Wow, what a disappointment. Service was extremely slow. My 2 friends and I went on a busy Saturday night and waited 30 minutes to be seated (not too bad). We were ready to order by the time we were seated but waited 15 minutes or so to order. We waited another 30 minutes just to get bread and then waited another hour to get our food! We were there for 2 and a half hours!!
I ordered the butterflied shrimp for around $15. It was good but I only got 5 pieces of average-sized shrimp. Definitely not worth the price. My friends said the same - not worth the price. MAYBE the food gets 3 stars but the service and the amount of food dropped the rating down to 1 star.
Never going here again.
Stopped in during the late afternoon on a stormy weekday armed with a $15 http://restaurant.com voucher. Ordered up the Bayman's Best (white) with manhattan clam chowder and the fried clam strips app ($22.50 minimum). There was some miscommunication throughout the meal; though service was friendly, it was very inconsistent and strongly favored the other two filled tables (filled, coincidentally, with regulars). Cozy little old-school joint but a borderline-painfully-long experience for the # of courses. That said, food was very tasty, especially the white wine sauce for the mussels (sopped up with bread) and the baked clams (which I'd recommend the BOGO deal for next time). Would stop back for some other dishes if I was in the area and had quite some time set aside for a good-value meal.
Review Source:Presently relishing in the tingles of anaphylactic shock in my throat, I'm going to rave about this hutch on the side of a lonely road, a true hole in the wall, a gem!
My heritage of growing up on the Jersey bayshore demanded that I order the Bayman's platter, an unfairly generous meal. Â For about $15, I get a cup of clam chowder, half dozen clams on a half shell, three baked clams, and a mound of mussels. Â So here's the breakdown:
-Rhode Island Clam Chowder tasted homemade and tons of clam. Â I prefer some tomato in mine, not just plain clam broth, but I guess it wouldn't be Rhode Island style then. Â Not the first time that state has been wrong.
-Clams on half shell....not much to say here other than they were fresh, ergo, delicious.
-Baked clams, crusty outside, warm inside...good but could have used a bit more clam bits inside.
-A GIANT F----N HEAP OF MUSSELS! Â I asked if the red sauce was spicy. Â Waitress replied, "Not too much." Â I replied, "But I like spicy", she answered "Then we'll make it spicy!" Â And damn it was good. Â A fresh sauce with flavor i.e. garlic and spice, not too much to ask. Â (By the way, this exchange also denotes that the help was, in fact, helpful, although we were the only group in the place. Â Still, I give a compliment when it's due. Â )
So I leave fat and content.
Felt a little out of place. Service was a little cold to us. Friendly to locals, but not when we walked in with our family for lunch. Fried clam strips were delicious, but the broiled cod filet sandwich soaked through my bread. Everything fell apart and was super soggy. I didn't complain or ask for it to be taken away. I really loved the seafood chowder.
Not sure if I will come back though.
This is my new favorite place to go to with my family on weekends. Â The seafood is clearly fresh and the people there are friendly. Â It was recommended to me by my sailing instructor who happens to be one of the best in the area. Â Mussels were great specially when I dunk my break in the sauce. Â I will be trying each item on the menu since it is obvious that the Chef knows what he is doing. Â Looking forward to my next visti (this weekend).
Review Source:All the soup choices are delicious. I've tried them all. Â Once in a while I will treat myself to the mussels. Tasty. Â My favorite lunch is the linguini with white clam sauce. I usually go to the specials board for variety. I haven't tried dinner yet, but recommend the lunch specials. The service is always friendly.
Review Source:This was my first visit to Varney's. It's essentially a small little place with about a dozen small tables with dated furnishings. Upon first glance at the place you'd probably think the food would be second rate. That is not the case. All of our meals were very very good. We also had the clams on the half shell appetizer. Clams seemed very fresh and cold. The one item which stood out (in a not so good way) from everything else were the baked clams. They were merely okay. If you prefer a baked clam that is somewhat bland with hardly a hint of clam you'd probably rate them very good. They were a two for one special so you got double the amount. Even with that being the case you'd probably better off with one of the other appetizers - mussels, clams or the like.
We had heard that everything was cooked to order so we expected to wait a while. We were not prepared to sit there for at least 10 minutes before anyone came over to the table. It was quite busy at the time but there is no excuse for not even making the effort to come over to say hello or take a drink order. Service remained slow even after the restaurant had cleared out and it was just us and one other table which was occupied. This, along with the baked clams, is the reason this place doesn't get 5 stars. Matter of fact I'd have given 3 1/2 stars if that was an option.
.
Another one for the "old Long Island" files... Â Classic spot & a no-brainer when in the Bellport area. Â The seafood soups are always great and you must get the clam chowder if they are available. Â Kitchen has a particularly great hand with clams whether baked, on the half shell or when offered (all to rarely) on aforementioned soups. Â Overall excellent comfort food, particularly the seafood but also with classics like chicken parmesan. Â Portions are gigantic. Â Staff is relaxed and friendly and you can see them treating the regulars with all the extra love and attention that any great places shows theirs. Not the faintest trace of attitude or pretentiousness could be found anywhere near the vicinity, a great place to hit on the way to or from the Hamptons and better food than you will find pretty much anywhere out there (excluding Montauk).
Review Source:When you walk into Varney's, you can quickly forget that you're in suburbia and feel as if maybe you stepped 25 years into the past, into the small seaside town without chain restaurants and box stores, where people live simple lives and enjoy simple pleasures.
Varney's doesn't try to be anything more than it is - an old school restaurant with basic dishes built around fresh seafood.
The service is friendly and prompt.
Tried the fried clam strips (simple but fresh), the New England clam chowder (four stars on that one) and the linguini with white clam sauce (disappointed here - sauce was just chowder clams cut up - this dish is much better with little necks, seems a little cheap to cut corners there considering pasta costs next to nothing and there's little else to justify the $20/plate cost.
On the whole, I can't call the dishes refined or creative.
And therein lies the problem - for the same prices, just a bit down the road, Porter's or Painter's both offer far better fare. There's nothing wrong with basic, but the pricing has to match.
For my $20/plate, I'll go with the sea scallops over white truffle risotto at Porter's or something similar at Painter's.
If you're just in the mood for a bowl of chowder, or maybe a couple of beers with some clams on the half shell, this is your place. For the full dinner treatment, I think there are better options within a two-minute drive.
They are awesome!! Â I want to eat their mussels in white wine sauce right now. My friend, Allison, Â enjoyed eating mussels in red win sauce, so please chose your sauce. Mussel dishes are to die for, if you like sea food. Â Please do not worry, they serve enough italian bread to soak up "very goooooood sauce". Table services by ladies are very good. I have met three ladies. They are very nice. If you like shellfish, I recommend Baymen's best for first timers. I cannot wait to get back there. We have to put up a picture of mussel dish soon.
Review Source:Billy Joel said it best: either you date a rich girl from the North Shore or a cool girl from the South Shore.
My wife & I have been North Shore folks for over 20 years. We went on dates every weekend in Huntington Village, We both went to college on the North Shore but in all reality, I grew up on the south shore. I clammed as a kid with my friends on the south shore and sold them to guys in restaurant trucks.
Now, my wife wants a nice fish dinner. I'm not going to The Steam Room in Port Jeff where I live, ugh.. Land & Sea, not feeling it. My buddy Manny says this place rocks, lets go down south!
I walk in and its a nice cozy place. We're seated next to a painting by J. Varney. I like that, this place as some heart.
My kids order kids meals, hamburgers with some pretty good french fries!
We start with soups, I ordered Manhattan style and my wife orders seafood bisque. (They were out of Block Island)
My wife orders whole clams. OMG! They tasted fresh and were really good.
I ordred the Broiled Bay Scallops that came with a pasta, rice or something else. I wasn't feeling any of that so I let my little guy dig into some of it and brought the rest home, The Scallops were broiled but just sitting in a pool of butter. It was just ok, I wasn't impressed.
I had to go thru Patchogue Village to get home. It was a nice feeling to see the town again but I wont be back to Varneys.
Piggy backing on the other reviews. Great family run place. Not pretentious. Mussels and clams had my mouth watering, the salmon special was flavorful, and the beer was cold. Sat at the bar and had to crane my neck to watch the Yankee's game, but it was worth it to see them lose.
I'd go back again if I had time.
I agree with Leo B. the mussels here are amazing - I like the red. Â The clam chowder is delicious, available in Manhattan and Block Island style. The half-shell clams are clean and tasty and are a good bet.
However, they have a "special" on the baked clams which isn't so special at all.
The service is attentive and there's a little outdoor patio for al fresco style dining.
