This place is great. It's simple American food done well (meat loaf, burgers, etc) for a great price. Small but solid selection of beers on tap. There is usually a crowd of people my age and I always have a good time. I think there's banks sometimes which is a plus and I just learned they have 1$ oysters so I'll have to try that.
Review Source:Hearty portions of 99-esque fare, dumbed down and dirtied up, but enjoyable nonetheless.
It's a blank tavern, oddly dismal even with the chipper host/server at the door and a handful of TVs behind the bar. It's so nondescript, I could probably ask a kid who's never been inside a pub to draw what they think it'd look like, and whaddya know? Spot on.
There's a part of me (a big part) that wishes I'd ordered seafood instead of my BBQ turkey tips. I don't know why, the options just sounded more appealing. But the gobble echoed true; the turkey who lost won eventually. And for a $12 plate, it was sweet and meaty and tasted just fine. The side of zucchini (or choose your own daily vegetable) is tender and well-seasoned.
Not that anybody is accusing Woburn Center of hiding away culinary gems from the hungry masses, but should I ever pass through amidst a fear stomach grumblin', I wouldn't not stop by Tanner Tavern again. Take that as you will.
Ok, my roommate and I were in the mood for burgers so we decided to try this place after the reviews on here. Â
We walked in and got seated right away; the place is very nice on the inside. We ordered some appetizers nachos and an order of buffalo fingers. Â The nachos were very cheesy and ok, not great they didn't have salsa just Pico de Gallo. The buffalo fingers were good...but I've had better. My roommate says they weren't spicy enough
We ordered our hamburgers I got mine Medium Well, my roommate got his Medium. Â They both came out well done and very dry. Â Wasn't impressed at all, I ate some fries a few bites of the burger and called it a night.
It's a good place for apps, and the pizza looked really yummy---just not a good burger joint. Â My search continues for good burgers in the Wakefield, Woburn area.
I used to not like the Tanner Tavern, but then I thought about why I didn't like it. I didn't come up with any reasons.
I never have a bad experience. The beers are good, the food is good, the prices are good, the music is good (though a bit low at some points, the manager has REALLY good taste in music and he needs to turn it up!), and the atmosphere is good.
Every time I go to the Tanner Tavern, I always either get Sea Dog Blueberry Ale or, if it's in season, a Pumpkinhead Shipyard. I always eat the Lobster Mac & Cheese (DELICIOUS!). And for appetizers, I really like the Parmesan Truffle Fries. Yumm-o!
Okay, now that I thought of it, I did come up with one bad thing. The parking situation. I can rarely find a spot! But that's not the bar's fault.
Anywho...
Tanner Tavern just added a new back patio this past year. It's great! There's a little bar up there, but no one was using it, and it just feels like home (because I really think they're using someone's porch that lives above the bar). They even accommodate to people in wheel chairs so they can go up to the patio.
Now I really want to go there now, but it's closing for the night :(
The worst service I've ever had!
Took my girl here on a date when we first started going out and this place takes the cake of THE WORST SERVICE I've ever had. Â We ordered a beer and a mixed drink from this air head waitress along with an XL order of buffalo chicken tenders app. with a burger and fish and chips for entrees all at once. Â So we got our drinks and appetizer 15 minutes later. Â Then waited....and waited....and waited. Â The waitress disappeared for almost 45 minutes. Â I was pissed, as it was Friday night and was on a date, and wanted to have a few drinks. Â She never came back to offer more drinks or refill waters or tell us that the kitchen was backed up. Â We were stranded. Â Right as I pulled out a $20 to put on the table and walk out she comes with our food. Â I said we were leaving so she got the manager. Â This kid was a dope, he apologized and said the waitress was brand new and he only hired her because she was hot! Can you believe this! Â This is how you treat people? Â He offered to buy us a round and I was straving so we ate the food quickly, paid and left. Â Wow the worst. Â And the buffalo chicken tenders were a joke. My girl was horrified
I will never come back, this place is a complete joke.
I have food conversations with people all the time. Â Several years ago Lobster Mac N Cheese made it into my life. Â I am not a big fan of ripping the thing apart and making a mess so lobster was not for me for a long time. Â Once I discovered lobster pie and then lobster mac and cheese, that all changed.
I saw a very favorable review of the lobster mac n cheese at a place in Los Angeles called the Blue Palm Brew House on Hollywood Blvd. Â I went there with one of my best buddies Marko and they had a good lobster mac and cheese and so the bar was set. Â I heard about the Tanner Tavern Lobster Mac N Cheese within the last year so I had been waiting for the planets to align to try it. Â
I found myself in Woburn and hungry at the correct time this last weekend. Â I went to the Tanner Tavern with a purpose. Â I ate at the bar and had to wait a bit for the server to acknowledge me and get me setup.(minus 5 points) Â The server was nice when she finally got to me though and they made sure my drink was consistently full.(+ 5 points) Â The Lobster Mac N Cheese is listed as an entree and was about $18. Â The thing I do not like about lobster is that many places really stick it to you on price when in reality it is not that expensive to buy and prepare. Â I ordered it up and it came with a salad which was not really memorable. Â
The entree plate came and it was delicious. Â The lobster tasted good, bread crumb springles tasted great and the lobster that made it into the plate was good. Â The problem with this dish was too much Mac N Cheeese and not enough lobster. Â
For $18 I want a good amount of lobster not a plate of pasta with some lobster garnish which is how I felt it came out. Â The solutions to this are many, a lower price point, smaller dish and higher lobster to macaroni ratio. Â While it was tasty I do not think it was a great value and probably would not seek it out again here.
My friend and I had been looking for somewhere new to try, and we were roaming around downtown Woburn, and this caught our eye(s). It looked very promising from the outside, and a quick glance inside showed it to have a nice set up, and not be very busy.
We were seated right away, and our waitress recited a huge list of beers on tap. Really great selection! We were also informed that pizzas are half price on Fridays from 4-8. Excellent! We asked about the sizing and since it sounded like a small pizza we decided to try two flavors: potato artichoke onion (wow!) and hamburger onion. Don't be fooled- the food is plentiful. I didn't find it small at all, and we ended up halving our pizzas to take home to eat later.
My pizza was the potato artichoke onion and it was awesome. So delicious! It's sauceless and really tasted like a cheesy potato dish. My friend got the hamburger onion and it was pretty good. I found it a bit greasy, but I may have been spoiled since mine was so good.
The prices on everything were great. We spent around $23. On Saturdays, their promotion is half priced hamburgers. We may try to make a special trip to try that out one of these Saturdays!
We were there for my mother's 80th birthday dinner. We had ten cent wings, oysters, nachos and potato skins. They were all very good. Then we had salads, steaks, fried clams and burgers. Everyone seemed to enjoy their food.
The thing that made the night was our server, Laura. She was attentive, funny and overall just wonderful.
We'll be back for sure!
Went there with a group of coworkers for lunch. Â I was really surprised at how empty it was, and a few of my coworkers were worried. Â The menu is actually pretty diverse, far better than your standard pub grub as other reviewers had described. Â Each of us ordered something different. Â Burgers were huge and neither guy was able to finish his, the salads were fresh and well made, turkey tips were a hit with the boss, and haddock sandwich was also met with positive reviews. Â The only negative feedback was for the meatloaf, which came looking like 3 small hamburgers with brown gravy.
I will definitely return, I loved the feel of the place and it took me back to when I was at WHS in the 80s with sports memoribilia on the walls. Â Very clean, nice service, and reasonably priced (we chipped in $14 each including tip for 7 people).
I called 3 days in advance to make reservations for 13 for an early Saturday dinner, got their answering machine; same thing 2 days prior, the day before I waited to leave a voice message & a woman finally answered. I told her I was hoping to make reservations for 13 on the following day, this is exactly how she responded:
"Are you SERIOUS? You're just calling NOW? Is that fair to US"?
I know it was a large party, before xmas - if they couldn't accommodate us she could've said so, why be rude? I told the woman I was happy to find another place, but by then she was singing a different tune & telling me she was just kidding (ya, right). It's worth mentioning when we walked in at 4:50 - the place was nearly empty, which i found amusing.
I'm not gonna trash the whole night b/c of one woman w/ horrible phone etiquette. On the bright side: our waitress was very nice & the food was perfectly good, high-end pub-fair.
I was in Woburn from Los Angeles for business. It was a 24 hour trip and I need some food late but didn't want to go to your favorite chain restaurants. I was very pleased with this place. it was local, on a cute street and prices were totally agreeable. I had the clam chowder and crab cakes and was very pleased. My friend had the lobster Mac. Also very good. Beers were cheaper than LA so we were happy! Thanks for some good food on a short, cold rainy visit to MA.
Review Source:Bar food/over priced mediocre food with a crappy bar enviornment, and horrible decore. Â Usually the bartenders are nice, but there is one big dude that walks around like he has a pole up his you know what. Â He is consistently rude. Â
The only benefit to this bar is the "side room" where they have live bands on occasion. Â Food is the same (so don't bother), but atmostphere and decore are way better. Â
Don't bother if you're looking for anything more than a bud light and nachos.
I agree with the comment below- pub food basically sums it up. This place is just okay; it will do in a pinch. Went for dinner and nothing was outstandingly great or horribly awful. Nice beer list and decent drink menu. Â Â
Calamari and Sweet potato fries were good, both were nice and crunchy. Â Caesar salad and burgers were decent. Service was good; staff was friendly and attentive; food arrived quickly. Lots of tables- no wait on a Friday night. Â
Don't think I'd rush back here for dinner any time soon.
Pub food. Â Straightforward, with no real pretenses. Â Accompanied with ice cold beer and you get what you (should've) came for. Â Good atmosphere to boot.
The cheeseburger was pretty well put together, although it showed up on a roll that was a little too big. Â Tasty appetizers and sides.
I have lived in Woburn for a year, but somehow have never been here before. Â I was impressed. Â Good service, good food, good atmosphere. Â I will definetly be back.
The waitress was nice and really attentive.
The food was not fancy but good. Â I had a french dip and my wife had a lobster roll. Â A lot of options for sides including good asparagus and sweet potato fries.
Seems like a good spot to catch a game. Â I will be back.
I'd like to give Tanner 2.5 stars, oh well. This would be a good place to have a few drinks and watch the game but the food is kind of lackluster. It's also a little expensive for what you get. This is pub food after all, in Woburn. But the atmosphere is nice, our waitress was very friendly and helpful, and the music was good.
We did the BOGO appetizers, and chose Buffalo Tenders and the Grilled Shrimp. The portions were ridiculously small -- I was unimpressed. There were literally only four tenders on the plate and they weren't very good, they had a funny taste. The grilled shrimp, although delicious, only came with two pieces of garlic bread that had to be cut in half to share, and you couldn't sop up the yummy broth that they arrived in because there wasn't any extra bread!
I was surprised to find that they give you generous portions for your entrees. We all ordered burgers for our meals, and I got the Bacon Cheeseburger. It was cooked to my liking but very greasy, and again had a funny taste. The fries were those big steak fries and they weren't cooked thoroughly enough, so I didn't eat many of those. The coleslaw was runny and a total snooze.
Again, this is a cool place to hang out and have a couple, but go across the street to Tremonte for dinner beforehand!
The atmosphere here is great! It's  a great place to relax and unwind, and they have a really good beer selection. The bartenders are usually friendly and pretty talkative (plus they will switch the tv to different channels when you ask).
The food is the only drawback. Although it is pretty good bar food- it is priced like a higher end restaurant. We have (mostly) enjoyed our food every time we have been, and then been surprised at the bill at the end of the night.
It is worth checking out- especially because they often have different specials that will bring the prices down.
Great staff & ownership. A real hometown bar atmosphere that was long needed in this area. Great music on the weekends, plenty of big screen TV's to catch a game. Try the pizzas, great New England clam chowder, solid seafood & steaks. Best Lobster Mac n Cheese I've ever had if you catch it on special.
Review Source:Went here for dinner on a Friday night. Got right in around 8:30 p.m. Â Our waitress Danielle was great. She let us take our time ordering, suggested a beer when I asked, and kept us informed on the status of our meal.
My boyfriend wasn't thrilled with his dinner, some kind of mixed grill meat entree, but he still ate the whole thing. I had a mix of seafood, scallops, shrimp and haddock. It was great and the sweet potato fries were delicious.
On tap beer selection was good, and the service was pretty quick. Â Danielle suggested we go over to the bar side after dinner to watch the cover band play and they were really great. Â We ordered a few drinks and had a good time.
The bar side was definitely understaffed for a busy Friday. The servers were bringing drinks, food, and even making their own drinks. When it came time to pay we had to fight at the bar to get our waitresses attention. Â Danielle told me they were hiring and I can see why, they needed more people!
The bathroom was kind of gross though. Not really dirty, but it looked like someone had just started throwing toilet paper. It was unexpected and pretty ridiculous.
Overall this was a pleasant surprise, and my first time dining out for dinner in Woburn. Would definitely go back.
I finally had dinner here a few months ago and it was awesome. I went on a weekend too and were lucky that we didn't have to wait.
The service was friendly and quick. The cocktail menu is very good.
I had the mushroom raviolis with veal marsala. It was delicious! Dinners come with garden or caesar salad. Food quality was better then I expected based on a couple reviews. I'd definitely go back again.
Great place for families, kids, couples, groups...
There's not a lot to say, the place is clean, nice, good ambiance, big TV's, good beer selection and food is pretty good. Â Its just another Bar, but Its one of the few GOOD options in Main St. Woburn. Â Prices are Average ($8 for a burger, $15 for a steak)
Well, seems like there was enough to say after all.
Interesting to find a local spot like this in Woburn. Alot of selection, seafood seemed really good.
Steak was cooked well, seafood food dish (Seafood Romano) had ton of lobster, scallops and shrimp they were all cooked to perfection. I wouldn't recommend traveling to Woburn for it but if you are around and not feeling like Brazilian food, definitely a good alternative.
I learned something last night. Bar food can truly, madly, completely... suck.
Sure, I've had the bad wings here, the crappy fried mozzarella there... but I have always been able to find at least one edible thing... until last night.
I stopped in at The Tanner Tavern for a few brews with a group of friends the other night. A gang of us were hungry and thirsty. We ordered wings, fried mozzarella, potato skins and some things I think were supposed to be soft tacos... I don't know... mostly salsa in a soft shell... I hope it wasn't supposed to be a quesadilla, because that would have been the worst. quesadilla. ever.
Wings: served hot, too hot to pick up. Grilled, dry, flavorless, not meaty at all. Maybe a hint of teriyaki?
Skins: hot, weird flat puck-like creepy looking things. I actually had to ask someone what they were. Flavorless and greasy. Too effin' hot. More like orange wax applique than any kind of cheese and not even a suggestion of bacon. Thimble of sour cream.
Fried Mozzarella: greasy, flat floppy triangles with a poor excuse for marinara.
The quesa-taco things? Let's just say that when all the other food had been eaten, they were still on the plate.
Maybe the full meals served in the restaurant area are better, but based on my sampling of the bar fare, I'll not be finding out.
The bar tender was very nice, very friendly, and very attentive. While I'm willing to return to drink a beer or two at this place (but only if my friends insist) I shan't be partaking of the so-called comestibles.
A great spot to abandon all hope of ever accomplishing anything in your life. Â The food is mediocre and the location is horrible because it is located in Woburn. Â
Seeing someone trying to make a restaurant in Woburn look upscale is like watching a monkey ride a bicycle.....he can do it, but it just doesn't look right.
I ate at the bar tonight and ordered the pork chops with vinegar peppers which came with a Cesar salad. The portion was 2 large chops cooked to order. The doneness was perfect, the taste was fair, too oily and not enough sharpness from the vinegar peppers.
Sitting at the bar at 5:30 on a Wednesday night was not that great. The staff congregates and chats at the end of the bar. The manager was calling in orders to the purveyor. This was a bit annoying and inconsiderate towards the guests.
This is one of the better local restaurants around. Â A very typical new england townie restaurant/bar.
I was here with a large group of people recently - there were tons of us - and the waiters were wicked cool about it and set us up in the adjacent function room - we had it all to ourselves. Â It was great. Â Fireplace was going, people were able to get up and talk to each other. Â It was just good stuff.
The food was all right too - and they bring the drinks on as well. Â We had a great time and this is now our go-to place for big get-togethers.
I went here for appetizers and beers about a week ago to watch the pre-season Pats v. Jets game because I heard there was a giant tv in the back room and was looking for somewhere new (read: closer to home) to watch the game.
The giant tv wasn't on when we got there. Â However, we decided to stay since we were already there and the game had started and was being displayed on all of the bar televisions. Â The cover band started to play shortly after the game started, which was fine. Â But as more people showed up, they crowded the bar and it was near impossible to see a television. Â I wouldn't recommend this place for a game day outing unless you KNOW the big screen is going to be on. Â Anyway, onto the food.
We got the stuffed mushrooms, potato skins, and black bean dip. Â I only had the potato skins and black bean dip. Â They were pretty good, Â but I didn't feel they were anything to write home about. Â Black bean dip is a nice change of pace for an appetizer (as opposed to spinach and artichoke dip) but I wasn't blown away by it or the pita chips that were given for dipping. Â I'd say the potato skins were about average, which isn't a bad thing. Â Potato skins are usually pretty safe for an appetizer. Â They're hard to screw up.
The service, however, was great. Â They didn't have a waitress in the back room, but the bartenders came over to take our orders since we were sitting at a table and the bar was packed (since that was really the only place to sit and really see a television).
I wouldn't highly recommend it, but I would go back if it were suggested to me.
I love their Shepherd's Pie. Â I also love the Sante Fe Shrimp Salad that my girlfriend got! Â Both were delicious. Â We came in for a late lunch at around 2pm after we had just drove nearly 4-hours from NYC. Â It was a great way to relax and recoup from the drive.
When we walked in, it was really quiet and a hostess was no where in sight. Â We seated ourselves and it seemed that besides a kitchen staff, the bartender was taking care of the whole establishment! Â But that didn't really hinder our experience. Â They have the usual menu listings of burgers, salads, and pastas but what caught my eye was the Shepherd's Pie. Â I inquired of its character and the one-woman restaurant replied that it was the neighborhood favorite and that everyone ordered it no matter what time of day. Â Boy was she right! Â It was absolutely delicious in every way possible. Â The melted cheese and the loads of meat were fantastic. Â My girlfriend's shrimp salad was also good too. Â We also shared a bowl of New England Clam Chowder which was also good. Â I should note that their complimentary garlic bread is amazing. Â All it is is a fresh loaf of bread with olive oil, freshly cut garlic, and oregano. Â Beautiful. Â
The one knock that I will say about the place is that their water tastes like garbage and so does their Diet Coke (which I specifically ordered to avoid the water). Â I don't know if that's how MA water tastes but dayum son! Â Go clean your pipes. Â Seriously.
I must confess since I started dating someone who lives in downtown Woburn I have become quite the townie!! Well, at least in the sense that I am actually spending more time in the center trying out the local restaurants.
I was initially impressed by the look and feel of the Tavern. The dark mahogany wood and dim lighting has a gentle romantic atmosphere. The few times I have gone it wasn't busy so rest assured you won't have to wait for a table. The waitstaff is attentive (but not super friendly) and so far everything I have tried from the menu has been delicious. The mussels were soooo yummy, my boyfriend and I were scooping out the broth with the shells! And the Mediterrean Pizza is full of flavor  Also, their sweet potato fries are great.. I recommend it. Try it!!
Ahhh the Tanner Tavern in the heart of Woburn. Home of the Woburn High School Tanners. This is a very nice and spacious bar/restaurant right in the downtown of Woo-town.
Always friendly service and the food selection is great, not to mention delicious. I am a sucker for the chicken fingers.
sorry this place doesnt even deserve a star, but i give to them for being scummy. My cousin rented out a room for a party and the paid for "buffet" didnt last for more than an hour even though we had the space and food for about 6 hours.
Ok so the food wasnt horrible, but it was your basic bar food and was very scant. Other than that everything else about this place sucked. The wait staff, the bartenders, the parking (lack thereof) and the management.
They shut everyone off from the bar about 3 hours earlier than they were supposed to yet they still demanded payment for a party that they couldn't even accommodate. This caused a huge issue with basically everyone, and the bitchy bartenders laughed about it, i mean, they were the ones that didnt get the tips that they could have nor did they sell what they could have. It was really bad. One guy, i dont even know who he was was such a jerk and macho because he was dealing with a skinny girl (the one paying for the party) and he was just a total pig.
I will NEVER go here again and im sure none of the 50 people that were with us would go to this scummy place again. They always say in marketing that people wont spread the word about great service, but they will about a horrible experience, and this my friends will go down in the books as one of the worst experiences.
Its really too bad because this place has what it takes to be nice, but with rotten attitudes that they had, it just ruined everything that could have been :-(
So i am doing a small update as the stories i heard today add more to the drama. The manager or whatever he was apparently pushed someone who was holding a baby and yelled at a bunch of grandparents. Real nice.
I miss living in Woburn and being able to walk here and meet with friends for a drink & some food.
Recently renovated...and it's gorgeous. Â The lighting is perfect..the temperature is always comfortable..and this place has some AMAZING calamari. Â It's priced right ($7.99) and so delicious. Â Friends and I have argued over the last piece. Â Also comes with banana pepper rings..YUMMY!!
I've also had their oysters on the half shell and those were perfect. Â You'll get a large platter covered in shaved ice with lemon, horseradish and cocktail sauce. Â
The only time I wasn't impressed with this place was when I tried their Capri salad. Â Not enough mozzarella, and the balsamic was WAY overpowering. Â
also good choices - 14oz. sirloin...it was cooked PERFECT! Â And their risotto is also very, very good.
I can't wait to go back!
With a huge menu ranging from upscale entrees and appetizers to comfort foods, spacious bar (actually, two bars), classy-yet-understated ambiance, and non-cramped dining area--the Tanner Tavern is a welcome change from the plethora of chain restaurants out there.
Every Friday when the boyfriend and I are trying to figure out where we'd like to go for dinner, we always find ourselves wishing a new town with nice new restaurants would pop up out of nowhere. We're soooo bored with the same old selections . . . Tanner Tavern was a great find.
Portions are generous and for what you get, entrees are reasonably priced (our seafood entree came with two sides plus a caesar salad and some yummy bread served with a garlic-infused oil) for less than $20 per person. Service was professional and with just the right amount of attentiveness. We'll definitely be back!
While the view is nothing to get excited about, the tables alongside the windows are quite nice! (And the booths look super cozy and intimate.)
