We were looking for breakfast options near Index, and Der Baring Store came up as an option. Having been aware of this place over the years I did not expect much, but the current reviews looked promising. (We did notice their ad in the local paper, and evidently the owners/managers are relatively new.)
We came in around noon on a Sunday ad were pleasantly surprised that breakfast was still available. A small menu with largely classic American breakfast options. The cafe is a counter and a few tables near the front of the general store, with some additional seating outside. We found the staff to be remarkably friendly, as were the other customers - it was what I imagine as a "small town" feel.
The coffee is typical restaurant coffee (I didn't notice any espresso options, but the Espresso Chalet down the road can cover that) and the OJ was a prepackaged single serving bottle - not ideal, but I've had worse. The food, on the other hand, was great. Bacon, eggs, hash browns done just right. Pancakes had just a smidge of cinnamon, and were also excellent. Maple syrup was either real or a remarkable copy.
And, they have pies. Homemade pies. A number of options by the slice, and also some whole pies available. We decided to pick up a whole apple/cranberry/walnut pie. It must have weighed 5 pounds. We dug into it after we got home, and it was also excellent. Great crust, inspired filling. Evidently they sell hundreds of pies a month, and I can see why.
We went here for an early dinner really hoping to like the place...and maybe we caught them on a bad day.... the Store felt very cluttered and not very clean. The owner, Steve, was very friendly but that didn't make up for mediocre food and a very chaotic setting. We were the only customers at the time. Somebody's kids were constantly running in and out and several women seemed to be working and caring for the kids at the same time. The menu was limited and food was prepared on a residential stove -- 4 burners. My soda was served in a can retrieved from a cooler. If this is supposed to feel like "home," I would have run away a long time ago. My home is much calmer, and much cleaner.
Review Source:This place is great....northern exposure meets twin peaks....the store/post office/restaurant/ice cream parlor/video rental store....and supplies.....Steve is great.....all the people who work there are great.....feels like home......like you belong the moment you walk in.....and I have yet to have a meal that wasn't GREAT.....
Review Source:I love the Der Baring. Â It's a cozy little country store that makes me feel like I've just stepped back in time.
Always an interesting cast of characters to enjoy a meal with. Â The "2 fat boys" sandwich is so good, all fresh. Â I love the breakfast too. Â Mmmmm, so good, it's hard to decide what to eat, but I usually get the pancakes. Â There's something about those pancakes that I just love.
The store owner makes a mean breakfast. Â It's a general store with an ice cream parlor and a few tables for dine-in patrons. Â
If you're on Stevens Pass Highway looking for a breakfast plate that will fuel you up for a day's hike, they have you covered. Â My teenagers love the place! Â
Pancakes that dwarf their large plates and home fries to die for. Â Great grub. Â Want to try the Fat Boy All-Beef Sandwich next time. Â People rave about it. Â And the local people are a blast to talk to. Â Little Americana with your Fat boy Sandwich.
Forget about the bakery in Sultan, drive to this place for breakfast! The waffles are delicious and the buttermilk pancakes are just perfection on a breakfast plate. The prices are very reasonable, too,
After a day on the trails, satisfy your inner carnivore with a Fat Boy! This is what a Philly cheesesteak wants to be when it grows up. I've never tasted a sandwich quite like this or quite this good.
I stopped at this place on my way out east on a grand motorcycle adventure, and this was honestly as good as it gets.
Sitting at the table, eating a super yummy / warm bowl of chili sharing motorcycle stories with the owner.
Goat heads looked down on me from the shelves, antiques in the back, next to the post-office and who knows what else.
Food was yummy! I got to be the first to try their sticky buns, which were out of this world.
This place honestly made my whole trip! Loved it!
Cant wait to be in there again.
The sign on the bathroom wall had me cracking up, place is classic.
Don't Miss it! Seriously..
Come to Washington, and check this place out.
This past June while staying in a cabin along the beautiful Skykomish river in Baring, WA, my wife and I had the great pleasure of being customers at "The Almost World Famous Baring Store".
As a general store, you couldn't hope for more. All the hot new energy drinks, along side anything else you might need.
As a breakfast joint, I was nearly brought to tears by the real buttermilk pancakes. On this beautiful June Thursday morning, I believe it was the owner, Steve, who cooked for us, and he is truly proud of everything he makes, and it shows. As my fork easily carved bite sized squares of buttermilk infused fluffy pancakes, I could see the steam wafting out, bringing with it the scent of real maple syrup.
The home style potatoes were about as boring as Burning Man, with a great crispness to them and just the right amount of lemon pepper flavor to make us feel guilty for even thinking about putting ketchup on them.
If you're traveling through the area, stop in and have some pancakes. Just remember to bring your tissues!
We were on our way towards Leavenworth, WA to see the Christmas Tree Lighting and stopped at this cute little store on Highway 2. The name of the store is no longer "Der Baring Store", it is now called - The (Almost World Famous) Baring Store owned by Steve "Bear" Westover. In the front of the store, there was a sign that read, "Sheriff - Please park in the back, you're scaring off the customers." Too funny!
The store is the town's General Store which has EVERY basic necessities you need - groceries, post office and post box, antiques - which were mostly unique antique treasure consignments and gift shop - new local arts from the town's artist (hand made bird house and prints from originals) and souvenier mugs that has Baring, WA printed on the mugs and displayed in their case AND a "Deli", which I would call it -Cafe. Â
The deli has a full breakfast menu, sandwhiches, desserts (homemade secret recipe carrot cake) and several ice cream flavors. Â We ordered "The Almost World Famous Fat Boy" (this will soon to be FAMOUS - not 'Almost'!) sandwhich created by the owner and his friend - the Two Fat Boys - as the nice 'n friendly morning gal (Emily? I'm sorry I forgot your name!) told us about the Fat Boy creation. All beef, not pork, simmered in the owner's "secret au jus" homemade sauce made with pepperoncini and italian seasonings. Â The beef is then grilled and combined with onions, red and yellow peppers together with provolone cheese in a Gai's 6-in french roll. The Fat Boy was DELICIOUS! Â Nice and mild, not spicy, just right. The sandwich should be served with the soon to be FAMOUS Fat Boy au jus sauce on the side. I wanted more to dip in! Â
The Fat Boy came with either bag of chips or homemade potato salad. We ordered the potato salad. I had doubts when I first saw how deep yellow the potato salad looked.  My first initial thought was - too much mustard!  When I had my first bite, it was PERFECTLY blended  and DELICIOUS!!! I ate the potato salad first before I finished the sandwich!!! The potatoes were cooked perfectly firm, not mushy and the taste was not over powered with mustard! All blended with perfection!
On our trip back home, we talked about the potato salad and passed the store, to screech to a halt and turn back to get some more! Â We found out from another nice gal in the evening that told us the recipe is from the owner's mother and it's also the "secret recipe"! Â We had to order two bowls To Go for home (please sell them in PINTS!).
If you are on Highway 2, don't blink or you'll miss this place. This is a hidden secret soon to be OUT and I must tell ALL - IT'S A MUST GO, VISIT AND TRY! =)
