We came here last fall at the recommendation of a girl at our hotel.  I am really glad we did.  We loved the food and the ambiance.  We live in the Twin Cities and this meal in the same type of eatery would have been probably double the price.

I give this place a 5 because it is unique and we will for sure go back again.  Our server (cannot remember his name) was very arrogant though.  We made fun of him the entire time he was waiting on us.  A gal came over to clear our plates and she was awesome, so I think this is not the norm at Tycoons and downstairs as well.

If you are here, you also need to check out the downstairs.  It is awesome.  Eat upstairs and then have a drink or dessert downstairs.

Dinner time!  but first, let's sample some Fitger's brews!

We sampled 3 beers at the Alehouse.  By far the tastiest was the Apricot Wheat.  The apricot flavor stood out as a clean after taste to finish each sip.  It was smooth and way too drinkable.

The Apricot Wheat also went well with the Fish and chips I ordered.  The fish was a couple of nice sized chunks of fillet that were nicely breaded and crispy.  My mouth is watering just thinking of that meal, it was cooked to perfection.  The chips were potato wedges.  These were also nice and crispy on the outside and tender on the inside.  I have a new appreciation for fish and chips after that meal.

One of the highlights of our visit was going into the elevator and pressing the -1 floor button.  The doors opened up into the old jail/speak-easy.  It has a historic feel to it and made for a great environment and discussion through the night.

Went here with a friend of mine before an art gallery opening. We both had never been before. The inside is beautiful, but I was expecting more from the food. It almost seemed like the food didn't go with the atmosphere. It wasn't bad. I felt like everything on the menu I'd have to ask "without...." I'll probably go again if I'm with someone that wants to go. This time I had a chicken melt (can't remember what they called it) without ham. It was good, a little spicy. The side salad was good, had the wine vinaigrette.

Loved it. I was expecting a mediocre bar experience and walked away very happy. I had a great steak, great veggies, wonderful service and some of the best local beer I've ever had. I really liked the atmosphere, service was super friendly and fast and this place was fun. I would definately recommend this place.

We discovered this place our first time passing through Duluth on our way to the North Shore and we've come back every time since. It's an extension of the Fitgers Brewery so the beers are dynamite. Good food to match! Burgers are awesome and the steamed mussels are the best we've ever had. If you've got time, check out the downstairs bar which was converted from old jail cells from over 100 years ago.

Once we heard this place is associated with Fitger's we made a point to check it out and were thoroughly satisfied.

The easiest way to describe Tycoons is to call it a classier, adult version of Fitger's.  The food is more dinner entree focused (steaks, seafood, and the like) and the atmosphere is less kinetic.  They have all the same, quality beers from the Fitger's brewery available.  The setting is better for a date night than a place to bring your kids.  Although, they are accommodating.

I had the fish and chips here and they were incredible.  Completely blew Grandma's out of the water (puns!)  The portions are on the generous side so either come hungry or plan on taking home leftovers.

Our server was friendly and attentive.  Our meal was plated excellently and we did not feel rushed at all.  I hate it when your entree comes out before you are done with your appetizer.  Not a problem here!  The prices are completely justifiable given the quality of the food, the serving size, and the well trained staff.

The only negative thing about our experience was they were out of two entrees (the pot roast and the braised ribs.)  A little sad to hear that after salivating over the menu description.  But I was happy with the fish and chips as a substitute.  I guess now we have an excuse to go back the next time we're in town.  Two thumbs up!

Our Duluth resident friends took us to Tycoons Alehouse and Eatery because they couldn't stop singing their praises. As a former Duluth resident while in college, I would have loved for this place to have existed when I lived there. It would have been a lot better than the peanut bar we frequented in Superior, but enough about suppressed memories. Back to Tycoons ... We didn't spend too much time on the main level, which was classy. The bartenders were nice; I ordered some drinks before our decent to the elegant and historical basement, which I was told used to be a former jail. The mood lighting set with concrete walls, friendly/helpful wait staff for that level, and the seating set an ambiance that was really cozy and charming. Although I didn't sample any of the food, their drinks were great and it was a great place to catch up with old friends. I look forward to returning!

Really great atmosphere.  Think 1930's meets modern - but approachable.

The menu has a nice array of sandwiches - and some really great specials.  I got the veggie chili - and it was really quite hearty and delicious.

    I was pleasantly surprised.

Nice establishment with a great bar set up. Went there for lunch with the cousins. I didn't feel like being adventurous and just had a burger. That thing was very good and the rest of the fam said their food was great.

Not my jam... but, if you like that old-timey feel... check this place out! If you are at the casino across the street, take a breath and spend some of your break time here before you lose all your money.

Beautiful decor, very dark atmosphere, another good restaurant and bar from the Fitger's family.

If it wasn't for the service, or lack thereof, I would have given a higher rating. My waiter took a very long time between visits, and although he was knowledgeable and friendly, he simply too long to check back.

Fast forward through the very comforting cup of french onion soup topped with terrific cheesy french bread slices, and through the very flavorful but quite chewy pork medallions served on an overly enormous plate, and I finally arrived at the highlight of my meal; the blueberry bread pudding dessert.

The bread pudding was served piping hot with a warm and soothing generous drizzle of caramel sauce. Large enough to share but just perfect to hog all for yourself, the bread pudding didn't overwhelm with blueberry flavor, its warmth was enveloping, and the gooeyness kept me digging for more.

Surprisingly inexpensive happy hour pints of Brewhouse beer and a decent variety of sandwiches and entrees. A little artsy in both the environment and food plating, but this a good late-night joint for some drinks. Price range is a little high so don't expect a quick and cheap snack.

Learn how to make a fricken drink.

Im a bourbon, scotch and whisky girl, through and through. I saw the bar in the basement and swooned at their selection, an appropriate combination with the their swanky speakeasy atmosphere.
So, i ordered my favorite drink, an old fashioned. Last time i checked, there is alcohol in an old fashioned. I could not taste a drop of bourbon in my drink, and there was too much bitters and sugar.

Learn how to tend a bar people!  And just cuz I'm a little lady, doesn't mean i want a little, weak drink.  Give your patrons what they pay for!

We had such a great lunch here. The manager or owner I'm not quite sure was so nice and took us on a impromptu tour of the new basement lounge and even the third floor even though neither was open at the time. Food was great. Their blue cheese dressing is AMAZING! Loved it will definitely be back.

I like this place because they have Brewhouse beer - I would give anything to have a constant supply of apricot wheat. ohhh yummy

I thought the food was good - and a fun location. This defiantly isn't a place to check out though if your looking for fast and cheap. I think for a beer and one of the specials my bill was around $23.

Great building with unique atmosphere. Went there on a date night and very much enjoyed our selves. Loved the Mac 'n Cheese and Wild Rice Burger. Was bummed that their beer menu didn't match what they had on hand because I got all excited to see a Fitger's favorite but it was not available. Also, they still don't have the homemade root beer available.

I've been here a few times now, with my rather frequent trips to Duluth lately... and I'm rounding my 3.5* up to a 4.

4 because it's conveniently located downtown where I can stroll back to my hotel
4 because in the summer I can dine outside
4 because I really, really like the Wild Rice burgers (specifically brewhouse style) - - okay, THAT would be a 5!
and 5 because I can drink the brewhouse's Apricot Wheat Ale here... yum!!

All in all, i'd have to say the service is rather hit or miss and the food is good.

I haven't made it down to the Rathskaller yet, but I hear it's pretty cool.
Haven't heard any live music yet, but that would be fun.

I like the history with this place. Duluth has so much history, it's great to see these gorgeous buildings serve new purposes.

Brewhouse beer without having to elbow through a crowd of hipsters and tourists.  Hurray!
the food is not too shabby, typical brewhouse fare: burgers, sammiches,  pasta, a brat or two, and a few oddballs for the adventurous.
The bars are where it's at though.  The upstairs is made out of old bowling lanes with a ridonkulously beautiful tapper pouring Fitger's beers.  My heart beats for Apricot Wheat (shut up, it's not girly).  They also have a few specialty drinks such as the Zenith which contains several ingredients like Jameson and what I can only believe is magic fairy dust.
Downstairs is the Rathskellar.  Crazy dark, awesome old dungeon feel and a selection of beers from around the world, or at least Germany.  (Also the only place to get Surly Schadenfreude outside of the Twin Cities as far as I know.)  Mostly full bar where I received the tastiest Long Island I've ever had.  Only complaints: you can't get some of the drinks from upstairs in the Rathskellar and it only holds about 60, so it fills up fast.

The fact that they serve Fitger's Brewing here is fantastic. It is owned by the same people and just down the street. I went here for a Charlie Parr show and it as a fantastic time.  The stage is bigger and more room for dancing compared to Fitger's but far less space for sitting down and enjoying the show. Also, they have a bar in the basement where the old Duluth Jail used to be.

Duluth has a gem with Tycoons.

This place has friendly servers and professional management running the show. They were very knowledgeable about the food, beverages and neighborhood. The staff shared stories with us and provided solid recommendations for other places to visit in town. For this alone, I would return.

The mussels on the appetizer menu were delicious. The two dozen mussels that was served to me could stand as a dinner course if served with a salad or soup, but hey, these were awesome for a meal.

If you are looking for a place to visit, head on over. This is a place you don't want to miss.

Rathskeller Review....So sad they do not care about improving customer service!!  This is the second time we have been to Rathskeller.  The first visit, the waitress at least said we have "some kinks" we are trying to fix.  Last night, rude, rude rude was the service of the evening!  Because they are trying to be a "beer and scotch" establishment...if you desire a nice glass of wine you have to fend for yourself!

What that means is you get back on the elevator, walk up to the bar and wait....wait and wait some more.  Order a glass of wine, then CAREFULLY carry it back on the elevator and go back to the "old jail" and enjoy!  Yes, the atmosphere is fabulous and they have done an amazing job of renovating.... Yet they do not care for  the customers that will allow this establishment to flourish the way we want our restaurants to in Duluth!

We met another couple here for dinner and drinks, after that, we headed to the basement for some drinks.

Our waitress was flat out awesome, she knew the menu and made some recommendations.  She was so good, both couples commented on it.  What a pleasant surprise.  We got the stuffed chicken, veggie burger and a bacon cheeseburger, with a side of onion rings.  Each person was happy with their respective meals.  The beer was very good as well.

After being satisfied with the meals, we headed downstairs for more drinks.  I loved the atmosphere, it's very unique.  I ordered Jameson Vintage Reserve Whisky and a Bulliet Rye Whisky.  I enjoyed both but I liked the rye the best.

The decor upstairs is very nice and cozy, very European pub like.  It's clean, well kept, and not too noisy.  Service was exceptional for us and the food came quickly.

This will probably be my new fav restaurant in Duluth.  I'll have to go again to make sure.

This is a review primarily for Rathskeller in the basement of Tycoon's.

What a disappointment!!!  The let-downs started upon walking through the door of Tycoon's last Saturday night.  We were charged a $5 cover for the band playing upstairs even though our only intention was to go downstairs to have cocktails at Rathskeller. (An intention that would be thwarted as I will explain.)  Then just to enter the basement level bar, they take and keep your ID until you come back up to the main level.  This honestly didn't bother me, but I can see many gov't conspiracy/Art Bell types to freak out over this intrusion of privacy.  You also need to be prepared to wait as Rashskeller only seats 60 (pretty typical for a speakeasy type of set-up).

With all of this crazy lead-up, you are expecting an amazing speakeasy style bar with hand-crafted cocktails, homemade bitters and such as you find in such joints in every city in the U.S. in the last few years.  Well, get ready for a HUGE let down.  These people don't even KNOW about hand-crafted cocktails, let alone serve them.  After paying your cover, waiting in line and hocking your ID, you get presented with...wait for it...a BEER menu.  And it's not even an inspired beer menu!  You can get a much better curated beer selection (and actual hand-crafted cocktails BTW) at Lake Ave Cafe down the street.  I asked the waitress for a cocktail menu and first she seemed confused.  When I persisted, she got condescending and told me that they "don't have a blender".  Oh yeah, I forgot that all cocktails are made in a blender!  Back in the speakeasy days it was all frozen margs, strawberry daiquiris and pina coladas!  Nobody ever imbibed something like an Aviation or French 75.  Then she proceeded to tell me that they are primarily a scotch bar, but strangely, there is also no scotch menu.  I ended up ordering a Makers Old Fashioned, and it was bland at best.  I can make a better Old Fashioned in my sleep.  Instead of staying for the 3 cocktails I would have stuck around for if they were good, I gave the rest of my first to my husband and we split after one round.

On the plus side, this place is DROP DEAD GORGEOUS. That just adds to my irritation though.  What a waste of a space.  In a bigger city, a bar could never get away with this, but to their credit, the joint was packed the night that we went.  So maybe for Duluth, you can charge a $5 cover, make people wait and surrender their ID to get the same glass of beer you can get at a dozen places within a short walk.  Or maybe Duluthians will wise up and expect a little more and take their business to Lake Avenue or one of many other deserving cocktail providers.  My hope is pinned on the latter!

This is a new location that a friend of ours recommended. The service was very fast. we got a nice spot on stage. We are at tycoons on 25/2/2012 the food was amazing. My burger was a bit over cooked but it was still good. The drink selection is large. The scotch was very cheap. People must not order it much. The deserts are divine!! omg the chocolate cake was sooo large  3 people can share it.

We went there on a Friday night right after the place opened, and as we expected it was busy and there would be a wait. The people watching was so entertaining that my fiancé and I didn't even mind the 30 minutes it took us to get our table. (You did have the option of waiting at the bar, but as it appeared they were having problems finding those who migrated that way, so in the name of getting a table we opted to stay nearby.) Once we were seated, our server was very friendly and attentive. The decor was really inspired--true to the period they were aiming for without being over the top. The food was similar to what you would find at the other Fitger's owned establishments, with some twists. It was quite good, and the prices were reasonable. The only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is because they were clearly working out the opening kinks, thus not worth a perfect score. However, it was a solid experience,  and we will definitely go back!

It's the hottest new spot in one of the oldest buildings - Duluth's original city hall, downtown Duluth.  Check out the smoked fish appetizer or the burgers.  One friend exclaimed it "was the best burger he had in a restaurant EVER!"

Starts with a half pound of fresh local grind, special seasonings.  "Pacific Style" adds lettuce, tomato, shaved onion, avocado and garlic mayo.

    Superb.

I will start out by mentioning that this place just opened I believe on the 1st. So I understand there will be some kinks.

Our experience wasn't a bad one...but probably one of the most entertaining meals of my life (we kind of thought we were on a tv show as it was all so bizarre).

Our server was very nice, friendly, and helpful... however completely clueless!
Upon entering the restaurant my friend sadly told me they didn't have mimosas (for some reason she really wanted one) but when the server came to take my drink order he hands me the drink menu and says "we have mimosas" to my friend I ask "who did you order from" her response, "HIM!" so she tries to order it again I order a cocktail with gin, muddled cucumber, mint, and soda. Our server comes back "we don't have mimosas." Oh boy. They also didn't have any mint or cucumber as they were serving a "limited bar" this is fine, as I understand they just opened, but maybe tell that to the table before giving them the menu or don't use the drink menu yet if the bar hasn't been filled.

Tycoons is a bar that is owned by the Brewhouse so I would think the servers would have had good training on beer. Yet our server said to us, "I am no expert on beer, but I can name them to you."  While also referring to the size of beer as a pint (he pronounced it like pinto (without the o).

I'm also pretty sure he had never been a server EVER, and yes you need to start somewhere but I'm thinking he needed a bit more training. At one point during our meal he says to us (with one more onion ring on the plate) "oh thanks for saving me an onion ring, I have been wanting to try them" to this (jokingly) my mother says "oh yes we saved it just for you" and he actually picked it up from the plate, dipped it in blue cheese and shoved it in his mouth! (while chewing saying "I'm probably braking all sorts of health code violations." I was dumb struck, and couldn't look up as I would have burst out laughing. In all my years working in restaurants I have never heard or seen such a thing!

My brother asked for a lemonade and he comes back and says "I'm sorry we don't have lemonade, but we do have mellow yellow." (wait, what?!)

The food was very good. I had the mussels in the butter, basil sauce. Very tasty but it was served with a  grilled baguette that was BLACK. I couldn't believe that anything that burnt would ever leave a kitchen. I think three of the 5 of us had the wild rice burger and they were all enjoyed.

Our server dropped our check before asking if we wanted anything else (were still eating and planning on having another cocktail).

I would definitely go back and try this place again (good food, nice server) But I would give it a month or so to continue to train their servers and work out the rest of the kinks.
