this is a solid above average fast food take out. Part of my reasoning is it has been around for years, and the food is consistent. For what it is it deserves 4 stars, I'm not saying this is a 5 star restaurant, but in the world of fast food it deserves a solid 4 stars. The fries are amazing, hand cut curly q's, the burgers are defiantly not as good as they were years ago, but there good non the less. Its best to go during random hours i.e 2 pm 4 pm 8 pm . Anything around lunch or dinner can cause you to have to wait in a long line. However they are pretty quick, but I'd rather not mill around in a line for 15-20 in the heat. I personally have never enjoyed there shakes, there to watered down, so id recommend just a soda.

Like others have written: Underseasoned burgers, underseasoned fries. Incredibly expensive for what you get. Old, cluttered interior. There's really nothing redeemable about this place.

The retro sign is no lie, as you're in for a classic drive-in style burger. Thin yet juicy, Skip's cheeseburger is a unique and delicious piece of Americana. The shoestring fries are worth the diet derail.

The lines are long and slow, and you'd better know what you want and how much cash to fork over when your coveted turn comes up. Eat at casual tables inside the plain but fine dining room, or outside at picnic tables. We get ours to go and pop the hatch on the mommavan while we chow down tailgate-style in the ample parking lot at this seasonal hidden gem.

Don't go here expecting a fat patty and you will get a flavorful burger and sides. As mom and pop roadside stands go, don't skip Skip's.

Excellent quality. The perfect answer to your burger cravings. Only gripes: burgers are a bit small and the curly fries are hard to eat gracefully. But if you love stuffing your face with great tasting burgers, fries, or even a club sandwich, there's nowhere better in the area.

Really not up to a return visit for the price i got a x3 cheese it was like a triple McDonalds cheeze burger.  For 11$ i can get a much better x3 cheese at Wendys

Kinda sad considering how long they been there

Delicious burgers. They aren't very thick, but thats how I like them. They use fresh Angus burger meat and prepare their burgers fresh daily (no frozen patties!). The fish is very good too - I had the beer battered Haddock 'Sea Dog' which I dont recommend as takeout as the tartar sauce makes the bun soggy if you wait too long to eat.

I do wish that the fries were cooked longer. They are good, but they aren't crispy. This might be a personal preference - but I like a little crucnh to my Suzie-Q (also known as curly) fries.

Word of caution - the small soda is a truly small size. Probably 6 oz. maybe a bit less. I think its worth the $1 price but if you're expecting McDonalds portions you'll be dissapointed. I, for one, appreciate the portion control.

The place is immaculately clean. Tables, counters, and what you can see of the kitchen etc. are spotless.

Even though I grew up here, I never once went here until recently.

This place is cash only, so don't bring your credit or debit cards.

So we have gotten the burgers and the curly fries and as they all raved about it, I could not see what was so special about this place.  I could have made a better burger on the grill than what I ate.  It was not seasoned or a good quality meat.  The fries were subpar, and they weren't really curly.  They were more stringy fries than anything.

    The frappe wasn't anything special.

The sitting area and wait area were both large and very clean.  Their deco is nostaliga for some, but I thought it was more dated than retro.  Maybe if they spruced up the place with some more things from the times, then it'll be a little more interesting than the bright white walls and oddly spaced out decorations.

I don't think I'd be coming back for the food, but I may check out the car shows that everyone talks about.  I hope that's better than the food here.

I have gone to Skips since I was a little kid with my Aunt and have great memories of eating there especially the fries.  I have continued the tradition with my daughter yearly who is now in her twenties.  Over the last years I have continued to go because of this tradition but really have not enjoyed the food as much.  I commented to someone on the staff of how the fries were just little pieces and not the curley ones and she said to mention it to the front counter which I did.  A woman came over to me and I very nicely explained how I came there every year and asked about the fries how they had changed the last times I came.  She went on to give me an education of how they never had curley fries and they were called suzy q's and one potato produced one of them. I guess sometimes we just have to live with our memories.

    Very Disappointing!!!

After years of hearing friends rave about Skip's, I made my first ever visit yesterday. All the love for Skip's has to come from pure nostalgia since it surely can't be for the food. They proclaim in huge neon letters to have the "Best Hamburgers" but as others have already pointed out the burgers and fries at McDonald's puts Skip's to shame and that is a pretty low bar to begin with.

The meat patties (I hesitate to use the word Beef) are small, thin and not tasty at all. The only thing more disappointing than the burger itself is the generic, store brand quality buns that you can buy a package of eight for 79 cents. Sad when the best part of a burger is the lettuce.

As for the fries, sure they give you a large pile but they are soggy and taste of old oil rather than crispy fried potato. I could at least understand all the love and praise Skip's gets if it was cheap but it is not. Why settle for this wimpy, flavorless burger when a chain like 5 Guys, In & Out, or Fatburger will give you both burgers and fries that are a 1000 times better than Skip's for about the same cost. Hell, Not to mention why bother going out to eat at all when anyone could cook up a far better burger at home for a fraction of the cost.

sadly, the quality of the food appears to have gone down this year (meat doesn't seem to be the same quality).  we'll still be going for the car shows, and the occasional burger, but probably won't go as often.

How does skips only have 25 reviews?!?! Nothing about this place is upscale or classy, and I love it. It's cash-only, which seems normal in the northeast, but I don't get. Whatever. No one loses points in my book for being cash only. If you're looking for delicious greedy cheeseburgers and a mountain of fries, then skips is your place. The shakes....or frappes well whatever they're called where the only ehhh item I had. Not great but not terrible. I am definitely going back.

Brought the kids here over the weekend and it was great.  The line was out the door like usual but it didnt take very long for us to order.  It was the first time the kids were there.  My son ordered a Hamburger special with bacon, and my daughter went for the hotdog with a side of curly q fries.  Everything was eaten and we even had some fries to bring home.  On the ride home my nine year old son told us that when he has kids and they are old enough to go out to eat, this is the first place he is going to bring them.

NOTE: Cash only, this is OLD SCHOOL and is now on your Food Bucket List, been around since 1949, making their food the same way since then, CAUTION they use Peanut Oil, so if your allergic, ha ha. Primary fried food, burgers are the reason to come.. medium sized, I get the Special (dont call it a combo, they will know your a toursit, and if its to go its for Take out) comes with burger and Curly Fires. I get the Bacon Double Cheesburger (Let, tom, Cheese, Ketchup, Mustard, Pickles I think) and I get the Hotdog (condements on bottom) Ketchup, Mustard Rellish. Its Greasy goodness, but one of great joints that is famous for its originality and Local Flair. Indoor and outdoor eating and car Shows once a month. Fun cheap day out. Minimal decor, but who cares, the food is tasty and classic.  Check it!

My buddy Scott turned me onto this place, he likes to eat and has been going since he was kid.... you bring your kids, they will too

    Gutes Essen YO!

The cheeseburgers here are comparable to Wendy's. The fries are good. If you are hungry, order two burgers! You will need them! Not bad, but don't go out of your way for it!

There are two reasons to go to Skip's:

    1. Double cheeseburger with bacon
    2. Curly Fries

It's not really summer 'til you've been to Skip's. Bring my mom and you'll get extra pickles (hers).

I have been going to skips for well over forty years.  I have been a regular customer for a very long time. Over the last couple of years the quality of the food has decreased greatly.  The price has increased regularly and the value received for that price has greatly decreased. The hamburg special is now $6.00 , for fries that have been terrible and a burger that costs .99 at Mc Donalds.  Tried Skips again today, Sunday, fries terrible, cooked in grease that is old and has  not  been cleaned, better burger at a fast food place. I have noticed the volume of business is way off from what it used to be. Instead of blaming the economy maybe Skips owners should re evaluate what they are doing, their price structure and the  quality of the product  they are serving. The soft serve is very good. After 40 plus years, I am done . No more Skips foe me.

I love Skip's!  It's one of the reasons I gain five pounds every summer.

I always get a double cheeseburger special.  (Don't bother getting a single unless you're under the age of 12.)  The curly Q fries are sometimes curly, sometimes not, but always really tasty.  The service is always great, and I love sitting outside on the picnic tables.

The line is often long, but moves quickly.

    Just an awesome dive!

I love Skips. I have been going there for decades and consider it a "summer must"! It feels like a drive-in from the 50's and their suzy-q french fries can't be beat. A Cheeseburger Special and a big pile of fries-the best.

    Not Good.

First, a little background: I've been dating my bf who is from this area for over 5 years now. I've been asking him ever since I first started coming up here to go to Skips and he always made an excuse not too. I always thought this was strange but what do I know. We recently moved in together no more than two miles away from Skips so I finally decided that today was the day I would try this mysterious place that we've driven by so many times.

When you walk in, you walk up to a window. There is one ordering window. ONE. I can only imagine how long the lines are during busy summer days. You can decide to sit inside the dining room or outside on one of the dozen picnic tables. We opted for the air conditioned dining room, which has a good amount of tables.

    Now, onto the food...

I ordered the cheeseburger special, which is just a cheeseburger with fries. The bf got the chicken finger special which was chicken fingers and... you guessed it, fries. Service was friendly enough and the food was ready in 5minutes or so. The food is NOT what I expected. I thought my cheeseburger was going to be something impressive, instead it looked like I got it straight from the McDonalds drive thru, only the lettuce was a bit fresher. The hamburger patty had nothing too it, really disappointing. The bf was not impressed w/ the chicken fingers. The 'famous' curly fries were only good if you added a pound of salt to them and oh, btw, none of them were curly and most of them broke as we picked them up. sigh.

The entire meal cost us just under $20.

Honestly I dont want to be obnoxious but if I had to chose between going back to Skips or going to a fast food drive thru, I'd pick the latter. In my opinion the only impressive thing about Skips is the neon sign outside... truly disappointing.

(Quick note: Skips is CASH ONLY and SEASONAL April-early October)

    SKIP'S!!!
Why did my parents never bring me here as a kid! I grew up so close and had to be introduced to this place in a formal way by some chick I met on the internet! Pathetic!

The burgers and fries are right on. I haven't been dissappointed (although nostalgists seem to believe the curly fries were much curlier back in the day).

I have tried their chowder. It was okay. I have tried a hot dog here too. It was good. But it's the burgers and fries that I pine for.

Another reviewer mentioned peanut oil might be what they use on the fries and that is correct.

The place isn't classy; the burgers small and greasy but it's a piece of heaven in a paper basket with a milk shake on the side.

(Oh, and West-Coasters on a visit to New England - the burgers are comparable to In-N-Out)

This place sucks. When I first moved to Amesbury I was sooooo excited to eat at Skips. Thinking it was going to be the Diamond in the rough, The place to eat a few times a week on those warm summer nights. I was stoked. Then I went there! Its like dropping your wallet off  at Mcdonalds for them to rape & pillage. I just expected so much more, maybe to much..... I !!!!HATE!!!! CASH ONLY! Any business that is CASH ONLY should get with the times... Ya Im talkin to you too Hodgies!

I really like Skips. Ive been coming here since I was a wee lass!
Anyway, their cheeseburger special is so disgustingly, fatteningly, naughtily DELICIOUS!

The cheeseburgers and Hand-cut curley fries are made with a special something (I think peanut oil maybe?)

the fries are a mile long sometimes too, which is always fun.

This place has cruise nights and its always fun to hear your order called on through what sounds like a tin can...l." NUMBAHH FOHHH""

Outside benches in the sun is where I always sit.. next to some guys dog usually.

fun. good. cheap. fattening.... what else could you ask for!

I heard about Skip's for a while and was hungry to check out their burgers.  Burgers are flat patty, a la west coast, and a single burger is just not enough.  Do a double!  Had a double cheez and it did not need ketchup as it had its own fixings and a nice amount of mayo.  A bit greasy but pretty solid and resembles an In & Out quality burger.

Fries are curly and come out with no salt on them.  They are ok, guess I am not a curly fry kind of guy.  Milkshake tasted like flavored milk and not much else.  Frappe was solid tho!  (frappes have ice cream and shakes do not.  This shake lacked the shake part..)

Would go back for a burger.  Fast, tasty and cheap!

Hands down, some of the best burgers and fries I've ever had.  Their hamburger-stand roots have clearly stayed strong through the years, and it remains a fantastic place to come with family and kids to sit outside and enjoy a delicious, FRESH meal.  I can see why the locals come back each and every year, generation after generation.

    Long live Skip's.

    Skip's wasn't too bad.

I found out about this place by watching Phantom Gourmet one morning.  Which happens quite a bit actually, I see the place on TV and then jump up and go... kind of spontaneous like that.  Thanks Phantom!

Since their staple is there fresh made, hand cut fries, that was the main purpose for my visit.  But for this trip I decided I would try a hamburger as well.
The fries were actually very tasty, well made... not too soft, not to crispy/burnt, and just enough seasoning to not ruin the experience.  I ate mine with ketchup, and that seemed to work out well too.  ;)  LOL

The burger wasn't that great though.  I can't really tell you if there much flavor, because the burger was so thin.  The meat was thin cut and barely there, that it was hard to even notice if you had a hamburger.  Not sure if I picked a bad day, or the wrong burger, but it was a poor excuse for one.

The experience was fine, though a bit crowed.  Services was quick, and place was clean.  Food came out nice and hot, and didn't sit under a lamp either.  Once it was done cooking, it was on a basket/tray and to the window for pick-up.

Good fries, but not much more I could recommend from my visit.

    Meh...  Not great, not horrible.

I had been to Skip's once before and thought it was metza metz but I had always wanted to give it another shot, figuring that anyplace with a sign that cool had to be good!  In addition to that, a lot of people rave about skips.  But the food there isn't even as good as McDonald's.  Seriously the food off the McDonald's dollar menu and McDonald's milkshakes are better than what I had a Skip's.  If you're a hole-in-the-wall burger joint you have to better than that.

The coolest element of Skip's is their retro 1950's sign out front.  That's what's drawn me in on both occasions.  But the restaurant itself is bland; it almost looks like a cafeteria; it really doesn't have any ambiance to speak of.

The service was friendly, polite & fairly quick; that's one thing I'll give them points on.  But the burger was very mediocre.  The buns were small and probably grade C meat if I had to make a guess.  The fries were homemade but tasted kind of metza metz.  The chocolate shake really didn't taste all that great.

Plus it was expensive for what you pay for.  I could have gotten the exact same thing at McDonald's.  It would have tasted better and probably wouldn't have cost much more than $6.50 as opposed to over $11.00 at Skip's.

I wouldn't be adamantly opposed to going there a again but if I have a craving for a burger again and I'm in that area I'll be going to another burger joint up the street in Amesbury that's quite a bit better.  It's called Burger....  Burger....  Why am I drawing a blank right now???  Oh yeah- Burger King.

    Every year the joy begins.

Pull up to Skip's anytime after five o'clock and the place is hopping.

You order your food ("Hamburger, extra pickles, no mayo and a side of Suzie-Q Fries please").

Hand over your CASH (no credit cards here folks, this is an old timey place) take your number and wait for that glorious number to be called.

With your number called, your food comes up.

Hot and Fresh, oh so fresh (so unlike those fast food chains. No microwaves here!).

    Edible Bliss.

    Closes at 9pm!

This is not gourmet !!  This is a greasy cheeseburger joint.
The lobster rolls are very good as are the curley q french fries cooked in peanut oil.  like other have said " if you grew up around here it is a tradition to go to skips every summer. not so great as to go 10 times, but definitely worth a couple trips.

It's that time of year again. I got my 1st Skip's double cheeseburger of the season and it was fabulous. Ok, so technically it's not the best burger I've ever had. But come on, it's Skip's. I've been coming here my whole life and don't have any plans to stop going.
You must go on a Cruise Night. I love checking out the old muscle cars.

People, People, You just don't GET IT!  It's only nostalgia if you grew up (like me) looking forward each year to their opening day, and dread the coming fall, for reasons of them closing!  So, don't say you don't "get" the nostalgia, if you are going there for the first time! Have an open mind and a hungry belly and you will eat some great, lovingly made food!

I spent many years, with my grandparents taking me here before we even moved to the area (RIP Gramps, he and I in later years would come here when I would spring him from the nursing home for an afternoon of debauchery!!)

....I can remember being a little kid and sitting in the back of the station wagon.....devouring all the yummy vittles!  Later beggin my parents to bring me here before I got my license....LOL.

    as for the food:

The fresh cut, curly fries are amazingly tasty. yes, they can be a bit greasy, but, hello....THEY ARE FRIES! BUT, they are so unique, they are not pre-made or frozen, all are done fresh to order!

The Double Cheeseburgers are the way to go, loaded with lettuce and onions....mmmmm YUMMM!

Honestly, I would not recommend the frappes unless you like (like the other reviewers said) soft serve type shakes. Not my thing, but not taking away stars for it, as they clearly show on the signs that the shakes are made from soft serve!

And so what that it's cash only! Get over it, a lot of businesses are like that, the prices would go way up if they had to get overcharged by the credit card companies.

This is a family run business that has been in business forever. When i first started coming here, i don't even think they had the little dining room area, everyone used to eat out on the picnic tables or in your car!  (I think when my grandparents first started going there, they had car hop service, but not sure).

Anyway, I haven't lived in the area for a long time, but family still does, and i will go out of my way every time during the summer months to stop by here for a yummy burger, some awesome fries and some wonderful memories!

and btw, everyone whom i have ever brought here has absolutely loved it as well!

Kat, sorry but never order a shake in New England. What you wanted was a frappe. And for that, go down the road to Hodgie's.

I also don't understand the hype about Skips' milk and ice cream products. They're standard fare soft serve.

The food here is fast food, but made-to-order with fresh ingredients. The fries are amazing.  The lobster rolls are also really good. It is not cheap, however. I don't eat much fast food, so when I do I don't mind spending a few bucks to upgrade from Wendy's to Skips.

I'm Pro-Nostalgia, but I don't get the hype about Skip's. I've heard this place raved about normally trustworthy people, and my husband even saw the host of "Dancing with the Stars' here last time he visited.

First off--CASH ONLY. My husband left to get money (no ATM on-site) while I perused the menus. I had heard great and noble things about their burgers, so I brushed off the $5.25 Burger'n'fries price tag, and since I was told "You HAVE to get a shake" I got a shake hoping the $4.50 would be worth it.

My friends, the burger I believe was flatter than McDonalds, and the Milkshake had the consistency of bone marrow. One could definitely tell the meat was fresher, but the bun, width, girth, everything--if you had blindfolded me I would have BARELY have been able to tell I wasn't eating a dollar-menu burger. They do come with a heaping of  shoestring curly fries, which one can tell are homemade, but I don't like buying what amounts to 4.00 worth of fries. I was so glad I took the cover off the milkshake though--it was porous, full of clumps of NOT ice cream and unevenly distributed flavoring. I threw the rest out. I swear, I would have been better off going to McD and ordering a regular hamburger, small fry and milkshake for the much more palatable 3.00. For 2 burger & fry combos and 2 shakes, we spent exactly $20.00. I totally feel ripped off and bummed that I willingly forewent a good day of dieting for mediocre food.

PLUS, though I love local, townie, dive-ish places, this one didn't cut it for me. Concrete floor, bright blue tables, wood-paneling from the 70s and little-boys car wall paper from the 80s...I don't get it. I want to get it, and love it, and understand the obvious local-enthusiasm, but as of right now, I don't know if I'm planning on going back.

Fun little snack bar with all kinds of traditional American fried and grilled favorites. We like to go on "Cruise Night" when all the classic cars come and park. I also love the big field out back so we can eat outside on a summer evening and our dog can run in the lawn. I thought the prices are a bit expensive for a snack bar. What do others think?
