I am surprised there aren't more reviews for this place.  I was only in Durango for a short stay, but the impression I got from several locals was that the Summit is THE place to go for live music.  During my night o' drinking in Durango, my friend and I ended back at this place 3 different times.

We immediately like the atmosphere.  You have to walk upstairs to get into the actual bar area...at the top of the first set of stairs you end up on a small floor with a stage and a small dance area (this floor seems to extend into another part of the bar with pool tables), if you continue upstairs you end up in an open bar area filled with beautifully carved wood tables, benches and railings.

I wasn't too impressed with the beer tap selection (read that as a very spoiled Coloradoan that is used to a wide selections on tap) but the beer selection certainly didn't keep us away!  The bartender was friendly and although at times he was busy, he wasn't ever to busy to remind us tourists AGAIN what was on tap.  ha!
There was no food, but he encouraged us to order pizza from downstairs and bring it up.  We didn't do this, but it was nice to know the option was there.

A great jam band (whose name escapes me) was playing that night and we thoroughly enjoyed them.  The sound was fine, not too loud where we couldn't talk, but loud enough to actually hear the talent of the musicians. Once they were done playing, dance music (MJ, Prince, etc) came on and we certainly took advantage of the small dance floor to partake in some drunken dancing.

Did I mention there was no cover charge.  Not sure is this is always the way, but it was when I went.  All in all, it is a bar that I would frequent all the time if I lived in Durango and certainly the next time I go back I will find myself there in search of live music!

As far as bars go The Summit is one of your typical College/Locals hangout crossover bars. I played there the other night at the KDUR Who Night and I have to admit I wasn't impressed with the place. The nicest thing about the Bar is the natural Wooden railing that surrounds the upper deck where the bar is. The area near the Bathrooms smelled like a Mexican Cantina, you know the kind that has an open trough for men to pis in. In other words it smelled pretty bad and that was early in the evening before anyone got there. I wouldn't take your first date there if you want to make a good impression.
