I love Viceroy unreservedly. It's our go-to place for Indian delivery. As a vegetarian, I have tons of options. My husband was not really a fan of Indian before we first got Viceroy, but went along with me to many a place (on Devon or otherwise) to be nice. Now we have somewhere we both like -- at the restaurant, for delivery, whatever. It's delish.
Review Source:The reviews of this place are very interesting. This was the restaurant that made me like Indian food for the first time and encouraged me to keep trying it. Â Prior to this I really thought I disliked Indian cuisine. Â So... maybe I just don't know real Indian food -- Â or maybe I don't like the authentic stuff and like this better. Â Regardless, I've made multiple trips back here over the last year and will continue to come back.
Maybe the take out section isn't as good? I don't know. I've always been in the main dining room and had a great meal and friendly service.
There is nothing quite like the delicious taste of authentic Indian food- YUM.
The food here is fresh and rich in contrasting tastes. The Tikka Masala is my favorite Indian dish (as is by popular demand in general), and their version was so tasty- I had seconds and thirds! The dish contains chicken cooked with masala sauce which is a creamy and spicy sauce. Very delicious!
I also redeemed a Yelp coupon here for a free dessert! The manager was extremely helpful in taking care of that smoothly for us. I ordered the mango kulfi (indian ice cream). It was my first experience with kulfi, but a great one! Kulfi is very creamy, rich, and nothing like I have ever had in the states. I was glad to have tried it here where everything was so fresh!
A wonderful restaurant in an authentic Chicago Indian-American town.
This is just not good.
Perhaps if I'd just ordered off the menu instead of getting the lunch buffet I might have had a better experience but as it was this was just not good.
The food was for the most part lukewarm, which is okayyy I guess given that it's a buffet. But even delicious food is still delicious when it's lukewarm. The saag was the best part, but still subpar. Too much oil/ghee/cream and not enough actual greenery. I wished there had been a better selection of items as well, but again even a minimal selection is acceptable if the food is good enough. The tandoori chicken that was brought to the table wasn't remotely authentic (ie it was pink and quite obviously out of some kind of packet). It was passable but no substitute for the real thing. Also nothing was even marginally spicy or for that matter flavorable. The naan was good, as was the mango kulfi. Then again those are the two hardest things to mess up so I'm not awarding extra stars.
Service was excellent and decor was...nice?
I left with my craving for the cuisine mildly sated, but I will never go back. For 8.99 I guess it was worth it but only if all you're looking for is food to fill your belly.
We were very disappointed with this restaurant. We ordered the Malai Kofta and Paneer Makhani. They gave us the same gravy for both dishes. Just that one had paneer pieces and one had koftas. These two dishes have different graves, when we mentioned it to the staff, they didn't seem to care. We explained to them, why wold we order two similar dishes. They didn't care and did not offer to explain their dishes nor did they offer to change anything. Very disappointed with the food. It was below average in taste. The service was even more disappointing. Â There are many more better Indian restaurants on Devon. Avoid this one for sure.
Review Source:I always come here because they have good Groupon deals. The decor is fancy, but on weekdays, I come in wearing jeans and they don't say anything about it. I brought my friend who is totally new to Indian food here last week - she LOVED it! The Chicken Tikka Masala is very tasty, especially with the naan. We also had Lamb Biryani which was ok and the Chicken Tandoori, which was tasty but not as spicy as I would have liked. We also ordered the pistachio ice cream and the chocolate cake, which is spiced with saffron or cardamom or something exotic like that - delicious!
I've been in Chicago for a year and am an Indian food snob from California. This place is one of my favorite places to dine in Chicago and the staff is always SO, SO friendly!
I love this place 2nd time I've been there and enjoyed it, will for sure be back!!!!!!!!!
Pros:
food is great, servers extremely nice and attentive, amazing mango ice cream, nice decor,
Only thing I would say is you're looking for quick in and out meal like most fast paced Americans are I would call ahead and pick up. spent 2 and half hours in here we didn't really mind because it was traffic hour anyways.
One of the very few, best places for Indian cuisine! Casual place where the food never fails every time I go here. I would always go for butter chicken, chicken 65, tandoori chicken, the platters that they have (good for 2-3 people), tried their lamb and seafood selection, never fails!
Pros:
- 15 to 20 min wait for the food, but there's this appetizer they have something like tortillas for you to munch on while you wait.
- Â I always get seated right away (most of the time at the same seat I was at the previous time) even when it's groupon night when everybody goes because of expiring deal.
- food taste great!!!
-great customer service.
- lunch and dinner buffet!!!
Cons:
- street parking... I drive around a lot and have to find parking at most places I go to, so I'm used to this. Farthest I've parked is half a block from this place. The most time I took to look for parking was not more than 10mins.
The servers I'd say could use some more English. They seem to know English, but a couple seems like they just came from the motherland, knows a bit of English and with really thick accents to the point that I don't really understand what they just said (trust me, it's really heavy accent). I would not count this as a con as it is part of their restaurant facade as an Indian restaurant. Last time I went here, the same servers were still there, but they hired a new guy that was born here in 'Merica, but knows both language (English and Indian), as well as the Indian culture. He suggested the Chicken 65 and is now one of my favorite Indian dish.
But just like the many Chinese restaurants out there, their dishes are catered to the American taste buds. I've heard from other people (some are Indian) that authentic homemade Indian food is spicier. Nevertheless, I still see Indian people go to this place, which means the food taste close to what they would serve at home. So word of advice? Don't expect much if you've had authentic, homemade Indian food. Otherwise, try this place if you are craving Indian food and you are near by.
Okay we ordered delivery from this place... we knew that there were going to be problems when after placing the order and giving the credit card info we get a phone call from the restaurant.
when we were on the check out page it had a question about condiments / utensils. on this pop up menu it has mango chutney and tamarind sauce. we were like cool! so we check both off as they offered free as a condiment.
so they called to say that there would be an additional charge for the tamarind sauce of $1.50 and $2.50 for the mango chutney. I was like really it said it was free. so either send it as free or KEEP IT! the guy tells we will send just the tamarind sauce for free.
the food gets here smells OMG GREAT! and wait what NO RICE ??? every Indian place i have gone to gives you some portion of rice with the curry dish if not just in general with any food order. So maybe they forgot it!! i called them and they said NO rice does not come with any thing on the menu it is separate. two main dishes, naan and an appetizer -- $40.00 for delivery!
so did i mention that the food was cold on arrival??? no yeah it was so we put in the oven while we made our own rice.
Thanks but not ordering here again!
oh and did i say that the driver mentioned, please order from us again as we need your business!!!!
NOPE NOT NOW!
I'm a big fan of Indian food. Whether it be super authentic Indian food a la my friend's mother's cooking or if it is a $3 meal from Trader Joes, I am a fan. That said, Viceroy is good, but it's definitely not my favorite Indian joint on Devon. It can at times veer closer to a Trader Joe's meal than something a bit more authentic. It really depends on what you order.
The service has always been great and the food is generally satisfying. They also make ridiculously strong drinks which may have influenced this review.
My husband and I have come here several times and though the food is great, what we really enjoyed was the good service. The waiters are always kind and more than willing to help. Your water glass is always full and they are quick to answer any questions. A little tip we learned is to ask for the onion lemon side dish, it's a wonderful compliment to any dish. And the mango ice cream, also delish. It's worth a try.
Review Source:I was actually surprised to see that Viceroy only has 3 stars. Â I thought everything we got was really good. Â I'm interested to try the southern Indian dishes, because that's something you don't see too often in Chicago. Â It is a little pricey, and but the portions are generous. Â Overall I had a good experience.
Review Source:I had two expired Groupons.
I went  with my wife for  buffet lunch yesterday @ Viceroy.
Viceroy management did not honor my Groupons even for the $ 10 actual paid value.
Viceroy management was very unfriendly & argued as under.
1]
This was a promotion by Groupon & that they [Viceroy management] were not getting even this $ 10 per coupon.
It is Groupon who get this $ 10 per coupon & not Viceroy. Â
2]
Even if the voucher was for $ 10 actual paid up value, now we were required to Dine -n & A-La Carte only if we wanted to use the expired groupon.
Even carry out order could not be paid by this expired coupon of actual paid up value of $ 10 each. .
3]
Dine in Buffet Lunch or any carry out  could also not be paid by any Groupon, expired or otherwise.
We are very unhappy & disenchanted with this non-friendly & unreasonable attitude of Viceroy management . Â
Though we had with us $ 20 worth Groupons [actual paid up] we had to pay separately over $ 20 for our buffet lunch.
Now we are left with two expired - unused Viceroy Groupons each of $ 10 value [$ 20 total].
With the recent unpleasant experience @ Viceroy we would not like to visit them again nor could we see our way to recommend Viceroy to our friends. Â
We would appreciate if Groupon could get us a refund [or even a credit we would be able to use against our future purchases] for our $ 20.

This place is like the Spirit Airlines of Indian restaurants. They provide sub par service with bland execution while nickel and dime-ing you from entrance to exit. Extra charge for rice with all entrees??? What gives?
It'll get you to your destination. But it won't be any fun at all.
This should be a 1.5 but they don't allow you to do it so it gets a 1. Being from England I've found nothing harder in this country then to find a good curry. Sure you have Tiffin, 4 for me, that place in Lincoln Square, 3, and you have god knows how many on Devon. Somehow I ended up getting take away here. 2 chicken curries 1 mild 1 medium, 1 lamb vindaloo, 2 garlic nan's, and 2 Samosas. Â They say 30-45 minutes but ends up being 80, oh well if it's a good meal it's worth the wait right?
Get home, notice the grease leak on my new leather seats and wonder. Open the bag and first thing I see, no rice, NO RICE? From an Indian take away, blasphemy! Oh well, grab our 3 tubs of food looking for some markings to tell the difference, ah no. Figure out which are the chickens at least and just mix the "mild & medium" to get an average. samosas are stone cold and taste like, I won't go there.
Open the garlic nan, which is not even warm and very doughy and about to just chuck it all in the bin and taste the curry, AMAZING!
So so so sad that EVERYTHING else I got was absolute crap. So if you're looking for a good curry and NOTHING else at all, no rice, no nan, Â Give this place a try. If your looking for a meal, go somewhere else on Devon, anywhere else on Devon but this place.
The lack of passion in flavor and spice is also reflected on the a la carte menu. Â Where did the naan or rice go that usually comes with the main dish?
Viceroy Special Biryani was a welcomed subtle dish.
The 90% cooked Gulab Jamun had an elongated shape.
The unripened mango chutney was sour.
At Viceroy of India...expect the unexpected.
My husband and I went to Viceroy of India today, Monday, for their daily lunch buffet and had a great time and really enjoyed our food too. Â It was very peaceful, clean and pretty elegant, and the waiter was very nice and sincere. Â There weren't many people there since it's Monday, but I knew it was a very good place because a yelper whose opinion I respect a lot recommended this place. Â They had so much delicious food in the buffet and a lot of it, so I wanted to let others know to go there! Â
The food was very well flavored/seasoned. Â We don't like too much heat and so were very pleased because we felt all the seasonings and flavors were delicious. Â We loved the butter chicken the most, but also the saag paneer, the goat (curry I think), the Tandoori chicken which I mention below, and basically everything.
We each had a mango lassi for $4 each, and then the lunch buffet for $8.99 per person. Â With tax and the drinks it was $28.50, so we were out of there with a nice tip left for $35. Â
They also put a sizzling hot-plate of Tandoori chicken on our table when we went to go to the buffet. Â It was a fun surprise to find on our table when we came back. Â I guess it's included as we were never charged for it. Â It was a very interesting distinctive flavor. Â We definitely liked it but were so full we didn't finish so they let us take it home. Â
They had a few desert options as part of the buffet which is nice. Â I had some mango ice cream and what seemed to be watery rice pudding. Â I mixed the two together and I definitely enjoyed it.
My only regret is that I didn't come with a bigger appetite! Â We will definitely be back.
With the exception of the chicken makhani, the food here was mediocre. The dishes that were made with a sauce had a sauce that was bland and watery. Of particular disappointment were the samosas. I'm used to samosas that have a crispy shell, but these were mushy from the start, and their potato and veggie interior was rather flavorless. The service was friendly and attentive, but that's not enough to draw me back, especially when Devon Avenue offers so many other South Asian restaurants to choose from.
Review Source:Forget Parsley, Sage, Rosemary, & Thyme. Â If I ever make my way to Scarborough Fair, I'm bringing Garam Masala, Cumin, Coriander, and Turmeric...
I love Indian food, and with Groupon's assistance, I branched out from my favorite little places to Viceroy of India. Â The atmosphere was definitely fancier than I was used to (I felt a bit underdressed at first), but my date and I were cheerily greeted and escorted to our booth in a room that smelled utterly incredible. Â I'll admit I've never been a huge fan of Papdi, but the plum chutney was lovely.
I'll say this for most of the reviews I've seen thus far - they're all pretty spot on. Â I ordered the lamb tikka masala, which though incredibly delicious and tender and perfectly (by which I mean super-perfectly) spiced -- for $15 seemed a bit small. Â Or at least could have come with some basmati. Â My date ordered the Tandoori Mixed Grill, which for an extra $5 brought her smaller plates of Tandoori chicken (which was incredible), Lamb Kebab (which was so tender I might have cried a little), Chicken Tikka, Butter chicken (another delight), dal makhani, and rice. Â So.Much.Food. Â And the garlic naan. Â Sweet sweet garlic naan...
Between the both, we were stuffed silly, and still had a bit to bring home for later. Â But had we both opted for the traditional entrees, the outcome likely would have been different.
The service was very attentive, and my water glass never saw less than half full, although I wonder how much of that was out of concern for our spice tolerance (for the record, mine is pretty respectable).
If I were to offer a negative on the trip, it was in the back of the restaurant. Â Before the meal, I went back to wash my hands, and I have to say that while men's rooms have a tendency to not be the most rosey-smelling places on Earth, this one was particularly un-rosey. Â It was bad. Â Real bad. Â But in all fairness, I'm not eating there. Â I'm eating in the dining room, where it smells like delicious Indian cuisine. Â And really, that's all I ask of my Indian restaurants...
Another weekend, another Indian food gorge fest. I would not come back here for many reasons. The service was top notch and the decor stood out as very clean and nice.
The food was so disappointing. Everything except to the tandoori chicken had the taste of frozen and reheated. The prices are out of control and the portions were less than expected.
Samosas: These were not the fresh well made fried dream pillows of so many places on Devon. They were bland and flavorless and the centers were still cool.
Chicken tandoori: $10 for 4 small peices that looked like they came from the rejects of KFC. but the taste was very good. Â I would recommend this to anyone that wanted to stop here. My kids loved it and they know.
Chicken Tikka: The gravy was loose and the chicken was dry. This means that the chicken was cooked outside the gravy and then reheated by simmering till warm. Â This is an ok method for the home cook that uses swad to get the taste but for 8 small chunks of chicken $15 I THINK NOT.
Peas Pullaw: a handful of peas on top of basmati no spices
Naan: Thin and crunchy and then as it cooled became rubbery (reheated)
saag paneer: Was very good but not worth the trip alone.
All attempts at south Indian were bad.
It sounds like this place was once good but look at the changes in the tone and tenor or the reviews. TOTAL over $70 for 2 young kids and 2 adults
The good: the setting and decor is nice and so are the mango lassi and all the breads/naans.
The okay: the food was nothing spectacular, but overall it was still enjoyable. We got the special seafood combo sizzling platter meal, which was a little sparse on the seafood, but well-prepared. It also came with lentils and basmati rice. We also got a separate dish - it was baby eggplants in a type of yellow curry - I didn't really like it but my roommate did. The service as okay, albeit awkward at times when there were misunderstandings.
The bad: um, was that really a samosa that I was eating? because there was absolutely no flavor. Their website was also kind of deceiving in a way. Their eat-in prices were about 25% more expensive than what was listed online.
Go hungry and do the Lunch Buffet. I like to go up to Devon to "do" Indian at the Viceroy then hit the Indian grocery stores and replenish my spice cabinet. Devon Ave. is where you will find the best prices on curry, garam masala, bay leaf, chutney, ghee (Try popcorn with ghee and a little curry)
The great thing about Chicago is you can travel to these ethnic neighborhoods and do a cultural immersion and still sleep in your own bed that night.
I at Viceroy of India for lunch on Sunday and took advantage of the lunch buffet. Â The decor of the restaurant is nice - white table clothes on both the booths and tables. Â The service was so-so at best. Â I think the expectation is that most people are there just for the buffet and minimal attention is needed. Â Also, the bus boy (man) stepped on my friend's foot twice and dripped water on him during the meal. Â Not great service...
The buffet options were good - a nice variety of vegetarian and meat. Â The chana masala was the best dish as it had ample spice in the sauce which really made the chick peas pop and it was good for dipping your naan into. Â The tandoori chicken was also pretty good as well - the chicken was moist and the flavor was just right for the dish. Â The other dishes sag paneer, goat curry, and samosa were so-so as the flavors were not as strong as I would have expected. Â Bland and Indian food don't necessarily go together. Â Perhaps they expect a lot of tourist (or non-Indian) foot traffic and tone down the spice level of their food?
The desserts available were OK - the mango ice cream was a nice finish to our meal and the jalabi was good but had a somewhat strange after-taste to it.
Overall, Viceroy of India offered a great selection in their buffet with mixed service at best. Â With all of the options up and down Devon I would explore other places after having eaten here.
2 stars for the prices and portion sizes. Â For $14, I want more than a small bowl of butter chicken. Â I think we were charged extra for the rice too, but I wouldn't know since the bill did not break that information down for me. Â The service was polite. Â The waiter who picked up our folder as we were walking out checked the tip right in front of us before saying goodnight.
I'm disappointed because this place came highly recommended by a friend.
Went here on a Saturday night and it was quiet. Â Probably around half full. Â The decor marked it out as a higher end indian eatery, with prices to match. Â On the upper end of what I'm willing to pay for a curry. Â My entree (prawn vindaloo) cost $17.95 and came with neither rice nor naan. As other people have mentioned, the portions weren't especially large and the dish was light on the 'prawn' part of prawn vindaloo. Â The curry actually contained about as much potato as prawn.
Other than the portion size, the food was fine. Â Not amazing, but fine. Â Poppadums with pickles were fetched out immediately as we sat down (lime pickle was very good), and after ordering, the rest of the food arrived promptly. Â The menu is great for vegetarians and is very comprehensive. The saag paneer (paneer cheese in spinach sauce) was really nice, and everybody who ordered a mango lassi seemed to enjoy it greatly. Â I had a "Taj Mahal" beer, which was a pretty bland and tasteless lager. Â I'd not drink this again, but this isn't the fault of the restaurant.
Overall an enjoyable visit, marred only by the high price/small portion combo. Â I can imagine feeling much better about the viceroy if I had come here for lunch and paid $10 for the buffet.
Late edit: The garlic naan bread was *very* garlicky, and I mean this in a really good way. Â After just one garlic naan I'll be able to sleep a night without waking in a cold sweat, panicking about vampire home invasions.
May be nice for a buffet type thing...but not if you thought you were getting a deal by purchasing an online voucher from Living Social, Groupon, etc.
We were completely ripped off at this place - paying $15 for literally 5 little bites of chicken masala. Seriously!? We could've had all you can eat for $6 less. But they wouldn't allow us to touch the buffet since we had a voucher. They also must be used to letting people self serve because the service was HORRIBLE! It took 15 minutes just to waive our server down and another 15 to get a glass of water. 30 minutes waiting on the bill.
Will not be coming back. Ever.
Oh Viceroy, you purveyor of fine Indian food!
The butter chicken has a nice savory flavor and tender bite-sized chunks of chicken. Â The lamb keema's spicy kick can be gently mellowed by drizzling the avocado Raitha yogurt salad onto it as you eat.
Samosas? Smashing.
Lassi? I could bathe in that sweet nectar.
Lamb, chicken, vegetarian, every facet is excellent. The portions are generous and reheat well the next day.
For a truly sumptuous experience, I recommend you bring friends, share entrees, skip the rice, go in with the intent of eating with your hands, and use naan or garlic naan as your utensils. The Viceroy is a classy joint with attentive waiters, but they don't mind if you kick it old school Mumbai style.
Stopped in here for the first time during their Lunch Buffet and had an above average lunch.  The restaurant is one of the cleanest on Devon...always  a plus for me.  The buffet was a decent spread with a good mix of vegetarian options.  For the most part, the Indian flavors that I have been accustomed to were lacking.  Everything was average.  I would have given it two stars if it was not as clean as it was, there was a pleasant staff and for the simple fact that I will probably go back.  Can you really give a 2-star review to a place that you will return to?  One of life's true mysteries.
Good... not Great.
Vitals:
$9.00 Buffet
+ Diet Coke
$15.00 total
I went here with David J. for a Saturday buffet lunch. My initial impression was positive. The staff (or at least the manager) was nice and welcoming. Usually I experience no personality when dining at Indian restaurants. The decor is a little outdated (very similar to a banquet hall), but when you're hungry nothing else matters but the food.
Fortunately for me, most of the buffet dishes were vegetarian. The samosas were huge and hot. I tried almost everything, but had more of the palak paneer and paneer makhani. The sauce for the latter was a little thin for my liking, but acceptable. It wasn't the best Indian food I had, but if it's affordable and decent, I'll shove the food down my mouth.
For around $10 per person for the lunch buffet, it's a good deal. I'd rather spend that much and get an assortment of dishes rather than paying per dish. It seriously adds up when you order appetizers and entrees. Just go to a buffet.
PS: If you check in on Yelp you'll be offered free mango ice cream. However, it's already available in their buffet!
I went here for the lunch buffet this past Saturday and was mostly impressed. Â I forget the price...somewhere around $10/person...but it was a very good value. Â I particularly liked the samosas, which were very light and on the softer side. Â They also had great saag paneer. Â Vegetarians will be very happy with the buffet, as it's about 90% vegetarian. Â I tried the butter chicken, and it was good as well, though the ratio of chicken to sauce is on the low side. Â I think there was only one other meat dish, but I didn't check that out.
They offered a couple of things for dessert, including some delicious mango ice cream. Â I also usually love kheer/rice pudding, but the stuff here was the worst I've had. Â It was too soupy and incredibly bland.
Service was pretty good and the staff was friendly compared to some other places on Devon that I've been to. Â Water glasses never got empty, which is important when eating Indian food :) Â The restaurant itself is also well maintained. Â There's a bakery or something straight ahead as you walk through the entrance, so make sure you turn and take the doors to the right. Â Metered parking was also easy to find late on Saturday morning. Â I'll definitely be back!
WOW! I really love this place! Good food and friendly staff  that really care for their quality of food, from what I experienced, and great tasting chai. I'm such a sucker for good chai!
My friend who works here had the great idea for having a school group meeting here to have lunch while working on our Globalization topic. We had the buffet and everything tasted so delicious and fresh! Nothing looked or tasted as if it were sitting there for a while. The rotti and naan bread were always soft and hot and I really loved the tikka paneer and palak saag they had and the basmati rice mixed with vegetables. The samosas looked tempting too, but I was too late to get one because they were all gone! That must be a sign that they were good. Oh my, and I had jalebis for the first time and it was phenomenal!
I really love Devon Avenue! It's a great experience to just walk around the different neighborhoods and embrace cultural diversity.
First lesson in Indian dining, just go for the lunch buffet, eating off the menu is too expensive for the size of the portion. With the buffet you get to try a variety of different dishes at a low price of $11. Their Tandoori Chicken is great so flavorful and moist, the Butter Chicken, is some of the best I have ever had and their curry peas and Samosas are excellent.
Our friend absolutely loves the lamb and the spinach and cheese and tofu in tomato sauce are also equally delicious. Each time I get a craving for Indian I head straight to Viceroy!
Maybe it's because I've eaten at the best Indian restaurant in the city (Luzzat) or maybe it's just because I've eaten and love Indian food so much that I now expect a certain level of flavor. Sadly Viceroy didn't live up to those expectations. Based on what I ate, I would call it Americanized Indian. I know that's harsh and I'm certainly no expect (never traveled to India), but the bland and lack of heat meals that were put in front of me (not to mention only white people in the restaurant which put me off right there) made this statement stand out in my mind. It wasn't terrible by all means just not that heat or taste bud jumping flavor that I've come to expect.
On a positive note, the service is top notch, it's super clean, and though it's a more expensive the portions are bigger.
Vegetable Samosa- One was luke-warm and the other was hot. I was starving so I ate it anyways. I know I could have just sent it back.
Chicken Curry- Boneless cubes of spring chicken cooked in a traditional onion & tomato sauce. Super bland, where is the curry?!
Saag Paneer- Spinach cooked with homemade cottage cheese in a mildly spiced onion, tomato sauce. Also bland
Garlic Naan- Excellent
I know I usually order more but after tasting these I kind of lost my appetite. It's not that I won't give Viceroy another shot but my taste buds have to forgive them and that might take awhile.
I've been on a bit of an Indian kick lately. Okay, I'm always on an Indian kick. Maybe that is why my pants don't fit these days? I digress....
I bought a YouSwoop coupon for Viceroy of India because I had only had take-out from the joint and wanted to try it out in house.
From the start the staff was very attentive, respectful and friendly. I found the atmosphere to be clean and very nice.
As I typically do, I ordered too much food but I thoroughly enjoyed every bit of it. My companion and I had the veggie samosas (light, flaky, fragrant and delicious), Naan (buttery, doughy and crisp), Paneer Makani (flavorful and fresh), Chicken Tikka Masala (very good with smoky flavor), Basmati rice (perfectly cooked) and a lentil something (also very good).
I also enjoyed two glasses of a house Cabernet--should've maybe had one as the pour was really heavy but who am I to say no to another?
Our bill before the YouSwoop was a bit pricey but really not too bad considering the drinks and the nice portion sizes.
One of the more enjoyable Indian restaurant experiences I have had.
So. Â This used to be my favorite place to get Indian food... in the world. Â Perhaps my methods are off, as I use malai kofta as the independent variable in all my scoring. Â But this place's trend has been way downward lately. Â We've kept giving it another chance, hoping we had just been going on off nights. Â But alas...
Take my malai kofta for example. Â Used to be rich, mdoerately spiced, full of fresh flavors, and complex. Â Now it's like three little rolled up baby socks in a velveeta-butter sauce. Â I had to have them box it, then come home and add spices and herbs and other stuff to make my own meal --and why go out to eat if you're gonna come home and cook?
I was going to go on to complain about the canned flavor of the condiments that used to taste so fresh, the lack of fresh veggies that used to be served with the pappadams, the increased drink prices, and the depressed-seeming servers. Â But really, isn't the line about the baby socks in the velveeta-butter sauce enough?
With so many places to get good Indian food, not only in town but here on Devon, I'm not sure we'll be back. Â And seriously, this used to be our FAVORITE PLACE in, like, the WORLD.
Sad.
I just had the worst experience I've ever had with a restaurant. I've never felt so disrespected.
After five years of faithfully eating at Viceroy, my family was delighted to learn that they now offered delivery. We ordered three times with no problem. Tonight, I ordered delivery at 5:07 p.m. We live about 2 miles away, but had an exhausting day and just needed a break. So they said 45 minutes to an hour, which was fine.
Except at 6:15, there was no food, no call, nothing. I called, and was informed the driver would be there in 5-10 minutes. I said "You said 45 min to an hour." He said "Sorry, I don't know what's wrong."
At 6:30, I called again. The guy again said "I don't know what's happened." So I said, "Maybe you can call the driver..."
At 6:40, the driver arrived. He explained he was the only delivery guy on, and if it had ended there, it all would've been fine. But we opened our order to find everything was cold and the sauces we asked for were just missing. I called again and asked if they would give me some of my money back. The guy said "It's winter; food gets cold."
Now, I'm not a scientist or meteorologist, but if you promise food arrives in 45 min to an hour, and it takes an hour and a half, and it's cold, I doubt it's because "it's winter."
The guy said the manager wasn't in, so I asked him to call his manager and ask what would be done for me. He called back and said the manager would give me $10 off my next visit.
At this point, my fiance is removing our dinner from foil packaging and microwaving it. I said, "Not acceptable." The guy said "that's all the manager is willing to do."
I asked if it would be better for them if I showed up in person and complained to whomever was there in front of their guests. He put some woman on the phone who said, "Bring all the food here and we'll give you a refund." I said, "You want me to wrap all of the food up?" And she said, "Yes, bring it all back." I asked her name, to which she said, "I'm not telling you my name" and hung up on me.
Now... look, they know I've ordered from there several times and that my entire family has been in the restaurant dozens of times over the years. I asked for some money back because I paid $53 for dinner that was cold and missing what we asked for. I was lied to. I will never, ever go back or call them for delivery... not because of the food, but because of how I was treated. Awful.
I've always thought the food was overpriced, but it was good, so I paid it... for the quality of service, however, I might as well have gone to the McDonalds drive-thru. At least there you're treated with a little respect.
Went here this evening with Mindy, Jerry, Amanda, and Jami. Everyone who didn't join us: you missed out on some great food, and some lovely company! Although my dining mates were still somewhat full up from their afternoon snacking on Devon, I was famished, having saved up my appetite for Indian food at Viceroy of India.
We began with the requisite poppadom, with various sauces, a nice way to start any Indian meal. We ordered a variety of dishes, including a paneer, a dahl, and a lamb dish. I was the one who ordered lamb pasanda, and I was really happy with the medium heat and subtle spice. We also ordered different breads, from plain naan to mint paratha. Everything was delicious, and well presented. The atmosphere was refined, but not so much so that I felt uncomfortable in jeans.
The company enhanced the meal tremendously, and a big "Thank you" to Mindy for organizing this event. Next time we go for Indian, I hope more of you join us!
One of the many Indian buffets in the area. It does not really stand out as being extraordinary. The food is standard Indian fare with butter chicken, tandoori chicken, and other staple items.
Having said that, the food is actually good. I have been here a few times and have been satisfied on all occasions. I have tried different items on the buffet menu and they all are good. The place has a large seating area and good for groups.
Service is fast and attentive (not that it matters for a buffet). The decor has nothing to talk about, just plain. A decent place if you want to try Indian food in a decent setting.
