don't let the fancy decor intimidate you. lots of different people eat here and the food is really good. i had the smoked salmon and arugula salad and it was delicious. hubby was unimpressed with his fish burrito. the service was friendly.

The Tavern itself is a very pleasant space, with tons of light wood, nice windows looking onto Salem Green and high ceilings. The lunchtime sandwiches my wife and I had were mediocre, fish enchilada and fish sandwich. The sweet potato fries were the mushy kind.... its hard to screw up sweet potato fries by this place did. Others have complained about the service. We weren't in any sort of rush, and so I wasn't troubled by the fact that the food took a while to get to us. My only complaint was that the waiter kept referring to me and my wife, both well into our 60's as "guys". It kind of ruined the nice atmosphere of the place. I will say the choice of draft beers was impressive. I chose the Harpoon summer, but there were others that would have worked for me as well. Don't go to the Tavern at the Hawthorne for the food, you'll be disappointed.

Went on a Friday afternoon on Salems off season in March. There was only one other couple in the restaurant when we walked in. I was very excited to go because this place ( and the entire Hawthorn Hotel) had that old spooky vibe I was looking for in a Salem experience. The decor was elegant, but of an older taste. I felt like I was in a movie at times.

There was only two workers in the restaurant. One waiter and one bartender. However there was nobody in there are this particular time. So service was not a problem for us.

Let me just say the food was awesome. Now I had a simple cheeseburger with sweet potato fries. However they were both incredible. You would be surprised how many places can not make sweet potatoe fries. And my burger was cooked exactly how I asked. But the real gem of this place was my boyfriends dish. Pumpkin Ravioli! Yes! I have been looking for that dish everywhere! Only had it once somewhere else, but I have never found it at a restaurant were it was an actual entree on a classy menu. I bite into it, and all I could taste was Halloween! Okay a bit over dramatic... but it was seriously incredible. We were tempted to order more to go just so I could bring it home for my family to taste. I love Halloween. So eating those in the beautifully haunted hawthorne hotel just really tickled my fancy. I can not wait to go back! I am not even a pumpkin person! But this was seriously good.

One of the biggest perks about living in Salem is The Tavern on the Green. Always welcoming. Elegant but relaxed. Often a roaring fire in the fire place. Wonderful food. Friendly and helpful staff. Often see friends or people you'd like to know. During really bad storms, they are always open and we neighbors walk there and hang out over excellent red wine! Then there's the view of Salem Common. Free parking. You get to stroll through the Hawthorne Hotel's gorgeous lobby to get there...Enough said? Just go!

The service here is TERRIBLE. We were ignored when walking in, and our waitress had a terrible attitude. Her posture, eye rolls, lack of communication, and snootiness were unacceptable. We had some basic questions for her, and she looked at us without saying anything for about three minutes just shaking her head in confusion. She was clearly waiting for us to look away and leave her alone. This place doesn't make you feel like a guest or a customer, they make you feel like you are imposing on them and it was extremely uncomfortable from start to finish.

I don't think it could get any worse due mainly to the service. The drinks were no different than what you would get at your local dive bar, and they were pricey. We ordered a diet soda, margarita and a glass of wine for close to $30. The food was OK, and is the only reason for the two stars instead of one.

Save yourself the aggravation and skip Tavern on the Green. Nathaniel's (the other restaurant located inside the Hawthorne Hotel) was not much better.

This review focuses on the Taven on the Hawthorne Hotel property.

We dined here during a busy Sunday. Yes, it was restaurant week and, yes, the overflow obviously impacted the Tavern, still...

First off - the food was great. We shared the sundried tomato and artichoke dip - amazing. Warn, gooey, with a lovely breading crust. I had a small poriton of the smoked mozzarella pasta which was lovely and my companion had the meatloaf which he found very satisfying.

    UNFORTUNATELY:

My dining partner never received his beer. FIrst, he was told the keg was being changed and he'd have a pint "as soon as possible. After about 15 minutes, I reminded our server that he still did not have a drink. She apologized, saying the keg wasn't cooperating. She brought him a Sam Adams with the promise she'd bring him a draft as soon as it was available. Suffice to say, pint never arrived.

Our bread arrived moment before our appetizers. The bread was an olive focaccia, which would have been okay if they'd mentioned there were olives in it. (I hate olives. HATE. A story for another time...)

Not long after our appetizer arrived (we now had a fulll basket of bread and a 2/3 full appetizer plate on the table) our entrees arrived.

The food, as I mentioned, was lovely. But NOT ONCE did our server stopy by to check on us. Both of us drainedour water glasses dry. I would have liked nother cocktail. My partner would have like the draft beer promised to himm. Some plates cleared our of our way would have been nice..,

Clearly the restaurant was experiencing a bad night, if the server/manager apologies to the left/right/back to us was any indication. And being in the business, I know it happens and I'm OK with it. But don't ignore your tables and don't act frustrated, flustered or pissed if new parties come in or existing parties make special requests.

I'll probably visit the hotel again - the full-service restaurant this time - because I know how lovely they make it during the holidays. But I was severely disappointed in my experience in the tavern and I'll think twice about going again.

Terrible, terrible service made worse by sub-par food. My sister and I went early on a Wednesday evening when the tavern was not particularly busy. However, we were ignored by our server until I flagged him down to order sliders and two cocktails. The cocktails arrived 15 minutes later, martini glasses a little more than half-full. I opted not to complain, as the drinks were tasty and I suspect it wasn't the bartender but rather the server who spilled some of the missing contents while carrying the drinks over--both glasses where wet and sticky on the outside. In retrospect, I should have taken the bad service with the drinks as an omen of things to come.

The sliders finally arrived 30 minutes after we placed the order, with ice cold buns and lukewarm beef. As these were appetizers, we still planned for dinner and again I had to flag down the waiter, who then asked, "You're going to order something else?" Wow. Not a very polite question to ask two ladies. At this point, I'm too tenacious for my own good and confirmed that, yes, we wanted dinner. He left with a promise to return shortly to take our orders, but leaves us for another 20 minutes while taking--and delivering--orders to the other two tables with customers before returning to us.

We order and our salads arrive surprisingly quick for this joint, within 10 minutes. The salad is of the mixed variety one gets out of a bag at Costco, coated in suspicious tasting dressing, and the tomatoes are sour, squishy, and on the verge of rotting. That finally did it for us.

We cancelled our dinner order, paid the tab, and bolted. What a waste of nearly an hour and half of my life in that place, not to mention the $30 thrown away on half-empty cocktails and cold sliders. Please, avoid this place until the managment gets their act together: you're just throwing away money at the Tavern.

Casual, comfortable place to have very good reasonably priced food. I love when the fireplace is lit in the winter! My favorite bartender is Allison, she is very friendly even in the middle of October.

Slow slow slow service. Took about 30min+ to get appetizer and an hr to get food. Good amount of people here but no where near packed. The food was average, nothing special. Never returning and don't recommend

I took some friends of mine from out of state to the Tavern on the Green at the Hawthorne Hotel this evening for dinner as I have been constantly raving about it and thought that they'd like it, too. All three had haddock - two fried and one baked - and all three of them said that it was THE best haddock they'd ever had.

Our waitress, Lisa, did a great job insuring that we were never without more water or anything else that we required and the atmosphere was - as always - comfortable and relaxing. Two big thumbs up for a wonderful meal and evening!

Decor - wonderful, old, quaint, historic bar in an early 20th century hotel with over-sized and comfortable chairs.

Service - dire. Both at the bar and at the tables.

We sit at the bar first in an attempt to order a couple of drinks. First the two female bartenders ignore us (there were maybe 6 other people in the bar), but they continue to chat, chat, chat away to each other. When we finally get their attention and a drink list, we are then ignored some more. On the verge of us walking out, one of them comes over and takes our drink order. We pay and move to a table to eat.

But guess what? We are ignored some more at the table! Now maybe we don't fit the demographic here, but when the table to the left of us get served, then the table to the right of us get served, it makes me start to think, what's up?

    Food - uninspiring.

After flagging down a server, we order the BL(A)T - A BLT with avocado ($11). Save your money (+$2) and get the regular BLT. The menu description should read, BLT with a hint of avocado served with McDonald's fries. My girlfriend ordered the Mesclun Salad. I was amazed that the difference in price between the small ($9.50) and the large ($10.25) was so minimal. Upon receiving the large salad, it was obvious - the plate was all mesclun and minimal bleu cheese, cranberries and pecans. Not sure I saw a crouton. Pretty expensive bowl of lettuce. Other tables got bread with their salads, nope, not us. No-one checked on our meal until we were all done and then she comes over with her dessert sales pitch - yeah, no.

The only bright spot in an otherwise dreary service experience was a hearty goodbye from another server as we were leaving. I wish he had been our server.

I kind of have a "thing" for historic hotels, so while wandering around Salem on a blustery fall evening, I decided to stop in for a drink.

We must have looked a little weather beaten because we were seated right in front of the fireplace. It was nice and toasty. And allowed for a great view of the entire place. Not sure what kind of event was going on in the hotel, but there was some great people watching.

We just stayed for one drink - apparently there's a martini of the week - be sure to ask about it if it's not mentioned. Can't remember the name of what I had but it was excellent.

This is a must see in Salem!

Since we moved to Salem, this place has become a favorite for meeting with business clients at lunch, or relaxing with friends for dinner.

We love seeing Bryant, who always remembers us and makes us feel like family. He even managed to get us seating during Halloween weekend (Thank you!) .

Our favorite waiter is Ceni, who is always friendly, polite and attentive, no matter how busy he is, and who apparently is the employee of the month. Well done!.

Twice in the past couple of months the General Manager, Juli Lederhaus, stopped by the table personally. This is a place that cares about its customers, and in return, they've earned our loyalty.

We return again & again, for warm hospitality, great food and service, and classic, cozy ambiance.

This Yelp is for a spring trip.--The month of May in Salem has mutable weather---cool, rainy days turn to humid, warm days, and sometimes all of that can occur on the same day. Tavern on the Green within the historic Hawthorne Inn offers the comfort of slipping into a spacious, well-used den of a loved home, no matter the weather. I enjoy sitting at the bar and ordering a complete meal in the middle of the afternoon. Fresh, broiled fish with vegies and mash plus a Iocal Ipswich ale. It's my experience that I am served more quickly at the bar.

Sitting at the bar I can focus more easily on my food, converse with another solitary diner, watch CNN if I please, gain the attention of the bartender more easily. I don't have to pay visual attention to the movement within the Tavern. This is the kind of place where many of the customers are sinking into wing-backed chairs--a different kind of rhythm found more easily in Salem, than in Los Angeles.

Tavern on the Green is my favorite restaurant in Salem. The decor is comfortable (large chairs), ornate living room style designs, the waiters are always very polite, and every one I've ever taken here loved their food (my favorites are: huge nacho appetizer--always amazing never burned--way better than rockafellas, sandwiches, sweet potato fries, pasta dishes, and the deserts are indescribably delicious).

The Tavern on the Green in the Hawthorne Hotel is a hidden gem in Salem. There's no better place on a snowy winter day to have a hearty meal and good drinks while sitting by the fireplace. The bartenders and servers are very friendly and accommodating and the food is top notch. There's plenty of comfortable chairs too. I've lived in Salem for about 15 years and this place continues to be one of my favs, even with the influx of other places to eat and drink. Great stuff.

A Salem classic. If you enjoy the feeling of sitting in a comfortable Old World spot among friends, the Tavern is the place. Solid and dependable. That goes for the service, staff, menu and atmosphere. This cat won't repeat the descriptions written elsewhere but can tell you the Tavern is a favorite, any time of year.

We went to Tavern on the Green because we purchased a discount card through http://Dealsnorth.com. The discount gives us a buy one get one free entree up to $9.

The restaurant is very warm and inviting. Some of the chairs are like big cushy fireplace chairs. We went on a Thursday night and it was pretty quite. The server came and took our drink order and we place an order for the nacho appetizer - it was HUGE. The biggest plate of nachos I have ever seen. Once the waitress brought the appetizer and took our order we didn't see her for a very long time. There was one other server and the two of them were chatty kathies in the corner.

Our dinner came out, I had the grilled chicken with potato salad and my husband had a burger and fries. Everything was warm and cooked correctly. The potato salad was not good. Very bland. Once again, once the food was delivered we did not see the waitress again for a very long time. For the nachos and two sandwiches and one soda it came to $36 (but then we got $9 off for our http://dealsnorth.com card).

I would give it another try. It is not a place I would go to all the time but when you are looking for something that is not your usual, this would be a good place to consider.

Went in to Tavern on the Green on a Saturday night. Was a bit of a wait but the hostess was very friendly and directed us to a cozy area in the middle of the restaurant where we could sit on the couches and have a drink and/or apps while we waited. We decided to save room for dessert and skipped the apps.

Once we were seated we got our drinks quickly. I ordered the roast chicken, my mom had the baked stuffed shrimp, and my wife had baked haddock. My roasted chicken was delicious, with crackling skin. The breast was a little dry for my taste, but I find restaurants rarely cook chicken the way I like it out of salmonella fear. I got my chicken with the roast potatoes and broccoli, which were also delicious. The broccoli was al dente, which I like, but my wife does not. So bear that in mind if you order veggies. My mom and wife both seemed to really enjoy their dishes otherwise.

For desert I had the pineapple upside down cake, which was really tasty, but hard to eat with a spoon because the pineapple was in a ring. My wife had the gingerbread ice cream sandwich which was absolutely AMAZING. Two thick slices of warm gingerbread with vanilla ice cream between. So tasty. My mom had the cheesecake, which was good as well. We all agreed our coffee was delicious and fresh--which you do not always get when you order decaf.

For a homey atmosphere and delicious food, I recommend Tavern on the Green.

Tavern on the Green has become one of our favorite places in Salem. The food is good, bartender is attentive and friendly and we like that it's laid back and low key in the lounge. It's a great place for a drink and dinner.

This a great place to hang out in Salem! My employees and I frequent the Tavern often, either for lunch/dinner, or just to have a drink after work. It is a little pricey compared to most of the other places around (the only reason for not getting a full 5 stars in my rating), but the environment and fun atmosphere make it worth it. The servers are great and very friendly. Love this place, and I can't wait to go back!

    Bewitched!

Ducked into the Tavern on the Green, located in the Hawthorne Hotel, to grab some drinks & appetizers and watch a little of the Vancouver Olympics. The atmosphere of this place is old school with the fireplace, couches and decor. It feels more like your grandparents living room with a fully stocked bar!

The drinks here are reasonable but it seems there is a pretty big problem with hotel guest ordering Stella Artois in the Challis glass and taking it to their rooms. The glasses seem to just disappear and never make their way back to the bar. I think they need to call Ghostbusters to find Casper and his stash of glassware or at least Scooby Doo and those meddling kids to get to the bottom of it.

For appetizers, went with the Lobster quesadillas and the Tomato/Artichoke dip with bagel chips. The portions appeared a bit small and pricey for what you got. However they tasted good and hit the spot.

    What a hidden gem!

As a city girl I barely venture out of the city limits. Boy was I glad I did. After a day at the wonderful Peabody Essex Museum, we stopped in here for lunch. First impression - old school - the kind of place my grandparents would have taken me to when I was a kid. But there's something nice about this old historic hotel and restaurant.

At first the menu seems disappointing. Sandwiches/Salads - it's fine, but seems a bit pedestrian. We finally decided to get the salad with candied pecans, crab cakes (4 ways), and the lobster quesadillas. They were all divine! Writing this makes me want to go back there for lunch again this weekend. Worth the drive out of the city.

one of my professors at Salem State brought us here for "class" it was great; food was very good, unique selection of beer, very nice atmosphere. We stopped in a few months later after not enjoying the tavern in the square (too yuppie-ish on a sat night) and the atmosphere was very casual, laid back - bartender made something for the gf who is a picky drinker, and she liked it - all around great experience, will continue going back

    OH . . . FUCK . . . YEAH!

A friend of mine brought me here a couple days ago when I went to visit her at work and she was able to leave nice and early. I was fully expecting overly poh, opulent, and expensive and what I got was comfortable, relaxing, and affordable (even though I wasn't paying, I still looked at the right side of the menu).

The Chicken and raspberry salad was unreal, the comfy wing-back chairs were divine, and the slightly dated ambiance was actually rather charming.

Now, I will say that this is not a place to come if you're in a hurry. You will wait a bit, but when the fireplace is going, you're sipping on some tea, and just removing yourself from the hubub of salem in october, the slow pace is perfect.

I can't wait to come back!

Went here on a lazy Sunday. Bad choice.

We sat at the bar- and waited & waited and waited a good 10 minutes for a bartender to appear.

As I waited I began to notice the room. It was way to bright, noone else in the room was under 65 and the decor was horrid.

We asked for menus when the (nice) bartender finally arrived and were not impressed.

Paid 10.50 for 2 beers, which for a dingy bar in Salem is WAY to much , and we moved on.

This place is awesome! I went here for my friend's birthday not to long ago, and the service was really good. The waitress was really nice, and helpful.

Very comfortable atmosphere... and the food is great! The drinks are great, and not too expensive. This is just a wonderful place to enjoy a meal, a chat with friends, a drink, etc.

Don't go here if you are even remotely in a hurry. Whether they are busy or not, it's going to be a while. The last time I was there I was shocked at the elderly nature of the clientele. Then I began to wonder just how long they'd been waiting.

That out of the way, the food and drink here is generally good, and the atmosphere, with fireplace, comfy chairs and view of the Salem Common is very nice. If they picked up the pace a little they'd be 4 star.

I've eaten here many times and have always had a good experience. The food is good and the beautiful oak room is worth the expedience with great architectural detail, views of the common, and a nice fire in the winter. I would definitely recommend this for anyone looking for a casual meal or as a great spot to grab a drink. I've also gone to a wedding at the Hotel ballroom which was beautiful.

One of my all time favorite places to have a drink in winter. I love the real crackling, roaring blaze in the fireplace. You'll be transported to an earlier time in this cozy historic tavern. I think the food could use an update, but it's serviceable enough. Definitely go to the Tavern after dinner wherever you dine on the North Shore. Try to grab a spot close to the fire; you'll do well if it's Sunday--Wednesday, but I have gotten prime seating on other nights as well. They make a very nice classic gin martini. When you go to ...er ...rest in the rest rooms, be sure to check out the Bewitched information (perhaps appropriately) located near the facilities. It's so funny.

The Tavern is great for a low-key night. The room reminds me on an old-fashioned drawing room or parlor, which fits in with the hotel's style. There are huge, plush couches & chairs, plus regular tables and chairs, along with a fireplace. The Tavern gets crowded early, especially on Thursdays. Service is friendly and the food is good. They serve sandwiches with fries for around $7, and I enjoy the food here.
