This place has been shutdown to be made into a retirement community according to the locals.

On a middle-of-the-week night, Sipsey's was pretty slow and laid back: a couple games of pool were going, and a few parties were scattered around the two bars and as Uncle F. mentioned, there was a motorcyle outside the door and another one inside the building.

The music was a little overpowering for normal conversation, but upping our own volume allowed us to compete for the airwaves. We spent most of our time in the back section, which was very chill--we were the only ones back there for much of the night. A few bar-height tables and chairs, an old sofa and easy chair, and built-in benches along a couple of the walls around the pool table rounded out the seating options. Be wary of the sudden slope that joins the two parts of the establishment--I could see it becoming tricky after one's had a few.

Sipsey's seems to be a decent place to hang out and relax over a couple drinks. They're not going to have the beer selection of a J. Clyde or Parkside, but it looked like they had more than just light macrobrews on draught.

You'll find Sipsey behind iron gates strewn with white lights, in the basement of a tall brick apartment building.  When you walk in, you'll see pool tables and dart boards on the left, often a motorcyle parked to the right, then ahead, a small bar.  To the right of that is a small stage where local bands frequently play.  Walk between the bar and the stage, and you're in a back room that looks a bt like a classic English pub, with some dark wood accents and a tile floor.  Off to the right is another pool table.  The the left is the rest of the bar.  On Monday nights, you'll find a poker game going on in-between.  (It's a friendly game, and strangers are welcome to join in.)  Beyond that is a row of windows giving a good view of the downtown skyline.

    That's the physical.

What's really inviting about Sipsey is the people- particularly the bartenders.  They always make me feel more than welcome, and they seem just plain happy to be there.  The people who come to Sipsey also seem to be welcoming.  It's very easy to make friends there.

The beer selection is good, but they're often out of some of my faves- and the bartender may need a moment or two, but he'll always find my #2, even if the has to go to the back to get it.  As for food, well....sometimes someone will order a pizza and share it around.  On some odd Monday nights here and there, the bartender will light up a small charcoal grill outsdie the front door and grill hot dogs.

It's a place where you'll feel like family right away.  The only thing I don't like about Sipsey is that on some nights, I leave smelling like an ash tray.  That's really the only point off in the ranking.
