Just had a lovely time at Alegria. So fun to taste great and very reasonably priced wines from Spain and Portugal...and California. Delicious tapas too. Very relaxing atmosphere but stylish without pretension. We're locals and for some reason hadn't made a stop here but now that we know we'll definitely be back...and we'll spread the word.
Review Source:What a delightful  wine tasting and nibble stop. The flights are well thought out and very tasty when matched with the wines. They are located just around the corner from the theatre, both the Palm and the San Luis Little Theatre, so it is a great stop before or after the show to sit and chat and be served. Gotta love this place! (and a nice selection to pick up a few bottles for home too)
Review Source:i'm in love with this place. The staff are increadibly nice, welcoming and educated on the wines. Its so fun when they bring out your flight and pour the wines. The wine is pretty good, light and crisp. All bottles are $25 or under which is a really good deal. The atmosphere of the winery is fantastic. Romantic yet chic-I love it. Its such a nice atmosphere to just stop in and enjoy a glass of wine with friends. Their appetizers are also delicious. I ordered the cheese and meat plate. There aren't a lot of places in SLO with this kind of atmosphere - definitely one of a kind.
Review Source:Words cannot express my love for this place. We stumbled upon Alegria looking for a glass of wine to end our day of shopping in SLO. What we found was an Oasis of delicious wine, delectable small bites and exceptional service. I was blown away by everything. The wine was super affordable, the small bites were exactly what we needed, and we pretty much had the place to ourselves. We ended up taking home a couple of bottles of really great spanish wine for something like $11 a bottle. Next time I am in SLO, Alegria will be on the itinerary!
Review Source:When you go somewhere especially when you're not familiar with the town you want #1, good location, #2 friendly service, #3 great atmosphere, #4 good product, #5 great value. Well that is exactly why I gave this 5 stars.
I'm writing this review for people who are not locals (like us) who are visiting. a block from downtown and where we parked. The woman that helped us was probably one of the nicest people, she gave us suggestions for dinner, grabbed us a paper to show us music scene for the night, chilled our bubbles for us to take home. So friendly! The atmosphere is great, you can sit by the window and actually forget that there is so much going on behind you. We had a girls day and this was the perfect end to the day/segway into the evening. We ordered a granache, chevre cheese and bean spreads...delish with all of them. Inspired me to make some of this stuff at home now. Seriously if i went to school here or lived nearby I would be here all the time, what a steal/deal! I dont htink there was anything over $25/bottle. I brought a $13 bottle home and my dad who is a big wine-o loved it!
Next time I'm in town i will definitely go here, everyone should check it out. So convenient to a leisurely afternoon without having to drive all over to wine tasting shops elsewhere.
Alegria was one of our stops on the Central Coast Food Tour and it was one of my favorites places to discover. Â Not only did we find an excellent Chardonnay (and I am not a Chardonnay fan) but we learned all about the fermentation of it in stainless steel as opposed to oak. Â Bought a bottle to bring home and I wish I'd bought a case!
The pourings are generous at Alegria; great opportunity to discover local wines and wines from Spain (all priced under $25). Â The flatbread was so good I was not the least bit embarrassed to ask to take the few pieces leftover home with me (it was towards the end of the food tour after all and I was so full but greedy enough at the deliciousness of this treat)!
Staff is very accomodating and attentive. Â They even surprised my son who was celebrating his birthday with an out-of-this world chocolate brownie treat with strawberries for our group and a balloon bouquet for him. Â I do think our tour guide was behind this thoughtful gesture and it sure was a nice touch on a lovely visit of this wine bar. Â Wish we lived closer to frequent Alegria more but will certainly return on our future visits to SLO.
From the moment we walked in, we knew we were in for a treat. Â Personal attention to deetail by the owners, great wines and good food. Â How can you go wrong? Â You can also buy a bottle there and they'll serve it with no corking fee. Â Felt like good friends just wanting you to have a nice evening.
Review Source:"So far as drinking is concerned, you have my hearty approval; for wine does of a truth moisten the soul and lull our grief's to sleep". Socrates
The proliferation of wine bars, wine shops, and wine focused business makes my heart sing. Â Each proprietor brings a unique view, inventory, and taste to those who worship Dionysus. Â My newest find in the wine bar portfolio is Alegria Wine and Ware in San Luis Obispo. Â Alegria means Joy in Spanish and elation is what I felt every minute in this new wine utopia. Â
The concept is small boutique style wines are offered from California, Spain and Portugal. Â All bottles under $25 and there is no corkage to drink it there. Â The wine is sold in flights, 3 ounce, 6 ounce pours or by the bottle. Â They also feature a "Just One Wine" selection that features a stand out for each winery. Â They offer exceptional tapas with a menu inspired by Russell Thomas of Two Cooks Catering. Â Owners John and David Hance come from varied and serial entrepreneurial backgrounds, to create this wine and tapas rapture.
The bright inspiring colors draw you in and make you feel like you just entered into a San Francisco hipster bar. Â The artwork is stirring and created by Hance's 80-year-old mother. Â The custom wooden crates that are fire stamped displaying the wine and the miraculous local artisan plates; towels and other kitchen adornments beckoned you to stay, imbibe, and experience joy.
The idea started with a Website dedicated to wine made from old vine wines (<a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.justonewine.com&s=cc86284d7722801c163515faf67a51515bb7a2160fa241a4853650e0e64966fe" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://www.justonewine.c…</a>) and turned into a place with distinctive discovery wines priced below $25, joyful gifts of artist created serving ware and a place to taste, meet and relax.  Alegria was set to open by Dec 1, 2011, but carful planning and brilliant business strategies made the curtain to rise by Nov 30, 2011.
I first found them when I was searching for a bottle of wine to smuggle into the Palm Theater.  I don't do soda, I do wine, and most the time carry a "wine purse" that has an opener, Riedel glasses, and a bottle of alcohol fermented from grapes.  This day I was caught without my bag, so I stumbled into Alegria.  I bought a Di Arie 2008 Barbera, from the Sierra Foothills that paired perfectly with a breathtaking foreign film.  We came back after and had tapas, starting with the sautéed mushroom bruschetta, that was earthly and wonderful.
Next, we had an amazing house made Flatbread. Â It was inspired and quite unique boasting such amazing ingredients like Allesina Finocchiona, fine cured specialty salami by Antonio Varia of Buona Tavola. Â This flatbread shined with fresh heirloom tomatoes, zucchini, and cheese. Â It had excellent dough and a symphony of fresh flavors.
Our next dish was Asian inspired slow cooked pork that was served on a square little wonton with ribbons of carrots and green onions. Â It was tasty enough to order another round. Â
David came out and shared with us his ideas and enthusiasm for this fantastic wine bistro. Â He is the cook and a fine one at that. Â His brother focuses on finding the wine surprises, while Jules is the genial hostess. Â Do yourself a favor and next time you catch a movie at the Palm, turn left down Chorro, grab a bottle of wine to enjoy with the the film and come discuss the movie after in this inspired place.
