We went to Terry O'Reilly's for Booyah Trivia on Tuesday with our friends. They have been a few times and love it, so they recommended it.
We apparently went through the "wrong" door when we entered, but the waitress who greeted us told us to just walk on through to the other side (yes, I realize I just quoted The Doors).
We saw our friends immediately sitting at a high top table, which did end up being a BIT tight for 4 meals + trivia sheets, but it worked.
Our waitress came over immediately to ask if we wanted drinks and came back often (but not in a pestering way) until we were ready to order. She was never far from sight and offered us refills before we could ask. After she took our order, our friend leaned in and quietly said "I am so excited! There used to be an AWFUL waitress here, who we always got, and I think this one replaced her!" I mentioned how the majority of the reviews on here panned the service and they said "it was probably that waitress!"
My friend & I both went for the Moroccan Spiced Chicken (Chicken Breast marinated in Moroccan spices, grilled to perfection with a curried cous cous and served with fresh vegetables). My friend said her friend raved about this dish and got it every time and I had been intrigued by it (plus, since it used to be a Mediterranean place, I figured it would be good).
The fresh veg was steamed broccoli, but it was crispy (not soggy/wilted, as steamed brocc tends to get) and the couscous was pitim (aka Israeli couscous), which means it's bigger than normal couscous. It was a bit bland, but it ended up perfectly complimenting the spicy, super flavorful chicken. Each dish had 2 generously sized chicken breasts, so I ended up taking 1 home!
Our husbands both went for burgers - hers for the Blue Cheese, Bacon & Caramelized Onion and mine for the regular. I didn't try a bite (although they looked decent), but the fries were great!! Nicely seasoned and a decent size. Not a huge order of them, but that's ok.
Our meal was expensive ($40+ tip for just my husband & me), but the guys did share some buffalo wings and our friends had a few drinks, so that adds up.
Trivia-wise, it was great. It was much faster than my beloved Stump! trivia and the trivia DJ was funny and easy to hear. I will definitely be back. And hopefully next time we'll do much better!
Terrible. Food was cold and it took them 30 min to get 2 burgers with salads to the table. Â
The waitress tall blonder skinny was non existent to the point the bartender took over and basically served us. Â He got us our water, took our order, served our food to our table, and even rang us up. Â I tipped the waitress ZERO which was well deserved-I've never tipped zero ever!!! But, honestly she deserved it and she didn't SERVICE us. Â I tipped the bartender instead. Â If you go there don't get served by the waitress-go to the bar. Â He does a good job.
I'm happy to see a moderately priced dining option in this location, but this has a lot of room for improvement.
The good
--Very moderate/fair prices
--Hostess and waiter very kind and polite (5 stars here)
--Nice, casual atmosphere
--No outdoor seating, but windows open up during good weather (and it looks like in winter there is a fireplace of sorts)
--Menu includes many items you would expect from an Irish pub
--Vegetables were tasty and well cooked
--Very willing to make substitutions and accommodate special requests (we preferred fries to baked potato and didn't want peppers with the mixed veggies - no problem)
The not-so-good
--Iced tea is not fresh brewed but rather comes from a machine (luckily I asked before ordering)
--Mashed potatoes are not fresh
--The baked scrod was tasty, but the portion was very small
--We didn't order the fish & chips, but the table next to ours did and the fish looked really overcooked. Â Our pork chops (daily special) were tasty but also tough and bit dry
--SLOW SLOW service. Â It took forever for our food to come out.
I suppose we would consider eating there again if the parking gods shined upon us and we were in the mood for pub food again (we had planned to go to Noodle House but there was a spot directly in front of the pub, so we gave it a try). Â I
Having that Irish pub feel with a lot of taps wins my heart. Â However the food, not so much. Â I know they are trying but nothing that provided the wow factor.
The restaurant is split into two areas and it can give you that cramped feel as the ceiling heights are wicked low. Â We were there on a weeknight and were able to easily get a table right after work. Â It was definitely noticeable this is a happening place for after work folks. Â
Our server was standard and timely. Â They had the appropriate glasses for a nice Sam Adams summer for the season! Â We both had the burger, but mine came with regular fries and my companion had the sweet potato fries. Â If I can remember one thing from the meal it was those sweet potato fries. Â Crispy ends, thick cuts and cooked to perfection. Â Burger not so much. Â
I would come back here but more for drinks.
it's really nice to have a more affordable option in newton center, and the pub is a great place to go for a few drinks and to catch a sports game. however, the food is okay and generally unmemorable.
we went to dinner with a few friends, and started with the bbq chicken wings. the chicken was juicy, but the sauce was not as flavorful as i thought it would be. for entrees, three people ordered the burger and i got the turkey club. while everything was okay, nothing stood out.
some of the beer offerings were pretty good, but i really disliked that the beer and cocktail list did not have any prices.
the staff are friendly, and our waitress was kind. i would certainly go back to catch a game, but i wouldn't seek the pub out for food.
My family went in for lunch recently. Â The atmosphere was nice and the staff was personable, but the menu was quite limited and the food was not good at all. Â The bacon with my son's eggs was barely cooked. Â The "fresh" turkey was clearly cheap deli meat. Â My husband's sandwich seemed like something pre-made from the grocery store, a few days old (I'm sure it was made fresh, but just didn't taste that way). Â With so many other good choices around, don't bother with this place.
Review Source:We were there last night. The hostess at the front was personable and friendly. The pub was bustling and there was a great vibe. We were there for the first time with the family. We had to wait only for ~10 mins as the restaurant was full but once table of 4 was available we were seated promptly. The hostess and waiter were very attentive and the place was busy. The menu is the perfect size for a pub. There was a kids menu. In our party we ordered a burger (which was delicious), banger 'n mash (very good) and steak tips (excellent) and a kids chicken fingers. The food was great pub food and our drinks and beers arrived promptly. The pub is cheerful, warm and a great place to eat with family and friends,
Warren O' Reilly, the manager, came by to chat with us and the kids and to check on how the food was and to talk a little about the restaurant and beers. We will certainly be back and look forward to coming back with friends to watch soccer or rugby while drinking and eating
Visited this pub twice within the month and am a fan now. First with my wife as a little date night and we had been to the previous restaurant once (same owner) and only once so this is a great new change from what it used to be. I had the Veg Pizza which was thick and full of good garden choices, my wife had the Portabello Burger, it was good and fries were good. Drink choices were plentifull for me and wouldn't complain. We sat up front in the bar area and the radiators were warm and cozy but got too hot over time.
Second time was with friends, my friends are a bit more beer-centric and were not overly satisfied with some basics the bar should have (shrug I didnt understand what they wanted) and the appitizers were fulfilling for 4 people.
Both times, our waitresses have been attentive and friendly. Food is as expected for bar food and basically just a good environment to hangout in.
I stopped by terry o'reilly's a couple of times this year. Â I stopped by in January with colleagues and had a couple of tasty bites and two pints of Guinness. Â The service was crisp, the waitress attentive but not overbearing. I came back and I had the hummus and the spinach and steak tip salad. Â I had the same waitress, a friendly readheaded lass, and bartenders were friendly and accomdating, and the service was again exemplary. Â I'd recommend this place to a friend.
Review Source:I work in newton center and came here after work one night to wind down and will most certainly be back. My friend and I got a few beers and had some delicious shepherds pie. Traditional! We were served by Kristin who was very accommodating, but not overwhelming. I always feel like servers are grubbing for a tip by being all over us and accosting us during our meal, or they completely forget about you. I felt compelled to write a review when she found the happy medium. Good food, good drinks and good atmosphere.
Review Source:I stopped by Terry O'Reilly's on a cold night for a warm and cozy dinner. It was quite busy and we were told to grab a table on the lower level. Uh, not one single table so we just stood there for a few minutes a little confused until we found a spot at the bar. Our bartender was perfectly nice and I was pleased as punch to have her serving us.
We ordered some stuffed potato skins which I kind of thought tasted like they were the frozen kind. Not horrible, but something I could easily heat up at home.
My cobb sald was huge and packed with all kinds of goodies. There was HUGE amount of lettuce so at times that was actually a little overwhelming. I obviously want lettuce, but not so much I get intimidated.
My date had the burger which was fine. Nothing to write home about, but also nothing to complain about.
I don't think I would specifically seek out a trip here, but if I was in the area or coming home on the train I would definitely pop in for a drink at the bar.
I took my mom and fiancée here on Sunday December 2nd. I had the chicken fingers (which were delish) and my mom and fiancée both had the beef stew. According to my mom and fiancée, the beef stew was not remotely edible. I kid you not, they left full servings. The waitress asked how everything was, and my mom told her that the beef stew was terrible. Now, the waitress was very young, and probably did not receive such blunt feedback, but she did nothing, and said nothing. A few minutes later, a man (white hair, glasses, probably in his 60s) was going table to table asking how everyone's meal was...I kid you not when I say he went out of his way to avoid us. This was very disappointing as the bar is great, and I had been there a few times and enjoyed myself...however, I think I will be crossing Terry O'Reilly's off of my list. Unfortunate to kill off a Cavan man's place, as I am the son of a Cavan man myself...
Review Source:What an improvement at this prime location in Newton Center! Â Long overdue -- a decent Irish pub with bar and comfort food. Â Open only a few months, the place is PACKED! Â The owner/host went out of his way to accommodate our party of 7 on a Friday evening. Â We had drinks, some had food, atmosphere was great. Â Wish this place luck and they are off to a great start!!
Review Source:I was going to give Terry O'Reilly's a break for their slow, slow service because they're new, but then I realized.. they've been around for awhile now. Plus, it's the same management. The owner of the now original restaurant, Sabra revamped this place into an Irish pub. He's not new to running a business.
There was a private party going on on the other side of the restaurant when we came in, so we sat in the front of the restaurant. No big deal. However, every step of the process was so painfully slow. Nice waiter, but the guy had no time management whatsoever, and the obviously present management (including the owner) were providing no guidance at all. My sister wanted a glass of water for her drink. After 15 minutes, I just went up to the bar myself and got it for her. It took at least 15 minutes to get our orders placed, and then the food took forever as well. Finally, we waited at least 10 minutes to pay so we could leave. A quick lunch on a Sunday should not take over an hour unless you want it to.
The food was OK. My mother ordered a bleu cheese burger, but it had barely any bleu cheese on it; just a thin layer underneath the onions. I ordered fish and chips, but I wasn't impressed. Nothing special about the flavor and the coleslaw didn't taste very fresh. The highlight of the whole experience would have to be my sister's order: the BBQ bone-in wings. The flavor was spicy and absolutely amazing.
Not sure if I'll be back. The magic was kinda lost when I found out this is not an authentic Irish pub. The owner is just trying to bank out on a new idea. And the service was horrible. Might come back for the wings... maybe. But, I'd probably sit at the bar so I can stalk my server.
I brought my wife here the other night, October 11th. I ordered a burger, medium rare. What I got back was a hockey puck, it was almost burnt, well done. The bun was burnt, I'm talking the top of the bun was black. Who ever was cooking that day obviously doesn't care about cooking, and the waitress might want to look at the food she is serving. If I was a waiter and the cook gave me a burger with a burnt bun, I think I would ask for a new one.
My wife got a steak sandwich that was served on some cheap sub roll from the grocery store, a big dry glob of bread.
Go to Tommy Doyle's in Newton! Â This place sucks!
What a breath of fresh air to visit an Irish bar with great food and drink.
Warren behind the bar was hilarous and certainly got us in the mood for a few afternoon drinks and great food.
Overall food drink and cleanliness was top notch but plenty of places have this ,whats unique is the atmosphere and a
This is a proper Irish pub run by an Irish family who know what a pub experience should be.
Ill be back when I visit MA again.
This place is totally great! Â I met up with a bunch of friends here for dinner and some drinks and had a pint of Terry's Irish Red which is a surprisingly sweet red ale that they have on tap.
I also had the Shepherd's Pie which was delicious! Large chunks of Lamb covered with delicious mashed potatoes. People in our groups all liked their food and had the steak sandwich, the mushroom burger, and bbq wings. Though I personally only tried the Shepherd's Pie and a bite of the Steak Sandwich.
We also got an order of mussels to the table and the sauce was incredible. Such a great job on that dish.
They had live music going on in another section of the bar which they had up on the TV in our area so we could watch if we wanted.
Overall a great place to meet up with some friends and grab a pint and some food.
Awesome new bar! This place is beautiful, clean, full of friendly people and supplies tasty fare and beer to boot! Not to mention the live music most nights. Order the mussels, hummus, or traditional Irish food...you really can't go wrong. The manager is also a real gem; handsome and charming (he looks like the red-headed doctor that was on ER!) and he will bend over backward to make the customers happy. I would highly recommend this fine establishment. Long live Terry O'Reilly's!
Review Source:Wow, this place is great! I miss the old Sabra but what an amazing transformation. Great beers on tap, the food is exceptional and the atmosphere is modern and fun. I've been here a couple times and can't wait to come back. The staff is courteous and very attentive. So far everything on the menu has been great. Definitely worth a visit.
Review Source:Within moments of sitting down at our table, I turned to my husband and said, "I'm so glad this place isn't closer to home, because we'd spend way too much time here."
Let's call TO'R what it is... a pub (as it says in the name) and it's a fine one. Â The wait staff was friendly and spent time joking with us and there was never a moment when our glasses were empty. Â And, really, I never thought I'd find a place that not only served $8 mussels, but that actually did them well. Â
Again... this is a bar with a solid menu (much better than the majority of the establishments I'm used to in South Boston) and a friendly staff. Â I give them credit for opening so successfully and I look forward to coming back when I'm in Newton.
