Stopped in for a quick bite to eat on our way to Show Low. I ordered the prime rib French dip and it was very good. They really piled on the meat and the au jus that was served with it had a really good flavor. Hubby had a bacon cheeseburger and again the bacon was piled high on it. Both of us went through several napkins each which in my book means that it's a really good sandwich. The sandwiches come al a carte so we ordered one side of french fries to share. They are sliced fresh with the skins left on and they were very tasty. Service was good and it was nice listening to the jukebox sitting next to us.

    Real potatoes, fresh potatoes!!
The person who wrote this, " Unfortunately, the fries were less to be desired {soggy and under cooked}, I will forever skip the fry experience here - if you want fries from real potatoes go to In 'n Out" doesn't know real potatoes when she eats them. The fries made at Red Onion are made from whole, fresh potatoes cut on order, not processed in some plant, and saturated with water. Red Onion takes a fresh, whole potato, cuts it in a fry cutter, then cooks them. No, they are not going to get artificially crisp because they are not treated and processed. If you want processed, treated, fries, please do skip the fry experience at Red Onion with their delicious, home-made qualities.

I love you Red Onion.  I know this is true because if Al and Diane ever decided to throw in the towel I would not be a happy camper.  I find her quirks charming, you might find them annoying at first, but she will grow on you.
    Service:
If the restaurant is busy the service will be slow.  This is because your server is also your bartender, cashier and busboy.  These folks work their butts off.  Sit down order your beverage and tell your server you would like to order when she brings your drinks back. This way you get in the que.  Wendy is the head server.  She is a sweetheart.  If you are lucky enough to get her, enjoy. You will probably add another star onto your review.
    Food:
This could be the worlds smallest kitchen.  How they crank out that much food is a marvel.  Matthew, the head chef is amazing.  He cuts his own steaks, trims the Prime rib and grinds the meat for the burgers.  They run a great deep fryer and change the oil regularly.  Because the kitchen is so small they take a few short cuts.  Onion Rings are frozen but the deep fryer skills make them above average.  If your meal comes with a vegetable it won't be fresh.  They don't have the room to do it all.  The potato that comes with the Prime Rib is a little funky.  So go back to the salad bar and grab more butter and sour cream.  The fish fry on Friday's is pretty darn good.  You can order just the dinner instead of the all you can eat meal if you have an average appetite. This will give you more money for another adult beverage.  They are known for their burgers and they are good. You can have them cooked to order.  The steak sandwich is a hidden gem. Remember, the salad bar is only included in the dinners and only on Friday and Saturday nights.
So grab a tabletop near the kitchen, stick a couple bucks in the Jukebox and watch four or five cooks in an area the size of your bathroom go to work.  It's the best show in town.

I ate at the Red Onion on my way from the valley to Pinetop. It ended up being a fulfilling pit stop. I came through on a Friday so how could I resist the all you can eat fish fry. It included the famous salad bar that has about 40 different things. The salad bar is nothing fancy and looks a little ghetto to be honest but, it was super tasty. My girlfriend tried the fried shrimp and loved it. They were a little busy and the waitress had many tables so there were some times without complete service however our waitress could not have been friendlier which makes up the difference in my book. I am excited to try one of the burgers next time that I roll through. We were all pretty surprised about the quality put out by the Red Onion in this sleepy little town. A tip would be to get the normal fried fish plate for half the price of the all you can eat fish. The normal plate provides more than enough and includes the salad bar as well. However me being the true man's man that I am will always get the all you can eat.

Whether the Red Onion is busy or empty, prepare to wait.  Is this a strategy to sell more beer?  :-)  The wait never varies!
Everything is grilled or fried, and the grilled items are tasty.  Condiments are fresh, although sloppily cut.  Don't put the 1/4-inch thick onion slice on your burger if you're on a date!
This isn't the best eatery in Heber, but often has a full parking lot.  Location and exterior signage are worth the investment.  :-)

I would not  recommend this place.

Visited this burger place because I was staying the weekend with wife at the family cabin in Heber and there is not much to choose from in this small town. I was expecting more, and take into account my above statement, my expectations were not that high. We walked into to get a to-go order, the sign said "seat yourself" so we sat by the door to keep an eye on our vehicle as we decided what we would want. After about 10 minutes I started to get anxious because no one had so much as acknowledged us yet so we decided to move closer to the bar. We stood by the bar waiting for another 10 minutes at least, often in the way of passing waitresses and still could not get them to stop and take our order. Now before I go on it was not that busy even for a Saturday night, there was so much coverage on the tables that a small group of waitresses had the time to chat in the corner the entire time we were in the restaurant, even looking over at us at one point before going back to their conversation. Not an impressive first impression. We finally flagged down a waitress to take our order and the best way I could describe her, and the staff I had contact with, would be uptight. As we waited to receive our food, and for the waitress to take our money, my wife noticed that not only was the main cook's hair not secured in a hairnet (he had a floppy ponytail that was just resting on his shoulder) he was also handling all of the food barehanded. Now that was not standard operating procedure back when I was a cook and that almost had me out the door without the food and taking my cash with me. I decided to suck it up and get our food and enjoy it, I mean we already made it to this point. The entire experience took close to an hour from walk in to walk out and the food was not bad though my wife compared her burger to Carl's Jr. and I thought that the onion rings were very good. My final judgement is that the food is decent, nothing to rave about, but the service and cooking methods are terrible. I would not  recommend this place to any but the most desperate travelers. I will not go back.

We had an exceptional experience, and can't wait to come back for more! The food was cooked perfectly, and super yummy.  Being part-time residents in this great part of Arizona has had us searching for places to eat out, and you just showed us an excellent option for grownups needing a burger and beer, or a family night out for something more substantial.  Thank you to our great server Wendy for showing us that good food and great service CAN be found in this little town!

There is so little to be excited about in Heber. If you're not careful you might even drive right through Heber without knowing you were there (but at least it's not Rye, AZ).

Thankfully, Heber has the Red Onion!! I thoroughly enjoyed our visit on our way back from Pinetop-Lakeside. The Red Onion had a nice wood-burning fire in the corner when we walked in and the smell of burgers and french fries filled the air.

The service was pretty slow {but I was also really hungry and impatient}. I ordered The Chili Burger and a corn dog and Thomas got the Western and a side of real-potato fries {which sound much better than they were}.

I LOVED my burger!! The chili, onions, burger...everything was delicious! The corn dog was super tasty too. Unfortunately, the fries were less to be desired {soggy and under cooked}, I will forever skip the fry experience here - if you want fries from real potatoes go to In 'n Out.

The Red Onion is now a new tradition that we will always do on the way home from Pinetop-Lakeside.

I was passing thru today and have enjoyed this place in the past so I thought I'd give it a try. The green chili Philly sandwich was very good and so were the onion rings. With the tip it cost $23.00 for lunch, that's pretty steep. The fries or onion rings are extras, the burger or sandwich is ala carte!!!  Can't complain about the food or service they were both very good. Will eat there again.

Oh Heber, how I've passed through you many times, and there really isn't a reason to stop except for gas...or a damn good burger.

I frequent this place usually after a long day at Sunrise going back to Phx, and want a high-caloric meal after skiing all day. I always go with the Green Chile chzburger+bacon and onion rings on the side to nourish my energy starved body. All my bros usually get something along those lines, and we've never been let down.

Kinda set back by the other reviews. I can't believe how high of standards these people have for a roadside restaurant and I've never had anything but great service here. This might be because I'm a nice talkative person who doesn't act like they're better than this place, therefore Red Onion's staff reciprocates this with attentive service.

We recently had lunch at the Red Onion grill.  I was very dissapointed not only by the service, but also by the food itself.  Probably due to the fact that the quality of the food did not warrant the outrageous cost.  Drinks are $2.50 each, and we actually had to go up to the bar to get a refill.  Once our waitress took our order, we never saw her again until food was delivered.  And then not again until our bill arrived.

Food is also alacart.  We had ordered burgers, and had to order french fries and onions seperately.  For $5.99 we received 10 (ONLY 10!!) cold onion rings.

We have cabin in Heber and have been to Red Onion a number of times.  The poor economy has caused other resturants in town to go to seasonal schedules or close.  It's unfortunately that the Red Onion is sacrificing customer service, while also gouging customers "because they can".

Stopped here for lunch during the long drive from Phoenix to Albuquerque. The place doesn't look like much from the outside (or the inside) but the food was actually okay. I tried the barbecue burger and my boyfriend had the green chile burger. Both were decent, especially considering the other options in the area. The fries were too oily but the burgers are good.

Had dinner with the family on a busy Friday night. The hubby had Al's Monster Burger, which he really enjoyed. My son really enjoyed his bacon cheeseburger and my daughter loved her chicken club. I had the best grilled chicken sandwich, seasoned just right and grilled to perfection. I would recommend this place if you are in the area. We visited while on vacation. Service was fast on a busy Friday night, even though a sign said it may take up to a hour, during busy times. Fries could be better but aside from that food was great.

Ugh.  The service is so rotten!  We had to call the waitress over, she ignored us the rest of the time while chatting to locals and we had to stand up to get the bill.  My burger was raw, not rare, and our appetizer came at the same time as the meal.  Never again--we'll tough it out to burger king in  show low.

Since we live in the White Mountain's of Arizona about 30 minutes east of Heber we drive thru the area all the time going to and from places. We have eaten here numerous times through out the years, normaly because it is one of the few if not only places to grab a bite in Heber/Overgaard.

10 years ago this place had great food, the fries were fantastic and the drinks were great. The food has sliped in the last few yearsand the service is hit or miss. The food is ok, it does what food is supposed to do, fill you. It isn't anything to rave about and the pricing is a bit too steep for being what it is. If you order a burger, you get just that a burger, NO Sides as they are an additional charge. Soda is $2.50 a pop, and burgers start at 7 bucks, want a cheese burger add $$.

So if your passing through Heber and it's later in the evening you can stop in a get a bite and something cold to drink. Just don't expect quick service, and decent, family friendly pricing.

During a motorcycle road trip from Phoenix to Santa Fe in 2008, I popped into this joint to wet my whistle and silence the rumble in my stomach.

Great ambiance, great service, ice cold beers and delicious burgers in a local setting.  This place is a must stop for any biker cruising through this region.

Looking forward to my next visit.

My Parents have a cabin in High Country Pines, my girfriend and I frequent this place every time we are there.  The chef at this joint should be working at a 5 star restaurant in Phx.  He rules.  I have never had primerib anywhere like the way he cooks it.  All of his sandwiches especially the French Dip, his burgers, everything this dude cooks is the bomb.  I live out in Ahwatukee down in Phx and cannot find anywhere thats a burger and steak joint that can touch this guys food.  If I was gay I would make the sweet sweet man luvin to his Prime Rib, as well as Al's double bacon burger.  :(

Classic small town bar/cafe atmosphere, heck they prolly host the Elks club luncheon every month too.  Heading East of Payson, unless you hit the Beeline Cafe in Payson, yer gonna be hungry when you get to this place.  Conveniently located on the south side of the highway with easy parking, you can get in and get your (real) country on.  The menu is classic bar/burger joint with some exceptional burgers and my favorite - onion rings - and they don't give you some teeny little cup of ranch to dip these delicious rings in, you get a full-on squeeze bottle.  That's my kind of ringin.  Service is great, price is right and the iced tea has always been fresh.  I make it a point to stop here whenever I'm in the neighborhood.

Burgers aren't bad. Service is usually pretty lousy. Fries are horrible.
Ambiance is what you would expect. Place survives and does what it does because there are no real alternatives in the immediate area. Competition usually makes service and offerings much better.
Worth stopping for if your appetite will not allow you to wait until you get to Holbrook or Show Low.

Seriously? Why is it that some of the best places to get food are the random stops you happen to make because you just happened to drive by it? We were on a road trip from Michigan and felt like if we had any more drive thru we would kill someone. I saw a billboard for the Red Onion Lounge boasting the best burgers around and decided we should check it out.

The inside of this place rocks, it's so rustic and cozy, they had a fire going in the corner too which was nice. The booths are all wood carved and really comfortable, or maybe I was just glad to be out of the car!

I ordered the green chile burger with pepperjack cheese. My bf got their version of the french dip. My burger was amazing, the beef was fresh and grilled perfectly and tasted like a backyard bbq style patty. The green chile was perfect and spicy with the right texture. The bun was also fluffy and delicious and brought the whole thing together. Bf's french dip was so delicious you didn't even need to dip it in the sauce. We also got a side of onion rings and I usually don't care for them but these were amazing I couldn't stop myself from having more than a few!

We were so happy to have such a delicious meal, and almost felt like taking a nap before getting back on the road for the rest of our drive! Too bad we live near the city, it'd be a few hours just to drive back here for another meal. But if we are driving past it in the future you better be sure we are stopping in!

Took a day trip to Heber for father's day to escape the heat. Very good food. My in-laws used to have a cabin in town, and I can't believe we hadn't been here before.
Everything was fresh and the server was attentive.
I do have a compliant that they only have 2 high chairs, being used by a family with twins, so I had to keep my 1 1/2 year old in the booth with me (not an easy task) until that family was done with their meal.

Not bad for a little out of way place. Nothing special as far as the burger is concerned though.

It was Friday night, we were on our way up to Show Low from the Valley and we were hungry. We wanted something quick but good and on the way to our destination. But where would that be? So we stepped into Al and Diane's to help us fill our tummies.

I read the yelp reviews and these alleged phenomenal burgers. Based on the reviews, I expected an amazing burger and one that was equivalent to the best out there; preferably also one that had something to it that made it stand out. What I actually got was a decent burger, but nothing to really write home about. It was good, it was quick, it hit the spot and it was about one step above a BBQ burger off a backyard grill. The burgers aren't very large either, just average size. They also come a la carte, so if you want a side you'll have to order it.

The restaurant itself is pretty cool. I could tell that it's definitely a local hangout and a nice and clean one at that. They have a jukebox, good drink specials, plenty of seating in the dining room and bar, and nice wait staff.

In summary, this is a good spot to stop at if you're hungry and in the area, it's definitely tasty for a small town eatery but it's not a place I'd seek out as a destination unless I am passing through.

Stop the press, fantastic food in HEBER? Yes, it's true.

Red Onion would fit in so well in Tempe, somewhere near campus. Make no mistake, this is a sports bar in every way. Plenty of TV sets and a gigantic projector in the back dining room showing Nascar seemingly non stop. One might look around here and think total dive bar, but we're traveling so it's ok. If you judged it like that, you'd only partially be right.

The burgers at Red Onion are amongst the best I've ever had. They aren't organic grass fed hipster yuppie burgers. These are greasy full flavor burgers with all the toppings. My favorite is the Western Burger with cheddar, BBQ sauce, and onion rings. They make AMAZING buffalo wings and are a bunch of small town nice people who work there.

This place has become an absolute mainstay for me and I cannot make the drive to the white mountains without stopping here.

The Red Onion has a decent size lounge area with two pool tables, a long bar, and a few dining tables.  Children are not allowed in this area, so we headed up to the dining area.  The dining area is full of antlers and deer heads mounted on the wall, so if you're startled by this sort of stuff, you've been warned.  We sat in a booth next to a curtain.  I'd avoid this spot in the future because years of cigarette smoke still cling to it, and if you're sitting next to it, that will be all you can smell until your food comes.

We tried the green chili burger, the chicken sandwich, fried shrimp basket, and a green salad.  Maybe most surprising was the small green salad which was not small and chock-full of fresh veggies, including everything from broccoli to carrots.  They serve your burgers/sandwiches with a six-pack holder full of condiments which was nice.  The fries were good, and it was a fight until the last one.

I'd stop here again while passing through.

I really liked this place.  My hubby thought the burger could have been larger but I had the smaller version and it was fine for me.  I had the mushroom burger and it was great.  The waitress was really nice and joked around with us.  The place had a fun vibe to it.  Good place to go for a beer with friends or have a casual dinner.
I would definitely go back if in the area.
