Absolutely loved this place!!!!  The first time I had the grown-up grilled cheese (DELICIOUS) and the 2nd time I had an omelet (ALSO DELICIOUS).  Will definitely be a regular for Spoons!

Deplorable service, some of the lowest quality food I've experienced ie. bacon, sausage and no real butter. All decor no substance.

Sadly we ate there today and were seriously disappointed. Both me and the wife had the classic club sandwich, mine with black pepper fries and hers with tomato basil soup. Both sides were void of any flavor. Fries were way too greasy and soup was very watery, tasted like it came from a can. Sadly, the sandwiches were also a major disappointment. Although the bread was slightly toasted, there was no crunch that a good club sandwich should have. Both sandwiches were very soft as if they had not been toasted and very skimpy on ingredients and flavor. As I said earlier, the fries were so bad, I asked that they be substituted for potato chips. It's sad, as we have been wanting to try this place for a long time, but after this experience, we will not be returning.

Great little cafe in the heart of McKinney.  Good sandwiches along with a great selection of desserts and coffee drinks.

Just walking around main street in McKinney and we wanted a snack and something to drink we decided to try Spoons Cafe.  The service was great and everyone was very nice and friendly. We sat outside and enjoy a great afternoon having a few cold beers, the avocado and chips ( very good) and a bowl of chilly. My son had the chilly dog and there famous milk shake and he loved it. We want to come back and try there main menu next time we are in Spoons Cafe.

Spoons Cafe is a fun little place to go for breakfast or lunch. I've been here twice for dinner and I'm not a fan of really loud music. Yes, they have live music on the weekends. It is really good to listen too, just a little loud for me. Breakfast is my favorite. The pancakes are amazing and so are the french toast dishes. The coffee is the best as it is from a local roaster @coffee_del_rey #coffeedelrey. Service can be spotty for lunch, but breakfast we've never had issues. Definitely come hungry because they know how to feed you! Oh, the cupcakes are a little dry maybe try a slice of pie instead.

First time to have breakfast here. Very disappointed with the chocolate chip pancakes. A short stack of regular pancakes with a small handful of cold chocolate chips thrown on top. Is it really that difficult to add chocolate chips to the batter before cooking them? Friend had an omelette, which he said was ok. That's how I'd rate the breakfast overall. It was ok. Nothing special.

I love spoons! My sisters and I go there often. We love the live music (when they aren't incredibly drunk) and the food is awesome every time! We've had both good and bad experiences here with service. One day the service is awesome and the waitress is friendly, and the other day the service is slow and the server is unfriendly. I feel like it's a toss up each time we go... But I do know that it is good enough that we still love to go frequently :-)

This is our first time.  The service wasn't the best.  People that came after us was getting their food before us.  Order Chicken & Waffle...the menu says it was suppose to come with 3 chicken strips...it just came with 1 chicken breast.  The food was ok.  Think a little bit overpriced for what you get.  Not sure if I'll be back or not.

Spoons was once my favorite lunch eatery in downtown McKinney, no more. Kimberly, our server, was this highlight of our visit. She was bright, cheery, and welcoming as well as prompt.  I had the chicken salad sandwich which was void of flavor and on boring dry wheat bread.  My cupcake was OVERLY dry, but the frosting saved it. Just won't be going back. :(

This palce is great, many homemade items.  I had the veggie migas and they were off the charts.  The owner sent an employee off to baking school (and paid for it) and she is back.  Everything she bakes are off the chart.

    Nice people.

We went to see a band play.  The place was packed.  The waitresses hustled and took care of everyone.  Dinner was good.  Dessert is awesome.  Cakes, cookies, and other assorted treats were all out of this world.

    I like it.

Great breakfast. Old brick walls and home cooking. Would have been 5 stars if not for the waitress taking time out to eat her breakfast . Left us a little in need for coffee   refill.

Love this place.  Order Chicken and Waffles.  Oh my.  Order the Spoons Bar for dessert (even if you don't need dessert after chicken and waffles).  Don't ask questions.  Just trust me here.  This is all you need to know, really.

McKinney's Square was a very pleasant surprise to us and Spoons was a really nice spot to have some breakfast on a chilly December morning.

Our service was excellent and the food was delicious--our experience makes me want to come back for lunch and dinner. The atmosphere here has a very comfortable Texas feel and the decor and seating was relaxing. Omelets, biscuits, bacon, coffee, etc. were all excellent and our server brought us coffee to go when be paid our bill.

On our next time back in McKinney, Spoons Cafe will be on our list to re-visit.

There's no shortage of good eats on the McKinney square nowadays. One of my favorites is Spoon's, which is one of those restaurants that has that odd but successful blend of hip/off-the-wall/breakfast/lunch/dinner/different in a good way vibe.

I've only ever been for lunch, and on any weekday that I've been it's been pretty crowded. Despite that, though, the service has been pretty prompt and pleasant. The menu boasts tons of tasty options, many of which most of my co-workers swear by. My usual lunch buddy always orders the chicken salad sandwich, which tastes pretty amazing and comes with a decorative garnish of fruits and veggies that's aesthetic to your eyes and your mouth. I always go for the Sig Salad, which is comprised of baby spinach, golden raisins, crumbled blue cheese, strawberries, and a blush wine vinaigrette. It's just the right amount of sweet and pairs well with a cup of soup or a half sandwich if you're craving something more robust.

Nowadays it seems that Spoon's is open even late enough for dinner most nights, and around the corner in the back boasts a sublet that's smaller, quainter, and kind of cafe-ish that specializes in To-Go orders.

The only possible downside to Spoon's is the price. It's going to be up there with most of your quaint, well-to-do little home shops. Expect to pay no less than ten bucks for a whole meal for lunch, and no telling about dinner (as I have yet to be there for dinner). It's fresh, tasty, and delicious, but not exactly somewhere I can eat on a too-regular basis.

All in all, though, Spoon's offers a great menu that is fresh and delicious. Considering the amount of die hard fans this place has on top of how busy it always seems to be, they've got to be doing something right. My only advice is try not to sit too close to the kitchen area when you're dining, otherwise you're going to gain five pounds just looking at the delectable desserts they have on display.

They offer breakfast all day and have patio seating!  Yippee!  There is a full bar for the mandatory Bloody Marys for brunch, Italian sodas, smooth coffees and yummy baked goods.  Food is home style so nothing vastly creative of special but decent choice in the square and service is usually pretty good.

Spoons. Greasy spoons? Silver spoons? Maybe somewhere in between. I want to love this place, I just can't. I want a kitschy, funky diner with REALLY good diner food and to-die for desserts. I'm not finding it at Spoons, and I've been there several times.

First of all, the service really needs to be revamped (or they need to hire more servers). I have not had an issue with unfriendly service, or unsocial. Just inattentive. It seems like once you get your food, your server is no where to be found, or you see them clear across the restaurant and they're avoiding eye contact with you. Maybe an outside company should be brought in for training because the in-house management is just not reaching the staff.

The food is really just ok. I'm sad to say that the best things are the salads (which are actually quite good). The sandwiches, hot and cold, are standard. Nothing great. The soups are below par. My daughter seems to like the potato bacon soup, but she likes her potato soup bland, and that's what Spoons delivers. So I'm happy that she's happy. Some of the prices are a little high for what you get.

The actual decor is cute, albeit dusty and that's kinda gross. I like the 'whatever we had in storage or found at the thrift store' feel. I like the couches that you can dine at with a vintage t.v. tray. I love all that silly crap! I just don't love the dust... Fine, don't dust a bike that's hanging way up on the ceiling (once a month would be appreciated, though), but dust the damn side table next to the arm chair or the freakin' window ledge.

My overall impression of this place is they try hard to not try. There's a way to make that work, Spoon's has not found it. I want them to succeed, they will because for some reason, McKinney loves them. I think the atmosphere, not the food (I can guarantee) is what gets them by. But Spoon's, do you only want to 'get by'? Don't you want to know that you are putting out the best quality food and service you can? If you think you already do, you are sadly disillusioned.

Great food and right on the corner of the square. If the weather is nice sit outside and people watch while you eat.

Try the grown up grilled cheese and have them add bacon, a side of sweet potato fries and follow it up with pie.

This review is for the GARAGE:

We absolutely LOVED this place! We needed a pick me up during the rain one day, and grabbed some coffee, hot tea and some desserts here.
The guy behind the counter was super nice, and suggested we get the Pecan Praline ice cream. We were leaning to the Cinnamon.
Thank God we listened to him because it was literally the best ice cream ever....

Not a fan of Spoons, everything seems a little greasy and overpriced but thought we would check out the new spot behind the restaurant called Spoons Garage ... oh my, what are they thinking ?  I thought it would be done up, kind of kitchy, but it was more on the trashy side, as in they didn't clean out the junk in storage before opening.

It was so uncomfortable feeling that we looked at the 4 muffins wrapped in plastic sitting on the counter and regular American coffee pot sitting on the warmer and thought, no, I don't think so.

We walked all around downtown looking for a place for a nice pastry and special coffee and none was found.  We found places offering coffee but the pastry had every one stumped.

    Eh!
It was just okay. I don't get all the hype?!?!  Looks cool but service is bad and foods over priced.  Went for breakfast--pancakes were good but were served with a frozen solid piece of butter. WTH?
Skip the cottage potatoes, they sound good, but they are bland and I could barely eat more than one piece.
Not sure if I'll return, it was nothing special.

It wasn't the worst dining experience I've ever had, but after a few recent meals worthy of 4 & 5 stars, Spoons Cafe is definitely only "meh".

The place itself is cute.....kind of a kitschy diner feel with cafe tables, an open kitchen w/ bakery cases, a make-shift bar, in a historic location.  Sadly, the food and service are substandard.

Hungry at 1:45pm, I popped into Spoons and asked to see a menu before deciding to chow down.  Perhaps the menu that had seen better days should have served as an omen.... the binding folds were torn and it had more greasy fingerprints than a contaminated crime scene, however, a fluffy pink cupcake in a bakery case caught my daughter's eye, so Spoons Cafe it was!

Our waitress. although exceptionally efficient, had the personality of a corpse and is in desperate need of a refresher course of basic social skills for service industry employees.  90 seconds after ordering our lunch....a small pasta salad (very oily & lacking flavor) and a "grown-up" grilled cheese w/  a cup a soup....it arrived.  No joke. It was actually a little disconcerting that it arrived that fast.  I seriously wouldn't have minded waiting 3 or 4 minutes for the grilled to cheese to be cooked.

Instant gratification is great in some instances, but a rubbery, cold sandwich delivered by a bored waitress expecting a 20% tip made the experience completely un-likeable versus simply unmemorable.

    We won't be back.

Spoons is a great place for lunch. I was here recently when visiting family and was relieved to find a place that had a large selection of vegetarian options (it's hard to find when traveling).

I enjoyed the Red Ferrari panini, which had The Red Ferrari roasted portabellas and red peppers, mozzarella, a basil-pesto sauce and sunflower seeds. It was absolutely delicious and the side salad that came with it was huge. For $8 I left completely stuffed!

The service was a bit slow, but the kitchen was busy and I wasn't in a hurry, so it didn't bother me. However, I would recommend preparing extra time for your meal if you go at peak times.

There is a large bakery in the back and we took cupcakes to go. When I ate them later, they were good, but not the best I've ever had. I still would recommend grabbing some after your meal, though, as they will satisfy a sweets craving.

When I return to McKinney, you can count on me returning to Spoons!

We will never return to this restaurant. Terrible service, food tastes just OK but very overpriced, AND an automatic 20% gratuity amount added to the bill for parties of 5+! When we examined the bill we wondered why the tip was so high. Curiosity  then tried to figure out how the tip was calculated. We noticed the tip was added on for us BUT it just didn't make sense for a couple of reasons--

     1. We certainly would NOT have given such a generous tip for the service (or lack thereof).

    AND

     2. The amount calculated for the tip was the result of an odd percentage.
Funny thing is that this is when the server told me about the 20%, so since we already tried using that %, for kicks I went back to the table and rechecked the numbers. Apparently, the restaurants "automatic" calculation was off by about 3%. We were so bothered by the "good service ASSUMPTION" that we decided not to point out the poor math skills. The calculation came to about 17.3% or something odd like this.

If you still choose to go eat at this restaurant I strongly suggest you check out this calculation--just for kicks! This place is totally overrated. Otherwise I hope you have a better experience than we did.

Meh. I don't see why McKinney-ites are so into this place. Yeah, the cool vintage look is neat but it's always packed and the little tables are crammed together.

The food is ok. Just sandwishes and soups.
They have a breakfast buffet on weekends I think but it's kind of bland also. Eggs, bacon, etc. (Not very exciting.)

Yet, I still  go here occasionally... when I feel like an overpriced sandwich and being crammed next to some squawking McKinney milfs.

Went here on a saturday afternoon. The place was packed! We had to wait several minutes but we didn't mind. We were still tipsy from the brewery tour (See my review!).

My friends who were McKinney-ites recommended this cafe.

Thus after all this waiting we ended up sitting in their "Garage cafe" which is an extension of their restaurant. We ended up doing so and there wasn't a wait there. As it was like a coffee lounge setting. The tables were awkwardly placed as like they were trying to fit more and more tables.

It has a more cafe feel apparently. As i was told by the staff.

    Ambience:
The place was very quirky as it's art and grungy/vintage look was interesting and appealing.

The cafe is very casual as it is a good place to goto for sandwiches on a daily basis. The restaurant has a bar. It looks very scattered.

    Food:
The food was above average. I ordered the "McKinney" sandwich which had delicately thin sliced smoked turkey. Upon the primordial bite you get a soft thinly sliced sandwich. It has an interesting texture to it. The cream cheese spread gives it an interesting sharp contrast in flavors.

I order the chili as a side. The chilli is very delicious. The ground beef is very fine in the chilli, it's slightly on the brackish side but nonetheless enjoyable. It's probably been over-reduced and been sitting in the pot a little too long.

    Service:
It was mediocre. Our squeaky voiced waitress was somewhat attentive. She only managed to make a couple visits back to the table. She seem preoccupied with other things at the moment.

    Overall:
Average meal. Not particularly eye opening food. I may have to go back to try another entree.

    Food 4
    Atmosphere 4.5
    Service 2
    Cleanliness 3
Sunday All Day Breakfast Buffet (on the counter) 1

This place has a couple of really great attributes...NO. 1 is the great location on the square and outside seating for those who like to "people watch".  And NO. 2 would have to be the fried dill pickles!  Not just everybody does justice to this southern treat, but Spoons Cafe takes it up a notch or two.  We ordered a couple of varieties of the sliders which I would definitely order again along with the french fried sweet potatoes...some of the best I've ever had.  The desserts looked fantastic but alas...I just couldn't.  This is a very busy place on a Sunday afternoon.  The seating manager (maybe owner) looked frantic and frazzled in comparison to the lackadaisical attitude of our waitress.  Although I'm only rating Spoons Cafe with a 3, I would definitely go back again when in the area.  So convenient to the shopping and just an interesting and  fun place.

I was in town with the in-laws visiting McKinney to see if it was a viable place for them to move to.  We had heard this "Spoons" place was pretty good and decided to check it out.  There were four adults and my one and a half year old son.  The staff seemed pretty friendly and the atmosphere inside was interesting and fun.

My biggest recommendation to this place is to only go if you have a ton of time to kill.  I posted our arrival on Yelp as a "check in" and went back to see how long we had actually been waiting for our food to show up.  Forty Five Minutes!  Seriously, why does it take so long to prepare a meal?  Do you have any idea how hard it is to keep a toddler occupied when he's hungry for forty five minutes?  I can see why this place is liked by the locals.  The food is pretty good, but the service from the kitchen really leaves something to be desired.  Might be time to hire a new cook to speed things along....

Spoons Cafe is in downtown McKinney, right there on the historic square. And, if you don't know, downtown Mckinney is quite a lot like Mayberry. It's absolutely adorable. Shops, restaurants, pubs, etc.  If you haven't been in the last few years, you should check it out.  Some really cool things have happened in the way of development. There was a time that downtown McKinney was all antique stores a tea shops. Not the case now.

Having said all that, let me also say that Spoons is just the kind of place one would expect to find in such an idyllic setting.

The space is cool, some kind of converted 1920's utility building, I think. There are interesting things (vintage signs and bric a brac) to look at at everywhere. It's bright, colorful and spacious. There is a patio in the front that is extremely desirable on nice days, as it's an up close and personal view of all the happenings on the square. (If it is a patio table you desire and it happens to be a nice day, prepare to arrive early or wait until those who arrived early are finished.)

The service is a little hit or miss. I've been to Spoons 6 or 8 times and I've gotten anything from thoughtful and gracious to what planet is this chick from. Eh, what are you gonna do? I suggest just being really clear as to what you want and exactly how you want it.

The food is good, sometimes great. And that's okay. Spoons isn't trying to, to my knowledge, win any James Beard awards or Michelin stars. It is pretty much what you might expect. Good breakfast, egg dishes (the migas are great), pancakes, etc. Good lunch, sandwiches (the "ham it up" is superb), salads, etc. The fried pickles are outrageous. Rumor has it that their cupcakes alone are worth a visit.

So there you have it... Spoons Cafe. A great little spot in a great little neighborhood.

Well hello Downtown McKinney! Now that we live in "the country", downtown McKinney is our best bet for good food. When craving that almighty brunch, we know that Spoons will always deliver. I honestly can say that this is a great place to get your grub on....and have a little people watching in the process. We always have the best wait people and everyone that works there is extremely friendly. Oh, EAT SOME DESSERT people. You will not regret any of the choices you make.

p.s. dear Spoons chef....will you do me a teeny tiny favor and get me some veggie sausage? That would seal the deal and bump you right on up to 5 glorious stars!

Spoons, why do you have Shiner listed on your menu as an imported beer?  For shame! LOL

Cute place! Great decor, super-friendly staff, and tasty food at a reasonable price.  Great location across from the McKinney Performing Arts Center, smack dab in the middle of McKinney Square.

We came here around noon on a Sunday and only had a 10-15 minute wait for a table.  Sandwiches were good, the pasta salad was good, the black pepper french fries were good, and the pies were dee-lish!  Key lime and buttermilk, we loves you!

My favorite part?  It didn't feel like every other mcrestaurant in Plano, Allen, and McKinney.  Thank you Spoons, for a fine experience.  I'll let the Shiner thing slide...for now. :)

We have gone here for lunch on Saturday and oh my the crowd! Usually the fact you have to wait to be seated .... for lunch! ... is a good signal.

The food was OK even good but let's not call it great. Good enough to go back but I can tell you I know I will never find myself saying "I am craving spoons". So, I can't explain the wait except that it was a beautiful sunny day and downtown McKinney is a great place to walk  around in.

I was going to give them 3 stars but the peanut butter square thing my hubby ordered was to die for - hence the extra start. We will go back for THAT!

And let's not fool ourselves the breakfast menu looked great. I wonder what kind of wait will be awaiting us then.

    Service - 2 Stars
    Food - 3 Stars
Cuteness and City Square Factor - 4 Stars
Really Ugly Courthouse on the Square - 1 Star

Historic McKinney Downtown. Really cute, except they could use a better looking courthouse. The are some really great looking courthouses in Texas, this isn't one of them.

This place sits on the southwest corner and you should know there are free city lots about a block off the square in almost any direction, because there's not much parking on the street.

Nice little place, sat outside under an umbrella at a somewhat rickety table and watched the crowds come and go. This place was packed all morning and into early afternoon. So it was certainly popular and probably doesn't need a review from me to stay in business. However, I intend to have my say, anyway.

My wife just had a scone, they had several flavors available. She said hers. a brown sugar cinnamon, was delicious.($2.50). Sometimes they are too dry, but not this one. Moist throughout. My wife could have eaten a hundred more. (I'm a little skeptical, 90 maybe, but a 100?)

I had a three-egg Western Omelet ($7.95) that was very tasty, and came with a few Cottage Potatoes and a pick-your-bread side of toast. The pan-fried potatoes had a good flavor and nice seasoning, but I had to catsup them up, nonetheless.

My son had a Breakfast Taco of eggs and migas inside a large flour tortilla, ($8.99) and thought it a bit spicy. Hey, they're Migas! They're supposed to by spicy, right?

They are a bakery and had all kinds of cakes and pies and stuff. We had the coconut cream pie $3.25) and the strawberry cake ($4.25). The very large slice of cake was almost too sweet to eat and had lots of frosting. Needless to say I loved it! The coconut filling in the pie was awesomely custardly coconutty. Wasn't thrilled with the whipped cream topping because it wasn't sweet enough to pair well with the custard. The crust was good, though.

Now what keeps this place at a three star instead of four? The service. I really don't think it was the waitresses fault, but they seemed overloaded and we had to wait for more coffee and tea. Maybe it was because we were outside. I wanted butter and jelly for my toast, but gave up waiting and ate it dry. Same problem for my wife with her scone. Can't they bring butter in a little dish or some preserves? If I have to wait to ask for them the stuff, its too late! Eggs cool down quickly, you know.

All in all, we liked it and will go back again but hope for more waitresses or will sit inside.

I've mostly been for breakfast. Everything I've had was good. My favorite thing has to be the migas, but their classic breakfast is also good - thick, crispy bacon that puts places like IHOP's to shame. Also love their Belgian waffle (warning: if you ask for whipped cream you get cool whip). For lunch, I've enjoyed the chicken salad sandwich and BLT. And they have great desserts - love their pies. Finally, I've had good service every time.

This used to be across the street from the Pantry and, like the Pantry, be an order at the counter type of place with a very similar menu, so in my mind I always thought of it as a tad over-priced for what it is. To be fair, the prices are a bit more justified now with the changes they've made, but it's still more than the typical sandwich/salad place. It also gets very crowded, so it's not a quick affair. Finally, parking can be tricky as it's downtown McKinney, but you can usually find something in one of the big lots just outside the square.

Icing is a food group. It's that little triangle at the top of the food pyramid. I know it says "Oil & Fat" but what they really mean is "BUTTERCREAM ICING!" And that's the problem I have with Spoons.

They supplied the cake for the hungover bridal tea. The cake itself was okay. Better than a mix, not as good as some others I've had. But the icing was a flop. Yes, I know proper women do not really eat the icing--when have I ever aspired to be proper?! NEVER. I'm an icing eating gluttonous slob and I will eat my icing and any left on unattended plates near mine.

The icing tasted like a powdered sugar brick. That was it. And though it was soft enough to chew I'm pretty sure it was hard enough to mold a to-scale David.

Hmmm...to-scale David made out of buttercream icing...that would be photo worthy, kinda like the butter statues at the State Fair.

Spoons is a very cute little spot on the square in McKinney.  When we first walked in I noticed one thing in particular...it smells like bacon.  I love bacon so this smell was good with me, but it does kind of attach to your clothes for the rest of the day, like Subway bread.  Anyway, there is a list of healthy and not so healthy items.  I went with the soup and salad combo.  I had the vegatable chicken soup and the Santa Fe salad.  The soup was very good but the salad was honestly passable.

Everyone else seemed to be very happy, especially those that ordered the grown-up grilled cheese.  Darn it for trying to be healthy.  One of my co-eaters/workers grabbed a platter of cookies to go and I tried the fresh out of the oven treats.  These cookies are so good, I considered five stars for them alone.  But, then I remembered our aloof waitress...so nah, three stars it is.  I will definitely be back but next time, I will know what not to order.
