Although one of the owners actually is Italian and the food is good, I just can't get over the fact that they charged me for a salad to go with my pasta. Â My husband got his with his meal, but apparently if you just have the plain old spaghetti, you have to pay extra. Â One of the owners told us that most of the people who go there are from Chicago. Â Really? Â They bypass all those great Italian places to come here? Â Don't think so. Â The food is good Italian comfort food. Â I do take exception to the a la carte stuff though.
Review Source:Zaza has the best Italian food in Valpo - hands down.  It's a tiny little place stuck in a strip mall on the north side.  The owner is one of the partners from what used to be Cafe Paradiso in downtown Valpo, and the menu seems very similar to the old Cafe Paradiso menu.  It has a great selection of reasonably priced pasta dishes, of which I've tried several  and enjoyed them all (LOVED the gnocchi).  The chef prepares simple, straightforward, and very well executed dishes.  Italian food at its best! There is also higher end fare such as steaks and such, but I haven't tried any of those. Â
The disadvantage is that it's a very small place stuck in a strip mall. Â Except for the fact that it is one of very few decent restaurants on the north side of town, the location is just terrible. They've done the best they can to create some atmosphere, but it's a small space and the tables are squeezed in pretty tightly. Â Overall, the decor is nice, but there is only so much they can do with this space. Â The ambiance just isn't there.
