We went here for dinner and the experience was quite terrible. We got there at 6:30 PM and didn't leave until after 9:00, and this was on a Tuesday night. I had to get the manager's attention just to be seated, it took another 15 minutes for our server to come to our table, and an hour after we ordered our food the waitress informed us that they were out of the dish that we had ordered. The food was good, but not worth waiting so long for it.  This is not a place we will be revisiting, especially since there are much better restaurants within walking distance. Food = good, Service = the worst

Very underrated spot. I think the price scares a lot of people off but the drinks and menu really can't be compared to anything else in Birmingham. I have only visited once or twice for dinner - and was please. However, the brunch menu is one of the best in town and the covered patio out back is worth the trip alone. Indoors is quiet and romantic. Would definitely recommend for a 1st or 2nd date. Owner is extremely nice and accommodating.

The food was decent, but way overpriced for you what get. I enjoyed by margarita, however. We had the crap tacos (very good, but about $5 overpriced) and empanadas (not the best and about twice as much as they should have been). The guacamole dish was small and lacking in taste, and not worth $6.  Our service was good. Atmosphere was good. I would go back if someone else was paying.

Thanks to a Sharing Spree deal I recently visited Sol Y Luna.  My thirteen year old son chose to dine outside and it was a great choice.  We shared our tapas or I should say he allowed me to have a few bites.  It's not easy to please a pizza loving teenager but he loved our tapas.  Tomatillo Soft Lobster Taco, Crabmeat Enchiladas and Deep Sea Scallops were incredible.   We will definitely visit Sol Y Luna again in the near future and will probably order the same tapas - maybe two of each.   Hoping we'll see another Sharing Spree deal for Sol Y Luna!

I loved Sol Y Luna's cool tapas. It is a great upscale Mexican menu using quality ingredients.  Any restaurant that sees the value of a good garlic clove gets a good grade in my book!  I also loved that they did not overcook the shrimp.  Not many non coastal restaurants get it right but they did!  I tried this restaurant because I had a Sharing Spree deal.  I have since returned and told others to visit there.

I came here last night with four friends.  We really enjoyed our meal, there is a tone of attention to detail in the menu planning and our server knew the menu very well, and was friendly, helpful, and never got annoyed with a table of five indecisive girls.

I had the Vegetable salad, seared queso fresco and the chile relleno.  It was a ton of food, but oh so good.  The Chile Relleno has a ton of unique flavors which are pretty different from your tipical Chile Relleno, there are raisins, craisins, and other fruit in it that give the beef a little bit of a sweet flavor.  I really enjoyed it a lot.

I didn't get a margarita but all of the other girls at my table did and they loved them!

Because it's small plates, I would expect to spend at least $25  - $30 on food per person (just to give people an idea on cost).

Worth another try.... Went for a friends B-day party and enjoyed the delicious and flavorful scallops.  (Worth the drive)  Not sure if my drink will be ordered if we go again.  A fruit (fresh strawberries) sangria lacking something...  Or maybe mine I make at home are just too yummy...  My husband had the tuna tacos and it had a nice flavor.  BUT.... 1) feel a bit over price for what you get. 2) BEYOND hot (AC?) 3) drinks are pricey 4) I'm just not sure... The ladies room did have neat decor inside.  I think I'll save this place for another visit when it's much cooler outside.

They could use a few more dinner options in addition to the Tapas. If they are going to mostly be a Tapas place... have a few more to choose from, lower the cost per place a wee bit and make it more bar like.

The decor was nice and our waitress did as best she could with our large party.

Overpriced food and horrible management ! Alex, the manager has no clue on how to say: "Sorry" and show some interest in listening to a customer... 45 minutes to get a drink order ... perhaps this manager should hire a competent barman instead in doing the drinks himself and then take a long vacation away from the restaurant business.... spoiled my night out...

We were treated to Sol Y Luna recently after my Mom won a gift card from the Birmingham News!  It was very tasty!  We stayed away from the lobster, as other reviewers highly recommended this.  We had the queso appetizer.  Very unusual and tasty.  Do not expect the queso you usually have at a Mexican restaurant.  We shared a couple of tapas and enjoyed the Sol y Luna margarita.  I'm afraid I can't remember the tapas we ordered--but we enjoyed them.  I'm not sure we'd make it back only because the cost is very high for the small amount you get.  We finished up with the churros--yum!

This restaurant came highly recommended to us as having the best margharita in town! Upon walking in we were transported to an authentic Mexican decor. The menu was fantastic. We would have liked to try it all but what we did try we loved. I had the premium margarita which I recommend. The lobster enchiladas were so good we were fighting over it! We also had the pork which was paired with rice, also very good. For dessert what else but churros with chocolate sauce?!? Each bite melted in my mouth. The server was friendly and the table was intimate. Will be back next time I'm in Birmingham!

Sol y Luna is perhaps my favorite restaurant in Birmingham.  It is a seafood based Mexican and Gulf Coast fusion.  For the price, you cannot beat the atmosphere, food, and drinks.  It's a little pricier than your average Mexican restaurant, but the price is well worth the quality of service, ingredients, and delivery of the meal.

I've never responded to another comment posted here before, but I think the "upscale Mexican shouldn't exist" comments are absurd and insulting to a spectacular food tradition.  I understand not everyone has had the opportunity to visit the cebicherias of the Pacific Mexican coast or the fine restaurants of Mexico City, but to pigeon hole an entire country's cuisine into a cheap Speedy Gonzales stereotype taco stand is crazy.  Great Mexican is anything but "run down".  That said, to the delicious food!

Food:  Fantastic.  Sol y Luna is a tapas style restaurant that should be enjoyed as such.  Order one per person and share.  The cuisine leans towards seafood, and that's what you should focus on.  There are a couple of "main courses" available, but the majority of the menu is made up of smaller tapas that should be shared at table.  Literally everything on the menu is great with the unfortunate exception of the lobster tacos which have already been mentioned here.  Do avoid those.

Start with the chips and salsa sampler which comes with great home made chips from a variety of potatoes and plantains served with a fresh guacamole.  The mussels dish is a real hit with a deliciously rich alcohol and animal fat based sauce (I'm thinking Vermouth, white wine, and rendered pork fat) served with cilantro, cheese, and bread to dip.  The stuffed poblano pepper with pomegranate seeds is fantastic.  Following a very typical Latin American tradition, the Shrimp Diablo dish is served over deliciously cooked mashed sweet potatoes that have the perfect amount of sweetness.  The shrimp are large, perfectly cooked, and not over-seasoned to the point of not being able to enjoy the taste of the shrimp.  The beef medallions dish is delicious for meat lovers and is served with a cheese sauce without being too rich.  The beef dish that is in the main courses section (sorry I cannot remember the name) does tend to be a bit sweet.  The scallops dish is perfectly executed with a spicy/sweet seasoning, nice crust, and soft center.  The Main Courses section has a red snapper and shrimp dish served in a white wine sauce that is smooth and not too buttery.  Very good, though check the market price before ordering as this dish can get pretty expensive.

Drinks:  The Sol y Luna margarita is the best in town.  It's a spicy mix of juice, tobasco, fine tequila, and grenadine that is spicy, sweet, and delicious.  It's the best cocktail in town.

Service:  For a typically young wait staff they are quick, friendly, and very familiar with the menu.

All in all:  Don't miss this place!  It's a perfect mix of Gulf Coast seafood and Mexican cuisine.  It's a little pricier than your typical restaurant, but well worth it.  If you're looking for mariachi music, Cinco de Mayo beer streamers, and a statue of Pancho Villa wearing a sombrero in the corner, this place isn't for you, but I think you'll love it.

Way too expensive! Had recommendations that they served the Best Margaritas in town, but was rather disappointed. Smooth margarita, but nothing special for shelving out $8. My boyfriend & I decided that we could make the stuffed poblano peppers at home minus the pomegranate seeds. Agree with the below comment that upscale Mexican food should not exist, esp. for the ridiculous prices there. I'm going to get my real Mexican food down in Green Springs & Lorna Rd.

I stumbled onto this place while working alone in Birmingham. It is Cinqo de Mayo and there are three killer reviews on yelp. So why not? Right when I walked in I realized I had made a mistake, that it is one of those swanky Modern Mex restaurants. First of all, nothing against the restaurant, but Upscale Mexican should never exist in the first place. Best Mexican food is always found in your run down taco huts from shady parts of town. There is nothing upscale about tortilla wraps, rice, and beans...I don't care how you cook them!

Anyway, that aside I sat down for a light dinner and ordered a lobster taco and the chips and salsa sampler for myself. Food arrived quickly, which is a positive. The chips are interesting and non-greasy but I really don't think they go with the traditional dipping sauce of salsa and avocado. The lobster taco was a huge let-down. It was runny (there was some sort of cream sauce inside the wrap that unfortunately was extremely watery and didn't taste like anything) and bland. For some reason the chef felt the need to sprinkle more of the same chips found in the chip and salsa sampler onto the taco dish. The crusty chips did not go with the dish at all and became soggy within minutes. I suspect they were placed on the plate simply to make the dish appear more substantial.

Service was fine. My waiter was friendly and helpful. I did notice however that after my plate was taken away and before my check came, the person with the water conveniently "forgot" about my table as she walked by multiple times, filling glasses for people all around me.

Overall, very mediocre food, and for $25 bucks before tips it was the most disappointing Mexican meal I have ever had, "upscale" or not.

Fantastic.  Great atmosphere and ambiance.  Easy location.  Tequila sampler fun, selection of tequila is great. Waiters can make recommendations.  Outside courtyard highly recommended.  Fun place for group or intimate dinner.  Restaurant is small enough to feel cozy, but large enough so you don't feel cramped.  Food is EXCELLENT.  Save room for dessert!  You won't believe the banana crepes (not super sweet, just perfect) or the churros (sort of like a long skinny beignet with a bit of cinnamon), better than the ones I've had in Spain. ;-)  Try the coffee!  Also if you don't want to spend a lot, go with some appetizers and dessert.  I drive from Tuscaloosa to eat here.  Enjoy!

I absolutely adore Sol Y Luna.  In fact, I can't believe I haven't written this review before now.  I think I ate here more during the one year I lived in Birmingham than anywhere else.  The food is magnificent.  Upscale Mexican with a twist - and undoubtedly the best (aptly named "Perfect") Margarita I have ever had:  a brilliant concoction of premium tequila and a blend of citrus juices that goes down easy.  You will want another one of these, I assure you!  Starting with the chip and dip sampler, I love just about everything on the menu.  The chicken chilaquiles and the beef blanket are among my favorites (what's a beef blanket?? euphoria on a plate).  I order these dishes every time I go and I'll usually add something I've never tried before or a special just to mix things up. I can remember ordering the special one particular night and it was so memorable that I've been anxious to get back to Birmingham just so I can have it again:  a steaming bowl of shrimp, red snapper, and vegetables, all bathed in a white wine broth and served with thick slices of warm bread.  Heavenly!

Sol Y Luna is perfect for groups or just for two.  Actually, I'd go by myself the food is so good.  My favorite place to sit is on the back patio, especially if the weather isn't so great so I can hear the glorious sounds of rain falling on the tin roof.

Oh how I miss this wonderful little slice of Utopia in Birmingham.  Must return soon!

I LOVE this place. Where to start, the bar! Tequila Sampler with some of the best Tequila they allow you to serve in Alabama. The margarita's, soooo good. There is one named, Sol Y Luna, a bit spicy garnished with a fresh jalepeno. The passion is full of fresh strawberries and rimmed with sugar!
Now the food. I love their lunches best you can get a soup & sandwich or a salad & sandwich combo which is filling and priced well. For dinner I love the empanadas.
