I've always thought of myself as the type of gal who digs dive bars.  But now I'm second guessing myself.  Everyone raved about Shipwreck Bar as the "best dive bar in Clearwater" but I just wasn't a huge fan.

From the outside, the decor looks a little cheesy.  But I was still interested in seeing if the inside had the same pirate theme.  It did.  Sorta.  It was kinda like a bar that actual pirates would have hung out in.  Which was kinda cool.  I guess.

There were four of us in our group and we were able to get a table near the bar, which had a fish tank on the one side of it (which was awesome).  Beers were pretty cheap and the bartender was very friendly.  The patrons all looked like locals, unlike the four of us who were obviously Yanks (with our accents and our pale skin and our incessant Phillies conversation).

This bar also had a pool table and a jukebox for those who are looking for that sort of thing.  The men in our group noted that the major game on the night (whatever that means) wasn't being shown on the TVs.  One thing to note- there is smoking in this bar.  Unfortunately I was wearing the only long pants and only jacket I brought with me on this trip.  Sooo... I smelled like smoke for the next three days.  Just something to keep in mind if you visit!

Overall, this is a very divey dive bar, so if that's your bag, you'll enjoy this spot.

    Dive bar!

I absolutely love this bar.  I venture down to Clearwater beach 2x a year for birthday parties (I live in St. Pete)..... this bar is always a must go to on our list.  The bartender is super friendly and attentive. The four times I've been there the bartender was amazing.... beers are served in mason jars which is pretty cool.
There is a DJ who plays requested music and just the hits.  He even let my friend and I do karaoke here one night!
There is one or two pool tables, they have that blow me test to see if you should be driving.  Bathrooms are super clean.
Bar is smokey and dark as I saw in someone else's review.

This is for sure a locals bar, but everyone is super friendly and you'll strike new friends in a matter of minutes.  Everyone talks to everyone and everyone has an amazing time.

This is a dive bar, so don't except some fancy place.  The interior is in a pirate type of mode which is pretty cool.  They were advertising an 80s party the weekend we went down there, but we didn't make it to the party.  I heard it was pretty good though.

Good place to stop if you don't want to pay the tourist prices for drinks, and want a chilled laid back night.  We usually stay near the Hilton and walk to the bar which is about 15 minutes, and then call the free beach cab to get us back to the main drag.  It's a safe walk for sure.

Yep - it's a "Dive" bar - but if it were all new or any different - it wouldn't be the Shipwreck! Some what of a locals bar - but some tourists do find their way. It is what it is.... Not somewhere you would take a date to "impress her" Yet, here you will find a good bar staff - Especially Angie - fair drink prices for really good / strong drinks. Beer served in a Mason Jar. Nautical motif a few pirates etc... I have to say it is no longer super dusty - as they did a real super clean of all the bric a brac - nick a nacks. They also replaced the carpet with a wood laminate - which is MUCH better for dancing and got rid of that old smokey musty smell. They now have a DJ and a back patio which is nice to escape the smoke. No food - which is why this remains as one of the last bars your allowed to smoke inside. Does get a bit much on busy nights... even with smoke eaters. Sometimes I think people are smoking more then just cigarettes, but over all fun little place.

Shipwreck is the kind of dive bar you'd read about in a novel.  Old, rundown, musty.  Bartender smoking, heck, everyone in the place is smoking.  However, like a good novel, this bar has stories to tell, and many more to be written.   No one knows your name, or cares so you are free to be yourself.  And while no one knows your name or cares, everyone you speak to, responds positively.  Bartenders are non-pretensious and unassuming, however, they are friendly, fast and have great attitudes.

The reality is, this place is awesome!  You can cut loose and have a great time.

    Flip-flops recommended.

Hypothetically speaking, if you were to wander in here walking home after having a few drinks and were not quite ready to end your night, saw a huge dance floor and felt like you were the next contestant on So You Think You Can Dance and just wanted to let loose with absolutely no one caring. This would be the perfect spot. Hypothetically speaking, of course!

"Dive Bar" maybe doesn't do the Shipwreck justice.  It is a friendly place, catering more to locals than to tourists, which is just fine in my book.  There is a moderate nautical motif, but you don't have to worry about getting your drinks tangled up in fish nets.

A few TVs over the bar, multiple pool tables (free to play on Tuesdays!), and a long, galley-style bar.

I wandered in around 11pm, and the place was hopping.  On a Tuesday.  Karaoke every night but Sunday, and I heard some pretty fair singers.  Wasn't really paying attention to the karaoke, having found a spot at the far end of the bar to observe the native wildlife.

I ordered an Amber Bock, and was asked if I wanted "the little one, or the big one."  I selected the big one, and as an afterthought the bartendress (Shannon) asked me if I wanted to "kill the keg."

What?  Kill the keg?  Turns out that's all the beer you can drink for $12 bucks.  If I were 20 years younger, I might have tempted fate, but decided my dalliance with "the big one" was probably enough.  Little did I know that "the big one" was a 32 ounce chilled Mason jar full of my selected beverage.

Were I a smarter drinker (and by the end of the first "big one", I was...), I would have ordered a couple of the "little ones", as the bottom of my beer was a bit warm by the time I finsihed it.  I ordered a little one to finish off the evening.

I may have found a reason to visit Clearwater Beach more than once every 30 years.

This was the closest bar to our beach house, so we stopped in a couple times during the vacation. It is dubbed "where the locals drink" and that is a fair assessment of the place. It is the cheapest and diviest bar on the island and close to the residential portion of the island. I talked to a few people who lived there and don't really like drinking at the tourist spots, like Frenchy's or Shepard's.

The place is usually quiet and low key. There are a couple pool tables in the back room. Drinks here are cheap. I believe the tap beer was $1.75. One night, the bartender was making popcorn in the microwave and passing it out to the customers at the bar.
