On the second Saturday of every month, this American Legion opens at 5 PM to sling most the most Story-Citian of foods: Kumla and Ham. Â While plum-sized potato dumplings cooked in ham broth doesn't really push my boundaries in the ethnic foods department, this Norwegian food is a large part of the persona of this little town. Â
And the crowds here indicate that. The legion will serve between 200-250 in the two hours they are serving. Word is around town that this is the best example of this dish you are going to find and for $7 bucks I'd encourage anyone to put it to the test. Â You'll get all-you-can-eat kumla dumplings and shredded ham, canned green beans, roll and apple sauce. Â It's the hearty meal that built this town in central Iowa. Â Well worth a visit to try this Scandinavian oddity.
As per my previous review, there's still a comfortable full-service bar in the basement of this place and it's open to the public. Â There's great help, and good people in here.
