Rolling into Calipatria fairly late in the day, in the midst of an autumnal Salton Sea photo-taking road-tripping expedition, there were few options for dinner, and even fewer that were still open in this half-a-horse town. Since it was right around the corner from our creepy hotel that we were all too happy to get away from, we went for dinner. We were just in time to make it before closing (at 8pm!). We returned for dinner again the next night. And breakfast the next morning. I had a fish taco platter the first night and a vegetarian platter with (holy delicious) chile relleno and a tostada. The food was all delicious and freshly prepared with love. The owners were really friendly and happy to oblige. The fresh salsa bar had a nice range and the horchata was killer. The breakfast huevos rancheros I had were pretty good, though I am not generally keen on doing Mexican for breakfast, anywhere... beggars (with only the most horrifying hotel "continental breakfast" complete with hot brown water on tap available) cannot be choosers. The coffee at Aguayo's was good and they kept the cup full. Very reasonable prices, quiet, clean and accommodating at every meal. If ever I'm back in the area, you'll find me here again.
Review Source:We ate 3 meals here (2 dinners, one breakfast) in 2 days while we were in Calipatria for a Salton Sea photo expedition. Aguayo's is basically the only food game in town (I mean that quite literally), and fortunately it is quite delicious, too. Had the carnitas the first meal -- tons of flavorful pork with a nice side of rice and refried beans. Second dinner was a combo plate with chile rellenos, a cheese enchilada, and a dynamite chicken crispy taco. Everything was fresh, very tasty, very filling. Breakfast was chilaquiles -- tasty, not as excellent as the dinners but still good. My gf had the fish taco plate at one meal, which she enjoyed, and had a similar combo plate and huevos rancheros for brekkie (also good). Very good homemade salsas on hand too, ranging from mild to pretty spicy but not face-melting. The guacamole was good -- I've had better, as it seemed to be missing lime and cilantro, but it was good with the complimentary chips and on my chicken taco.
It's a very mellow place -- we were the only people there for both dinners. It's not remotely fancy, more or less like an old diner, but clean and comfortable. The food is cheap and the portions are very big. And the owners are absolutely wonderful people -- very nice, accommodating, sweet.
If I am ever in Calipatria again I will most definitely eat at Aguayo's, and if you're passing through or staying in town, this is clearly the place to eat.
But not if you roll into town late -- they close at 8 pm.
Good food at a good price. Â We especially appreciated that the folks here don't treat you like an idiot if you're not a local who already knows what's going on. Â They took the time to explain what they offer, and how to get a better deal when ordering. Â You can't say fairer than that.
Review Source:The wife and I stayed in Calipatria, CA while taking pictures at the Salton Sea. Calipatria is a tiny town with not much to do or places to eat. We walked down to Aguayo's one afternoon mainly to get a couple beers. We weren't that hungry but ordered a side of guacamole to go with the free chips and salsa. Seriously...best guacamole I have ever had at a restaurant. Made from really nice Hass avacados, garlic, lime and onions. Just the guacamole alone made us come back the next night for a proper dinner. I had lengua tacos, side of beans and a jalapeno tamale and the wife had fish taco plate. Food was very fresh and had a really nice flavor. Also the owner was supper friendly and a great host. Will definitely stop back when we come back down in November.
