I lucked out when I walked into this place. Â Beautiful bar. Â I was dining alone, so I sat there. Â The bartender was very friendly and helpful, suggesting some local craft beers, and discussing some of the menu items. Â I ordered a special, which was a seafood stir fry. Â Very tasty. Â By the end of it, I was getting kind of overpowered by the saltiness of it, but overall enjoyed it. Â Eclectic menu which spans from what you might call upscale pub fare to some asian inspired dishes. All of the food that I saw looked very tasty, and was served by some very nice friendly folks. Â Next time I am in St. Cloud, I would make a bee line for this place.
Review Source:Don't get me wrong, The White Horse is definitely doing some things right, but I think the 5 star Yelp reviews have more to do with St. Cloud's lack of decent dining options than the exceedingly high quality of their food.
People are just looking for a real restaurant in this area, and there are not many options. Â The kind of independently owned places where they actually cook real ingredients from scratch rather than just deep frying a bunch of junk from an Apperts bag. Â The cramped kitchen staff at White Horse is actually cooking!
The menu is kind of a random disaster with not much focus, but there are some winners in the mix. Â I really enjoyed the Green curry, and most of the other Thai / Asian based plates I've had. Â Pizzas are pretty good too. Â I usually order the special of the day. Â The irony, is their bar food is a total snooze. Â The Burgers and Wings are no big deal, even bad on many occasions. Â To me that's just not acceptable when you are in the bar business.
White Horse probably has the Best Beer selection in St. Cloud with a great assortment of Surly brews on draft at all times. Â Killer selection of micros by the bottle too.
You can expect the place to be packed at dinner time, and it usually takes way too long to get a table, then even longer to place an order and actually get your food. Â They always seem to be understaffed, with only a couple waiters serving a full house. Â I'm not sure it's worth the wait when they are busy.
Regardless, I support The White Horse because St. Cloud needs more places like this. Â Just don't get your expectations up too high if you're looking for a special dinner.
