Disappointingly Mediocre.
We've been to Tiny's a handful of times over the last decade. Â Today, we were seated at the bar (with our two kids)--okay, it was busy. Â We waited a good 35, 40 minutes for our food which was average when if finally came. Â I got the eggs benedict. Â I was shocked that for $7.95 they couldn't even have thrown a few potatoes on the plate. Â The hollandaise sauce was clearly from some large, industrial sized vat as well. Â The top piece of my husband's toast was fine. Â The piece below it was burnt--did they think we wouldn't notice if it was under the other piece?
Now, being seated at the bar, we had a great view of the kitchen--the open doorway was right in front of us.  Our waitress must have walked right past us 10 times.  Not once did she ask how our food was.  When she finally stopped back with the bill I said to her pointing to the toast, "That should not have been on the plate." She laughed  and did offer a new piece then but it was a little too late, don't you think?
Additionally, we are normally sized people who do not over-eat. Â We were hungry when we left. Â Stopped at Dunkin Donuts.
Unfortunately we will not be returning.
I feel bad giving this one star. To be clear: the food was exactly what we were looking for (solid diner fare for a hearty breakfast) and the waitresses were friendly and attentive.
My problem is with the manager's insane attempt to gouge customers for water.
The story: my friends and I were biking across New England, and were having breakfast at Tiny's. Â As we do at every breakfast or lunch stop, we asked the waitress if we could get a pitcher of ice water to refill our bottles. Most of the time this is no problem. The waitress said that while she'd be happy to do it, she's not allowed because the manager has started selling bottled water.
Fine. We figured we could just fill our bottles in the bathroom from the sink. The manager went so far as to stop me while I carried my bottle to the bathroom and tell me I couldn't fill it up there, and then try to sell me 16 oz. bottles of Poland Spring for $1.75 apiece!
To repeat: I was not even allowed to fill a bottle in the bathroom sink, after eating a full meal.
This was pure gouging, plain and simple, attempting to squeeze every last dime out of me, and I found it pretty offensive.
I get a place that doesn't give free water to noncustomers (though many places, out of kindness do). I get it a place that doesn't bring out a free pitcher of ice water even to customers (though, again, most places do). But to tell us we can't use the bathroom sink to get water because you want to sell overpriced Poland Spring?
That's beyond acceptable. Treat me like a customer, instead of someone you can milk for every penny. Until then, despite our very kind waitress (whom we tipped in full), I have to recommend against this place.
Met our friend there and it may have been the worst breakfast I have ever had. Overcooked black eggs with no seasoning at all, undercooked fries, hash brown patties that would be served at burger king. My daughter got a hamburger and it was cooked to death. My wife got seafood and it had a terrible smell. Our friend got an omelet and it was a brownish yellow color. Even the ice tea we had was old and smelled.
Terrible terrible place.
Friendly waitstaff and great service! Coffee refills showed up before I realized my cup was almost empty. No problem finding a seat on an early Saturday morning. My omelet was cooked well but it was just wasn't unique or creative. Only got toast, no home fries. Convenient location for meeting fellow bikers for a ride to the west.
Review Source:We like Tiny's alot. Its our fall back place for dinner when we cant think of where we want to go. We almost always get some sort of fried seafood. The seafood and fish chowders are very good too. Prices are reasonable, portions very large. The staff are all very nice.
The one time i strayed from seafood, i got the meatloaf which i dont recommend at all!
tiny's has been a staple of life since I first found it in 1990 when I was stationed at Fort Devens. Â Came here for breakfast when the weather was bad, "working" lunches and supper. Â Never had a bad meal, but the Tiny Burger, all 1/2 pound of it, is amazing.
Since then I have brought my friends, co-workers and family here for a good meal. Â The basket of cheese and crackers while making the meal choices hits the spot. Â The specials are always good and make the varied menu even broader.
For dessert, strawberry shortcake is hard to beat. Â But there are also pies and cakes. Â Good coffee or an adult beverage help round out the meal.
Tiny's is what all family restaurants want to be. The best staff, warm welcoming atmosphere, good comfort food.
This is the place when people move out of the area they want for their first meal when they get home for a visit.
If life finds you in Ayer do yourself a favor and go to Tiny's for breakfast (or lunch or dinner)
Tiny's is your typical little-town, diner-style place. Friendly staff, reasonably priced food, variety on the menu, good specials, and always people in and about.
The all you can eat fish fry special is worth it, as is the roast beef. The Tiny burger is an Ayer establishment. I've had wonderful turkey tips, and have overdried turkey tips. The seafood menu is so-so.
The breakfast menu is worth it though with good-sized portions. It does get busy on weekend mornings.
Don't come in expecting the Omni Parker, and don't expect a dive bar either.. Tiny's is what it is, and you most likely will not be disappointed!
Checked this place out for breakfast the other day and was downright pleased.
I had the bacon, egg, and cheese on an english muffin, a hashbrown, and a grilled blueberry muffin.
The breakfast sammich was great. Â Delicious bacon, melty cheese, a huge egg, and I believe they grilled the english muffin, which gave it a great, crispy crunch.
The hashbrown was just like one you'd find at McDonald's-- and many of you may not like this, but frankly I think they're delicious. Â And the waitress told me beforehand, so I knew what to expect. Â I LIKE EM, ALL RIGHT!?
The blueberry muffin was the weakest part of the meal. Â Pretty dry. Â I ate through it, however, and finished the meal because I'm a friggin' competitor.
Great atmosphere here, too. Â Tons of locals pumping their dough into the scratch ticket vending machine. Â Guys sitting at the bar talking about last night at the bar (yeah that's right). Â
Anywhoo, check out Tiny's for a great 'greasy spoon'-style meal. Â I hope to try it out for lunch or dinner in the future!
Typical Diner food, plus their claim to fame is the seafood specials. Â I didn't get that, but might try it in the future.
Big portions of cheap, filling food. Â Full bar. Â The place is much larger than you'd imagine from looking at it from the outside.
The service was great, the french fries were terrific. Â My BLT was big and bursting with bacon. Â I got a refill on my drink in a flash.
Is it gourmet food? Â No. Â Is it a good value? Â Yes.
I for one LOVE Tiny's. I spent nine months in the Ft. Devens area for work and this was a go to spot at least twice a
week. Breakfast, lunch, or dinner, Tiny's never disappointed. As others have pointed it is the definition of mom & pop greasy spoon, but for a Texas boy seeking good, home style cooking served by down home people it not only hit the spot, but warmed my heart too. Love ya Tiny's!!!
So I was definitely too generous with my previous review. Â We've been back a few more times and really the food is below average, which is really too bad. Â It's a convenient little location and it would've been nice to have a spot to stop in on the way home from work, but we just can't justify going back anymore.
I tried the clam chowder on one visit, and it literally came from a can, no question about it. Â My husband tried the all-you-can-eat roast beef dinner - the meat was plain and the mashed potatoes were definitely of the instant variety. Â When he asked for a second helping, the waitress brought out a plate with 1 thin piece of roast beef and a little gravy, nothing else. Â We wrongfully assumed that a second helping would include the sides. Â Taste-wise, it just seems like a lot of the food comes from a can or a box.
The waitstaff are a friendly bunch, but unfortunately it's not enough for us to return.
Tiny's is one of my favorite breakfast places in the Ayer, Groton, Littleton area. The food is always consistent and served timely hot off the grille by a friendly competent waitress.
They have 2 seating and dining areas on weekends, so no matter what time you get there for breakfast, you can usually get a table. They also have full counter service. They actually know how to cook eggs "over medium", and  I love their ham steaks! (now I'm getting hungry...)
The prices are right and the portions are large. They keep the tables clean after guests leave and the waitress staff is always on top of their game.
I haven't tried dinner or lunch there, but I have been going there for breakfast off and on for about 10 years.
So, 4 stars for Tiny's ****
Wednesday nights, ALL YOU CAN EAT FRIED HADDOCK for $9.99!!!!
It's so good. The waitstaff is friendly and the food is pretty good. It can be hit or miss with the Steamed Clams. One night I went and they were fantastic, another night they seemed like they were covered in mud....
Its not a fancy place by any means but if you're on a tight budget and want basic food it's the place to go. I've tried most of their fried seafood and their burgers are awesome!
Very laid back
