pizza stores. Â The greek salad is relatively large, love the dressing. Â I'm not fond of the combination of black olives and greek olives, but the greeks are plentiful so no real harm. Â It does not come with a slice of pita bread - this would be an improvement. Â Service is always good - wish they took credit cards.
Review Source:Sals Pizza has good flavor, crust, amount of sauce and cheese is good. The toppings are a little skimpy.
I got a meatball sub today (I needed something quick), they usually shove it in the pizza oven, it might be to disguise the day old sub roll because I did not get it toasted and the roll was stale. To top it off, THERE WAS 5 - MEATBALLS CUT IN HALF WHICH MEANS FOR $6.50 I GOT 2-1/2 MEATBALLS!!!! GET THE PIZZA NOT THE SUBS.
The Whites Ice Cream next door is delicious.
Friday night at home? Pizza is usually a good call. Was originally going to order delivery but when the staff member on the other end said "we'll get that to you as soon as possible" I immediately switched my order to pickup. 6:30 on a Friday night and to get that response for delivery essentially says "we're very busy, it could be a while". Don't beat around the bush, give me an approximate time, and I will adjust my order accordingly.
Arrived about a half hour later, and saw that my order was nearly complete as I was walking through the door. Note...they do not accept credit cards (yet), but there is an ATM in the doorway. However, some prior notification of this (sign, etc.) would be appreciated. Staff was polite and friendly, and offered to help bring the food outside (I ordered quite a bit).
Now onto the food...
- Greek Salad: Classic, creamy dressing, not bad...BUT what really disappointed me was that the chicken was simply boiled, diced chicken breast with no seasoning. Expected grilled chicken, like most joints, but it was as advertised. Pita bread would have been nice as well.
-Margherita: Very good, a little heavy on the sauce, and lacked cheese but the oil, mozz, sauce and basil blended nicely.
-Buffalo Chicken: Lackluster at best. Chicken on top of was scarce, and there was WAY too much butter in the buffalo sauce, which detracted from the overall flavor and heat of the buffalo sauce.
Since they just opened, I understand that much of this is most likely growing pains. Working in the industry myself, I have helped a restaurant open and eventually become quite successful (I still work there to this day), and most of these issues are very normal. However, with a name like Sal's, with numerous locations around the Boston area for decades, it should not take a month to get a new franchise off the ground. Â I would definitely not completely rule these guys out, as they have the potential to outdo Village, Nicki's and Pizza Factory, which have been here for quite a while, but Sal's has some serious work to do.
