Sometimes you see a worn-down roadside shack in the South offering BBQ and it's a slice of heaven...and sometimes it's not.  Tastee Hut is definitely the latter.  I am almost positive that the BBQ sold here comes from a can.  Seriously.  At best it's just pork cooked in a slow cooker and then drowned in a flavorless sauce.  In any case, it may as well be mystery meat.  Honestly, it tasted more like a very bland sloppy joe.  The sweet potato sticks are terrible...though at the very least, they don't seem to be sold anywhere else.  Imagine, if you will, a fried mozzarella stick, except, instead of mozzarella on the inside, substitute sweet potato puree that tastes like baby food in both flavor and consistency.  I dunno...maybe the fired chicken is that good, but I doubt it, and I don't plan on stopping here again to find out.

    Real review:
En route to SC, we passed this place and kicked ourselves for not stopping.  So we stopped on our way back to NJ.

It was 90F or so outside, even with the wind which was simply more hot air.

The fried chicken was fantastic--at least a 4*.  Crispy skin, tender chicken.  But that's where things fell down.

First of all, it's slow.  Very slow.  Island time has nothing on the this place.  A family of 5 getting soft serve ice cream waited 10 minutes for 5 cones.  I am not joking, as I was sweltering on the bench outside waiting for our order and watching it happen.  This is for soft serve ice cream from a machine that shoots out a cone in 20 seconds or less.

So from that perspective, you can be assured that the fried chicken is fresh and made to order.

We also ordered an iced tea, and waited.  And waited some more.  After 10 minutes, Jim asked whether we could have that portion of the order.  It was 99% ice served in a styrofoam take away soup container, and I finished it in 10 seconds, then pouted.  So much for 16oz of iced tea.  I was getting grumpy.  Then moved back into the car to sit in air conditioning.

10 minutes later, Jim arrived with his pulled pork sandwich and the incredible fried chicken.  The fries were meh at best, and not hot.  The chicken, yum!  The pulled pork, too sweet, served with coleslaw on a standard hamburger bun.

Then we made the mistake of ordering an ice cream sundae.  It took 8 minutes to get soft serve and a scoop of sweetened pineapple into a cup.

But the place was cheap, and we'd probably head back for the fried chicken if we choose to take 95 down again.  The place does have character and everyone dining there seemed to have a great time and enjoy the food.

But it took AGES to get food.

I don't think we spent more than $12 total, so yes, it's really cheap too.

Go for the fried chicken, then sit in your car unless it happens to be under 90F outside.
