We are from Minneapolis and recently spent 4 days in the Catskills trying a number of food stops. We were introduced to Ted's by the locals. It was delicious! We found LOTS of flavor in every thing we ate. We ate lunches and breakfast there and truly enjoyed the meals. The staff is efficient, even remembering names from prior visits. They are fast, friendly and very pretty. Well Gus isn't pretty but cooks a mean meal and is very entertaining. We are headed back to Minnesota but promise to return soon!
Review Source:I don't have any ill will towards Ted's and the nice family that owns it. They are pleasant and the restaurant is clean and spacious. We were also treated very, very well with the waitress going as far as making someone in our party of 7 an decaf iced tea. The service part they have down.
I do however take exception to restaurants, in any town, overcharging for sub-par food. Â If you want to be a local establishment in "anytown, usa" there are certain standards that restaurants must follow if they don't want to get crappy reviews. Â I am also insulted that a reviewer would tell me that because I live in NYC I'm supposed to let poorly executed food slide just because I'm in Jeffersonville. Â I Â ate taco's from a truck on the side of the road the other night and paid $2.50 per taco that were better than any I've had. The point is you must CARE about what you are serving, again regardless of what town your place may be in. If you choose to serve food with out that care, adjust your prices accordingly. Â If you put something on your menu, make it well or don't put it on there. Â The phrase of " Oh it's Ted's in Jeffersonville, you can't expect to get good (insert food) there" is a cop-out. A restaurants location should have no bearing on the quality of the food.
Having said all that I really don't think Ted's is all that bad. They do need to fix some issues. Â First and foremost they are a diner and that part of the menu is done well. A few people got breakfast stuff and it was made well. Â They also bill themselves as a Turkish restaurant and there is a big sign in the window that says "Mediterranean food" Â yet it was lacking many of the staples. Â Some people at the table got the Mixed Appetizer from the Turkish menu and they liked it. They also shared a shrimp casserole dish that they complained had too little shrimp but otherwise was tasty . Â My Gf got a Greek salad with grilled shrimp and the shrimp were grilled well. Sadly, the salad was drowning in Italian dressing. It was almost soup-like. Â I got the stuffed flounder with rice and steamed veggies. The rice was perfect, as were the veggies and that's were I should have stopped. While the flounder was fresh and cooked well, They stuffed it with a "homemade" imitation crab meat and breadcrumb slop fest that I left on the plate. It was mushy and really poorly made and all it would have took was a buck or two more to get real crab meat. Supermarkets use Imitation crab meat, not restaurants. Â We also shared an order of Borek and although it seemed deep-fried instead of pan fried like it said on the menu it was really good. Â They did make some really good Turkish coffee that I got after dinner and I enjoyed it very much.
Like I said originally, Ted's is an OK place. It just needs some work. Â I don't think any of my complaints had anything to do with where I grew up, nor did I think they were outrageous demands. It had more to do with poor execution. If they are going to charge the prices they charge for some of their entrees, they had better step up their game or as one misguided reviewer put it, us " cidiots" won't be back to bring our money to towns like Jeffersonville and to places run by good people, like Ted's
Great breakfast spot - never ate anything but breakfast here. Not sure I would. I love that some of the tables are old sewing machine tables (they actually say Singer on them) - pretty cool. They totally need to spell check their signage and menu though. Still trying to figure out what a Charcal burger is. LOL.
Review Source:Great breakfast spot. Definitely a local institution. They get you in and out quickly if you so desire, or usually have no problem letting you linger and people watch. I've only had dinner here once or twice with good but not spectacular results. The burger I had was really good, but I had a steak that was not good at all. Stick to breakfast and you cant go wrong with anything. Even the cream chipped beef that everybody makes fun of me for eating is awesome!
Review Source:Had the Spinach pie thing. Â Inedible. Â couldn't cut through it with the knife provided, the bottom was over cooked, the spinach tasted like it hadn't been washed thoroughly, then cooked, frozen, thawed and reheated...and there was little to no feta on it at all. Â
So I sent it back. Â They wanted me to pay for it anyway! Â The owner and his wife actually shouted at me! Â Told me I was trying to rip them off! Â I left hungry and feeling bullied. Â I apologized to the waitress, who seemed to understand...maybe this happens a lot?...not her decision to charge me for it. Â
I've worked in the restaurant industry in NYC for 5 years and have never been treated so badly. Â I know this isn't NYC...but whoa! Â Isn't there a basic level of customer service? Â guess not.
Never going back here again.
Ted's is one of those places that every small town has, a nice place to eat and see everyone in town, but it doesn't stop there. Take a walk on the wild side and finally decide to try the Turkish, (Greek/Middle Eastern) menu and you will be more than pleasantly surprised. The appetizer plate for 2 is almost a meal in and of itself. It offers things you may be familiar with, and things you're not, but EVERYTHING on the plate is delicious. The Greek Spinach Pie with a Greek Salad and a drink is a deal at under $10.00. The Grilled Sultan's Platter may seem expensive, but you are getting steak and lamb chops and they taste out of this world!!! There are things like the borak that you've never heard of, but once ordered, you can't stop eating. Even the fried carrots with yogurt sauce is out of this world. Yes Ted's is the place to see and be seen for breakfast and the burgers and sandwiches are out of this world for lunch but judging by the fact that in the summer you can't even get a table for dinner, they have to be doing SOMETHING right!
Review Source:My family has been to Ted's several times over the last few years, and I would agree that breakfast is the time to go. Â Although there are a few other "diners" in Sullivan County - Ted's is a bit more of a "diner-plus". Â I have had their turkish platters for lunch on occasion, but now we really only think of Ted's when we want a leisurely weekend breakfast.
Ted's is consistent food at a slow pace. Â Just the reason why my family goes to Sullivan County in the first place.
Ted's doesn't pretend to be anything other than it is.....a good solid diner that is also a kind of de-facto community center. Â you pretty much run into everyone you know there at some point. Â the food isn't extrardinary, but it is good and comes quickly and as others have said the servers are very nice. Â and the turkish selections take it up a notch in terms of presenting a welcome surprise for somone not wanting just your typical burger or plate of fried eggs. Â the turkish breakfast selections are delicious, the gyros are justs fine, and while we haven't ever gone for dinner (for our family, ted's it is mostly about a weekend breakfast outing) the selections look intriguing.
Review Source:I agree with the previous reviewer. Ted's isn't bad, really nice service, and I'd rate the Turkish part of the menu as more than OK.
Now, on the downside, my wife and I both got pretty bad indigestion after eating here the other day. I hate to blame these guys, but I dunno.... anyway, I have not given up on this place and will try again. If my digestion is better I will amend this review.
P.S. I'm belatedly downgrading my review to one-star, in light of the fact I got sick here. That makes it an automatic one-star.
Ted's is an institution in these parts. Â I have driven 45 minutes from PA to have breakfast here, because they make good breakfast. Â
One entire portion of the menu is dedicated to Turkish food. Â I gotta be honest, NY-caliber, it ain't. Â It doesn't seem to stop the entire retired population of the Upper West Side, all of whom seem to have weekend homes here in lovely Jeffersonville, if the NY Timeses, channel 13 totebags and the sauce-stained copies of Mother Jones left behind on the table are any indication.
Jeff has a few dining options but Ted's is likely to keep everyone in your group happy, and is cheap, and isn't bad at all.
